Lee reached up and felt the top of the door frame. “No key. I guess Ames forgot to leave it.”

 

“He has his own key. He just said Olivia keeps it up there.” Katherine bent down to flip back the welcome mat. Still no key. She sighed. “Should we see if the manager has a spare?”

 

“The manager isn’t on site.” Lee slouched against the wall. “If only we knew someone who could pick a lock.”

 

Katherine rolled her eyes, but smiled in spite of herself. “Breaking and entering could lose me my license.” Lee and Jake liked to tease her about some of her skills, although they always stopped short of mentioning the Espionage Services Agency.

 

“Sure, sure. But we do have permission to enter. And we’d have to drive to Wilmington to get another key from Mr. Ames..." Lee let his voice trail off and studied his fingernails.

 

Katherine chuckled and pulled out her pocket knife. “You know I don’t carry picks anymore.” She opened the knife and carefully slid the high carbon stainless steel blade between the door and the striker plate. Finding the latch, she pushed it out of the door jam and opened the door.

 

“Don't tell Sammi.”

 

“Never.” A huge grin spread over Lee’s face.

Q&A with Author Amethyst Drake

 

Q: Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?

A: Ooo! I love this question. I love musicals! I think I would choose the classic Irving Berlin movie musical White Christmas. And I would be the general who becomes an innkeeper. General Tom Waverly is not the main character of the musical, but he is essential to the story because the main characters are focused on cheering him up and helping him. Gen. Waverly has a perfectly fine life, but sometimes he feels unappreciated and lonely. He longs to have an impact on the world, but challenges block him from doing so. In his darkest hour, his friends and family rally around him to remind him of his true value and show their appreciation and love for him. I have had many times in my life when I have felt alone or discouraged. But my friends and family always build me up and encourage me not to give up. (It also happens to be my favorite musical.)

Q: Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scene using them: hammer, saucer, traffic lights

A: Josh set a saucer of treats on the porch for his cat. He grabbed his hammer to make some repairs to the loose porch railing. He was proud of his historical craftsman. He stroked his cat as she licked the bottom of the saucer.

Suddenly, a car horn blared. Josh looked out toward the traffic lights. The traffic light was out! Josh scooped up his cat and took her inside. His hammer and repairs would have to wait.

Q: When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?

A: I usually start with the plot, deciding what is going to happen in the story. But my thoughts quickly shift to how these events are going to affect my characters. Since I’m writing a series, my main characters are already established. So I don’t have to worry too much about developing them from scratch, just how the plot is going to play into their character arc.

Q: What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?

A: My favorite date with my husband is going to Derby Dinner Playhouse in southern Indiana. We enjoy talking and eating dinner before the show, and the show is always fantastic. Any kind of live entertainment is fun. We enjoy interacting during the performance and talking about it during intermissions. Derby Dinner has a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere and it is on the top of my list of romantic dates.

Q: Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?

A: I can’t say I’ve really had a crush on a historical figure, but then I’ve never really thought about it before! I would probably choose a writer or poet. Someone who conveys deep emotion and meaning though their words like Shakespeare, Lord Byron, or Robert Frost. On the other hand, I am deeply moved by the art of Claude Monet, Rembrandt, and Da Vinci. So maybe I would choose an artist as my historical crush.

He was thinking that the man’s accent could be Irish. But more Cockney, almost. Odd. He saw the man thrust his hand forward.

 

“Name’s Roy.” He shook Roy’s hand, earnestly.

 

“Name’s Dixon. Pleasure to meet you.” He glanced over at Roy’s suit. “Nice couture! A refreshing play on seersucker! ‘Maison Dixon’ is mine. Curious to hear about yours!”

 

Roy felt a bit confused. He had already introduced himself. He figured maybe those white things were hearing aids. And he had a crazy name. “Ya said yours is Mason Dixon?”

 

“Yes!”

 

“Like your Mason-Dixon line?”

 

“Well, thank you, Roy! Which particular line do you favor?”

 

Roy felt confused again. “Favor? Well, I was thinkin’ of the long one? The old one?”

 

Bertram nodded, knowingly. Nice to know the “Smart Man” line was still revered. Teddy had been encouraging him to drop it. “Yes, Smart Man, a long and successful line.”

 

Roy nodded. “Why, thanks, Mr. Dixon. But I would reckon everbody ’roun here’s heard of it. Don’t take too much brains. Historical, like.”

 

“Brilliant! Thanks, Roy. That’s my job. To keep those lines out in the public’s mind.”

 

Roy scratched at his rusty beard stubble. “So, like, ya do surveys, still? Ta mark the lines?”

 

“Well, certainly. But those are a little old school. We don’t always attach a survey to each line we produce. We get things done more with social media. Influencers, mainly. Good judges of the zeitgeist.”

 

Roy was thinking that surveyors setting lines without surveys didn’t sound very safe. And he wasn’t sure about the rest. “Ya done anything here in Bawlmer? Any new ones?” Roy had been shopping at that new supermarket in Middle River. He wanted to make sure the building was safe. He was hoping Mr. Dixon’s company was not involved.

J. Paul (J.P.) Rieger is a born and bred Baltimorean and mostly retired Maryland attorney. As such, he’s well acquainted with the quirkiness and charm of Baltimore’s unique citizens. INTERVIEW 10

What would we find in your beard? Most certainly, flecks of breakfast cereal. The ones that drop off of the spoon. You look around your shirt and the floor and never find where they’ve gone. Perhaps some dust woolies, too. I comb through my beard on a semiannual basis, though, for hygiene purposes.

What was the happiest moment of your life? My wedding day! We still talk about it, fifteen years later. Finally, I had found my soulmate! The line dancing and crab balls were good too.

Do you listen to music while writing? If so what? I never listen to music while writing. The reason is that I love music and when it is playing, I instinctively place full attention on the music, good or bad. For a lot of people, music playing in the background is pleasant aural wallpaper. For me it is an attention-grabbing distraction.

What is something you'd like to accomplish in your writing career next year? I simply want to keep writing. I’m working on my fifth novel, unnamed as yet, which features Police Detective Kev Dixit. Dixit also appears in Clonk! and in my most recent, not yet published novel, Sunscreen Shower.

How long did it take you to write this book? I wrote The Big Comb Over mostly during 2022, my first year of semi-retirement. It took about ten months.

Melanie wanders into the dining room and finds her parents already seated at the table with their personal slaves standing behind them. Her mother, Dorothy, takes a sip of orange juice and replaces the glass on the lace tablecloth. Her servant, Natty, immediately gets a pitcher from the sideboard and refills the glass. Meanwhile, James is smiling at Melanie. “Morning, Miss,” he says. The white-haired Black man pulls out her chair. Once she’s seated, he spreads a cloth napkin over her lap.

 

“What was all the ruckus at Jaybird’s last night?” Dan Montgomery asks. He’s the mayor of Huntsville and knows everything.

 

“A German boy started it,” Melanie says defensively.

 

“Yes, and his father already called me to complain. He’s a big wheel at The Space Flight Complex.”

 

“Sorry!”

 

Montgomery points to the syrup. His slave, Parker, reaches for it and then pours. “Enough,” Montgomery snaps. He turns back to Melanie. “You and all the others will have a week of detention.”

 

Melanie gasps. “What about cheerleading practice?”

 

“You should have thought of that before you went to the drive-in. That’s where all the delinquents hang out and you with them.”

 

“I won’t go anymore. Please.” Melanie bats her baby blues at her father. His expression melts. “Go to detention after school today, and maybe we’ll see about tomorrow.”

 

“Thanks, Dad.”

 

Montgomery cuts off a bite of pancake and pops it into his mouth. That reminds Melanie to eat as well. It’s almost time for the bus.

Q. You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?

A. If I was marooned on a desert island my choice for the one person to be with would be my wife, Bettina. She is a very resourceful, competent person who would help make the most of the situation. The one item I would want to be sure of having is my fishing rod. That would enable me to either catch fish or at least look like I was doing something constructive while actually goofing off!

Q. Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?

A. I think the musical “South Pacific” would best exemplify my life. It’s about the interactions between US military personnel and the local population of the Pacific Island where they are based. The musical came out in the late 40’s about the time I was born into a military family. My first memories are of living in an exotic foreign country. “South Pacific” was controversial when it came out because of its forthright treatment of racial prejudice. I lived on army bases and attended integrated army schools in Europe at a time when strict racial segregation was the norm in the American South. Many students my age went on to protest in favor of civil rights. The “South Pacific” character I would most identify with is Luther Billis. In the musical Billis provides most of the comic relief. In high school I was always the class clown and like Billis evinced little respect for authority.

A. With a sigh, Jake lets in the clutch and downshifts. Should have taken the bypass, he thinks as he comes to a stop, how can a town this size have so many traffic lights? The signal changes and Jake gets the motorcycle back into gear. He passes a brick building and with a glance ascertains that it’s the town library. Further down a neon sign hanging in the window of a modest building promises liquid refreshment. Might as well hammer a couple of beers, Jake decides and downshifts again.

Inside the dimly lit establishment three grizzled heads seated at the far end of the bar swing in unison to gaze at Jake as he enters. Disappointment at not seeing another regular is written on their faces. Sullenly the old timers turn back to concentrate on their drinks. A woman holding a whiskey bottle pushes through a pair of swinging café doors and Jake gets a glimpse at the tidy kitchen behind her. Setting the bottle on the bar the woman dries her hands with her apron. “What’ll you have?” she asks Jake.

You! Jake thinks, staring into her sparkling green eyes. He bites his tongue to keep from blurting out that thought. “What’s on draft?” he manages to get out.

“All we got is PBR.”

“That’ll do.” Dave lays a five-dollar bill on the counter to prove he’s not a deadbeat. The woman reaches for a mug in an overhead rack accentuating her slim figure. She turns to the beer tap.

Jake is smitten. Red hair and green eyes! What’s she doing in a place like this? He watches her carefully top off the mug with just the right amount of head. “What’s the cat’s name?” he asks pointing to the tabby licking a saucer of milk in the corner.

Q. What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?

A. My wife and I both enjoy quiet evenings at home with our assortment of rescued dogs and cats. We love to curl up in bed surrounded by our furry friends who are happy to watch whatever is on PBS with us. Our evening probably wouldn’t impress outsiders as overly romantic, but we’re happy!

Q. When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?

A. I almost always start with a character or in the case of my new novel characters. I had an idea for the theme I wanted to develop with Crossing Day in mind for a several years, but was unable to find the right approach to take until one day, it hit me to put a group of high school students in a story that would bring out the topic. Once I began writing about these characters, they helped me develop the plot.

Q. If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?

A. Without a doubt I would want Adam Sandler to play me if they were to make a movie about my life. He is a great actor who in several movies has shown that he can convey the sort of give-a-damn attitude I had growing up!

As Harmony, she wants to uncover the reason why her lives keep ending so soon. As Veronica, she wonders how much longer she has to live like this? What could possibly be left for her? Little did she know, she was about to get her answers...

The next few lives on Earth were more of the same thing. Kaleb and I would concentrate on finding each other before we would leave here. Then, after some years would pass on Earth, we would. Not once did we miss. Every first greeting was basically the same. The second we would get close enough to each other down there, that’s when the acrobatics would start. We would slam right into each other, bump our heads together, tripping and flipping over one another every single time. Always somehow causing one of us—mainly me—if not both of us, to die.

 

No matter how far apart they placed us on Earth, Kaleb and I would find each other. It was my guess that using my theory made us like magnets—accident magnets, as Gwen so kindly put it. We were hurdling toward each other like comets at light speed, coming at each other so fast that we were literally crashing into each other. We gave a new meaning to the phrase “bumping into each other” because we actually were.

 

It’s a unique feeling, being on this end of this odd little situation. I had been shoved out a second-story window, and then was lucky enough to snap my neck and be trampled by a horse I had spooked once when I hit the ground. In the next life, I was rolled onto a very highly active beehive and then stung to death (no, I am not kidding). Then, imagine the surprise I felt in the life after that one, when a certain someone was running with a wallet he had stolen, and then shoved us both off a train platform into the path of an oncoming train. I still don’t know if that person ever got their wallet back.

 

I am sure all of this must seem rather disturbing from where you are sitting. I know I would certainly feel that way if I were reading this from where you are. It’s quite an interesting perspective for me, being here, right now, knowing all that I do, versus being on Earth and having the limited knowledge that we were allowed. It really turns things around and sheds a different light on it—don’t you think?

 

With the knowledge of home blocked from our memory, life and death can seem so absolute from the human perspective. Death seems final, bringing with it fear of the unknown, and such anguish to the ones that are left behind.

 

You know what they say: hindsight is always 20/20. Imagine what Earth would be like if this knowledge weren’t blocked from our memory. It would certainly change the way we view our lives while we are there. Naturally, if some were armed with this knowledge, they would be much more adventurous, never taking their life seriously enough to truly learn anything. Life on Earth would take on less meaning. Then again, perhaps knowing our lives do go on would help some to live their life with less fear and appreciate their time there. Maybe they would strive to be better because they know. Isn’t having a little knowledge better than no knowledge at all? Something is better than nothing, isn’t it? To be able to utilize this knowledge might help propel us forward and help us gain a sense of purpose. If only there were a way to leak some of this knowledge somehow…

Billie Kowalewski grew up in a small town along the Connecticut shoreline. She’s always had a wild imagination and spent her childhood dreaming up stories. This would often lead her to the library or whatever bookstore where she would be combing the shelves for books that closely resembled what was in her head at the time. A lot of the time she would come close and would be satisfied with what she found. However, there was always this one story she could never find. It was in 2010 that she decided to write it herself. In whatever spare time she has left, she enjoys listening to pretty much anything that rocks, like 80's hair bands, metal, etc. She also has a gift for finding the strangest movies and shows ever (according to her children) and loves spending time with her family.

If you could have one paranormal ability, what would it be?

It’s a toss up between being able to read minds or to see into the future. Either one would be intriguing.

What is one thing your readers would be most surprised to learn about you?

That I am quite handy. I love fixing things at home and then whatever it is working well afterwards. It’s a great feeling.

When writing descriptions of your hero/ine, what feature do you start with?

Whatever first comes to mind. Usually, it tends to be hair and eyes. I think color is the easiest thing to see in my imagination.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Pantser! I have no plan ever! This often goes for life as well.

Did you learn anything  from writing this book? If so, what?

I learned that I am quite good at that job. Let’s see how well I do marketing it. that is the hardest part.

The next morning, I awoke in my hotel bed in a black mood, this time stirred up by the vestiges of the same goddamn nightmare. It was the feeling of being sucked backward through churning water. That’s what it felt like in the black dream, the one that imprisoned me, night after night. The Stygian darkness of my backward traveling struck with a petrifying chill. A malfunction of my body’s thermoreceptor system. I imagined death would feel just like that. The only way I could describe it. But no white lights. The blackness wasn’t like ordinary dark. It was the infinite purple blackness of a night completely devoid of stars, a moonless sky. So inky that you were sure you could see floating blotches of tarred nothingness, just like when you closed your eyes.

 

I don’t think Clyde really ever got it, that the sensation of drowning wasn’t just a feeling—in the sense of something imagined, a phantasm, an amygdala hijack. It was the actual feeling of a lived experience, something embodied at a deep level, emotionally rancid, cancerous, growing for twenty years; the feeling of being sucked backward through water in silent blackness. I always had this, these feelings. Intuitive, sensory, primordial. That’s what I did. I knew that’s what made me exceptional.

1) You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?

I would be marooned with my wife and my PlayStation 5 attached to solar-powered generator.

2) Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?

The Lion King would be the stage musical, and my character would Simba.

3) What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?

An evening candlelit dinner on a terrace overlooking St. George’s Square, in Valetta, the capital of Malta, being entertained by a troupe of jugglers throwing fire torches, while enjoying the warm Mediterranean breeze.

4) When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?

Plot and character are symbiotic: a detective story requires a detective, and a cybercrime thriller, in the case of The Dark Court requires a perpetrator of the crime, and a cybercrime investigator. And while the plot invites the character, as the character develops and is developed, they tend to then take on and drive the story, as their character emerges.

5) Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?

Freddy Krueger. He is the ultimate horror villain, as he can’t be evaded or stopped as he attacks victims in their dreams. And he has a devastating sense of humor, albeit of the macabre kind
