Let the Howling begin!

It's that time of year again. Ghosties and ghoulies and long-legged beasties, and things that go bump in the night... and another Howloween Blog Hop! And authors that love to talk about them and give out prizes! No, not candy. Well, eye candy, maybe, but that's another story. At the end of my blog, I'll tell you what I'm offering and how you can win.

Halloween is a magical type of the year, when the line between the so-called normal world and that of the paranormal and supernatural tends to blur... unless, of course, you're one of those people who live in that other world 365 and 24/7.

I find the creatures of the night to be fascinating. Vampires and werewolves and ghosts... oh my. But let's not forget aliens and merpeople, and shifters of all sorts, and the little people and the big people, gargoyles, and so much more. Books and films, there is a veritable cornucopia out there, something to satisfy everyone's taste.

My first supernatural love is the vampire. When I was about twelve, I read Bram Stoker's Dracula, and I was hooked. I didn't even really understand the sexual tension, or the corresponding feelings it sent through me, a tingling at the base of my neck, but it was there and it was real. I watched the movie starring Bela Lugosi, and fell in love with this charming, handsome, charismatic man with the deep, rich voice.

Back at that time, there was a unique soap opera that didn't just focus on who was sleeping with who, as most of them did (and do), but dealt with supernatural goings on in the small town of Collinsport, Maine. And then I fell in love with the main character, another charming and charismatic man, Barnabas Collins, portrayed by Jonathan Frid.  Oh how I loved Barnabas! I clipped photos and articles from the magazines and taped them to my walls. And every night, I kissed him good night.

It only seemed natural that when I went to write my first original novel that there would be a vampire in it. I set the book in St. Louis (where I live), in an imaginary museum and house of horror owned by two brothers. One is engaged to a young woman who specializes in Tarot readings... and vampire lore. When the new investor, Derek Deville, arrives from Europe, she is immediately entranced by him. When people start to die, though, she has to wonder what is going on, and does this mysterious man have anything to do with it? Dark Love is that book, and it was published by Silver Publishing in January of 2011, under the name of Reinette.

There are other sexy vampires, of course. I love the old Hammer films, with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee (although I despise the Frank Langella version of Dracula). If you like a little humor with your vamps, try The Fearless Vampire Killers (made before we realized what a pervert Roman Polanski is). Another one of my favorite Dracula films not surprisingly features my favorite actor, Gary Oldman. I know, what a surprise, right? But he is the epitome of sexiness, with that long red hair, and those gorgeous eyes. Takes the sting out of being bitten, if you know what I  mean!

On TV, there are two vampires that merit mention from me, and they are both sexy as hell.  First, Mick St. John from the too short series Moonlight. He was so incredibly hot, sweet and romantic... just thinking about it makes me want to pop my DVD in and watch him! Good thing there's Hawaii 5-0, so that I can keep watching Alex O'Loughlin!

The next beautiful vamp is Damon Salvatore of Vampire Diaries, played by the gorgeous Ian Somerhalder. He's the best thing in the show, literally. If he weren't in it, I'd never watch, to be honest. I love him so much, he's also my FB avatar.  If you want to watch the hottest video ever, watch this - Damon dancing with Vicki. But feel free to ignore Vicki and concentrate on Damon, particular when he's dancing solo on the stair rail.

My next novel came as a surprise to me. I was supposed to be writing something else, but a voice in my head clamored for attention. All I knew was that he was a gay werewolf, no more. But he was insistent, and I thought okay, I'll be nice and jot down his info for now and get back to him. So I let him speak and wrote it down in longhand - and that became the first chapter of To The Max, featuring my beloved werewolf, Max Montague. Since that time, there's been a sequel, For Love of Max, and I'm working on the third book in the series.

Werewolves. There is something about them that I love. They've come a long way from the hairy man portrayed by Lon Chaney, Jr. Or even Oliver Reed's portrayal of the demented unfortunate in The Curse of the Werewolf. Although when he wasn't howling at the moon, he was rather hot.

Well, I've run off at the mouth long enough. You have blogs to visit, prizes to win. Not like I won't be back tomorrow, right?

Oh, the contest? You're right! I did mention prizes, that's the point of this, isn't it? I'm offering four prizes from my blog. Three winners will receive their choice of anything from my backlist, while one winner will get a $10 Amazon gc. What do you have to do? It's simple. Comment with something pertaining to Halloween, be it a memory, favorite creature, or sexiest beast of your dreams. Make sure you include your email address, otherwise you will not be entered in the contest. You have until midnight on Halloween to enter.

Let the commenting begin!

One Piece 5: For Whom the Bell Tolls review

One Piece, Volume 5: For Whom the Bell Tolls
Author: Eiichiro Oda
Publisher: Viz Media
American release date: November 9, 2004
Format/Genre/Length: Manga/Shonen/200 pages
Publisher/Industry Age Rating: Teen
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★

Usopp’s pirates, protecting Kaya, are chased by the hypnotist/pirate captain Django, while Klahadore, the false butler, faces down Luffy, Zolo, and Usopp. He thinks he has them where he wants them, but Zolo shows that the Meowban brothers are no match for him, although Usopp goes down, and cannot rise. No problem! Zolo will carry him, leaving Luffy to deal with Klahadore.

Synopsis:

As Luffy and Klahadore battle, the pirate butler’s plan becomes apparent—annihilation for all, including his trusty crew. He wants to get rid of anyone who knows about his past.  He reminds them of the circumstances that caused him to quit the sea, and his desire to take the riches from Kaya and go where no one will ever find him. Naturally, this does not sit well with the crew. Luffy manages to half-declaw Klahadore, even as Django is working on hypnotizing the stubborn Kaya to get her to sign the will in favor of her butler, but to no avail—she refuses to open her eyes.

Klahadore has had enough of Luffy and his insults, so he decides to let loose one final attack, although his crew begs him not to—his out-of-the-bag attack! Luffy doesn’t see the big deal.  “He’s only slouching…”

Famous last words, as the attack begins. Can Luffy counter it?

In the aftermath of the battle, Usopp exhorts his little band of pirates, as well as Miss Kaya, to say nothing of what has happened, to allow the village to live in ignorance of what has occurred in order to maintain their peace of mind. And to let them keep on believing that he is a liar. It’s a hard thing to do, but they agree that it is in the village’s best interest, as well as Usopp’s.  Kaya offers Luffy and his crew a ship—a caravel. Not the best, but a sight better than what they had. Of course, Kaya has ulterior motives, which quickly become apparent.

Having added a new crewmember, Luffy’s crew sets sail and raises their own standard for their new ship, the Merry Go. Luffy knows what needs to be done next—they need to find a ship’s cook, and quickly!

Can it be as easy as it sounds? With this bunch, not likely!

Commentary:

This is the last volume concerning the fight with Klahadore and his band and the saving of the village. Great fun, much bravery, and spectacular fights.  Luffy gains a new crewmember, one who is worthy to be part of his crew. Very satisfactory, while leading into new territory with the search for the ship’s cook, and we meet some interesting people onboard the Baratie, an ocean-going restaurant.

With One Piece, the fun never stops. It’s a good read for all ages, and I highly recommend it!

Manga and Romance Blog Hop!

I have to admit I am a relative newcomer to reading manga and yaoi and m/m romance compared to many authors. And I blame it all on my daughters. They encouraged me to read what I considered to be strange-looking graphic novels/mangas that were written funny and read even funnier. From back to front? Right to left? I'll admit that at first I couldn't do it and gave up. But they never gave up on me, and encouraged me and I finally got the hang of it.

I think my first yaoi was Antique Bakery. It's a very cute and very sweet story. I began to read more and more, and one day my Sarah sent me an email about going to Yaoi Con. I'm like - it's in San Francisco! (We're in St. Louis). Way too expensive. Then she sends me another email about a local convention, BishieCon. Well, that was better, so I checked it out and discovered that volunteers got money off their badges, but staff got in for free! I conferred with Sarah and we decided to become staff, so I emailed the con chair, and the rest is history. We became BishieCon staff members and worked both of the conventions - 2009 and 2010. In 2011 there was not a full convention, but rather a one day affair, which was not the same, and there is no Bishie Con now. But I met some nice people, including authors Katrina Strauss and Jessica Freely, as well as talented artist Amelie Belcher, and Dreamspinner Press (who published my first book, To The Max).

Ah, m/m romance, the other side of the yaoi coin. Where yaoi is graphic and like reading a comic, m/m romance are books mostly by women for women about men who love men. I never set out to write a m/m romance, per se, but there was this character talking in my  head who wanted to be heard - Max Montague - and his story just happened to become a m/m romance, To The Max, followed by the sequel, For Love of Max (number three is in the works even now - A Time For Max).

Not only do I write m/m romance, but I read it too, and I've met many friends in the writing community. I want to briefly discuss two authors who have written some of the best romance novels ever - collectively they are known as the Romentics, Scott & Scott, and they are a real life couple. They have several books that they published themselves, and I think Loose Id has re-released them with new covers. I bought mine from Amazon, so I have the original covers, and I love them to death. One of the best - my favorite m/m story of all time, I think - is Razor Burn. I can read this over and over and never tire of it, and it never fails to make me cry. It's moving, it's thrilling, it's romantic, sweet, and so much more. One of these days, I'll review it. But seriously, this story moves me in so many ways - I should have such a gift!

Now, to the contest! At the end of the Blog Hop, I shall be giving away three copies of anything on my backlist. The rules are simple - follow this blog, leave an email address, and tell me what yaoi or m/m romance you like to read and why. Whether it's your favorite or not, share with us! You have until midnight Sunday to enter! Now don't forget to check out all the other authors in the Blog Hop! And most importantly, have fun!
