Wednesday Briefs: Bad Karma and the Family Plan #85 (18.1)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

A new twist in the confusing saga has now developed. Namely the presence of a small stuffed gator meant for Vinnie! Could this mean what it appears to mean? See what's going on in this week's chapter of Bad Karma and the Family Plan! Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them. Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

Bad Karma and the Family Plan #85 (18.1)

I know it’s silly to be taken aback by something so harmless, but the memories that tiny gator invoked…. Well, let’s say they weren’t pleasant.

“Vinnie…Vinnie…”

Ethan’s concerned voice drew me back to the present. He was stroking my cheek, and the expression in his beautiful blue eyes was one of alarm.

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to space out like that.” I gave him a weak smile, but I knew he understood why I was rather upset. Not to mention this suddenly pointed the grave finger of suspicion toward someone I’d rather forget entirely, but he was making that difficult.

Who else could have sent such a chilling message but Chip, aka the Mangler? The million dollar question was—what did Chip have to do with anything?

“Isn’t that so cute?” St. Clair kept babbling on while my blood turned to ice. “And wasn’t that very thoughtful of him to send it to you? Although, to be honest, I’m not sure why he bothered. Come to think of it, he did seem rather obsessed with you. Even though you aren’t in the industry or anything. I kept telling him you’re no one important, but he just wouldn’t listen.”

My stomach churned at her words even as the truth slapped me in the face. But how? Why? He was safely locked away, behind bars awaiting trial. We’d ascertained that oursleves. Was this Billy Faulkner an accomplice of his? A henchman on the outside, committed to assist the Mangler in his dirty deeds?

Would I never be free of the man?

I couldn’t refrain from shuddering. Ethan helped me to my feet, anchoring me with his arm about my waist. “Miss St. Clair, you’ve been very helpful,” he said. Troy and Brendan had risen too, I noticed. As we started to walk away, Ethan paused and turned back.

“Oh, just ne more question, if you don’t mind. How did that stuffed animal arrive?”

The small gator still sat on her hand, as neither one of us had attempted to claim it. I mean, why would we?

“In the mail. How else, silly?” She cackled, as if she found herself amusing. I’m pretty sure no one else did.

Troy and Brendan made their good-byes as Ethan ushered me out of the building, back to our car.  I was doing my best not to panic, but failing at that pretty much. I kept remembering how St. Clair was able to escape her environs simply by using a double. Could Chip have done the same? Was he out there even now, stalking me…hunting me…waiting his opportunity to pounce? Bil rose in my throat that I had to force back down.

“What if it’s him? What if he’s out?” I asked, somewhere between a whimper and a whisper.

Ethan wrapped his arms around me and held me tightly. “I don’t see how, but that’s something we can check on.

Troy and Brendan caught up with us then. To my dismay, I noticed Troy gingerly held the little gator. Why?

He answered my unspoken question before holding it out toward Ethan. “I just thought maybe there’s something on it. You know, like DNA or fingerprints or something?”

Who was the law enforcement officer here? I should have thought of that, but in my defense, I was a bit busy freaking out.

“Good thinking,” Ethan said. “Hang on a second.” He kissed me tenderly before he released me and opened the passenger door. Opening the glove compartment, he rummaged around for a second before coming out with a plastic bag. “I remember seeing this,” he explained as he carefully bagged the evidence. Evidence of what I wasn’t sure, but it was something.

Once he’d secured that, he pulled out his phone. I heard him talking to Anderson briefly before he hung up. “We’re going to find out if that is really him down in Florida, or an imposter.”

Would this nightmare never end?

Wednesday Briefs: Bad Karma and the Family Plan #83 (17.3)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

The boys have arrived at the rather luxurious mental health facility where a certain actress is being held in lieu of going to jail. Will they be able to get any information out of her? Or are they wasting their time? See what's happening in this week's chapter of Bad Karma and the Family Plan. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them. Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

Bad Karma and the Family Plan #83 (17.3)

The solarium was actually not difficult to find. Sunny and inviting, it seemed to be the destination of choice for a number of the inmates and their visitors. Comfortable, pricey-looking furniture placed in strategic locations seemed to scream rest and relaxation. No troubles here, only peace and harmony. Maybe that’s why there wasn’t a red or orange in sight, just blues and greens. While in the background piano music played softly.

“I see them.” Ethan nudged me and discreetly pointed to an area in the corner. Then I spotted them. Troy and Brendan sat together on a loveseat while you-know-who was seated on an adjoining sofa, poised on the edge of the cushions as she gave them her undivided attention. There was no sign of her cohort in crime—what was her name? Oh yeah, Helen.  I imagined she didn’t have the financial means to afford such a place as this. Or maybe her lawyer hadn’t been able to swing it on the government dime.

Well, here goes nothing.

Ethan took my hand as we made our way over to the trio. St. Clair glanced our way, but she didn’t give us the startled expression I was expecting. I guess Troy had paved the way for our arrival. Probably just as well. She didn’t even give Ethan her usual sappy smile. Guess because she wasn’t showing off for her director ex any more. And I guessed she wasn’t in the mood to antagonize me right then. Probably too happy to have her buddy with her.

“Well, well, look what the cat dragged in,” were her first words.

I might have to rethink that whole not antagonizing me thing. Assuming the words were aimed at me. Maybe it was both of us.

“Carrie,” Troy chided her.

“Sorry. Old habits die hard.” She giggled. A rather incongruous sound, all in all, and considering her current circumstances. But then again she had been in a place like this for a while now. Should be familiar to her.

Hmmm, where to sit? I wasn’t about to place either Ethan or myself in any closer proximity to the witch than we had to. At the same time, we did need to get information from her. Luckily, Troy, ever the gentleman, realized our predicament.

He rose to his feet in greeting as we approached, saying, ”Brendan and I call dibs on sitting by Carrie.” He winked at us surreptitiously as we took their places on the loveseat and they settled next to the actress on the couch.

Whew, crisis averted.

“How are you boys doing?” St. Clair greeted us. She wore might have been a designer gown, although where she came up with one of those on such notice, I couldn’t say. It was covered in a jewel-studded floral pattern that looked a lot like paisley. Tacky was the word that came to my mind. “I see Ethan hasn’t given you the big heave-ho yet.”

That barb was aimed directly at me, naturally. Still her same old charming self. Well, two can play that game. Without hesitation, I shot back, “No he hasn’t,” even as I held up my hand to display my engagement ring. “Speaking of which, how is Gordon Daimler?”

My arrow hit its mark. Score one for Vinnie. Look, she had it coming.

Wednesday Briefs: Bad Karma and the Family Plan #75 (15.5)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Imagine Vinnie's horror to learn they actually have to talk to the evil actress again, to learn more about the mystery director who was responsible for her irresponsible behavior! See what's happening in this week's chapter of Bad Karma and the Family Plan. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them. Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

Bad Karma and the Family Plan #75 (15.5)

Much as I despised the idea of speaking to the crazy witch, I understood that it was probably our quickest way of getting any information from her—providing I wasn’t doing the questioning, of course. There was a mutual antipathy there that nothing would probably ever lessen…at least on my part. As for her, she was crazy so there was no rhyme or reason as to her thought processes.

Ethan made a quick call to Anderson to find out where Crazy Pants was being held. I presumed at the nearest police station, but that proved not to be the case. Why was I not surprised to find she had wangled her way into a mental health facility just outside of Atlanta? It had always been my experience that money talked louder than common sense, so did being famous. That meant the rich and the famous had it ten times easier than us poor working stiffs.

I listened as Ethan explained what we’d come up with, and how we felt we needed to speak with her, and that she knew more than she was letting on. I could sense Anderson’s reluctance when Ethan brought up Troy and Brendan, as well as Benny. But my silver-tongued boy got his way, especially when he mentioned that we would be heading toward our objective anyway—i.e. getting Benny to Atlanta in time for him to testify. And Troy knew her better than we did and had a higher likelihood of getting her to spill the beans than we did.  What about my own misgivings? At one time, I thought she had a crush on Ethan, but it turned out she was pretending to be with him in order to make her ex-boyfriend, the aforementioned director Daimler, jealous.  Can’t say I was exactly thrilled with that situation, especially since she forced Ethan and me to resort to some pretty extreme methods to be together. But at least I understood that her feelings for Ethan were as phony as she was. After a few minutes of conversation,  Ethan gave us a thumbs up as he hung up with our supervisor and I mentally prepared myself to face what was coming.

Anderson had agreed to our plan, but it turned out there was a proviso. We had to wait until the next day to approach her, as apparently she wasn’t in any shape to be dealt with today. Maybe they’d drugged her or something, I didn’t know. But at least we were getting somewhere. And, to be honest, I didn’t mind any postponement of that meeting. If it were up to me, we could wait for it until the next millennium.

Just kidding…sort of.

Which now left us with another day to kill. Ethan texted Carlos and let him know what was going on, and he just said to keep him apprised, he wasn’t going anywhere. Troy and Brendan decided they wanted to drive around and soak up some of the local atmosphere. I took that as a subtle hint that they wanted some alone time, and I couldn’t blame them for that. So Ethan and I went to see if we could do anything to help Maureen.

“Well, if you wouldn’t mind, it’s such a lovely day, I was about to hang out the wash on the clothesline,” she said.

“We’d love to,” Ethan said.

Wasn’t that why people had driers, I wondered, but I wisely remained quiet, and helped Ethan carry two baskets of laundry to the backyard.

Wednesday Briefs: Bad Karma and the Family Plan #70 (14.5)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Vinnie is so confused by what's going on. Nothing makes sense? Audition? Is she for real? See what's going on in this week's chapter of Bad Karma and the Family Plan. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what they're up to. Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

Bad Karma and the Family Plan #70 (14.5)

Troy moved quickly, blocking either woman from getting into his rental car. He gave her an apologetic glance, even as she began to pout.

“We want to ride with you, Troy. Where you going? Back to Hicksville? Never mind, doesn’t matter.” She sidled up to Troy, giving him what was probably meant to be a winsome and oh so charming smile, even as she lightly pressed her fingertips on his shoulders, as if to anchor herself to him.

“You know what? I have the most scathing idea,” she continued, completely oblivious to everyone around her, too focused on Troy to care, obviously. “Let’s drive back to Hollywood and surprise everyone. Won’t that be fun? I’ll get you an audition too, with my director. Just think of it! The hottest actress and actor back together again! The fans will love it, don’t you know?”

I started to move toward the delusional actress, but Ethan lightly restrained me, as if to say let’s let Troy handle this, see where it goes. I responded with a reluctant nod, and the other agents followed our lead. I supposed not interacting with her would be for the best. At least, until it was necessary.

Troy never missed a beat, never appeared flustered in any way, as he kept her attention focused on him. “That would be lovely, Carrie,” he agreed. “I bet we could break some box office records, you and me.”

“Absolutely!” She seemed to visibly relax, although her friend Helen seemed a little nervous, but she didn’t say anything, just clung to her side. At least they weren’t still attempting to get inside the car, although nothing said they wouldn’t try that stunt again.

By now, the other vehicles were on their way. We just had to deal with this situation, and we could be too. But it had to be handled delicately, for obvious reasons—no telling if that gun Little Miss Crazypants was carrying was for show or for real.

“Who’s the director?” Troy continued. “Anyone I’ve worked with before? What kind of film will it be?”

St. Clair furrowed her brow in thought. “I don’t really know,” she admitted at last. “Something about a serial killer, I believe he said. Maybe a kidnapping or something? But he’s very famous. I just can’t tell you his name right now.” She released a high-pitched giggle.

My blood ran cold at the mention of serial killer and kidnapping. Could someone possibly be thinking of filming a movie about the Mangler?  If so, would that include myself and Ethan? That was a most disturbing thought.

Troy ran an exasperated hand through his blond hair, but he never lost his cool with her. Like Ethan, he has the patience of a saint. I don’t know how they do it. I just wanted to yell at her until she spilled the beans. Forewarned is forearmed, after all.

“You can tell me, Carrie,” he coaxed. “It’s me, Troy. Your best friend. Don’t I deserve to know who I’m going to audition for? I should prepare, don’t you think?”

She appeared to consider his argument, before shaking her head vehemently. “Not yet. He said it would spoil the surprise.” She cocked her head and looked up at him coyly. “Maybe if you buy me an ice cream, I’ll tell you what you want to know. I’m in the mood for chocolate mint chip, and lots of it.”

So much for that idea.

“Maybe later, Carrie.” Troy sighed in defeat and motioned to us. Ethan, in turn, gestured toward Carlos and his partner. They carefully approached the actress from behind.

“You have the right to remain silent,” Carlos intoned, as both St. Clair and her friend Helen were cuffed and led away.

The actress tried to squirm out of the cuffs, with no luck. She twisted and turned toward where we still stood. “Troy, help me!” she begged, a note of hysteria rising in her voice.

“I am,” he said softly, although I knew she couldn’t hear him now.  He appeared to be devastated, but at the same time somewhat resigned. What a sad end for someone who once had such potential.

Brendan pulled Troy into a warm embrace, and we all stood there until Carlos’s car was out of sight. The other agents remained. I knew they intended to follow us to the tire store.

“Guess we’ll catch up with you up the road a bit,” Troy said.

“Be careful,” Ethan said. Once they’d pulled away, he turned to his uncle, who of course had remained with us. “Ready?”

Benny nodded, and we piled into our rental, ready for this trip to be over, somehow knowing it wouldn’t be that easy.

Wednesday Briefs: Bad Karma and the Family Plan #69 (14.4)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Well, the cat's out of the bag now. It was Caroline St Clair all along! But why? So many questions, so few answers! See what's going on in this week's chapter of Bad Karma and the Family Plan. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them. Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

Bad Karma and the Family Plan #69 (14.4)

“You did all of this…for an audition?”  I knew Hollywood was nutso, but this went past that. Far past that. What sort of audition required an actor to terrorize people for real, people who weren’t involved in any actual way? I glanced at Ethan. His face showed a great deal of the skepticism I felt. Even Troy seemed suspended in a little disbelief, and he worked in the industry.

Something just did not make sense here. I cast my mind back, trying to remember everything that had happened in just the past couple of days. The attempted shooting at the hotel where Benny was in protective custody. The Atlanta threats. The mysterious woman at the rest stop. The slashed tires. The call to me. The false detour that led to all our tires being blown out.

When added up and put together, this seemed like a whole lot more than one crazy actress could manage on her own. Frankly, I didn’t think she was smart enough to cause this sort of chaos. A shiver ran up my spine. Somehow, I didn’t think we’d reached the source of our problem by any means.

“Look.” Carlos lowered his voice, addressing Ethan and myself. Not that the actress was paying attention to us, prattling on to Troy and Brendan. Sarah listened to her with wide eyes. I suspected she wouldn’t be quite as starstruck after this experience. “I don’t understand what is going on here, to be honest, but I’m only here to provide back-up for you guys. So it’s your call, what do you want to do about this woman?”

What indeed? That was the million dollar question, wasn’t it?

“I appreciate that,” Ethan said, casting a quick glance toward the woman in question. “To be honest, I don’t see her as any sort of a threat. I think the more immediate concern is getting these vehicles repaired and back on the road.”

Carlos nodded. “This is going to take more than a regular roadside assistance call, I’m afraid.”

Truer words were never spoken. Luckily, the damage to the vehicles wasn’t as bad as we’d feared. The resourceful Anderson sent us a very competent government mechanic who was able to get everyone back on four wheels, at least temporarily. His repairs would last long enough to make the trip to the nearest tire store.

We sent off Ethan’s parents first, along with Sarah and Alex and Uncle Benny. To his credit, the little boy’s behavior was stellar, but he seemed to be getting a little cranky. I didn’t blame him. I was feeling a little out of sorts myself.

Once Troy’s car was back in commission, he gave Ethan and I an inquisitive look. I had a feeling I knew what he was asking, which was verified when a certain actress took her assistant by the arm and attempted to get into Troy’s back seat. Where did she think she was going?  She was truly delusional if she thought she didn’t have consequences to face.

Bad Karma and the Family Plan #68 (14.3)

Caroline St. Clair—for it was indeed none other than the Wicked Witch of Hollywood herself—was grinning broadly, like the proverbial feline who had just consumed an avian snack. She took another gracious bow for her imaginary audience and then began to throw out kisses. No doubt she was visualizing the invisible members of the Academy as they conferred upon her an equally imaginary Oscar.

Seriously, what was wrong with that woman?

“I had you going, didn’t I?” the actress chortled. “You never knew it was me, did you? It’s been me this whole time.”

Whole time…what?

Troy had reached her by that time and demanded the surrender of the handcuff key, although in far nicer tones than I would have used. She didn’t even argue or fuss, as though all of that meant nothing to her any more. He wasted no time in releasing Ethan, who rubbed his wrists as he quickly strode to my side.

“I’m fine, Vinnie,” he reassured me as he hugged me, before I even had a chance to ask. Told you, he knows me very well.

“Carrie, why are you even here? What’s going on?” Troy sounded both sad and exasperated. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. She was his friend, even if she was utterly cuckoo.

Sarah edged up to us, little Alex on her hip. Even he seemed speechless, as he tried to absorb what was happening around him. “Is that who I think it is?” she asked in an incredulous voice.

“I’m afraid so,” Ethan replied.

Ethan’s parents quickly joined us. Maureen’s “Are you okay, Ethan?” was echoed by the minister’s query of “Are you all right, son?” He reassured them he was fine.

In the meantime, the other agents were looking to us for some sort of explanation.

“Do you have any idea what’s going on?” Carlos asked.

I pointed toward St. Clair with one hand and drew a circle by my head with the other. “She’s nuts,” I replied, although that wasn’t really an adequate explanation, was it? I turned my attention back to the curious tableau before us. The other person in the scenario, the one she’d addressed as Helen, had taken a protective stance by her side.

“What do you mean, audition?” Troy was saying.

The actress giggled, suddenly distracted by Brendan’s presence at Troy’s side.  “Hi Brendan!” She waved at him, and he managed a wave back. It occurred to me that perhaps he’d accompanied Troy to visit her, so she was undoubtedly aware of who he was.

“Carrie,” Troy attempted to get her to focus on his words. “Please tell me why you’re even here. And why did Marlene take your place in rehab?” He took one of her hands in his, as if to ground her.

“You know how this business is,” she said in a chipper voice. “Out of sight, out of mind. People forget you exist, and try getting any good roles then! I didn’t want to become a has-been, did I? And I was just languishing there, doing nothing, when I needed to be out there, working…”

Her voice trailed away as she glanced around her. Everyone was staring at her, for obvious reasons. Her glance lighted on me and she began to smile, even as she waved.

“Vinnie! I got you good, didn’t it? Admit it! You thought that Mangler guy was after you again, didn’t you? I scared the bejesus out of you, and you never knew it was me.”

I never wanted to hit someone as badly as I wanted to deck her, but my mother didn’t raise me to hit women. But my mouth sometimes worked faster than my brain, as I spat out, “You bitch!”

I was starting to believe she was indeed responsible for our ills, at least some of them. But her explanation was just not making sense.

Wednesday Briefs: Bad Karma and the Family Plan #34 (7.2)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

A suspicious Vinny calls Troy to find out if his less than favorite actress is still in the loony bin. See what's happening in this week's chapter of Bad Karma and the Family Plan. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them. Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

Bad Karma and the Family Plan #34 (7.2)

I knew Ethan wasn’t likely to leave things alone, and he didn’t. After a few minutes, I felt his fingers caress my thigh before he asked, “So, Sherlock, what did you find out? Is the big bad actress on the loose, a menace to society?”

“Ha ha, very funny,” I retorted, although I took no actual offense at his comment. “No, she’s safely locked up and probably being pampered to within an inch of her miserable life.” Okay, maybe that was petty, but I didn’t really care.

“Feel better?”

“I don’t know.” I knew I should, having heard Troy’s assurances of her location. I mean, he would probably be the first to find out if Miss Looney Tunes were released, even for a day. Even so, I knew what I’d seen…even if I didn’t know who I’d seen. And maybe that was what bothered me—the not knowing.

“Vinny, why didn’t you let me talk to him?” That was Sarah now, grumbling at me from the back seat. “I asked you very nicely.”

My bad, guess I hadn’t heard her request, too focused on the matter at hand. “Sorry, Sarah,” I apologized. “But to be honest, I doubt he had time. He’s anxious to get back to his sweetie. Don’t worry. I’m sure you’ll meet him sometime.”

“Maybe I should move to Roanoke,” she joked…at least I think she was joking. I didn’t know her well enough to be able to tell. I saw Ethan glance into the rearview mirror at her.

“Is that something you’re considering?” he asked. I turned a little, just to watch her expression. At the moment, she seemed a little weary, maybe even somewhat defeated. Understandable, all things considered. I would be too after what she’d been through.

She released a long drawn-out sigh. “I don’t know. Right now, I don’t know where my head is…or my heart. Or much of anything else. All I really do know is that I have to take care of Alex, to the best of my ability. He’s my priority.”

I watched her set her hand on the arm of the sleeping child—when had he fallen asleep? “He’s everything to me,” she said, and I believed her.

“You’re a great mother.” Ethan echoed my thoughts. “Don’t worry, Sis. You’ll figure it out. And you always have me and Vinnie to turn to.”

And me.” That from Uncle Benny.

Our declarations produced a small smile from Sarah. “I know. I’m so lucky to have all you guys in our lives. And Mom and Dad. Don’t know what I’d do without you.”

“You’ll never have to find out,” Ethan vowed. And I had no doubt of his sincerity.

Before long, we crossed over the Virginia state line, into Tennessee, heading west on Highway 40. We passed through some road construction in Knoxville, but before too long we’d left that in our rearview mirror and were headed toward Chattanooga, only fifty miles away.

The first time I saw the road sign proclaiming the distance to said Chattanooga, I turned a mischievous glance toward Ethan, whose eyes twinkled back at me, even as I sang the inevitable words. “Pardon me, boy…”

He quickly joined me in the lyrics, and Benny caught up by the chorus.

“…is that the Chattanooga choo choo?”

Sarah chortled and obliged us with matching train sounds, such a the choo choo and the chug-a-chug.  Alex laughed at his mother’s antics, and for the next few miles, the car was filled with the sounds of the old Glen Miller tune.
