Virtual Book Tour & Review: Ulterior Motives

Please welcome author Chandra Ryan, who has answered my questions, and is going to talk about her new release, Ulterior Motives. Also, after that, you'll see my review that I've written for the book.  Chandra will be awarding a $20 Amazon GC to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour. The more you comment, the better your chances of winning! To find the other stops on the tour, go here. And don't forget to look for the rafflecopter!

The Questions

1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?

If I were marooned on a small island with one person, it'd have to be my husband. He’s the only one who could survive with his sanity intact after being confined to a small space with me and all my neurotic tendencies. And the one thing I’d take with me would be a feather duster. Because…um…there’s dust everywhere. Yeah, that’s the reason.

2)      Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?
The Wizard of Oz, because having two little boys means my life seldom makes any logical sense. And I’d be
Dorothy. Always looking at rainbows and wondering what’s on the other side but, in my heart, I know that there’s no place like home.

3)      Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scenario using them:  night, union,  minute

She was standing in front of Union Station at one minute to midnight. The thick summer air clung to her like a damp cloth, but she refused to let it ruin her mood. In one minute, she’d see her love. In one minute, she’d be in his presence again.
It’d been such a long week while she waited for his return. And now, on this last night, in this last minute, the wait had become unbearable. Time was absolute. A minute was a minute. So how could it be that this night, this minute had lasted an eternity? One minute…

4)      You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to make love to anyone you want.
Who do you choose and why?
Catwoman. Because if I’m set loose on the world of fiction I’m coming back with the best story ever!

5)      What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?
My favorite romantic times are the lazy moments. When we’re still snuggling in bed at ten in morning. When we’re watching TV on the couch and the kids are tucked into bed. When we sneak off to lunch when the kids are at school. So much of our lives are rushed, I always savor the times we can just relax and enjoy being together.

6)      When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
I always start with the characters. I have no idea what the people will do until I know who they are. Kat sends off for a mail order groom because she’s a lonely rancher on a settler planet. It’s her life that has made her who she is. And it’s who she is that makes the start of the story possible.

7)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?
Helena Bonham Carter. We look nothing alik,e but she’s so damn cool that I kind of hope some of that coolness would rub off on me just by association.

   8)    Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?
Jack Torrance from the Shining. He’s played by Jack Nicholson and you don’t get cooler than that. But I also think it’s also because he’s just a normal guy, a writer, until he snaps. And when he goes crazy, he doesn’t do it by half-measures. That he’s an everyman makes his character that much more terrifying.

9)      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?
Steve Jobs. From what I’ve seen and read about him, he always seemed like a very passionate and creative person. He was confident and driven. And he was always hot.

10)   Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?
So much has changed over the last couple of years. We have women’s book groups reading BDSM. The Supreme Court’s ruling on DOMA. Prime time television shows allude to sexual practices that used to be considered kinky. So I don’t think there is. I think the world is pretty open to ideas right now.

BLURB:

Universal Defiance, Book One

On a rural settler planet, Kat must resort to putting out an ad to find a husband. She doesn’t expect to find love—that’s a dream in these parts—just a partner to help work her ranch. Then the devastatingly handsome Jasper answers her ad and turns her on in ways she never dreamed possible. Too bad he’s not who he says he is.

Jasper doesn’t know what he’s getting into when he ventures undercover to investigate a legal claim against Kat’s ranch. But after a toe-curling night under her roof and in her bed, he’s willing to do anything to stay there. He can’t say no to the tough-as-nails businesswoman who makes his body come alive.

When people start getting hurt, though, both Kat and Jasper have to decide how valuable one piece of land is. And the ranch that brought them together might be the very thing standing between them.

EXCERPT:

“Excuse me, sir.” Her calm words broke through the chaos of the port station and gained his undivided attention. This close to him, staring into his rich, brown eyes, her stomach began to churn with nerves. She quickly pushed through the sensation, though. She didn’t have the time for silliness. And it was the height of absurdity for her to be uncomfortable around her soon-to-be husband. “I’m Katarina Maxim. My friends call me Kat.”

She held her hand out to him in casual greeting as she tried not to fidget. She’d debated how to greet him as she’d driven to the station. A kiss seemed rather forward. But she did want him to feel welcomed. A handshake seemed like the best idea at the time. Now, as she waited for him to take her hand, she started second-guessing herself.

“Katarina, that’s a lovely name.”

She noted that he’d called her Katarina but tried not to let that color her first impression of him. She didn’t hate the name nor did she hate being called by it. It just didn’t fit her. Not anymore. Katarina sounded soft, delicate—refined, even. Like she’d been before her family had moved here. She could only hope that he didn’t see her as any of those things. If he did, he would be sorely disappointment when he got to know her better. “Kat. Only my mother called me by my full name,” she pressed.

“Kat it is.” His smile seemed genuine but his palm was as soft as new leather when he finally took hers. If he stayed, that would change. This planet demanded calluses and blisters. Her hands were proof of that.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Being from a rather nomadic family, Chandra Ryan loves to travel and meet people. But she’s found that sometimes, like when you’re stuck inside because of a good old-fashioned Southwestern heat wave, you have to make do. Fortunately for her and her loving family, who don’t like seeing her suffer from cabin fever, she’s found creating new people and places equally as fascinating. Also, you’re a lot less likely to spill your ice tea.

Ulterior Motives

Author: Chandra Ryan
Publisher: Ellora’s Cave
American release date: July 3, 2013
Format/Genre/Length: EBook/ SciFi Romance /78 pages
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★

Desperate times require desperate measures...

Kat Maxim knows she needs help if she’s going to hold on to her ranch, located on a distant settler planet. A husband is the answer, but she doesn’t have time to play games, or the patience to find a man willing to put in the backbreaking work needed to keep the ranch going. So as a last resort, she places an ad for a husband...

... and she gets Jasper.

Well, she has to admit he’s easy on the eyes. And more than she bargained for.

And he’s also not what he appears to be.

Actually, her need for a husband and her placing of the ad coincides with his desire to investigate her ranch. Claims have been filed against it, but before a decision can be reached, Jasper wants to find out what the facts in the matter are. When Kat learns his true purpose, she wants him to go, but he convinces her that together, they can find the truth.

This is sci fi meets western meets romance, all rolled up together, with a healthy dose of erotica.

I liked the characters. Kat is a tough woman, who knows what she wants, and isn’t afraid to do what’s necessary to accomplish it, even if it means marry a stranger she found in a personal ad. Luckily for her, they have a chemistry she can’t deny, but even that won’t get in the way of her goals. Can she trust Jasper? Whose side is he really on?

The writing flows smoothly, and I found myself hoping for Kat and Jasper to stay together after everything was said and done. The mystery of who is trying to get Kat’s ranch is a good one and kept me wondering almost until the end. The only real criticism I can make is that the setting of the settler planet is underutilized. You almost don’t realize it is another planet, which is where it draws its sci fi from. I think the author could have done more to make us feel like we’re on an alien planet. Otherwise, it could be any western with a mystery.
That being said, I like it, and I would recommend it to someone who likes strong women, and good looking men, and hot sex, laced with western style romance.

Guest Blogger Helena Harker

Yes, it's Friday at last! Thinking about the weekend? I know I am! Today I have a guest, author Helena Harker, who's answered my infamous Rick Reed questions, and is going to tell us about her latest release, Master's Submission. We're hanging out in my kitchen, so have a seat and relax, while I start the coffeemaker and Helena answers my questions.

The Questions
1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
Johnny Depp! I love his ability to play characters that are so different from one another. And I’d bring my Kindle, so I could read any book I wanted.

    2)  Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?

Hmmm, I don’t watch musicals, so I can’t say I know how to answer that. Oh, wait a minute! Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady. I have undergone a transformation since beginning to write erotica. That’s how I feel, like a woman transformed!

   3)    Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scenario using them:  disadvantage, overlooked, prefix
I was sitting at the coffee house with my crossword puzzle, trying to find 2 Down, “a prefix”, when Sam pulled up a chair and joined me. Oh God, did he have to show up now? After last night’s argument? Seriously? Apparently, my A cups weren’t big enough for him. Figures. My breasts had always been a disadvantage. I’d been overlooked a lot because I didn’t have 36Ds like a lot of other women out there. “Sam,” I said. “Go away. We’re done.” And I turned back to my crossword.

(Did you have to put the word “prefix” in there? LOL. That was tough!)

4)      You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why?
Vampires, lots and lots of vampires! Can I have Vampire Bill from the Sookie Stackhouse series? I’d have Eric Northman as well! Vampires are hypnotic, romantic, powerful, and when they suck your blood when you’re having sex, you get the most amazing orgasm!

5)      What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?
Dinner, champagne, chocolate and a pair of handcuffs! (Well, maybe Velcro restraints instead, because handcuffs hurt and leave marks!)

6)      When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
A bit of both. I tend to picture a character in a specific situation, so for me, the two go hand-in-hand. For “Master’s Submission”, I pictured a submissive woman who was given the opportunity to be a Domme for a change, and the idea really scared her.

7)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?
Helen Hunt. She’s ordinary, down-to-earth, doesn’t stand out much.  And that’s how I am.

8)      Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?
The Vampire Lestat. Does he count? He is tormented and evil at the same time. I hate him and feel sorry for him.

9)      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?
Actually, no, I don’t! Can’t think of one, anyway.

10)   Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?
I think the world is ready for pretty much anything these days. I don’t picture myself writing anything that is so objectionable that readers aren’t ready for it. I write BDSM, which is edgy, but if the world can handle Fifty Shades of Gray, it’s ready for my writing too!

Thanks for stopping by, Helena, it's been a blast!

Until next time, take care!

Guest Blogger AJ Llewellyn

Please welcome author AJ Llewelleyn today, who has bravely agreed to answer my infamous Rick Reed question, and to tell us about two of his upcoming releases! Also, he's promised to give away one of his paperbacks! So don't forget to comment and leave an email address!

While we get comfy on the beach, I'll let AJ answer the question!

A.J. Llewellyn: The Questions
)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
The person is my lover and the item is the lucky, magic carpet bag Mary Poppins had. You know, she would open it and anything she wanted just popped out of it, Even a huge reading lamp. Remember that moment in the movie? Because of course I'd still want to read and those marooning island get awfully dark early. And the lamp would work because it's magic!

2     Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?
Call Me Madam. I know...an obscure one. But I did it in school. I was the goofy secretary and I played the character for laughs. I fell off my chair a lot, dropped pens, knocked my glasses off my face. That's me in real life. A total klutz. I was called the class clown when I was six. It's my full-time occupation now.

3      Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scenario using them:  blessed, cooking, misdirect

LOL!
One warm June evening I was alone and thought I'd get some writing done.  When I write I like to eat so some cooking was in order. I opened the fridge but not a blessed thing was there! How could I have no food? I closed the door, reopened it. No, it wasn't a horrible dream. Nothing!
In the cupboards I found ramen noodles. I couldn't remember ever buying a packet of ramen noodles but checked the expiration date. Never. Since beggars can't be choosers, before I could misdirect my good intentions further I cooked those suckers and ate them!

4 You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why?

Oh I'd have a threesome with F. Scott Fitzgerald and Errol Flynn. Scott would be so witty and interesting. We have a lot in common because early tragedies led us both to becoming writers at very young ages. Errol would stop us from getting too serious or maudlin. He'd be hysterical and sexy in his Captain Blood tights. And he'd bring all the booze!

5     What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?

Honestly, with our work schedules, just being together watching a movie or listening to music is such a luxury. We both like candles and we love food. I love to cook but my Greek genes dictate that a meal for two feeds an army so we'd have plenty of leftovers for breakfast.

When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?

It honestly depends. Sometimes a story comes to me immediately. Other times the character. I had dinner with a good friend one night who had started dating a guy from her gym. He turned weird very quickly and was confused. He called during dinner and she invited him to join us for coffee. I was staggered when I saw him because I knew he was a gay porn performer.

He admitted that he was. He said he was gay-for-pay but he was conflicted by his passion for my friend. I felt it was bullshit. I was pretty sure he was using her for money. When he realized I'd seen his movies he became quite...proud. She was sitting there absolutely horrified. She'd had no idea. When he talked about how hot it was to fuck men I thought man, this guy is the worst kind of vampire!
it gave me an idea...and one of my favorite characters, Jimmy Thunder was born.
Jimmy however is a real vampire. And A Vampire in Waikiki, still one of my favorite erotic romance series came out of a grisly social disaster!

7     If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?

Without question, if she were alive, ZaSu Pitts. I adore her comedy work. She was very mobile and had an expressive face. She was the comic foil in so many classic movies like The Thrill of it All with Doris Day. She also played a manic switchboard operator in one of my favorite movies ever, It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World.
In her real life, like me she loved to cook and was a collector of candy recipes. She actually wrote a candy book, one of my most prized possessions: Candy Hits.

8     Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?

Christopher Lee. I still have a fierce mad crush on him from his Hammer Horror movies. I actually got to meet him at my friend Rick Baker's Halloween party. He still is sexy and imposing and absolutely brilliant.
His Dracula was scarier than most because he was so seductive.
Believe it or not, I spent the most exhilarating night of my life talking to Mr. Lee and---drum roll please, Billy Idol. I sat there watching these two wildly different men talking to one another and delighting in each other's company.
Billy and I were agog at Mr. Lee's amazing life adventures, some of which he shared with us.
I have the height of respect for Mr. Lee, a decorated WWII hero who was personally responsible (little known fact) for hunting down Nazis as part of a special ops. WOW! Dracula rules!

9      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?

Oh I have many, but my immediate response would be Alexandros Panagoulis. They called him the Poet Assassin.
He was a Greek revolutionary in the 1960s. A poet and author, he rose to power and fought against tyrannical rule in Greece. He was arrested and imprisoned for four years. Subjected to brutal torture, his story was shared by an Italian journalist, Oriana Fallaci who fell in love with him. Their love was never to be. She wrote two books about him that I have. A Man is still considered his definitive biography and Letter to a Child Never Born is a heartbreaking book she wrote to the baby she conceived with him and aborted for fear the child would become a target for assassination.
I still find these books emotionally difficult to read. For many years, Panagoulis was ignored in the Greek media and by historians. Now he is a symbol of freedom and courage.
In prison, he wrote poems, mostly out of his own blood. He died at the age of 36, in a car crash. I wish I could have known him...his passion, his fire, are inspiring to me.
By the way, I was shocked at some of the things I learned that were done to him. What a cruel race we are...

Here is one of his few remaining poems:
My Address
A match as a pen
Blood on the floor as ink
The forgotten gauze cover as paper
But what should I write?
I might just manage my address
This ink is strange; it clots
I write you from a prison
in Greece
(Military Prisons of Bogiati, 5 June 1971 – After beating)

10)   Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?

Guest Blogger Elaine Lowe

Today I have  guest author Elaine Lowe - who is going to set me straight on my opinions regarding menages as not being romance! While we settle back in our beach chairs, drinks in hand, let's hear what she has to say, and let you, the reader, decide.

A while back, I read a post where you were discussing the prevalence of the ménage a mucho and how that just isn’t romance. I think I may have just that perfect solution for your contemplation of the orgy book as romance. Although I’m the last person to deny folks their fantasies, the whole “seven horny guys share one lucky lady” genre didn’t really appeal to the romantic in me (and I followed one particular riveting #romfail read-along of a really craptastic one), and I certainly had no plans on writing such a book. Then, one day, I was struck with inspiration about having your fantasies and your beloved too…believe me, it’s much better than having that cake and eating it, and it works off a lot more calories.

I have to admit that it’s a rare M/F relationship that can stand the test of multiple partners, but that doesn’t stop that little voice of curiosity in the back of a woman’s brain, no matter how perfect our marriage might me. Enter that wonderful deus ex machine, MAGIC! Yes, magic, that fantastical solution. Hence, I had a great time writing my latest Ellora’s Cave Quickie, Magic Eights.

Susanna Walker Wong and her husband William are given an odd gift for their eighth anniversary, a Magic Eight ball. Susanna plays with it, makes a few errant wishes, and is more than a little bit shocked when two copies of her husband appear in her kitchen, calmly making dinner and washing up in perfect synchrony. When they seduce her, how can she say no? All in all, seven copies, one for each of her wishes, come to living, breathing life, and her husband comes out of the air conditioned comfort of their bedroom to watch everything unfold.

Magic Eights is a fun, sweaty, sexy bit of summer reading for the true romantic. I had so much fun writing it, and it actually has spawned an entire world in my imagination. I had to explain to myself what exact spell did Esme Morgan, the witch who gave Susanna that Magic Eight ball, use on Susanna and Will? The answer to that one opened up a whole universe of hidden magic, potential insanity, and the organization that cleans up the mess. I’ve just finished writing Memory Lapse, the next book in the series, about Anton Boroi, an unusual vampire, and the half-Fae woman he’s wooed for a century, Cynthia Margate. It’s Cynthia’s job to run an organization that keeps magic in check in our reality, and Anton’s not making it any easier, not when the human mage Esme Morgan could bring everything crashing around their heads any moment. Now is not the time to wake up in bed with Anton, covered with bite marks, having lost any memory of the last twenty four hours.

And don’t worry, Esme will be getting her own story told very soon, I promise.

Most of my books are historical romances with a touch of magic, be it the Regency period, Elizabethan, or the courts of the Mayan. It’s been fun to venture into contemporary paranormal, and I really hope you take a look at my books and enjoy.

It’s been a pleasure!

Elaine Lowe

Blurb:
A casual wish by a frustratingly horny wife results in a most unexpected bit of magic…

Susanna walks into her kitchen to see two copies of her husband of eight years, William. When they both seduce her, she’s helpless to resist. Who would want to? When another copy walks in and makes love to her, and another, she ceases to ask why, only, how much can she take?

Seven copies, one original, and all of them want to push her to the very brink. Can she handle them all? Sinful satisfaction is the best anniversary present, and eight is Susanna’s lucky number.

Excerpt: Blowing a frizzy strand of reddish-brown hair from in front of her face, Susanna Walker-Wong tried valiantly to relax into the suds of her bath. Truly soothing rose and chamomile scents floated into the hot air of the bathroom, and hot water always relaxed away the tension she held in her shoulders. But all these luxurious bubbles and steam didn’t really get to the core of her problem.

She was horny. Despite, or perhaps because of all the stresses in her life, she was ready to burst with the need for someone to touch her. Well, not just someone. It would be really fabulous if her husband would get a clue and look up from his computer screen long enough to notice her panting after him.

But instead, she took a bath. Really, she shouldn’t be this desperate. It was their eighth anniversary, and that morning their son had been taken to his grandparents’ house where he was likely being spoiled rotten. For lunch, she had been the entree and Will had worshipped her thoroughly before taking her out to a sumptuous dinner that they’d enjoyed and debated like the foodies they were. It should have been perfect, she should have been completely satisfied.

Her career was humming along, though she was only working on contract, part-time, with Nathan being only four years old and just starting preschool. Yeah, the dishes needed to be done, and there was yard-work that begged to be finished and the floor required vacuuming desperately. But if she ever finished her entire “to do” list, she’d be dead, right? She should be completely content.

So why was she absolutely burning with lust? Every time William breathed, she watched the rise and fall of his chest and wanted to tear off his T-shirt and run her hands over his pecs and lick his nipples until he groaned. She wanted to thread her hands in the blue-black of his unkempt hair and tousle it even more while she pulled his lips to hers. She wanted to knock his laptop to the ground and climb astride him and ride him until he screamed her name and woke up the neighbors in the next condo.

She moved slightly to get her shoulders deeper into the water and relieve the tension there. The soft rose scent of the bubbles fluttered up to try to console her, mixing with the subtle spiciness from Esme’s present. She sighed, her hands drifting over her clit, only to retreat quickly to her side when the door swung open.

Will stood in the doorway for a moment, taking in the soap-obscured view of her naked body and flashing her a brief but devastating grin that still made her heart go pitter-patter.

“Hello, my water nymph. How do you find your bath? And is that incense I smell?” He turned away from her and to the toilet, nonchalantly taking a piss, while she observed the curve of his ass in the ancient pair of khaki shorts that he wore.

“Bath’s searing hot, just like this nymph likes it. And no, the scent is something Esme sent us for our anniversary.” She looked him up and down. “Care to join me?” Her voice dripped with invitation, but she knew he didn’t share her particular fetish for baths.

“You’ve got to be kidding me! It’s like ninety-five in the house, and it’s only going to get hotter. How you can stand to take a hot bath in this weather is beyond my ken!” With a drip and a zip and a quick wash of his hands, he turned back to her, his eyes eating her up and making her throb even more than she had been. With his dark shining eyes carrying that edge of lust and his wicked goatee reminding her how much she liked the drag of his chin against her thighs, she was practically melting with need for him. But she didn’t let it show.

Her appetite for him was simply ridiculous after all the years they’d been together and she’d never been completely comfortable letting it all out. He was everything she ever wanted, and she didn’t feel like scaring him off now.

Bio:
Elaine Lowe is a work-at-home mom in Silicon Valley California. Of her many part-time jobs, her favorite one by far is writing. She has a background in biotech, but she has branched out into the demanding world of home management, toddler entertainment, transcription, envelope stuffing, and of course, writing romantic and erotic fiction.

A love of history, magic and romance combines to inspire a lot of her writing. That and her wonderful husband, who is a fantastic sounding board, support system, and research consultant. He really enjoys research. And so does she!

Thank you so much for joining me, Elaine - I love the premise of your "menage" - it puts a whole different spin on it, and one that technically doesn't involve cheating!

Does anyone have any thoughts, comments or questions? We'd love to hear from you!

Until next time, take care!
