Virtual Book Tour: Apple Bites Anthology

I am pleased and proud to announce the culmination of a joint project I understood with my friend and fellow author, Denise L. Wyant - the Apple Bites anthology. Hopefully this will be just the first of more to come! Denise had the idea to have authors submit short pieces, no more than 3k in length, around a common theme. The theme for this anthology is Back to School, with the added proviso that each story must feature an apple in some way! I was fortunate to have been able to edit these stories, along with Denise. I hope you will enjoy them!

My story in the anthology is called Rivals. Here is the blurb:

It’s the start of a new school year at upscale Westover College, nestled in entitled seclusion in the mountains of western Pennsylvania, and the fraternities are competing with one another to swell their ranks. John Stewart McMillan III is the popular and devilishly handsome president of Alpha Lamda Chi. The host with the most, he’s confident his house will lure the highest number of new recruits.

To his dismay, a rival fraternity’s president is bent on crashing the Alpha Lamda soiree. Sexy blond Bryce Lorenzo Hart is always up for a challenge. And besting John is the best challenge he can think of. Their rivalry is legendary, both in and out of class.

When Bryce pushes John’s buttons, the challenge is on—and winner takes all.

And now for a little excerpt:

The open house was in full swing. Raunchy jokes and raucous laughter resounded through the frat house. Tonight all six of the fraternities at Westover College had thrown open their doors, hoping to induce as many new fish—aka freshmen—as possible to pledge. Of these six, Alpha Lambda Chi was one of the two most prestigious, as well as being wildly popular among the student body. That was due, in no small measure, to its charismatic president.

John Stewart McMillan III glanced at his watch and smiled appreciatively at the audible evidence of enjoyment below. He smoothed down his hair—although it was never truly out of place—and gave a tug to his tie, his fingers gliding across a diamond-encrusted onyx tiepin in the shape of the frat’s Greek letters.

Showtime, folks.

Right on cue, as he made his measured descent, the thrumming techno beat was exchanged for a tinny rendition of ‘Hail to the Chief’. Corny but apt. Enthusiastic applause greeted his arrival, swelling as each inch of his well-tailored body came into view.

I hope you enjoy the anthology! They're all great stories!

So today is Valentine's Day, traditionally a day of love and romance. At the risk of repeating myself, I'm going to run the flash that I wrote for the holiday last year, because I like it that much, and plan to expand it. I hope you like it too. It's a bit of a twist on giving your heart to someone. Enjoy!

This is going to be a series, one that I call Losing My Religion. The first book has no name yet.

Someone had the worst timing in the world.

And judging by the jangled sounds of a lyre that emanated from his smartphone, it was his distant cousin and bandmate. When Sebastian caught up with Orpheus, he was going to have to hurt him for interrupting his pleasure.

“Who’s that, baby?” The man’s voice was muffled, its owner’s face buried in the thick pillows of the hotel’s double bed. Sebastian couldn’t remember his name. That was an inconsequential detail, nothing to clutter his mind with. Whoever he was, he had a very delicious ass, one that Sebastian had thoroughly enjoyed plowing. At least until the moment had been so rudely interrupted.

“Fuck me,” he muttered under his breath, before deigning to reply. “Someone. I won’t be long. Just lie there.” He pulled out, irritably, and slid off the other man, wrapping the sheet about him, ignoring the shiver his action produced. He grabbed the phone and stalked into the bathroom, firmly shutting the door behind him before answering.

“This better be damn good. I was busy—”

“I can only imagine.” A throaty chuckle from the other end of the line.

“Why don’t you find Cupid and torture him if you’re bored?” Sebastian searched his image in the mirror. The lighting was harsher than he might like, but he still looked damn good. That was one of the benefits of being a demigod. Maybe he hadn’t gotten the looks that some of them had, particularly the bastard offspring of Aphrodite, his own father’s consort. But Sebastian was certainly beautiful in his own right and he knew it.
He pushed back unruly locks of curly black hair that came just to the nape of his neck. Twisting his head for a better view, he decided he should let it grow out just a little more. The trace of sexy stubble that he maintained above his full carmine lips and along his jaw was pleasing to him—he’d keep that as it was.  His cool grey eyes were carefully lined in black. A perfect vision of loveliness. He blew a kiss at his reflection and smiled.

“Stop admiring yourself.” Orpheus laughed again. Sebastian scowled at the phone and turned from the mirror. “You know I can’t do that. The man’s busy, or have you forgotten what today is?”

It wasn’t so much that Sebastian had forgotten, he simply didn’t care. He found Cupid to be annoying, for the most part. Going on and on about love all the damn time. Like it really existed. Like it really mattered. As if it wasn’t anything more than hormonal urges that produced a vast mass hysteria. A hypnosis that muddled the brain and threw it into a tailspin from which it seldom recovered. It ruined lives, and made fools of normally intelligent men. The only useful byproduct was that it was also responsible for a great deal of violence, and had launched many a war.

Sebastian Laguerre loved no one but himself.

And thank the gods he was beyond Valentine’s Day.

“Go bother my brothers, why don’t you? I’m busy,” Sebastian repeated. Okay, technically Phobos and Deimos were half-brothers, but whatever.

“You’re the only one that likes to hang with them,” Orpheus pointed out. “Normal people avoid them.”

“Are you saying I’m not normal?”

“You’re you and I love you for who you are, Sebby.”

“Zeus’s beard, don’t call me that. I’m going. Go fuck yourself. Literally.” He clicked off the phone without waiting for the smart reply he knew was imminent and exited the bathroom. He let the sheet fall away as he wound his sinuous way back toward the bed; it trailed behind until he stepped from it. Dropping onto all fours, he crawled across the bed in a predatory manner.

“I’m back,” he purred in a sultry voice. The other man shivered in anticipation, lifting his head at Sebastian’s return, although he was well trained enough that he did not turn to look. “Miss me, love?”

“Mmm, yes, I did. Missed your cock up my ass. So much…”

“Of course you did.” Sebastian wore a very self-satisfied smirk. “Roll over, pet.”

“Is it time, then?”

“Mmmhmmm.”

He had a nice body, Sebastian admitted. Darryl? David? Dan? Something with a D, he was fairly sure. He was young, early twenties. Young and eager to please. And so far, he’d done a decent job of it. But, alas, all good things must come to an end. Sebastian wasn’t going to let that stop him from enjoying himself thoroughly.

He positioned himself between the boy’s legs—Dirk? Devin?—and took himself in hand, pumping his cock a few times. Orpheus’ ill-timed interruption had brought it down slightly, but a little well-applied pressure restored its former tumescent state.

“Now where were we?”

“About to reach glory,” the innocent supplied.

“Ah yes, just so.” He thrust inside of that tight channel in one hard stroke, producing a gasp of pure pleasure. Hot velvet surrounded his cock, a sensation heightened by the tightness of this boy’s muscles that clung so deliciously. “Touch yourself,” he instructed and the boy obeyed, grasping his cock and pumping.

“Not too fast,” Sebastian cautioned. “And don’t close your eyes. I want to see.”

The lids fluttered open again. Sebastian drove into him again, over and over, watching for the right moment. He’d know it by the boy’s responses. He’d see it in his eyes. He’d laid his instrument within reach; when he was ready he picked it up, looped the silk necktie about the boy’s neck and began to tighten it slowly, slowly…

Sebastian could see the play of emotions in the boy’s blue eyes as he spun into euphoria, until his orgasm was inevitable, and Sebastian had wrung out all that he could. As the boy came, he tightened the tie completely, until all breathing ceased.

Wednesday Briefs: Sebastian Laguerre

Happy Wednesday! It's not only Hump Day, but it's time for a weekly dose of flash fiction from the authors who write the Wednesday Briefs! This week, most of our prompts had a Valentine's Day theme. Those were: "Love makes the world go round" or use hearts or Cupid or "If ever I would leave you..." or "I give to you and you give to me... true love..." (That's an old Dean Martin song btw lol) or anything having to do with Valentine's Day and/or candy!

Because of the theme, I set Stan and Ollie aside for a week, but never fear, they shall return. Instead, I offer this, which has the working title of Sebastian Laguerre. I'd love to hear what you think of this, as I have hopes of expanding it. So, please enjoy! And don't forget to visit the other Wednesday Briefers, whose links follow my tale!

Wednesday Briefers: Stan and Ollie #4

Good morning and Happy Wednesday! Welcome to another edition of the Wednesday Briefs! This week, besides the picture prompts, we had the following written prompts: "You make a better door than a window" or use: spice, intense, cargo or "Falling in love again is like.." or use: secret, balance, radiation or "Look into my eyes..."

Last week, as you'll recall, in Stan and Ollie, a mysterious young woman in a bedraggled wedding dress shows up, and they call in Stan's sister, Gwin, to mind the store for them. Enjoy! And don't forget to visit the other Wednesday Briefers, whose links follow my tale.

Stan and Ollie #4

“What do we know so far?”

Ollie quickly swallows, gesturing with his fork toward the bride. “Her name’s Consuelo. Talk to her, Stan.”

In other words, interact with the client. If one can refer to someone in her condition as a client. Doesn’t that entail payment of some sort? Good thing we don’t rely on this as our main source of income. No sense in bringing that up, though, as Ollie would simply remind me that we don’t do this for the money, so why waste my breath?

I take the seat he just vacated. The bride eyes me warily—I half expect her to bolt, but she looks at Ollie, then back at me, and seems to settle down. At least for the moment.

“Hello Consuelo, I’m Stan.”

“Hello Stan.” Her voice is soft and shy and slightly resonates with an otherworldly quality. Not surprising, considering she’s dead. They all are. Spirits of the deceased who’ve lost their way, or who have unfinished business in this world. Somehow they find their way to Ollie, seeking to have some sort of balance restored in their life. Or death, I should say. Sometimes I wonder if he gives off some sort of radiation that’s only visible to those who’ve passed?

She shifts her weight in the chair. She’s dark haired and dark eyed. Big wide eyes, filled with apprehension, and sorrow, like two deep dark pools. Her long ruffled wedding gown seems much the worse for wear. I have the feeling that her death was of the violent variety.

Where to begin? At the beginning is usually the best place. But not all of the dearly departed are thinking in a rational manner, so sometimes linear logic is hard to come by.

I glance at Ollie, just long enough to be sure he’s still eating, then return my attention to the bride. The important thing is to focus on her life before we get to the unpleasant subject of her death. It’ll make things go much smoother, trust me on this one. “That’s a lovely dress,” I comment, seeing past the stains and the rips to what it must have been like when she first wore it. “I bet it was a beautiful wedding.”

Apparently I just said the wrong thing. She begins to wail like a fucking banshee, a siren-like caterwauling that slices through me. It’s no secret that I don’t have the same touch for this as Ollie does. He’s the sensitive one, I’m the boor.

Good thing this office is soundproofed for just such eventualities.

Ollie hastens around the desk and pulls up a chair on the other side of the howling ghost. He lays his hand upon her arm and just that suddenly she stills, her cries subdued to mere sniffles and trembles.

Thank God. I’d hate to have to kill her again.

“My wedding,” she says at last, staring up at Ollie with those big doe eyes. “I’m late for my wedding. Can you help me, please?”

“Of course we’ll help you,” Ollie assures her.

That’s all well and good, but unless we get some concrete facts, we’re not going anywhere. And while I’d be more than happy to stay here with Ollie and take care of the diner, obviously that’s not in the cards. Knowing my significant other as I do, he won’t rest until she does. Literally.

The trouble is that these spirits don’t all come through intact, if you know what I mean. Memories and all. Their grip on the reality of their death isn’t always the strongest. Might have to do a bit of investigating before we can figure out who exactly she is and where she comes from and the circumstances of her demise. That’s not always as easy as it sounds. Some of the clients we’ve dealt with hadn’t even had their remains discovered yet, so no newspaper stories, unless they were lucky enough to warrant mention of the missing person variety.

Maybe we’ll get lucky with this one.

Yeah, right. I’m not holding my breath either.

“Do you have a last name, Consuelo?” I lean forward in my chair, careful not to brush against her. She may not be corporeal in the strictest sense of the world, but there is a chill about her that is a bit disconcerting.

“Of course I have a last name.” She turns indignant eyes to me. “What do you take me for, a bastard?”

Jesus, ask a simple question…

“Stan, do you think I could get a milk shake, please?”

Ollie’s look is guileless, but I know better. He’s trying to diffuse the situation by momentarily removing me from it so he can get the information we need to do our job. Plus he’s partial to milk shakes. They don’t have them where he came from. He’s become addicted to them, so I’ve become somewhat of an expert at making them. It’s amazing he hasn’t blown up like a blimp, the way he consumes them. Damn alien metabolism.

“What kind?” I can check on the kitchen while I’m at it, although I’m sure if there were a problem, Gwin would come and get me.

“Chocolate mocha, please?”

“Sure.” Whatever he wants.

As I pass by him, he pulls me down for a kiss and my irritation melts. Damn smooth alien.

The dining room is doing well, although there’s no sign of the Princess, but Lorenzo has things well in hand.
“So where you off to?” Gwin asks while I blend the shake.

“Don’t know yet. Hopefully someplace without snow. I’ll let you know.”

Returning to the office, I knock again. Ollie opens the door, but before I can set foot inside, a small furry shape slips past me and inside. Just fucking great.

I kick the door shut and glare at the intruder. Like she cares.

“Stan.” Ollie distracts me with his touch. “Come see what I’ve found.” He leads me to my desk and my laptop.

Now this is interesting…

Wednesday Briefs: Trapped in Time #7

Happy Hump Day one and all, and welcome to more flash fiction brought to you by the Wednesday Briefers! Today the prompt was: "Hey diddle diddle the cat and the fiddle..." and the alternate prompts are: use sheep, backsliding, forest or ten o'clock scholar or "Dammit... I'm a ..., not a..." or Use any fair tale reference.

Last week, as you'll recall, in Trapped in Time, Myron made a new friend. Find out how things are going with our trio who are trapped in the time of dinosaurs! Then don't forget to see what the other Wednesday Briefers have done, their links will follow my story!

Enjoy!

Trapped in Time #7

“Are you forgetting something?” My fingers catch at Vittorio’s arm just as he is about to turn away; I swear there is a twinkle in his beautiful eyes. I realize he is just playing with me—he has not forgotten his promise.

“It is very hot here, si? Very humid.  Perhaps we should get cool while we can. We can watch out for other creatures while we bathe. Or perhaps Myron and his friend can do that?” He raises his eyebrows at Myron who is standing stock-still, the hairy creature riding his hip like a child clutching its mother. He looks between the monkey and us, but he does not speak.

“As long as he doesn’t look.” I insert a great deal of menace into my voice, hoping that alone will put the fear of God into the witless fool.  Not that I fear he will try to gaze upon me, but I do not wish him to see a sight that is meant for me alone—i.e. my naked lover. I send a glare toward Myron that he cannot help but receive, even if he does not acknowledge it; right now I suspect he is not in a mood to cause trouble. He seems very chastened, so perhaps it shall not be necessary for me to kick his backside. Yet.

“I’ll behave. I promise.” He hefts the monkey onto his hip, as if he is getting used to carrying the creature, and approaches my Vittorio with a timid look. “While you are… bathing… might I have my wand back?”

Vittorio and I exchange glances. “What are your thoughts, Doll?”

I’m tempted to take Myron’s wand and stick it someplace rather dark and scary and most assuredly painful, but it is just a piece of wood, after all. And it must possess some sort of power—it brought us here, did it not?

So let’s look at this logically. We can let him hold onto his wand and gain ourselves a little time alone together in the water. What is the worst that can happen? Maybe he gets it to work again, and then we go back home, and life goes on? Or maybe he gives us the double cross and he manages to get himself back to our time. In which case, Vittorio and I are still together and Myron is gone and now we are alone. Plus I suspect he would have a lot of explaining to do to a lot of people who will wonder what has happened to us, and who will know that we were all at the theatre together before we disappeared,  and then he will be—how do they say? All balled up.

“Let him have it.” I nod at my love. I think I’ve just surprised Myron. His mouth flops open, but no words come out.

Vittorio leans down and kisses me. He whispers, “Thank you, my love,” before he approaches Myron, wand in hand, holding it away from him, just out of his reach. “You will behave with this, si, Myron?”

Myron reaches for it in vain; Vittorio is too tall for him too, although Myron is not quite as short as I am. “Yes,” he acquiesces at last. The monkey imitates his actions—he reaches for the wand too and makes monkey noises.

“Very well.” Vittorio graciously hands Myron the wand. “Do not come near the water,” he admonishes him with a warning waggle of his finger. “You can bathe when we are done. Do you understand?”

Myron nods; the monkey nods with him.

“You should think of a name for your friend.” Vittorio grins at him. “So you have something to call him. Think of a nice name. We’ll be back.” He turns away from Myron and reaches for my hand.

Our fingers twine and my heart soars, and all thoughts of the animals, even the one named Myron, are quickly left behind as we head toward the river bank. We find a spot behind some thick foliage, first checking it for strange creatures. We cannot be too careful in this place. The branches are sturdy; we can lay our clothes out here to await our return. I suspect this might be where we’ll end up laundering our clothes at some point.

We help one another disrobe, and when we are both naked I cannot help but gaze at my Vittorio in open admiration. He is my Prince Charming, and I am his sweet baby, now and forever. He opens his arms to me and I leap into them; our lips become instantly engaged as he carries me into the water. It is warmer than I had expected, yet still cool enough to be refreshing.

We have no soap, obviously, a situation we must remedy in some way in the future, but for now we simply enjoy playing together, splashing one another, and kissing, and venturing out just a little, but not too far. And more kissing, rubbing our bodies together, his manhood pressed against mine. Would we had more privacy—the things that I wish we could do, but alas, there really is nowhere that will work for us.

That too must be remedied.

When I reach the point where kissing alone will not do, I lead Vittorio back to the secluded spot where we left our clothes, and bid him sit upon the shore, and then I take him into my mouth, and I breathe in his essence as he buries his fingers in my hair and cries my name in his ecstasy. Then we reverse positions, and it is I who scream Vittorio’s name, forgetful of where we are, and what ears may be listening.  But nothing comes near, to disturb us, and we cling together, sated, until Vittorio murmurs, “Let’s let Myron have his turn, then we must find a place to sleep.”

He is so wise, is my Vittorio. How can I fear the future when he is by my side?

I don’t.

Rudy's Red Nose Review

Rudy’s Red Nose
Author: Sui Lynn
Publisher: Silver Publishing
American release date: December 2, 2011
Format/Genre/Length: Ebook/M/M Romance/43pages
Publisher/Industry Age Rating: Mature
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★ (4.5 out of 5)

It’s Christmas in Montana, and while most people are preparing for the season with smiles and visions of sugarplums, foreign exchange student Rudy Stroh is feeling sorry for himself. Things aren’t working out as he’d wished. He can’t afford to go home for the holidays to see his family in far-off Austria; his brother, who should have joined him in America can’t because his grades weren’t good enough, and now he has nothing to do but pout and spend his time off from school by sitting in a coffee shop, staring out the window and dreaming of what might have been…

Synopsis:

Rudy loves to walk through the park, despite its Christmas decorations and the happy couples that seem to be everywhere—constant reminders that he is alone, both in terms of family and in not having a lover. He almost doesn’t notice a dilapidated tent behind one of the statues in the park, and the two who dart into it—a young boy and a young man. Perhaps Rudy wouldn’t have worried so, except that he can’t help but notice the weather is about to change for the worse, and since he has a big apartment and he is all alone…

Daring to speak up, he discovers that the older of the two is one of the waiters at the coffee shop he frequents—the really cute one he has been watching for a while now, never daring to try to get closer to him. His name is Benji, and the boy is his brother, Tommy. Rudy invites them to come stay with him, and Benji is reluctant, not wishing to be a burden or a charity case. But with the threat of a blizzard imminent, Rudy talks him into coming back with him, as much for Tommy’s sake as anything. Benji agrees, but only on the condition that he work for his keep, and Rudy agrees to that.

From the moment they enter Rudy’s life, things change. He isn’t lonely any more, and he focuses on making Christmas for this unfortunate pair as happy as he can, although sometimes it’s difficult to get Benji to go along with the program. But it’s Christmas, a time of hope, of joy, and of love? Can it work its magic on the hearts of these two young men? In making Christmas special for Benji and Tommy, Rudy finds that it has become special to him as well.

 Commentary:

Rudy’s Red Nose is a wonderful little Christmas story, one that will warm your heart like a cup of hot chocolate. Although short, it packs a punch, and you will come away from it believing in the power of Christmas, and the ability of love to cure anything.  A good read at any time of year, this is another keeper from author Sui Lynn. In this novella, she shows that a good writer doesn’t need explicit sex for a relationship to be hot, as two young men fall in love over one special Christmas.

Silver Shorts #24: Personal Business Chapter Four

Welcome to more of the Silver Shorts, free fiction that's available in anthology form at the Silver Site. Just go here to get your copy!

This week, I'm continuing with my PI novel, Personal Business. As you'll recall in the last chapter, Holden was checking out the fancy hotel that his ex manages, owned by his father-in-law. This week, we find out how he reacts to the sighting. Enjoy!

Personal Business

I didn't know he could still affect me like this. Here I was sure that seeing him would do nothing to me, have no effect on me, because this is nothing but business, pure and simple. I've got a job to do, and I'm doing it. It's been over fifteen years since he broke my heart. I'm a big boy now, and I got over him a long time ago.
Yeah, keep telling yourself that.
Even from a distance, even after all the years and all the heartaches and the multitude of nasty names I've called him and the curses I've rained on him and his progeny, should he ever have any, he still makes me rock hard at the mere sight of him because obviously my cock has no sense of either decorum or timing.
Damn. This business just got personal.
I feel a tug on my arm, and I'm drawn from my own little slice of Hell and back to reality by the short brunette at my side. "Looks like everything's kosher now." She grins at me and for a split second I think she's talking about me and him, but how could she possibly know about us; then I realize that she's talking about the situation with the bride and her daddy. She licks her lips at me in a way too obvious manner—subtlety is not this girl's friend, not even a passing acquaintance. "It's time for the toasts. Save me that dance, handsome." She stretches up without warning and tries to lay one on me, but luckily her aim is faulty and her lips collide with my cheek instead, with a soft smack; she doesn't notice as she pivots and wobbles off to the head table, to my immense relief.
I need a drink and I need it right now.
I thread my way through the guests, like I'm wading through the middle of a cattle drive; they're responding to the universal call for attention—a spoon being clinked against a glass. I don't have to look to know it's the father of the bride; he seems to be the man in charge here. Between him and his daughter, they seem to wear the pants in this relationship; as far as I can see, the groom is there as an obligatory placeholder, because you can't have a wedding without one. I suspect they would if they could.
If I were one of the invited guests, I suppose I'd be heading to my seat too, despite the fact that listening to congratulatory toasts, wedding or otherwise, is boring at best, and decidedly cliché and banal, and often painful. Who am I kidding? I'd still be headed toward the bar, but perhaps without quite the same sense of urgency.
Blondie's still there. He seems surprised to see me, since everyone else is headed toward the watering trough. Guess he thought he was going to get a respite from pouring draft beers and mixing cocktails, handing out the occasional bottle of soda pop. Guess what? No rest for the weary. Especially those who serve the public in the form of dispensing alcoholic refreshments.
"The same?" he queries, giving me a bland, yet calculated look. If he remembers what I ordered, I'll be flattered, but I'll also be surprised. Maybe he's a more astute observer of the human condition than I had him pegged for.
Either way, the answer's no.
"Just the Jack. Neat. And make it a double."
If I expected a comment or a question, I'm wrong, 'cause he does neither. Simply turns around, picks up the bottle of Jack Daniels—I see he does remember that I drink black label—and a clean glass, and pours, sight gauging it rather than using a shot glass. When he starts to replace the bottle on the back bar, I reach out and arrest his movement, gripping his arm lightly but firmly.
"Might as well leave that, I aim to have a few."
He nods and settles the bottle back onto the bar. I release his arm, grab the glass and bolt it, letting it burn all the way down. "Another, please."
I bolt the second one as well. "Tough night?" he asks. I detect a trace of human kindness beneath the professional veneer, but he might as well save it, I'm not in the market. Or in the mood.
"Just thirsty." My eyes meet his and I dare him to make something out of my words, almost challenging him. He doesn't take the bait.
"Another?" is all he says. I nod and he does his thing. Suddenly he hands me one of the bar napkins. What, am I drooling or something. He motions to his cheek, and then I understand. The evidence must be in plain view. I take a swipe at it, and it comes away reddened.
Either I'm a slow drinker, or the toasts went down quicker than I expected they would. Maybe they didn't have anything particular to say, or maybe these people find it as boring as I do. For whatever reason, someone seems to have cued the band, because suddenly they've broken into "Unchained Melody", and the happy couple has taken their place on the dance floor while friends and family look on in loving adoration.
Like watching a ten car pile-up before the accident's even happened. Knowing it's going to happen, just not knowing when or how. At least that's my take on it, as viewed through the bottom of a glass of whiskey. No, I'm not drunk by any means, just cynical.
Happily ever after is the perfect ending that everyone strives for, the belief that nirvana can be ours if we only try hard enough. That finding the right person is a simple matter of X + Y = eternal bliss and the boogey man will never come knocking at your door. But there is no true happy ending, not in the real world. It's a temporary state of grace, granted a couple until reality sets in. It's mortgages and kids, and figuring out how to pay the bills, how to keep up with the Joneses, how to be yourself when your spouse is trying to mold you into his or her idea of what you should be. After the honeymoon—if the euphoria even lasts that long—the masks come off along with the gloves; faces are revealed, and suddenly you realize the person you thought you knew was not really that person at all.
Doesn't mean I don't still want it—I'm just realistic about it, that's all. Doesn't help that I'm not at my most optimistic at this moment, either.
"I'm going to take a quick break. Want anything before I go?"
I shake my head, and for one irrational moment I'm half afraid he's going to ask me if I want to go with him, but he doesn't, and I get over myself, and the moment passes. I glance toward the dance floor. Mr. and Mrs. Just Married have been joined by Mr. and Mrs. I'm Paying For This Shindig, and a few others. I raise my glass to them. "Mazeltov." And then I drain it.
The first dance ends to the obligatory polite applause, the second begins, but I'm taken aback a bit when I hear the familiar strains of Kenny Chesney. I hadn't expected that. The music goes straight to my heart, and I'm suddenly feeling too maudlin for comfort. I need to shake this feeling or I'm never going to make it. And fucking up this job is not an option.
Maybe I should clear my head, gain a fresh perspective, and start again.
Naturally Jeremy's nowhere to be seen. What, did I expect him to hang around? It's only reasonable to assume he's got things to do. Things that don't involve hanging around someone else's wedding. Well, good for him.
Dammit, how could I have forgotten that I told a certain someone I line dance? I don't remember my words until they come back to haunt me; she's hanging on my arm and dragging me out to the dance floor. I dart a quick glance at Blondie, who's just walked out from behind the bar; he shrugs and offers me a quirky smile, as if there's something in the situation he finds amusing. It certainly doesn't amuse me.
She keeps tugging at me, and although I'm a lot stronger than she is, my daddy raised me not to fight with women so I just go along with her for now; I'll ditch her as quickly as humanly possible. I clap one hand on my hat, just so I won't lose it, and then we're lining up and the music pulls me along, and I fall into the steps naturally.
Nothing overly complicated; it's still early after all. Just something for the band to warm up on. A few simple shuffles, a little jazz box, and some grapevines for good measure. I think this little gal's drinks are catching up with her. She's less than coordinated, and she slides right when she should be sliding left; we collide smack dab in the middle. Not fazed in the slightest, she grinds her hip against mine, like it's part of the routine. Or maybe she's practicing to be a hoochie coochie dancer. If so, she needs a lot more practice, and a whole lot more coordination. And a lot less coochie.
I try to push her into an upright position, so she can get with the program and fall back into step, but she doesn't seem to be so inclined; in fact, she seems to be under the mistaken impression that she and I are joined at the hip—if not a bit farther south—and I damn near stumble when she slips her leg in between mine. She giggles, as though she's just done something extraordinarily cute, and I firmly, but gently, pry her off of me, and back into her own space. I'm half tempted to tell her we don't even play for the same team, but before I can start to get the words out, a large ape in an ill-fitting suit comes out of nowhere; he sweeps her away from me as I cheer the arrival of the cavalry. My relief turns sour when he plants himself in my path while I'm trying to finish my grapevine, and his eyes are flashing and somehow I don't think he's about to thank me for anything any time soon.
Oh Lordy, this night's going just getting ten kinds of ugly, and it's far from over.
"Whaddya think you're doin'?" He pushes his lantern-jawed face close to mine. I remind myself I'm working, so I need to play nice, no matter what.
"It's called line dancing, maybe you've heard of it?" So much for the diplomatic route.
My wit sails right over his head; why am I not surprised?
"I saw you before, talking to my Darcy, and I don't like it." He narrows his beady little eyes until they almost disappear into his face, and then he growls at me in that alpha male way some guys think is intimidating. I don't happen to be one of them. I just find it ridiculous, to be honest.
"You're standing in my way." I try to be polite, but he's making it hard. When he doesn't budge, I give up and grapevine to the right instead.
He doesn't take the hint; he places his bulk in my path again. He's disrupting the other dancers now, what few there are. Grumbling, they pull back and re-form, leaving a gap around us as though they're afraid we might be catching; they continue to dance, out of harm's way. The song is by Keith Urban, whom I happen to like. Even if Lester McCann isn't doing it justice. This is just plain getting annoying.
"If you want to dance, you're going about it in the wrong way," I venture cheekily. "And you're asking the wrong person."
"What? Do I look like I'm a faggot to you?"
Oh damn, did he have to say that?
"Mister, look." I'm barely keeping myself in check now. At least I don't come out with the first words that pop into my brain, something along the lines of 'no self-respecting faggot would have you'. I tell myself I have to try to get through to King Kong that this is not the smart way to go before one of us does something he'll regret. And it won't be me.
"I don't have any problem with you, or you me, so please don't go there, okay? Go be with your lady and have a good time, why don't you?"
I can see the confusion in his eyes—he's trying to sort out whether I'm gay or not, or if I think he's gay or not, and if I'm gay then why is he bothering with this fight, and as that convoluted bit of logic temporarily occupies both of his brain cells, he doesn't have the wherewithal to continue to argue with me. So he grunts something in his native tongue, and I think that maybe things will just blow over and I'll slip out the door and see if I can locate Jeremy and do what I'm being paid to do, which sure as hell doesn't include getting into a fight in the middle of a wedding.
Just when I think everything's going to work out for the best, and I'm taking a step toward the door, then of course that's when everything goes to hell in a hand basket. That's the unfortunate moment when the little lady who's the cause of this mess chooses to add her two cents to the equation, as though the devil's just sporked her purple-bowed ass with his pitchfork and told her she needs to speak up and put a crimp in the situation.
"Oh Jim, you always spoil everything. Leave my cute cowboy alone!"
Well, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know this won't go over well, and it sure as hell doesn't. He hollers something unintelligible and takes a clumsy swing at me and I duck, giving up any attempt at dancing, which I really hadn't wanted to do in the first place. But that's beside the point. Nobody with an IQ in the single digits is going to tell me what to do or when to do it.
I don't return his punch. First, it didn't connect. Second, I have the advantage, despite being not as bulky as he is, because I'm lighter on my feet, and I have a bit of training in self-defense. Nothing formal, just stuff I've picked up over the years. And third, he's drunker than I am.
So much for line dancing. Everyone's stopped now, although the band plays on, oblivious. They're playing Billy Currington now, too slow for line dancing, more of a two-step kind of number. Under other circumstances I wouldn't be averse to cuddling up with a cute guy on the dance floor. But not here and not now.
"Dance with your woman," I suggest. "It's a great song."
"You dance with her if you want her so badly," he cries, rather illogically, and while I'm pondering what exactly I should respond to that that'll make any sense, he charges me like he's seen way too many old Three Stooges shorts, and he thinks he's the bull, and I'm the stupid matador with the bull's-eye painted on my back. I manage to step aside when I see him rev up his engine.
Unfortunately, the best laid plans are often destroyed by harmless but clumsy idiots, as some fool proceeds to demonstrate when he bumps into me and pushes me straight into the bull's path, and he lands on top of me and he and I both go down in a heap.
At that point, he simply attempts to pummel me with brute force and while I'm pinned beneath his weight, there isn't a whole lot I can do. At first I concentrate on avoiding his blows, although I feel some manage to connect, mostly in the vicinity of my face. And although discretion is the better part of valor, my motto is don't fuck with me, and I ball up a fist and strike him sharply upside his head. Once, then twice, while attempting to get him to move his bulk.
That finally gets his attention and he shakes his head as if I've just rung his bell. I manage to push him back off of me far enough that I can half sit up, but the clumsy fool grabs at me again; he manages to tear the button loose that's holding my jacket closed and it falls open and damned if he doesn't spot my holster and gun. I've got a license to carry, but I don't like to advertise the fact that I do.
Of course he can't be quiet about it and starts screaming that I've got a gun, which sets off a hundred other screams, some of them female, and the whole place begins to panic as if he's just uncovered a nest of terrorists that are about to blow everyone in the place up in order to strike a blow against democracy.
I scramble backwards, trying to get away from this unmitigated cacophony and rise to my feet and get the fuck out of Dodge while the getting's good. Way not to draw attention to yourself, I castigate myself, thinking maybe taking this case wasn't the best idea I ever had. I don't seem to be able to put it on quite the level of business that I need to in order to maintain proper objectivity.
In other words, he's already got me making a jackass out of myself, and he hasn't said a word directly to me. This is all the result of getting a glimpse of his handsome face. I hate to think what I'd do if I had to confront him or, heaven forbid, talk to him.
We're both on our feet now, and confusion reigns as people grab me, grab him, grab each other.
"What's going on?" an elderly lady demands to know in a high pitched voice. She's standing beside the bride, who's in tears, and her father's looking right at me like I'm the devil incarnate, but he doesn't step any closer to me than he can help, no doubt having also caught a glimpse of my piece. What I don't know is that he must have called security, and that's why he looks so smug, but I figure it out when two guys in cheap imitation blues, sporting embroidered names, grab me. One twists my arm behind my back; the other applies a chokehold that leaves me speechless. Together they wrestle me out of the ballroom, and into the hall, dragging me between them.
I can barely breathe, and I can't free the arm that's beginning to throb like a son of a bitch, which if he keeps on like that is likely to come out of its socket. At least then I can charge the bastard with assault, but I'd rather it not come to that. They snatch my gun and throw me bodily into the elevator. I hit the floor hard, but at least I can take a breath now, as I lie there, clutching my arm and taking great gulps of the stale air; it has a sweaty smell that must be them, it sure can't be the hotel. At least I hope it isn't.
I'm guessing they're going to physically escort me to the front door and make sure I leave the premises, and I've already decided that for tonight that seems to be the way to go—once I get my weapon back—until I notice that rent-a-cop #1 hasn't pushed L for Lobby, but 5 instead. What the hell?
I try to collect my thoughts in the short interval between leaving the third floor and arriving at the fifth. I back myself into the corner, using it as leverage to get to my feet, careful to avoid using my bad arm. Gingerly I feel along my aching jaw. I can taste blood; when I get home, I'll have to check my teeth, just to make sure they're all there. I think he missed my eye, but my cheekbone feels bruised. I shake my head to get my hair out of my eyes, just as the doors open into a large and stunning white and gold room filled with elegant furniture and expensive sculptures. These aren't like the modern crap downstairs, these look like maybe they're Greek or something; not that I know a whole lot about art. But I know a nude male when I see one, and a nicely hung one at that.
"Look," I try to reason with the two goons. "I have a permit, I can show it to you—"
"Shut up," rent-a-cop #2 snarls. He grabs the lapel of my poor abused jacket, and yanks me from the elevator in the direction of a dark wood door that lies on the other side of the room. I stumble on the plush carpet, falling against a white brocade sofa with satin pillows.
"Be grateful we haven't called the law on you," the first one adds. At this moment, I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. Probably not, since I know most of the cops on the force, and they know me, and they'd probably tell these two posers the same thing I've told them—that I've got the right to carry and to leave me the fuck alone.
Whatever they have in mind, I don't think I'm going to like it, but right now I don't see a way around it, though I'm thinking about it. At least I'm trying to.
Maybe the Neanderthal downstairs scrambled my brains more than I realized, or else I'm not as quick on the uptake as I'd like to think. As they haul me to my feet again, my eyes fall upon the gold lettering on the door, and I actually read them, as it dawns on me just where I'm heading; where they're taking me.
Where else? To the manager's office. Duh.
Just as I think that, the door opens, and a figure stands there, looking finer than a body has a right to. He glances at me, glances at them, then stands back.
"Bring him in," he says, motioning with one hand.
If anything, his voice has only improved with age, gotten sultrier, and acquired a rumble to it that was lacking before. Maturity, I guess. Or fine living. All I know is that I'm about to come face to face with the ghost of long lost loves past. A little more up close and personal than I bargained for when I decided to come here tonight.
Or was this what I was secretly hoping for?
