My thoughts for today
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me.
I believe that there are too many people in this world who will not speak out against injustice, unless it directly concerns them. People who'd rather stay safe than lend a hand. Who are afraid that if they speak up, they will either be noticed, or perhaps not liked. So they stay quiet, and innocent people suffer.
Life is not a popularity contest. Those who are popular today will be replaced by others tomorrow, and so on and so on. Life is about survival. But not at someone else's expense. We all live on this planet, we should all help one another.
People with the most should help more. Everyone should help themselves, but they should also help others. Too many people are fixated on things they shouldn't be fixated on. Why are you so concerned with gay people getting married? It doesn't affect you. You say that gay marriage stains the glory of marriage, tarnishes it, and disrespects it. With the divorce rate as high as it is, those statements are utterly ridiculous. Not to mention that the straights have done a pretty good job of staining the so-called sanctity of marriage themselves in many ways. If it can be thought of, they've done it. The ABC's of marriage offenses: adultery, bigamy, cruelty... and so on and so forth.
Why do these people who denounce gay marriage so vehemently care so much about what goes on in their neighbors' bedrooms? It's no one's business. Get over yourselves.
Multiple wrongs do not make a right. It's not always easy to stick up for what you believe in. It's not always popular. But it's always right.
I know what some will say - but I'm scared. I'm just one person. They'll hurt me. I'm afraid.
Look inside yourself. You'll be surprised what strength lies there. There is strength in numbers. Have faith in yourself, and your ability to help other people. Make love, not war.
Life isn't easy, I know. No one promised it would be. But the alternative isn't exactly palatable either. So what do you do? Live every day as if it might be your last, cause one day it will. Treat everyone around you the way in which you wish to be treated yourself. Help those less fortunate - there are people a lot worse off than you. And try every day to be the best that you can be.
Most of all, love. Everyone. As much as you can. Don't be the last one standing, with no one left to speak up for you.
