Responses to Interview Questions from Claudine Kapel, author of A Darker Rain
For Full Moon Dreaming

1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?

I’d pick Siddhartha Gautama and a satellite phone. The phone would get us rescued, and we could have some fascinating discussions about the origins of Buddhism while waiting for help to arrive.

2)      Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?

I’d be Alice from Alice in Wonderland, because life really is an incredible journey! I’ve also known a few interesting cats.

3)      Take these three words and give me a 100-word or less scenario using them: insurance, owed, talk

Scenario: It’s 1965. Julia is talking to her niece, who is afraid to tell her boyfriend what she thinks about civil rights because she doesn’t want to jeopardize the relationship. Julia says:

Don’t be afraid to talk about how you feel. You don’t owe anyone your compliance and you’re not owed that by others. Being yourself is the best insurance you’ll find for a joy-filled life.

4)      What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?

For me, some elements for a romantic evening would include a delightful meal, some beautiful music, and a moonlight walk along a warm sandy beach, bare feet kissed by the lapping water.

5)      When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?

I generally start with a scene that is central to the plot. This may be the opening scene of the book, but sometimes it’s a scene that occurs much later. From there, I map out the rest of the plot as well as the related characters.

6)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?
A friend of mine suggested Lena Dunham. Alternatively, perhaps Jennifer Lawrence. They’re both (a-hem) a tad younger, and perhaps a tad taller, but it could work.

7)      Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?

I don’t really read horror novels or watch horror films, so I don’t have a big inventory of possibilities to choose from. That said, I think I’d go with Dracula, because few historical characters have sparked the imagination of writers over time the way he has.

8)      Do you have a historical crush and if so, who is it?

I’ll go with Marco Polo, who not only engaged in an epic journey of exploration, but also wrote about his travels so others could learn from them.

9)      Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?
Not really. I wasn’t sure the world was ready for a story about aliens on Earth, but I wrote it anyway. J

BLURB:

“It’s definitely not a good time to be going into the woods of Hawkley Ridge.”

When a red-eyed wildcat starts threatening ranchers in the Pacific Northwest, Ryan Cole recognizes the danger is far more menacing than the ranchers realize. Cole specializes in tackling unconventional security threats, particularly those with alien origins.

His investigation puts him in the crosshairs of Antoine Drake, an international arms dealer with a penchant for weapons from other worlds. Both men are hot on the trail of powerful alien artifacts known as guardian stones.

Cole and his team of investigators embark on a dangerous quest to recover the guardian stones before they can be assembled into the ultimate alien weapon. To succeed, Cole must also decipher the wildcat’s deadly secrets.

But in the woods of Hawkley Ridge, it’s easy for the hunter to become the prey.

A Darker Rain is the first book in the Ryan Cole series.

EXCERPT:

Suddenly Cole stopped, raising his hand to halt Dalton’s progress. He heard something. It sounded like a growl, off to the left of the path. The forest became deathly quiet. The night creatures were also aware of the danger in their midst.

Cole reached for his gun. He sensed Dalton doing the same. The cool metal in his hand was reassuring, although he couldn’t forget what the leopard had done to Scofield.

Then he saw the shadowy figure, maybe twenty yards away. Red eyes watching him in the darkness, but well shielded by the forest.

Cole remained still, pondering his options. Memories of countless military operations that had unfolded in forests and jungles flickered through his mind. He had faced many opposing forces in his life, but never anything quite like this.

Cole knew they weren’t in a position to get a good shot, not with trees and brush in the way. He hoped the leopard’s options were equally limited. The animal was large as far as wildcats went, so it was unlikely it could advance through the brush with ease.

Suddenly the red eyes were gone. Within moments, sounds of life returned to the forest.

Cole heard Dalton exhale.

“What the hell was that?” asked Dalton in a whisper.

“A genetic nightmare on four legs,” replied Cole.

Tease Me Thursday #26: Don't Look Back (Sunday edition)

Sorry this is so late. As you know, my computer died on Monday, and I was offline most of the week, only now getting caught up. I apologize at how late this is. Next week has to be better, right?

Tease Me Thursday is where authors showcase WIPs or published works, a little something to tease your reading appetite before the weekend comes!

Don't Look Back is  my ongoing flash story that I write for the Wednesday Briefs. In this scene, Marshall and Lee are out for the evening, along with their friend Roy, when a stranger approaches the table and hits on Marshall, wanting him to dance. I think this is a great glimpse into Marshall and Lee's relationship. Enjoy!

He and Lee had an agreement—Marshall was free to dance with anyone, provided he received permission. And with the strict understanding nothing else would occur, there or anywhere else. Not that Marshall wanted anything or anyone else, but those were the rules, and he followed them. It wasn’t that Lee couldn’t keep up with Marshall. It was more a matter of giving Marshall his own space, Lee called it. A question of trust.

Marshall automatically glanced at Lee.

“With your father’s permission, of course,” the man added.

Marshall snickered, just before Lee pulled him close and laid a liplock on him that took his breath away.

Wednesday Briefs: Don't Look Back #12 (3.2)

You're probably thinking I'm crazy, it's not Wednesday, it's Friday, and you're right it is. You're also probably thinking I'm late with this post, and I am that too. But my computer died Monday night, and I ended up getting a new one - well, a new used one - and didn't get back online until tonight. And I lost a lot of my writing on my old computer. I'm hoping my son can help me retrieve it.

Nonetheless, I am going to post this or else.  As you'll recall from last week, Marshall and Lee and Roy are having a night out at Partners, and some blond himbo is coming on to Lee pretty strong. See what happens in this week's chapter. And don't forget to visit the other Briefers!

Don't Look Back #12 (3.2)

By the time Lee released him, Marshall’s breath was coming in heavy gasps and his head was spinning—and the wannabe dance partner had disappeared. Guess he could catch a clue. Marshall didn’t mind. There were plenty more where he came from. Including the sexy man who’d just kissed him stupid.

“Wanna dance, cowboy?” Lee asked in a sultry voice.

Marshall broke into a wide grin. “Hot damn, you know it!”

“Then don’t you think you should get up? I don’t see that dance floor moving up here anytime soon.”
Warmth spread through Marshall’s cheeks, and he heard Roy snicker. But he didn’t mind. There wasn’t anything but love behind those words. Love and a bit of fun.

He waited for Lee to rise before leaping to his feet. Putting his hands on Marshall’s hips, Lee said, “C’mon, let’s show ‘em how it’s done.” To Roy, he added, “If that pretty boy gets back with the drinks, can you pick up the first round? I’ll catch the next.”

“You got it, Lee.”

“Then let’s go.” He swatted Marshall’s ass for good measure, and they sashayed their way down onto the dance floor. They found themselves a bit of space on the edge of the floor and began to dance, bumping hips in a slow sensual grind to the rhythm that pulsed around them.  They fit r like a hand in a glove, sliding together naturally, like they’d just come off an episode of ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ Lee guided Marshall with expertise, and he knew how to lift and spin Marshall, making it appear effortless.

Little by little the space around them grew as people stopped to watch and admire.  The two men paid them no heed, focused on one another, until the music stopped, when Lee bent Marshall over nearly backward and kissed him. They came upright to thunderous applause. Marshall couldn’t help but notice a few people had their phones out. Taking pictures, no doubt.

“You did good, boy,” Lee praised him, and Marshall warmed to his words.

Just then the music changed, and the dancers re-arranged themselves into lines. The boys engaged insomegood ole scooting and booting before finally leaving the dance floor for the table. The drinks had arrived while they were gone. They slid back into their places, dropped the shots into the beers and drank.

“That server sure seemed disappointed you weren’t here,” Roy teased. “Kept asking about you. Wanted to know if you were taken.”

“What did you tell him?” Marshall asked.

Roy shrugged. “Said if he wanted to know so bad, he should ask Lee.”

Marshall kicked him underneath the table, and Roy laughed.

Lee leaned over and pinched Marshall’s cheek between thumb and finger. “Aw, what’s the matter, sweetums, feelin’ a mite jealous?”

“No, of course not. I just thought he was trashy, that’s all.”

That produced more guffaws from Lee and Roy.

“I’m not jealous!” Marshall protested.

Lee clapped him on the back and grinned. “Oh no, not much you aren’t!”

Blondie chose that moment to walk up to the table, producing more hoots of laughter from Lee and Roy, and little enthusiasm from Marshall. The server tossed his long hair back, away from his face, and batted his eyes straight at Lee, ignoring Marshall’s presence entirely. So much so, he stepped on Marshall’s foot in his eagerness to get to Lee.

“Goddammit, those are new boots!” Marshall spluttered.  The server paid him no heed and leaned around him, his attention all on Lee.

“Can I get you something else, sugah?” There was no mistaking what the blond was offering. And it wasn’t liquid refreshment. At least, nothing that came from the bar.

It took all of Marshall’s self-control not to lean his chair back onto two legs and block the server’s way, but he didn’t do it.

“Yes, you can.” Lee’s voice was deceptively calm. Marshall recognized the don’t-fuck-with-me undertones. He returned his chair to its original position and kept quiet.

“What can I get you, handsome?”

“Some respect for my partner,” Lee replied. “And an apology for stepping on his foot.” Lee slid an arm about Marshall’s shoulders, his message clear.

Marshall felt his heart expand a hundredfold, and he reveled in the security and love that was Lee.  He looked up at Blondie, who’d thrust out his lower lip into a pout, undoubtedly hoping to gain sympathy from Lee. Marshall could have told him he was barking up the wrong tree there.
Lee cleared his throat with purpose. Blondie backed up a pace.

“I... I’m sorry,” he muttered in a voice that barely carried over the music. Marshall glanced at Lee, who nodded.

“Apology accepted. And can we have another round of the same, please?” Marshall said.

“Yes, sir. Right away.” Marshall thought if Blondie were wearing a skirt, he would’ve curtsied. Instead he simply turned and shuffled toward the bar, a whole lot less sass in his step, and a whole lot more contrite.

“You see? Anyone can be trained, if you know how to do it right.” Lee reached for his beer with his free hand, a twinkle in his eye as he observed Marshall over the rim of the glass.

“Is that so? I’m guessing you mean me?” Marshall couldn’t help but stare into Lee’s dark blue eyes. He tried not to smile, but he wasn’t that good at dissembling, tending to wear his heart on his sleeve. When it came to Lee, anyway.

“Well, he sure doesn’t mean me.” Roy snorted.

They all laughed at that, and any lingering tension dissipated. The chastened server returned with their drinks, and a sunnier disposition.

“You know what, I think I see a pretty little filly that needs some attention. I’ll catch up with you.” Roy rose, took his beer and disappeared into the crowd, leaving Lee and Marshall alone.

“Hey, Lee, long time no see!”

Another country heard from. Lee turned toward the newcomer.

Excerpt:
Anthony walked down the hall. He reached the bedroom and gently pushed the door open. He saw Flynn framed in the light of the lamp shining from the lounge. He lay, apparently asleep, on the leather and wood divan Anthony had brought over from Italy. Its dark burgundy colour contrasted with what Flynn wore, which was nothing but a black thong lying stark against his pale skin. The divan was under the window. The bed covers were rumpled, as if Flynn had been sleeping. His robe was draped across the foot of the bed. Anthony moved towards the gleaming body of his supine lover.
Flynn’s face was turned away towards the back of the sofa. His dark hair was tousled and his arms stretched above his head to the right. He wore a blindfold. Anthony felt a stir in his groin seeing those lean, hairy legs stretched out wantonly, inviting him to run his hands up and over his groin. Even appearing asleep, Flynn had the power to excite him, to make Anthony hard and ready. He stepped towards him, watching the rise and fall of Flynn’s chest with their already hardened nubs. Anthony wanted to run his tongue over that chest, with its smattering of fine hair, to take Flynn’s nipples in his mouth and suck them until Flynn groaned in pleasure. As he got closer in the dim light he saw the hands with their bonds of silk. Green bonds lay dark against Flynn’s wrists, fastened to the wooden struts of the upright chair arm. His hands were tight fists. Anthony chuckled softly, a noise that sounded loud in the stillness of the room.
“Been waiting long?’ he whispered as he took off his jacket. ‘I tried to get home as soon as I could.”
Anthony knew the bonds would be loose so Flynn could break free if needed but he also knew he wouldn’t. It was the way the game was played.

Capture (The Enforcer's Series #4) Review

Capture (Enforcer’s Series #4)

Author: Ravon Silvius
Publisher: eXtasy Books
American release date: February 15, 2014
Format/Genre/Length: E-book/M/M Steampunk Romance/175 pages
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★

Kenneth and Thorn have been summoned to Arktaine to give their testimony before the council and turn over their prisoner, Marle, who has remained obstinately silent. Thorn is concerned that his words will be regarded less than Kenneth’s and, indeed, they spend far less time questioning him and do not wish to hear all he has to say. Why is the Circle of Ten even present at this hearing?

Kenneth tries to smooth things over, but there is just so much he can do. And when the sentence is given, it’s really a joke, and leaves a bad taste in both their mouths.

At loose ends until they are given a new assignment, they realize they can investigate on their own. And they are not satisfied with how things stand. So they start to poke their noses into places other people think they do not belong, and the unthinkable occurs when Kenneth is captured. Now Thorn must fight to rescue his lover, having no idea where’s he been taken or by whom—and  he can’t trust anyone. Kenneth’s life hangs in the balance, and Thorn is terrified he might actually lose the man he loves.

This is quite an intense addition to this series, as Thorn strives to rescue his captured lover. There is a great deal of development and realizations in this book. We watch Kenneth struggle with things he’s never had to deal with before. His eyes are opened to many things, and they aren’t pleasant. We watch Thorn grow and blossom, as their relationship grows even stronger as they adjust even more to one another, increasing their already tight fit. We also see that magic doesn’t necessarily equate to power, neither does lack of it equate to helplessness.

I am so totally in love with this series and these characters. As long as the author keeps writing them, I’ll keep reading them. This is a great series if you enjoy steampunk and magic, and fighting against all odds to achieve your dreams. But most of all, this is for people who believe in the power of love.

Can’t wait for the next volume, hope it comes out soon.

Guest Blogger: Chris T. Kat

Please welcome my dear friend and fellow author Chris T. Kat, who is here to talk about her newest release,
Secret Energy. It's the sequel to her wonderful Secret Chemistry. Personally, I can't wait to read it. Make yourself at home, Chris, while I get us something to drink.

Shape-shifters: What draws us to them?
Julie, thank you very much for the opportunity to be a guest on your blog. Dreamspinner Press  published my new release, Secret Energy, on August 29th. Secret Energy is a shape-shifter story, and the sequel to Secret Chemistry (http://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=3520).
Secret Energy is my 12th book (plus one short story in an anthology), and it's my fourth shape-shifter story. In most of my stories, animals play an important role, or the book is set in a fantasy / paranormal world.
Shape-shifting is the ability to physically transform from one form into another. Often it's a human being who can shift into some kind of animal. The shift is usually achieved through the application of magic, divine intervention, or because the human is a mythological creature that inherits the ability to transform.
Some shape-shifter forms are more used than others—for example wolves and dragons—while others don't receive a lot of attention. I like to write unusual shifters, like I did in The Wolf and His Diva, where one of the guys can shift into a red squirrel. :)
In Secret Energy, the characters are wolf-shifters and / or hybrids between wolves and other animals. Now why do these stories attract me so much?

ñ  The idea of experiencing the world through the eyes of an animal appeals to me. The sights and smells must be overwhelming.
ñ  Wolves are attractive because they have a strict hierarchy. Everyone knows their place—which doesn't mean there are no fights—and everyone is responsible for the well-being of the whole pack.
ñ  The idea of a person that might be disabled or sees himself as weak, changes form and become a dangerous predator, sounds great to me. It allows that person to explore a whole different side of their personality.
ñ  How about the possibility of a gender switch? A woman could turn into a male wolf or a man could turn into a female fox. Wouldn't that make for some awesome moments in the book?
ñ  Maybe the shape-shifters have other magical abilities, to which they only have access while in their animal form.

As you can see, there are no limitations for your imagination, and that's what really draws me to this genre. How about you? What appeals to you? What are your criteria to pick up a shape-shifter story?

Blurb:
When wolf shifter Robin agreed to cover for his older brother Tim and Tim’s lover Jay, he never imagined feeling so stifled. Tim's overprotective attitude suffocates him. Pressure from within—the urge to find his own mate—mounts daily. With a little help from Jay, Robin finally convinces Tim to let him go for a run alone, but he has no inkling that his life will change forever as a result.
Unexpectedly, he finds his mate Peter Brannigan, an old and special soul, and the one shifter who can bring balance to Robin’s life. The new couple spend days together, developing their bond as mates. Yet even as they explore and cement their relationship, crisis looms just ahead when an old enemy of the pack shows up and kills someone Robin loves.

Excerpt:
The scent called to Robin, setting something free within him—something unfamiliar and primal in nature. Robin’s mood alternated between exhilarated and scared, the combination and sheer intensity of both feelings troubling him.
Robin stopped near a small creek and carefully stepped inside the stream, the cool water soothing his paws and ankles. He took a few swallows of the clear water while his heartbeat slowed down.
The scent was strong around the creek, but Robin was unable to pinpoint it. After raising his snout high in the air, he inhaled the smell deeply, hoping it would infuse his lungs and from there spread to every part of his body, because whatever it was, it had a highly arousing but also calming effect on him. A long, high-pitched yowl broke free from his throat, announcing his longing.
Robin waited before he swept his gaze around. High pines surrounded the small creek, casting shadows on the water’s surface. The creek flowed slowly and smoothly, only occasionally hindered by rocks strewn in its bed. The water swirled around them, creating small vortices that gurgled.
Would anyone answer his plea? What would he do if someone did? Why was he even expecting someone to answer? It couldn’t be his mate—it just couldn’t—although everything would make sense, then.
No one answered Robin. In fact, he couldn’t even hear the usual cacophony of animal noises, just the water lapping at his feet. Robin pricked his ears, concentrating hard on what he could hear—the purling of the creek, the wind whipping through the treetops, and sometimes branches creaking. His breathing sounded harsh, closer to panting. Something wasn’t right, not at all.
Robin walked over to the other side of the stream, the earlier exhilaration dwindling. He shifted from foot to foot, darting his gaze around. An uncomfortable sense of isolation nestled into his insides. Maybe he should have listened to Tim after all?
Shivering, he stood there, not sure whether he wanted to go on with his search or go back to Tim, Jay, and Walter. Going back meant safety, whereas going after his potential mate—or whatever it was he was following—could mean anything.
Robin tucked his tail between his hind legs. He had never heard of a wolf being afraid of his mate. Wouldn’t that mean the scent didn’t belong to his mate? Or maybe his mate was nuts and he somehow recognized it? Whatever the scent was—or to whomever it belonged—it didn’t smell like a wolf.
What if his mate was female?  How would that work? He had never been into girls. He liked them as friends, but any kind of advances had him running for the hills. Robin was gay, period. No, the scent had to belong to a male wolf.
No, wait. He’d already ruled out another wolf.
The darkness settling around him didn’t help the queasy feeling in his stomach. Whichever direction he turned his head, something moved in the shadows, leaving him vulnerable and scared. The moon remained partially hidden behind the clouds, but even if the sky had been clear, the moonlight wouldn’t have been able to illuminate the forest ground properly. Or at least not in a way Robin wanted.
Suddenly he started. The moon? Oh hell! Shouldn’t he have been back hours ago? Surely Tim was already looking for him. Why hadn’t he realized hours had passed? Had his wolf taken over without him noticing? His father obviously had a point with not wanting Robin to go anywhere alone in his wolf form.
Robin threw his head back and closed his eyes before he howled at the moon, the sound of his voice echoing through the forest, silencing every other animal in his vicinity. This time someone answered him. Robin jumped at the sound of a roar at the other side of the creek.
The roar didn’t sound like a wolf; it was too guttural for that. After his initial jump, Robin stood frozen, shock waves rolling through his entire body.

Super Book Blast: Silent Partner

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Stan will be awarding a $25 Amazon GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Silent Partner is a paranormal mystery, a police procedure novel with a female detective that will remind you of Harry Bosch, a ghost story that suggests what lies beyond death, and a comic look at a tabloid where the “truth” is whatever sells.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Frankie glared at Landry. His neck turned red, but he didn’t say anything.

“How could I live without her? I was addicted to her. Once you had her in your system, you never wanted her to leave. When I was away from her, I thought of her constantly. It wasn’t just the sex. She was the smartest, wittiest woman I’ve ever known. She was the most interesting and exciting woman I’ve ever met. She was also the most manipulative woman I’ve ever met. I hated myself for not throwing her out, but I just couldn’t. Love is a horrible thing, and not the wonderful things poets say.”

“Did she leave a note?” Frankie was trying to develop a timeline.
