Guest Blogger: Taylin Clavelli

Please welcome my friend and fellow author Taylin Clavelli, here to talk about her new release,
Dakota Skies! Taylin, make yourself at home, I'll rustle us up something to drink. You go ahead and start with the questions!

The Questions
1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?

My husband and an axe. The reason being, my husband has enough brains and the skill to make something out of nothing, keep his cool, and get us off the island. An axe because it can be used to cut and dig with or if necessary, make someone into fish bait if they become iritating.

   2)    Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?

I wouldn’t say one musical gets anywhere close. It’s more a case of Calamity Jane meets Hairspray.  I’m a bit of a tomboy, but I have been known to rebel against what is expected of me. I have also been known to scrub up and wear a dress occasionally too.

3)      Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scene using them:  turf, guarantee, reject.

Danny had no intention of being a reject jockey. That being said, his diminutive size was no guarantee of his success in the trials. One had to have the ability to get the best out of a horse while being the least burden.  This race was his test. The chestnut mare pawed the turf, anxious to get going. As the white flag went up all the inside the stalls went into heightened alert, then, the gates opened… and they were off….

4)      You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why?
Thranduil from The Hobbit. Damn, the man is gorgeous and tall. The years of experience the
king must have would, I hope, make him awesome in bed. I’ve also seen how the actor who plays Thranduil has kissed his co-stars in other movies and I sooooo want to be on the other end of that. Not that it matters when you’re horizontal, but, I am 5’9 and I hated it when a boyfriend was smaller than me.

JLH: omg, I love Lee Pace too! He's awesome in Halt and Catch Fire!

5)      What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?

We have a takeaway and curl up on the sofa with a movie.

6)      When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
If I had to say one or the other it would be plot. However, the more I think about it, it is neither. To begin with, I have an image in my head; for example - a washed up body, a church, or a gnarled tree.  The image can come about by something I’ve seen, a dream I’ve had or a song I’ve heard.  That image then develops into a scene showing why or how that image appeared, and the plot begins. Once I start writing, the character develops. The personality of the character comes first before the physical attributes.

7)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?

Glenn Close. I think she is sufficiently wacky. She is a handsome woman, but not a classic beauty. I scrub up okay, but I ain’t no Miss World by any stretch of the imagination. I wish I had her figure though. I used to be thin once, and I can dream in a movie. If not her, then it would be Julie Walters. There hasn’t been a movie the lady made that I haven’t liked, and I love the depth, humor, and fire she brings to her characters. I loved the moment in Harry Potter where she said “That’s my daughter, you bitch.”

     8)    Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?

I try not to watch horror - it gives me nightmares, so I can’t say I have a favorite. As a child I used to
check under my bed before getting into it anyway or jump onto it from a few feet away. But, the one actor who springs to mind whenever the word horror is mentioned has to be Peter Cushing. I know it gives my age away, but to me no one, modern actor or old Hollywood has ever surpassed him in that genre.

JLH: Another favorite of mine! You have great taste, woman!  :)

9)      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?

Robin Hood. I love history and I’ve seen many people play the man from Douglas Fairbanks to Russell Crowe. I’ve even been to Nottingham Forest for the official tour.

10)   Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?

If there was it would be dangerous to tell you at the moment.

Blurb:

Born in the wrong time...

In 1875 Dakota, Sheriff Jamie Carter has to hide his interest in men, even from his gutsy twin sister, Anna. On a good day, the truth can mean a bullet between the eyes, and on a bad, one in the back.

A man on a mission...

Jamie leaves Anna in charge of Blackrock and he hits the bounty hunting trail, along with his faithful equine companion, Houston. Five territories, scores of ‘Wanted’ posters, and many bullets later, his path unexpectedly converges with that of enigmatic loner, Kit Brooks.

Two men with one soul...

Will the smoldering fire between them rage into an inferno and break down protective barriers, allowing them to find love? Or will it separate and kill them?

Beneath Dakota skies...

Jamie and Kit’s story is a sweeping saga of cowboys, Indians, persistent broads, and vengeful villains, where the cowboys aren’t always the good guys, and love can’t be taken for granted.

Excerpt:

“Who’s there?” he barked into the dark.
Jay wasn’t happy at being denied sleep again. There was no answer, and the laughing abruptly stopped. All Jay could hear was the wind rustling the small new leaves on the trees. Eventually sleep took him, albeit restlessly.
Moving out in the morning, he followed the trail north. However, the farther he traveled, the more he couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched.
That evening, Jay set up camp not far from water. It allowed him to replenish his canteen (after boiling it, of course, like his mama taught him) and take a dip. The stream ran deeper, wider, and faster than at other places he’d seen. It was perfect for a bath and rough shave.
Dust, grease, and grime from the last few days scoured his skin. Even though the water was bone chillingly cold, soap and tough scrubbing removed the filth. The freshness it brought made him feel much better. After drying off, Jay returned to camp with a spring in his step.
The closer Jay got to his warming fire… the more he heard voices.
Hiding behind a tall bush, Jay withdrew his gun and… very… slowly… cocked it ready.
Natives were going through his stuff.
His breathing shallow, Jay raised his arm to take aim. At that moment, a weathered hand softly covered his mouth. Jay froze. The man’s other hand carefully and silently lowered his gun. None of the movements were threatening. Though Jay’s heart was pumping so hard he thought it wanted out of his chest.
“Don’t,” was whispered into his ear. “They’re curious. They’ll go soon.”
Jay nodded in compliance, but the stranger’s hold on him didn’t falter. The arm that lowered his gun was around his waist, along with his gun. The man was ensuring Jay didn’t move. His soft, quiet breathing ghosted over the side of Jay’s face. Warmth from the strong stranger permeated every pore of Jay Carter’s cold body like a sleep-inducing fog.
Within minutes the natives left, leaving almost no evidence of their visit, except for a missing sack of grain.
The man continued to whisper, “They’ve been following you since you entered their land. They’re Wichita, and they mean you no harm. If you shoot your gun, it’ll alert every tribesman to your existence. Be careful. Be quiet. Don’t do anything stupid… like sing.”
The sweet scent of honey wafted into Jay’s nose. His body was invaded—not physically, but sensually. Jay had to close his eyes to steady himself.
As if by magic, the stranger’s hold on Jay was gone, leaving cold air in its wake. Instead of being relieved, Jay missed the heat from the man’s broad chest against his back, and the strong arms wrapped around him. It was comfortable, safe… and unnerving.

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY
TAYLIN CLAVELLI
I live in the United Kingdom, south of Birmingham. I am married with children and love my family with all my heart.
My love of books has been a long standing affair, liking nothing better than to lose myself in an imaginary world.
Until I met Lily Velden, I never considered trying my hand at writing. However, after talking ideas, Lily encouraged me to put pen to paper—or rather, fingers to keyboard. Since, with a few virtual kicks in the right place, I haven’t stopped. My increased confidence eventually led to me writing an original work for submission.
My first published work was Boys, Toys and Carpet Fitters, developed for Dreamspinners Press Anthology – Don’t Try This At Home. Since then I have had 3 other stories published by Wayward Ink Publishing – DIY Delights, Invisible, and Sleepwalking. More are on their way.
Now I absolutely adore immersing myself into the characters I create, and transferring the pictures in my brain to paper, finding it liberating, therapeutic, and wonderful.
Outside of writing, my interests include; martial arts, horse-riding, and movies, all of which facilitate my love of a variety of genre movies. My action heroes include; Jet Li and Tony Jaa— the dedication these men have for their art combined with their skill is both amazing and a privilege to watch. I also believe the screen entrance of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean – Curse of the Black Pearl, and Shadowfax in LOTR, to be the greatest screen entrances ever. My all-time favorite movies are Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.
The simple things in life that make my day, putting a smile on my face are:-
Laughter - especially that of my children.
The smell of lasagna cooking – it makes my mouth salivate.
The dawn chorus – no symphony ever written can beat the waking greetings of the birds.

Guest Blogger Killarney Sheffield

Blurb:  Marie Antoinette. Beheaded in the prime of her life. What if her fate was changed? What if she escaped that night the castle was stormed? What if she was mistaken for a common woman? What if she found herself aboard a convict ship bound for Australia? What if she had a second chance at life and love?

Excerpt:  Fear slid its icy fingers up her breastbone and took hold of her heart. How long would a mere dozen guards hold the unruly mob outside before they were overpowered? “Has my brother in Austria not sent word of his protection yet?” Marie held up her arms so Adele could slip the nightdress over her head.
"No, Your Highness. I fear the missive you sent him was waylaid or deliberately not delivered.”
There is no help coming. What am I to do? It has been whispered all about the palace for weeks the commoners are calling for our heads. Her hands trembled with distress. Is there no hope? I do not want to die. I have many years left to live. Desperate tears trickled down her cheeks. Oh why did my father give my hand to the French heir to the throne those many years ago? I gave up my home in Austria, my precious pet dog, my family and friends to forge a bond between my country and the prince's. It has all been for naught thanks to my husband, now the King of France for only a few short years since his father's passing. Wastrel. Simple minded wastrel.
Anger hardened her emotions and she swiped away the tears. It is not fair. I could have ruled better, however even the Queen of France has less authority than a common woman. Damn my husband. Her hand came to rest upon her still flat belly. Will the commoners really behead me when I am with child? Would they be so cruel and heartless to kill an unborn innocent babe?

Wednesday Briefs: Trapped in Time #5

Happy Hump day one and all! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for another Wednesday Brief! Today our prompt is: "Is that what you think of me?" and the alternative prompts are:  Use: thyme, energy, railroad, or "You have trust issues, mister!" or use: blue, turkey, field, or mention any constellation in your story.

Last week, as you'll recall, in Trapped in Time, Myron fell into the quicksand. Will Doll and Vittorio save him? Inquiring minds want to know! And don't forget to check out all the Wednesday Briefers, their links follow my story. Enjoy!

Trapped in Time #5

Myron is a soggy and pathetic mess lying upon the ground at our feet; he resembles the refuse one might find at the bottom of an outhouse. And smells almost as bad.

“Enough is enough, Myron,” Vittorio says in a gentle, but firm, voice. “You’ve had your fun, now let’s all go home.”

“B-but… but… V-Vittorio…” Myron’s voice shakes, and his lower lips trembles—what there is of it—and I do believe he’s begun to cry, the streaks of tears clearing a path in the grime upon his face. How he got dirt upon his cheeks is beyond me; I guess he rubbed them with his filthy hands.

I gaze at my own hand, suddenly curious as to how clean it is; a long thin red line bisects it, which is growing broader as I gaze, bright scarlet drops turning into a tiny rivulet that begins to sting. I can only pray that there is nothing inside that plant that can cause infection.

“Doll!” Vittorio clucks, turning his attention upon me and my slight injury. Although I assure him that I am fine, he takes my hand and bathes it with his tongue, cleansing it as best as he can under the circumstances. The cut is not very deep, and I am very appreciative of his efforts on my behalf. By the time we again remember Myron, we realize the rat is crawling away from us.

Vittorio may be the nicest person I know, but he also does not tolerate a fool lightly. As if he can read Myron’s tiny mind, he kisses me softly. “Be right back,” he murmurs, disappearing in the direction of where Myron originally appeared in the treetops. He must be on the right track, as the weasel begins to scream, crawling faster in the same direction.

“It’s mine, it’s mine, it’s mine!”

Tired of listening to his damnable caterwauling, and knowing Vittorio cannot see me or remonstrate with me, I launch a surreptitious kick at Myron’s middle, and he abates at last, curling up into a loathsome, foul-smelling ball.  I regret the action immediately, as it has befouled my shoe in the process.

Where is clean water when you need it?

Vittorio returns, a triumphant look upon his handsome face. In his hand, he holds what appears to be a piece of wood. Myron immediately launches himself at my Vittorio.

“That is mine! Give it to me now!” I guess he’s forgotten that he’s in love with my Vittorio. At least at the moment. Good.

Vittorio sidesteps him, rather handily if I do say so myself, and Myron ends up face down in the dirt.

“I know it is yours,” Vittorio says, as if he is talking to a particularly stupid child. Which he is. “This is what you used to bring us here, is it not?”

Myron rolls onto his back, and heaves himself up onto his elbows, his face a striped mask where the tears have cleansed away the mud. “Yes,” he replies sullenly, “but it wasn’t meant to… it was a mistake… only you and I…”

Aha! He is admitting what I have long suspected, that he is after my love. “What did you think, that you would kidnap Vittorio and take him to some other time and that would make him love you?” My sneer is evident in my voice. “But why this point in time?” I ask. “I do not understand what you were thinking.” Well, he wasn’t thinking, that much is clear.

“Is that what you think of me?” he asks indignantly.

“It is what I think too,” Vittorio adds. “I’d like to know the same thing. You do not seem to understand. It is Doll I love and only Doll. I would not love you, not ever, but especially under those circumstances. I am sorry, Myron.”
I’m not, and I feel  very vindicated and very triumphant! I reach for my Vittorio and we do an impromptu victory polka. He leads, of course.

Once we finish reeling about, we catch our breath and turn to collectively face down Myron, who seems to have shrunk inside of his nasty clothes.

“But I love you, Vittorio,” he protests in a very small voice, as if the words are a mantra that can protect him from harm. In the old country, there is a man who would take someone such as Myron and have a long talk with him, to understand why his mind is so… what is the word? I cannot think. Why he is so verrückt. Crazy. I believe his name is Freud.

“I am sorry,” Vittorio repeats, as he slides his arm about my waist, and draws me closer to him. “Can we go home now?”

Myron throws himself upon the ground. Well, technically, he was already there. He begins to thrash about and flail; if he were younger, I’d say he is having a temper tantrum. I shall say it anyway. He is being a spoiled brat, and he needs to be disciplined as such. But I’ll be damned if I’m going to touch him, and neither will Vittorio.
I turn to my love. “I was thinking…”

“Si, my love?”

“If there are animals here, there must be water, yes?”

“Yes, I think there should be. Are you thinking what I’m thinking, my clever Doll?”

I grin at him, reaching up and sweeping my fingers along his jaw. “Ja. Bath time, my sweet baby. You and me, ja?”

“You and me, ja,” he agrees, kissing my fingertips, sending a tingle down the length of my spine. We start to walk away; Myron screams louder.

“You can’t leave me, you can’t leave me, you can’t… I’ll hold my breath until I turn blue!” he threatens.

“Please do,” I tell him. “You will find that you will pass out before you die.”

He beings to wail again, an annoying siren sound that is suddenly and mysteriously cut short. Vittorio and I look at one another, then back at Myron.

to be continued

The Conqueror's Chalice Review

The Conqueror’s Chalice
Author: Souya Himaware
Publisher: Digital Manga Publishing
American release date: February 29, 2012
Format/Genre/Length: Manga/Yaoi/219 pages
Publisher/Industry Age Rating: Older Teen, 16+
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★

Prince Masoo and his brother Aoto are the eleventh and twelfth children of their father, the king, and as such not likely to advance inside their own country, having too many siblings ahead of them. So Masoo invades the neighboring country of Tou and defeats its ruler. Afterward, all of the defeated king’s wives and children commit suicide rather than live under his rule—all except for one, whom Masoo saves—Prince Kisame. He takes the young boy under his wing, in an uncharacteristic move, and decides to raise him to be the best man he can be. Even if that means that when Kisame grows up, he might kill him and take back his country.

Synopsis:

Even Aoto is surprised at the relationship between Masoo and Kisame, at the way Masoo makes time for him, for he has never known his brother to be interested in, or show any concern for, a child. Masoo insists that Kisame receive the best education, and has Aoto train him in the ways of the sword, claiming he does not wish to be surrounded by fools. When Kisame wakens in the middle of the night from a bad dream, Masoo permits the child to sleep with him, even kicking out a woman he’d been bedding to make room for Kisame. He teaches him that grown men don’t cry, nothing gets solved by crying, so he must find other way to deal with his tears.

From the beginning, Kisame’s devout desire has always been to receive a cup of wine from his lord’s hand. But he has always been too young…

As Kisame matures, he becomes a very attractive young man—and although he is not of age yet, Masoo invites him to his chambers and offers him a chalice of wine. Of course Kisame accepts. Once he is under the alcohol’s influence, Masoo makes his move. He claims Kisame for his bed, telling him that now he is and shall be his toy. Thus their physical relationship begins, despite Kisame’s protestations that he does not wish it to be so. But he is helpless against Masoo’s insistence.

However, there are still forces that are determined to rid the country of its conqueror, and to see the usurped prince back upon the throne. Once that occurs, what will happen between Kisame and Masoo? Will he take revenge on the man who has treated him as a mere toy? Or does the truth lie somewhere else?

Commentary:

This was a really great story of ancient China, I absolutely loved it! Masoo is handsome and arrogant, and he is very self-centered. But there is more to him than that, and he cannot entirely be blamed for the way he is; it’s how he was raised. His relationship with his brother Aoto and with Kisame show that he is also human, a multi-layered character. Kisame does not understand him, and yet he goes to him, because he is forced to. But is that the whole truth? Or does something more lie underneath?

I could have kept reading this story if it had continued. I think  anyone that loves yaoi will enjoy this tale, and find the ending satisfactory. I enjoyed the artwork. Kisame is pretty and Masoo is very handsome. I’d like to see more from this author.

Meet Me in St. Louis!

On October 8th, my first joint venture with co-author S.L. Danielson will be released by Silver Publishing. It's entitled My Fair Vampire, and I'd like to tell you a bit about it, introduce you to the characters. If we're lucky, we might talk them into coming by the blog one day before the book releases!   Check out this awesome cover by the talented and gracious Reese Dante!

My Fair Vampire is an historical novel. It takes place in 1904, during the Louisiana Exposition, more commonly known as the St. Louis World's Fair. Here's our blurb:

In 1904, the world’s spotlight shone brightly on St. Louis, Missouri—gateway to the West and host of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. Visitors came from all points of the globe to wonder, to gape, to taste, to explore and to enjoy the marvels which the World’s Fair had to offer. An ambitious young reporter from Utah, William Deming, sees his chance to not only visit the fair, but make a name for himself by reporting on its goings on. He takes a room in a boarding house, close to the Fair itself. What he doesn’t count on is meeting Misha—a young and handsome Russian, whose aunt owns the boarding house.

Misha is something William has never encountered before—a vampire! As if that isn’t enough to accept, when a man is discovered murdered at the Fair, William has to wonder if his Misha is involved. Especially as there seems to have been a connection between the vampire and the victim. Will an old flame cause new problems for William and Misha? Will they find love at the World’s Fair? Or will theirs be doomed to be a fatal attraction?

The bulk of the action in the book takes place either at the World's Fair or at the boarding house that is owned by Misha's aunt, where the young reporter, William Deming, is staying for the duration of his assignment at the Fair. The house is situated right on Lindell, within walking distance of the fairgrounds.

It helps that both SL and I live in the St. Louis area, and that we have access to these places. Although the boardinghouse itself is fictional, the place where the fair was held very much exists, although most of the buildings are long gone, only designed to be temporary. One - the Fine Arts Building - was built more securely, as it housed a lot of expensive artwork, and became our very own St. Louis Art Museum, a very wonderful place to spend time. I've spent a lot of time there and will again.

Standing outside the museum, you can look down Art Hill to the Grand Basin, and just imagine what it must have been like - brightly lit, crowded with eager, excited fairgoers. It must have been very exciting to be there. There is a small prologue at the beginning of the book which covers the Fair's origins and how it came to be. The Olympics were held here that same year.

William sees the Fair as his big journalistic break and he's determined to shine and be noticed by his editor! He doesn't figure on meeting anyone, much less the handsome reclusive Russian, who quickly fascinates him and mystifies him both.  Let me show you the inspirations for our fellows:

This is William Deming:

And this is Misha Rumiantseva.  Yeah, that's a mouthful lol

A man is found murdered at the Fair, and everyone blames Misha for it. Can William prove his lover's    innocence? If he's innocent? Find out when you meet them at the Fair.
