Guest Blogger Marian Lanouette

Please welcome my guest, my friend, and my Museit Up author Marian Lanouette! I've had the great pleasure of editing her first two books in the Jake Carrington series. The second one, Burn in Hell, just released. I was able to coax Marian to come by and answer my  infamous Rick Reed questions! Have a seat, Marian, and let's get started, shall we?

The Questions
1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
I'd say my husband. I'll call him Dakota and my Nook.

2)      Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?
Hard question. I like the King and I. I'd say Deborah Kerr, because she is a strong woman.

  3)    Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scenario using them:  capitalism, failing, propose.
I'm starting to question why I ran for office. All the bills I propose never get past the beginning stages. I'm learning the hard way, only the very rich get what they want in our government. If you want to see capitalism at its best, go sit in on a session while our elected officials work. The system is failing and no one knows how to fix it.

4)      What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?
I like going out to dinner with him. This way neither of us is busy getting it ready and we can enjoy each other's company.

5)      When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
Depends on what pops into my head. Sometimes it’s the characters, sometimes the story line.

6)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?

Oh, I'd love Charlize Theron because she could glam me up and she's also a great actress.

7)      Who’s your favorite horror villain and why? Don't watch horror.

8)      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it? No

9)      Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?
I think you story Revelations will do that next week.  If people don't read it, they will be missing out on not only a great read but a thought-provoking one.

Blurb:
A botched missing person’s case.
A nervous mob boss.

Lt. Jake Carrington’s gut tells him Phil Lucci is being cagey—with good reason. Jake can see this case has been mishandled from the beginning. Sloppy police work? Or does Lucci's hand reach as far as the WPD? It’s Jake’s job to find the answers.
Then Jake meets Kyra Russell, a woman with an unusual job—she runs the local crematory. Despite the heated attraction between them, Jake becomes more and more suspicious of Kyra. Her gambling problem has already cost her a marriage and custody of her son. More than that, she also happens to be friends with Phil Lucci. Kyra assures Jake that it's just coincidence, but Jake's experience and his instincts warn him not to believe in chance. Can Kyra be burning bodies for the mob? If she is, what will Jake do about it?

Excerpt

“Son of a bitch,” Kyra whispered.

Life’s not fair. In the last two hours she’d dumped over three thousand dollars into the Goddamn machine. This bitch sits down right next to her and hits the jackpot on the first spin. I’ll never get my son back this way.

Kyra Russell wiped away the tears that rolled down her face. Why couldn’t she hit the jackpot? Ten grand—she only needed ten grand to pay her lawyer. Taking another hundred-dollar bill out of her purse, she stuffed it into the machine and hit the maximum-credit button, anticipating the results. Loving the rush, her stomach jumped with excitement. Each time, her mind cheered ‘this is it.’ As the wheels rolled into place, a cold chill raced through her veins. One by one, they landed. By the second symbol, she realized she’d lost again. Kyra’s heartbeat increased, pounding in her chest, beating in her ears like African tribal drums, causing her anger to spike. It’s the next one, she told herself, banging the maximum-credit button again. Lord, she needed to take a pee break, though didn’t dare leave her machine for fear someone else would hit the jackpot after she’d primed the machine.

Watching the attendant pay the woman, Kyra counted along with him. The
bitch won seventy-five hundred dollars. After the woman received her payout, Kyra tried signaling the attendant.

“Excuse me,” she called.

“Yes, ma’am?”

“I need to use the restroom. Can you watch my machine or lock it down?”

“I need to call a supervisor over. It’ll be a few minutes.” He pressed the button in his earpiece.

She watched him whisper into it. After ten minutes, the supervisor came over and locked down the machine for her, letting her know she needed to be back within the hour or they’d release the machine.

“Thank you.”

“Not a problem, Kyra,” the supervisor said.

He read her name off her reward card, addressing her like he knew her. Well, screw him.

She pushed off her seat, rushing to the ladies’ room. Kyra didn’t want to stay away too long, giving them a chance to re-program the machine against her or reset it. She hated the new system with the tickets. Since they’d installed it, she hadn’t won like she used to. How else could she lose constantly? Winning used to be the norm when she first started. It became addictive. She’d won twenty-five thousand dollars on one spin. On another night, she’d won eight thousand dollars.

Boy, the cash rolled in then. The feeling was indescribable when those wheels rolled into place and the bells went off. The noise the machine made when it hit a jackpot had crowds surrounding her. Though on that night she’d gone home with only twenty thousand dollars—she’d blown five grand trying to win more. Greed always took over. Winning excited her. It was the rush, the euphoria she got every time she pushed the spin button that kept her coming back.

The casino treated her like royalty, even gave her a host. He got her into the popular shows or restaurants anytime she wanted. Nothing was too good for Kyra, as long as she showed up and put her money into the machine. She became a regular at the players’ lounge—eat and drink for free. Yeah, free, her ass. The cost was extreme. Somewhere along the line, Kyra lost her self-respect—along with her marriage, her son, and her savings.

I have to say that Jake Carrington is a great character, and if you like detective mysteries with hot men and mysterious women, get both If I Fail and Burn in Hell!

Guest Blogger Chad Schimke

GUEST BLOGGER CHAD SCHIMKE
Today’s blog post showcases guest blogger Chad Schimke. He is the author of two novels, Picker and Pieces. Along with two novelettes, Walker and Weirder. Available in two formats, ebook and paperback. Either online through Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/author/chadschimke) and or signed by the author. One of his books is available FREE as an ebook download on Goodreads.

Thanks Julie! For suggesting a guest spot on your blog! I have learned so much. The concept of worldbuilding is intriguing. Best, Chad.

This feature contains info on previous releases, about the author, lit/ art inspirations, arts community, previews the next book, some promos (blogs, audio/ video, links, etc.), reviews for each and ends with a novel excerpt.

BOOKS
Picker is a crime drama that incorporates the creation myths, mysteries and miracles of New Mexico.
Pieces is paranormal suspense with a series of inter-connected character driven vignettes, about multi-cultural characters in San Francisco.
Weirder is a macabre fantasy horror about an apprentice magician and a bearded lady’s traveling carnival.
Walker is science fiction with an alternative to vampires, aliens and human hybrids.

ABOUT
Why do I write? Having lived a full life, I reached a tipping point.  Right now, I am overflowing. I write because I have no choice but to write. My growing up years were spent in Northwestern New Mexico. In a landscape of ancient puebloans, criminal minds, a uranium boom and UFO’s. Where there were early signposts to a writing life. Now I live in San Francisco, my adopted hometown, which is the vibrant city that inspires my work.
Where do my characters come from? All of them are shreds of truth borrowed (joined, dissected, rearranged, etc.) from real people. I have met every imaginable eccentric along the way. From the meathead bodybuilder, to a wealthy social climber, afterward a loudmouthed drag queen, then a notorious gang leader and finally a leggy brunette beauty in a skirt and heels.
What do I write? My books are occult paranormal that mix and match genre. I love crime, fantasy, horror and science fiction.

INSPIRATION
There are far too many authors to mention here, so check out my Goodreads bookshelf. Recently, I am inspired by pulp novels. Besides that, I love sideshow freaks. Such as Joseph Merrick (the Elephant Man) and Julia Pastrana (the Bearded Lady). My stories always begin within an iconic sense of place, real or imagined. After that, characters who hold my interest; that are difficult, conflicted, eccentric and unique.

COMMUNITY
I collaborate with the artist Solis (heartofsolis.com) for cover images and involvement in the city’s eclectic arts community. I organize a creative writer’s critique group that meets weekly. The members read each other’s selections to provide written and verbal critique feedback.

NEXT
I am currently working on a new novel that will be a paranormal action thriller. With identical twins, identity switches, secret clues, a haunted hotel and a twist ending.

REVIEWS
This section contains reviews of each book including the web link.

REVIEW OF PICKER BY EMILY ZIMMERMAN
"I read "Picker" in one sitting, after I was drawn into a taut, compelling crime story -- first by a sharply detailed, culturally complex and authentic rendering of place (New Mexico) and then by a skillful interweaving of well-articulated characters, parallel main plot and subplots, and events spanning two generations in time. I especially appreciated how the consequences of crime in this story play out in invisible, complex, and delayed ways, wherein cause-and-effect defies conventional expectations."

REVIEW OF WALKER BY VICKIE MATTHEWS
Unique and Different. Science Fiction combined with Paranormal. It has an interesting way of keeping you wanting to know more doubt each character and the events.

REVIEW OF WEIRDER BY KRISTIN CHAPMAN
It's odd, it's weird, and it gets, you guessed it, even "Weirder." I loved this book; just like the title suggests, it is a bit weird to read, but the story is good, and off at times, but a wonderful addition to my slightly off collection. I would highly recommend it for teen boys - in that weird moment kind of read. Love it. Keep it up!

REVIEW OF PIECES BY AMOS LASSEN
“Inter-Connected Character Vignettes by Amos Lassen. “Pieces” is completely different than “Picker”. It is a paranormal mystery composed of inter-connected character vignettes and set in San Francisco and takes place from the 1960’s to the 1990’s. The character who stands at the center is Lyman Blackmore, a casino owner who is lucky enough to be quite wealthy. His world is one of eccentric characters and is filled with suspense, crime and the out-of-the-ordinary. This is a read that keeps you guessing as you navigate its twists and turns. The characters themselves are reflections of the diversity of San Francisco. While I am not much of a mystery reader, I had a lot of fun reading this.”

EXCERPT FROM PIECES
This section contains an excerpt from my novel titled Pieces.

A group of twelve men and women dressed in loose black robes; chanted around a makeshift lighted altar, within the middle of the circle.

“Reveal yourself to the sky, our naked bodies close the connection!” Lilith Moonglow led the coven in the incantation circle. “Intermingle each other’s energy with the night and our lord Asmodeus.”

The bizarre group was concealed; framed by a cluster of trees, with a precipitous cliff in the foreground and the Pacific’s frothy waves in the background.

Each member dropped hoods and robes from their shoulders to reveal nude forms. A faint silver light from the new moon shimmered off translucent bodies.

“We are all equal animals before you, the father of all things. I call out your spirit from the deep recesses of the earth!” Lilith Moonglow had a profusion of curly auburn hair that cascaded along her back. She had alabaster skin, lifted ribs along with full hips and breasts. A garland of vines wrapped across her throat and fell down her chest.

“Let no one be present, unless his heart is open.” Lyman Blackmore issued the incantation that he had prepared earlier that day. The spell was arranged under Lilith’s guidance, design and supervision.

Lyman passed a gold leaf paper to Lilith, with an incantation inside a pentagram. The paper went around the coven circle; each member held the spell for a moment then passed it along.
“Asmodeus, the god of luck and gambling…I beseech thee, arise now in our midst!”

The picturesque night view of Land’s End overlooked the Marin Headlands, the Golden Gate Bridge and led out toward the Pacific Ocean.

“This spell is charged with our intent.” Lilith stood between the nude witches on top of a soft sandy spot. She motioned in the air with a silver dagger, tracing an imagined star inside a circle, to form a pentagram.

The witches raised their hands to release the power of the new moon. Lilith placed the paper within a footed pot and lit a fire with a candle.

Whoosh! A spirit rustled leaves with the winds, broke waves, ground rocks below and uttered eerie audible noises that were near the coven.

“Pure and real, the spell is cast! My touch releases the bounds of your immortal soul.” Lilith anointed him (never touching his body) with her hands…from Lyman’s forehead to his toes. When he turned around, she motioned similarly across his back and calves. “Hail and welcome our master! Our touch and naked bodies represent the connection between us, the release of the power of the coven!” Power flowed within the circle! “We assemble in secret!” An ethereal mist flickered with a soft glow. “Ah!” Lilith writhed and caused her long red tresses to undulate on her bare shoulders. “Master, you are here!”

Who asked me? The other worldly male voice came out of Lilith’s body. Human, you will obey me! Her eyes rolled back in her head. Or, face my retribution! Her body contorted in an unnatural posture.

“Dear master,” Lyman said. “Please bring wealth to my gambling house…I assure you of your benefit to the coven!”

Be warned and don’t break your promise! Lyman felt a whooshing surge of energy enter his body. In less than an instant, it was gone. He collapsed, his body crumpled by overwhelming fatigue. Thud! He hit the dirt in the middle of the circle.

Thanks for stopping by, Chad!  It was fun!

Guest Blogger AJ Llewellyn

Please welcome author AJ Llewelleyn today, who has bravely agreed to answer my infamous Rick Reed question, and to tell us about two of his upcoming releases! Also, he's promised to give away one of his paperbacks! So don't forget to comment and leave an email address!

While we get comfy on the beach, I'll let AJ answer the question!

A.J. Llewellyn: The Questions
)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
The person is my lover and the item is the lucky, magic carpet bag Mary Poppins had. You know, she would open it and anything she wanted just popped out of it, Even a huge reading lamp. Remember that moment in the movie? Because of course I'd still want to read and those marooning island get awfully dark early. And the lamp would work because it's magic!

2     Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?
Call Me Madam. I know...an obscure one. But I did it in school. I was the goofy secretary and I played the character for laughs. I fell off my chair a lot, dropped pens, knocked my glasses off my face. That's me in real life. A total klutz. I was called the class clown when I was six. It's my full-time occupation now.

3      Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scenario using them:  blessed, cooking, misdirect

LOL!
One warm June evening I was alone and thought I'd get some writing done.  When I write I like to eat so some cooking was in order. I opened the fridge but not a blessed thing was there! How could I have no food? I closed the door, reopened it. No, it wasn't a horrible dream. Nothing!
In the cupboards I found ramen noodles. I couldn't remember ever buying a packet of ramen noodles but checked the expiration date. Never. Since beggars can't be choosers, before I could misdirect my good intentions further I cooked those suckers and ate them!

4 You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why?

Oh I'd have a threesome with F. Scott Fitzgerald and Errol Flynn. Scott would be so witty and interesting. We have a lot in common because early tragedies led us both to becoming writers at very young ages. Errol would stop us from getting too serious or maudlin. He'd be hysterical and sexy in his Captain Blood tights. And he'd bring all the booze!

5     What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?

Honestly, with our work schedules, just being together watching a movie or listening to music is such a luxury. We both like candles and we love food. I love to cook but my Greek genes dictate that a meal for two feeds an army so we'd have plenty of leftovers for breakfast.

When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?

It honestly depends. Sometimes a story comes to me immediately. Other times the character. I had dinner with a good friend one night who had started dating a guy from her gym. He turned weird very quickly and was confused. He called during dinner and she invited him to join us for coffee. I was staggered when I saw him because I knew he was a gay porn performer.

He admitted that he was. He said he was gay-for-pay but he was conflicted by his passion for my friend. I felt it was bullshit. I was pretty sure he was using her for money. When he realized I'd seen his movies he became quite...proud. She was sitting there absolutely horrified. She'd had no idea. When he talked about how hot it was to fuck men I thought man, this guy is the worst kind of vampire!
it gave me an idea...and one of my favorite characters, Jimmy Thunder was born.
Jimmy however is a real vampire. And A Vampire in Waikiki, still one of my favorite erotic romance series came out of a grisly social disaster!

7     If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?

Without question, if she were alive, ZaSu Pitts. I adore her comedy work. She was very mobile and had an expressive face. She was the comic foil in so many classic movies like The Thrill of it All with Doris Day. She also played a manic switchboard operator in one of my favorite movies ever, It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World.
In her real life, like me she loved to cook and was a collector of candy recipes. She actually wrote a candy book, one of my most prized possessions: Candy Hits.

8     Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?

Christopher Lee. I still have a fierce mad crush on him from his Hammer Horror movies. I actually got to meet him at my friend Rick Baker's Halloween party. He still is sexy and imposing and absolutely brilliant.
His Dracula was scarier than most because he was so seductive.
Believe it or not, I spent the most exhilarating night of my life talking to Mr. Lee and---drum roll please, Billy Idol. I sat there watching these two wildly different men talking to one another and delighting in each other's company.
Billy and I were agog at Mr. Lee's amazing life adventures, some of which he shared with us.
I have the height of respect for Mr. Lee, a decorated WWII hero who was personally responsible (little known fact) for hunting down Nazis as part of a special ops. WOW! Dracula rules!

9      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?

Oh I have many, but my immediate response would be Alexandros Panagoulis. They called him the Poet Assassin.
He was a Greek revolutionary in the 1960s. A poet and author, he rose to power and fought against tyrannical rule in Greece. He was arrested and imprisoned for four years. Subjected to brutal torture, his story was shared by an Italian journalist, Oriana Fallaci who fell in love with him. Their love was never to be. She wrote two books about him that I have. A Man is still considered his definitive biography and Letter to a Child Never Born is a heartbreaking book she wrote to the baby she conceived with him and aborted for fear the child would become a target for assassination.
I still find these books emotionally difficult to read. For many years, Panagoulis was ignored in the Greek media and by historians. Now he is a symbol of freedom and courage.
In prison, he wrote poems, mostly out of his own blood. He died at the age of 36, in a car crash. I wish I could have known him...his passion, his fire, are inspiring to me.
By the way, I was shocked at some of the things I learned that were done to him. What a cruel race we are...

Here is one of his few remaining poems:
My Address
A match as a pen
Blood on the floor as ink
The forgotten gauze cover as paper
But what should I write?
I might just manage my address
This ink is strange; it clots
I write you from a prison
in Greece
(Military Prisons of Bogiati, 5 June 1971 – After beating)

10)   Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?

Many! But guess what! I'll tell them anyway! Julie, thanks so much for these thought provoking questions. I loved them!!! I'd like to offer a free paperback copy of my book Pearl Harbor 1 which contains the first two books in the series to one of your readers. All they have to do is post a comment and I'll let you pick a winner!

Tomeo spends time with the tanomoshi, Shin Yamada, and as the men come to know one another, deep feelings emerge, the transition from friends to lovers inevitable.
