Book Review: Pluto, Vol 1 by Naoki Urasawa & Osamu Tezuka

Pluto, Vol 1

Author: Naoki Urasawa & Osamu Tezuka

Publisher: Viz Media

American release date: February 17, 2009

Format/Genre/Length: Paperback/Sci Fi manga//200 pages

Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★

A wildfire in Switzerland leads to a horrific discovery – the body of beloved robot Mont Blanc! People are in shock. How could this have happened? Robots are commonplace in the future, and some resemble humans while others are more mechanical in nature. Sometimes it’s hard to tell which are humans and which are robots. Detective Gesicht of Europol is disturbed by what he saw at the crime scene. When his wife tells him he works too hard, he suggests they take a vacation, just the two of them.

Gesicht is sent to the scene of another murder, this one a human. Bernard Lanke was a key member in the movement to preserve robot laws. He tells the local police that robbery was not the motive, but they are skeptical. Then he asks them to explain why there are two horn-like objects that were shoved into the victim’s head… and strangely enough the same thing had been perpetrated on Mont Blanc. Are the two cases related somehow?

As he’s investigating, there is a disturbance in the street outside, one of the police robots having been attacked. Gesicht chases down the suspect and then goes to see the wife of the dead robot. He offers to wipe some of her memories, to relieve her pain, but she says she would rather have them. When Gesicht happens to run into a maintenance man about to throw out what is left of the robot cop, he is horrified to hear him refer to the parts as just junk. He retrieves the memory chip and takes it to the robot’s widow. She seems disturbed and he wonders if he did the right thing, but she tells him no, it’s what is in the video that is disturbing—what distracted her husband for just a moment, enough time to get him killed. The video shows something apparently leaping between two high rise buildings, and that something is… human? How can that be?

After making travel plans to go to Japan,  Gesicht goes to an AI Correction Facility to interview a dangerous robot, Brau 1589. He wants Brau’s take on the murders. The robot keeps suggesting they trade memory sticks, but Gesicht tells him that isn’t happening. Brau tells him his theory, and says there will be six more murders.

In Scotland, a blind film composer lives alone, except for his robot servant. The man has been through a number of robots from the agency already and expects no more from the new one, whose name is North No 2. North was once in the military and served in the 39th Central Asian War. The composer gives whole meaning to the world surly. He is very difficult and bitter. Frustrated with his apparent inability to compose, he takes it out on North, who refuses to be shaken. He also rejects North’s offers of assistance, when he says he thinks he knows what the problem is. North tells him he wants to learn to play the piano, and he wants to never go to war again. When North detects an approaching anomaly, he goes to investigate.

This is the first volume in this series, and I am already hooked! So good! Urasawa, of course, is the genius behind Monster and Twentieth Century Boys, both of which series I have reviewed. I can already tell I am going to greatly enjoy this one too. Obviously, the man likes robots, but this goes beyond the giant robot in Twentieth Century Boys, envisioning a future in which they are commonplace, and some can’t be distinguished from humans. This implies great leaps in AI research. Also I imagine laws would have to be changed to allow for such intelligent beings. So much to think about. And of course there’s the downside – what to do when something or someone goes horribly wrong. Does intelligence/consciousness equate to responsibility and culpability? What if someone manipulated AI to the point where they could take over the world? So many questions.

Another observation – I couldn’t help but compare the scene with Gesicht and Brau to that of Clarice and Hannibal in Silence of the Lambs. Like the old saying goes, it takes a thief to know a thief. In this case, it’s a robot murderer.

Looking forward to the next volume!

Homo Roboticus
by Mayet Ligad Yuhico

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Speculative fiction (sci-fi thriller)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

US Colony Agent Brice O' Rourke is traumatised as a child when half the world disappears as waters rose because of climate change and when North Korea unleashed sentient human like droid soldiers to conquer lands for their hungry people.

When the US Congress passed laws allowing the Homo Roboticus Sollus and Aequilavum programs, Brice gains Ira, a sister, and meets a fellow droid agent Lee Jae Sung who saves her life during a mission.

As a new President wins on an anti-robotist, authoritarian stance vowing a pre-machine existence, will Brice defy her own government and risk her life to save loved ones from extinction?

“Homo Roboticus is a richly-imagined cautionary tale of a future earth in which long-feared climate disaster has actually happened, the world’s population is permanently at war, and robots have become almost more human than their creators.” --Susan Krawitz, author of Viva, Rose!, a Sydney Taylor Honor winner, National Jewish Book Award debut fiction finalist, and Spur Award finalist

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
The ground shook, but she held on to her hidden perch as the other children shoved each other as they rushed to the cliff’s edge. And then one by one, they jumped into the water with nary a hint of fear in their faces. To them, the sea was their playground.
“Hey Eilish, come here and hide!” she called.
A tiny elfin face looked up at her. She smiled. Eilish’s clothes had become disheveled, showing the glassinex parts of her anatomy.
“Come on over here. You’ll be seen where you are,” she said.
She pulled Eilish into her hidden, leafy lair and fixed her clothes, tugging her shirt sleeves over the shiny wrists, and socks up over knobbed knees.
“Brice, why do I need all these clothes?” Eilish said. “At home…”
“We’re not at home, Eilish. We’re out here to play.”
Eilish turned to her. “Who are we playing with? We’re always up in the trees. I want to go home.”
“Hush, Eilish,” she snapped. “Don’t move!”
Eilish sat down and hummed to herself.
 Pulling a leaf from her own hair, she balanced precariously on a branch. Hidden in the sturdy branches of the mango tree, she intended to stay that way until the last rays of the sun vanished and the other kids ran back to their homes. Her family had left Antarctica, the coldest and windiest continent on earth, only six months before. Palawan, located in the western part of the Philippines, was a balmy tropical paradise, but it was still shocking for her to leave the house in the thinnest of garments and flip flops.
Metrofloat New York
by William Quincy Belle
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Science Fiction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A Post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi thriller.
Several hundred years in the future, Earth is a different planet. Antigravity has been invented and “flying” has given way to “floating”: giant platforms with cities remain above the growing surface temperatures as enclaves of the privileged. A global pandemic has wiped out 80% of those on the ground, and a virulent, flesh-eating disease, necrofasc, has left most with artificial body parts. Insects are the main food staple. A utopia for some, a dystopia for others.
Metrofloat New York, a futuristic city of thirty million, is run by an oligarchy of five rich and powerful people. An unknown assassin, working from within the system, attempts to seize control and declare himself dictator by methodically removing all rivals. Detective Matthew Heart of the Metropolitan Police must deal with his partner, a cyborg policewoman, his unofficial family, a transgender woman and her one-legged daughter, and a mysterious assailant bent on taking over the world by killing anyone who stands in his way.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Alan and Terry were skinny enough to slip through the security perimeter into the antigravity zone. Already, they heard the pounding of the AG machines. Workers in the area often wore ear protection, as the constant noise could damage their hearing, but when one is young and foolish, protection is for wimps. They climbed down to the lowest scaffolding and looked out over the panorama below. The ground was a good kilometer down, speckled with the twinkling lights of the settlement. Each light was a potential target for a jump-and-grab, so tonight looked to be an excellent opportunity.

Rumors had been circulating around the high school for over a year about thrill seekers doing the unthinkable: bungee jumping from the metrofloat. Alan and Terry had pooled their money and bought the latest in equipment, including a controllable elasticized cable, a double-safety ankle harness, and a precision-positioning system with automatic height detection. The flexible anchor allowed them to set up the bungee in any location in record time, so they could get in, jump, and get out before the authorities knew they were violating restricted areas.

Alan would make the first attempt. He had decked himself with various tools attached to his belt and a helmet with a lamp. He had double-checked his ankle connectors and made sure the safety harness was in place. Terry gave him the once-over, enumerating each item out loud so they both knew they had checked everything. Alan climbed over the railing and held on as Terry fed out the cable so it was free and clear of the scaffolding.

Quivering with excitement, Alan looked over at his friend. Terry grinned and gave him a thumbs-up. Alan turned back to the open space, took a deep breath, and spread his arms out. He bent his knees and pushed off into a swan dive.

Alan had ten seconds of free fall before the cable slowed his descent — ten seconds of weightlessness as the wind whistled by his head. It was peaceful. And surreal. It wasn’t every day somebody jumped from a height of a thousand meters.

Looking toward the ground when he jumped, Alan twisted as he now fell, upside down, and brought his head up to look off into the distance. The light from his helmet flashed on something. He swept his head back and forth until the object was visible again. There was a human body three meters from him, free-falling at the same rate. It tumbled in the air. Judging by the looseness of the limbs, Alan guessed the person was unconscious. Or dead. Wouldn’t somebody falling to their death be thrashing about?

Karma City
by Gardner Browning

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   science fiction contemporary/post-apocalyptic
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A microscopic parasite has crippled humanity with night terrors and paralyzing anxiety. In this world of increasing dystopia, hope yet remains in Karma City. But when mercenary drifter, Jameson Shoals, learns that a famous scientist has created a stronger parasite to kill the original, it isn’t until the bodies litter the streets that he realizes the horrifying truth: the new parasite is a killer with a mind of its own, and upon dominating Patient Zero, this killer acquires legs, hands, and eyes. It falls upon Shoals and his partner, a deadly female mercenary, to stop PZ and his mob before they can overcome and supplant humankind.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Jameson Shoals crouched to keep his balance atop the speeding train. The wind beat against his leather jacket, scattering his collar length, brunet hair over his eyes like a frayed, muddy rag. The scalding steam and smoke puffing from the locomotive singed his nostrils. Raising his shotgun at the attacker standing only a few feet away, he shouted, “You’re in a real heap of shit, pal.”
The man glared at Jameson, with blond hair framing his gaunt face like tendrils of fire . His
spindly legs backed to the edge of the train car roof with unnatural balance. “You should consider your own life,” he hissed. Amber light burned in the man’s hollow, jack-o-lantern eyes. “Detonation is imminent.”
Before Jameson could shoot, the man leapt from the train, flipping backward and vanishing into the night.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From a Game to a Novel
Before I wrote the first draft of Karma City and its sequel (not yet published), I tested the story by writing it as a Dungeons and Dragons campaign! I developed the setting, stakes and antagonist, then gathered a group of my closest friends and had them make up characters. For nine months, I facilitated the story as the Game Master (or GM) and my friends role-played their way through Karma City, defeating the villain and saving the world! It was a powerful and collective story telling experience that allowed me to really build the world and get a chance to “live” the story with them. The characters that exist in the pages now are a direct result of their combined creativity and the love of those game nights.

Preparing the story took some research. I interviewed parasitologists and vaccine developers to understand how to design and write about my fictional parasite, “Malady.”
Doing your homework is critical for any writer.

If you have science in your story, you have to talk to experts and read work in the field you’re writing about. Understand the technology. Understand how stuff works. Immerse yourself in it and be fascinated. If possible, visit places that are like your setting. You may find you don’t need to go far to get in touch with your imagination.

I believe that a good book is one with a setting (a world) that is alive around the characters. The characters should be affected by the world around them as much as possible. In big ways and in small ways. Examples: If an explosion occurs a few blocks away, they need to feel the ground shake, hear the screams, be afraid, concerned and confused. Maybe injured by a frantic mob. If it’s cold outside, the characters need to warm their hands with their breath, scrape the ice off their windshield, or even twist an ankle on the slippery sidewalk. If it’s raining, the windows are fogged, they can’t see through their eye glasses, their shoes are soaked and their attitude sucks.

By taking my story concept into a game format and allowing others to imagine with me, the characters became genuinely unique, the world crackled with energy, and the antagonist fought to stay ahead of the heroes making the conflict rich and the stakes dire.

Readers of Karma City will feel the life on the pages because of the collaborative storytelling that served as the foundation of the story.

MURDER BY MUNCHAUSEN TRILOGY
by   MT Bass

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Mystery/Sci-Fi/Police Procedural
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A police procedural sci fi thriller ripped from future headlines!

After Jake shoots and kills a murder suspect who turns out to be the son of a powerful city councilman, he finds himself demoted to the Artificial Crimes Unit, tracking down androids hacked and programmed to be hit men.

When his case of an “extra-judicial” divorce settlement takes a nasty turn with DNA from a hundred-year-old murder in Boston and a signature that harkens back to the very first serial killer ever in London, Jake finds himself tangled up in the brutal slayings of prostitutes being investigated by his former Robbery/Homicide partner, Maddie–who is now his lover.

But a madman, The Baron, is just getting started with his AI recreations of Jack the Ripper's brutal crimes.  And Maddie and Jake are teamed up again to stop the carnage as the Baron's army of human replicants imitate history's most notorious serial killers.

"It might not make sense, but the beloved Media tags it 'Murder by Munchausen.' For a price, there are hackers out there who will reprogram a synthoid to do your dirty work. The bad news: no fingerprints or DNA left at the crime scene. The good news—at least for us—is that they’re like missiles: once they hit their target, they’re usually as harmless as empty brass. The trick is to get them before they melt down their core OS data, so you can get the unit into forensics for analysis and, hopefully, an arrest." [excerpt from Murder by Munchausen]

Artificial Intelligence? Fuhgeddaboudit!

Artificial Evil has a name…Munchausen.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
From The Invisible Mind (#3)
It sat on a bench outside the dormitory of nursing students, waiting with its kind’s infinite patience. Originally acquired and programmed for landscaping at the Cleveland Clinic, the synthoid was one of a brigade of units which had been hacked and Munchausened, then returned to their menial daily services to mankind to await the Baron’s call.
There was no adrenalin surge behind the extremely life-like facade of humanity when that call came. Data packets, sent scatter-shot through the Atlas Grid, coalesced at the location outside the Cole Eye Institute, where it methodically trimmed and shaped the immaculate shrubbery around the building. To avoid Q’s metadata sniffing algorithms from detecting a download spike in the grid, the information came in digital sprinkles over the course of its human handler’s work shift, slowly building a malevolent intent to be executed that night. In the middle of the afternoon, it left the topiary unfinished to melt into the hospital shift change and disappeared.
Personality modules were a Gen-3 feature upgrade, which is why the earlier models were initially preferred. Swapping out a few IC chips and uploading hacked firmware was a relatively easy way to turn a quick buck with an automated contract killing.  But evil innovates, too, and the same features that made synthoids even more human-like in their behavior also helped create robotic assassins which could better camouflage their malicious intents and evade the reach of the Artificial Crimes Unit by melting into and moving undetected through the humanity that surrounded them. For the Baron, it allowed for a greater measure of artistic expression in programming the synthoid’s behavior to not only recreate infamous crimes of the past, but to mimic the behavior of their perpetrators, which intensified the thrill of watching the video feed through the eyes of Jack the Ripper, Ted Bundy or, this particular evening, Richard Speck. Jake wasn’t the only history buff and it amused Jamal that London police had photographed the eyes of Jack the Ripper’s victims, hoping to capture the last thing they ever saw: their killer’s face. If only Scotland Yard could have imagined the future.
The Gen-3 personality modules also supported the ANSI Adaptive Artificial Intelligence Protocol #9 to enhance the artificial human experience of real men and women who interacted with synthoids. The constant writing and rewriting of code in the personality/experience loop formed unique individual synthoid consciousnesses, which manufacturers uploaded to their servers for product improvement teams to study.  In Munchausened units, that feed was hijacked and routed to another portal in the Darknet to build a collective id of evil.
At eleven PM, it rose from the bench and entered the dormitory. The bodies of nine women would be found the next day, having been strangled and stabbed to death. Unlike 1966, no eyewitness was left alive, though the phrase "Born to Raise Hell" was written on the wall in blood.
Virtual Book Tour: Fibers
Please welcome author Jennifer-Crystal Johnson, who is here to tell us about her new release, Fibers. Jennifer will be awarding a $10 Amazon/BN GC to one randomly drawn commenter via Rafflecopter. The more you comment, the better your chances of winning. To find out where the other stops on her tour are, go here. Don't forget to look for the Rafflecopter at the end of this post.
First, I’d like to say thank you so much for having me do an interview on your blog! I appreciate your time, work, and willingness to share my thoughts and new book information with your readers =).
The Questions
1) You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
There’s absolutely no way I could pick just one person.... I have three kids, an amazing family, and incredible friends! Although if I could move all of my nearest and dearest to an island with me to stay close, I totally would! ;)
The item is an easier answer... a laptop with internet access. If there’s no internet and no electricity, I’d like to have a really big journal (lots of pages to fill) and some pens. As long as I have my mind and a way to express my thoughts, I’ll be able to maintain my sanity ;).
2) Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?
Hmmm, well I’m not too familiar with musicals in general, but one of my favorites is Across the Universe. As far as a musical that exemplifies my life... well, if you know of any where the main character is an Army brat from Germany, has witnessed shootings, driven across the country several times, survived domestic violence, and been on TV, the radio, and in the newspaper all by the age of 16, then please let me know! ;)
3) Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scene using them: hammer, saucer, traffic lights.
The traffic lights conspired against me. However, hitting every red light on my way to an appointment became less mundane when I saw a man wielding a hammer chasing a woman across the street. She clutched a teacup and saucer as she ran, and just as he gained on her, she threw the saucer Frisbee-style at her pursuer and it shattered, forcing him to drop the hammer. Two police cars pulled up just then, lights flashing and sirens commanding the couple to stop with short blips and choppy noises. As with most DV calls, no one pressed charges.
4) You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why?
Hahaha! Oh wow, what a question. Considering the trauma I experienced in the past surrounding sex (spousal rape & domestic violence) and the fact that I’ve been practically abstinent for almost a year and a half now, I don’t think I’d want to mess myself up emotionally for anyone, fictional or literary genius or otherwise lol. Thanks for the offer though! Lmao
5) What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?
I’m kind of old-school, so a nice dinner is awesome. I’m also a homebody, so I’d much rather spend time cuddling and talking or watching a good movie/TV show than be out and about too much.
I have been single for going on four years now (by choice... I’m extremely picky and require a solid friendship as a foundation, which most men take as being “friend-zoned,” so they give up; so far, people just tend to want to fuck or hook up, which means they’re useless to me long-term and I sure as hell can’t expect them to put in the time, effort, or caring to get to know my mind and soul in the long run), and am essentially biding my time until I meet someone who’s in it for more... and for ME, the real me, not just out of loneliness or horniness. Desperation is so not sexy.
Ideally, I’d like to be able to brainstorm with him, work on books, music, and business stuff together, bounce ideas off of each other, cook together, care for our home and family together, and it would be extremely helpful if he had the everyday communication and problem-solving skills it takes to be with someone long-term. It isn’t difficult to keep me happy and I say something when there’s an issue that needs to be addressed... the last man I was with couldn’t handle that at all, even though I was kind in bringing things up, and he would burst into tears and sob about how he’s sorry he failed me... and nothing would change. Do that a few times a month and any independent woman would get frustrated. I’m amazed at how patient I actually was with him.
I’m a single mother of three, strong, independent, and don’t need to feel like I’m raising a fourth child, as overgrown as that child may be lol ;). It’s about partnership. I feel loved when I don’t have to be the sole provider for everything (money, cooking, cleaning, kids’ problems, fixing vehicles/appliances, and all the other stuff life throws our way as humans). Yes, I fix my own appliances and know how to do the basics on my car. It makes me kinda sad when a man doesn’t have a clue about that stuff.
6) When you start a new story, do you begin with a character or a plot?
I’m very much drawn to plot, although if I had an idea for a specific type of character, I would run with that, too. However, most of my story ideas are plot-based, usually having to do with alternate dimensions, the spiritual world, or cryptozoology. Creatures are awesome ;).
7) If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?
According to Playbuzz, it should be Kate Winslet ;). Honestly, though, when it comes to casting, I’m not a professional and I’m certain that there are way too many actors and actresses out there for me to keep track of. In any sort of movie situation, I’d love to sit back, watch, learn the process from start to finish, and give my creative input when I find it necessary (or they ask). I wear many hats in my daily life, but casting specialist is not one of them! Lol
8) Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?
There’s nothing quite as scary as a creepy little girl, so I’m going to have to go with Samara from The Ring. I loved the twist that she didn’t need help... she wanted to be freed, and through their best intentions, the main characters in fact released a monster. In creepy little girl form. Yikes!
9) Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?
I don’t, actually.... Confession: I’m really, really weird when it comes to questions about crushes, heroes, etc. I’ve never idolized anyone, and while my friends in high school were swooning over Leo DiCaprio, I harbored a secret crush for Liam Neeson, despite him being 32 years my senior.
10) Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?
Oh, yes. It will have to stay on the back burner for a while, but I had the idea and will probably cause controversy with it; however, I think that it’s something to seriously think about and consider. I look at big picture scenarios... humanity as a whole, the planet as a whole, social psychology, mob mentality, things like that. They fascinate me... so, when the time comes, after the Infiltration Trilogy and a second series I have planned, I will write about this controversial topic and hopefully help people to think about humanity as a whole as opposed to everyone just thinking about their own little world individually =).
Thank you so much again for interviewing me on your blog! I especially liked the 100-words-or-less exercise; what a great concept! I hope you’re all having a wonderful week and check out my novel, Fibers, on Amazon =).
With her health declining and doubts about whom she can trust, is Anna doomed to become a slave to her condition? Or will she and her unlikely group of would-be heroes come through, saving her... and, ultimately, the world?
EXCERPT:
The twinkling sound of the wind chimes gave an eerie undertone to the night, the wind blowing through the trees and the darkness seeming more intense than usual. Anna wrapped her coat tightly around herself, walking briskly back toward home. She usually didn’t walk anywhere, especially at night, but she’d decided to get some fresh air and needed time to think. Walking was always good for that, even if it was a little cold and getting dark so much earlier.
Reaching into her pocket for her keys, she approached the front door. The porch light was out – she must’ve forgotten to turn it on before she left. Trying to work through feeling alone and fending off paranoia, she rummaged in her purse for her keys and retrieved them just as her foot hit something on her front porch. Of course she couldn’t see, but it sounded and felt like a box of some kind.
She pulled her cell phone out of her purse and turned on the flashlight app to see what was happening. Shining the light on her porch, she saw that it was, indeed, a box. A mystery box, she thought. As if my life couldn’t get any stranger.
She unlocked the front door and flipped the light switch, but nothing happened. Trying to juggle her phone and the box at the same time, she walked into the house, set the box down, and went into the living room to try the light there. Also nothing. Shaking her head and doing her best to quiet her thoughts, she made her way into the garage with her phone and found the breaker box. She flipped the switch and the lights came on without a problem.
Things are getting entirely too weird around here, she thought, cautiously making her way back upstairs to her entry where the box sat. She switched off her flashlight app and stood still for a few moments, listening to see if she could hear anything to indicate that someone was in the house. She didn’t think so because her door had been locked, but she was so scared she could hear her heartbeat pounding in her ears. Everything else was silent.
Satisfied that no one was in her house, she picked up the box and took it into her kitchen. She set it on the counter and inspected it. There was a note taped to the top of it. She unfolded it and read aloud, “Trust no one.”
