Guest Blogger AJ Jarrett and a Contest!

Today my guest is my friend and fellow author AJ Jarrett. AJ's answered my infamous Rick Reed questions! Plus, she's going to tell us about her newest release, Set Me on Fire. Besides being a fellow Silver author, AJ is also one of our Wednesday Briefers, and has stories in the Wicked Watchers anthologies, at House of Erotica. Now, while I make us something delicious to drink - maybe some caramel macchiatos? - why don't you answer those questions, AJ.

Contest? Did I say contest? Read all the way to the end!

The Questions
1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
I would have to say my husband. It’s totally cliché to say this but he is my best friend.  In fact the only other person I can stand to be around for long periods of times without wanting to strangle. Plus he’s neat and clean and does a lot of house work. Bonus for me!

The one item I would just have to have is my hitachi magic wand. Ladies if you don’t know what that is, Google it, then buy it. It’ll be the best gift you ever got yourself. Now if the island doesn’t have electricity, a reading device that ran on solar powered energy and that I was able to have access to an unlimited amount of books.

2)      Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?
I would have to say Beauty and the Beast. I’m picking this for purely selfish reasons because I absolutely just love it.
And the character I would be is the Beast. Go ahead and laugh but it’s true. If anyone ever meets my husband they would totally agree with that. I’m the one who flies off the handle and starts yelling instead of talking. I’m ready to argue at the drop of a hat. My husband is the one who wants to talk things out and hates to fight. We have a totally role reversal in our marriage. But that’s why I love him!

3)      Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scenario using them:  sacking, skeptical, wholeheartedly
There is a football game being played. Two team rivals after the championship title. The whistle blares and the quarterback shouts out the play. The linebacker for the other team has visions of sacking the sexy star player to the ground, showing him who’s boss. Before he realizes what’s happening the quarterback is sprawled out on the ground pinned beneath the muscular opponent he’s been eye fucking all day. After the shock of the hit wears off the quarterback looks up at the man and knows wholeheartedly he isn’t being skeptical in saying he’s in love with the man.

4)      You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why?
Oh that is so easy. It would be Eric Northman from the Sookie Stackhouse novels. And I felt this way long before the TV show came out. Something about an older attractive and dangerous man pursuing me gets me all kinds of excited. It also doesn’t hurt that in the books he’s described as tall, muscular, with long blond hair. That’s like hitting all my hot spots.

5)      What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?
I’m a pretty easy girl. It doesn’t take much to romance me and my husband is the same way. If we’re lucky enough to get a babysitter for the kids we like to enjoy dinner together. We usually forgo going to the movies or to a bar to go home and have adult quiet time uninterrupted. Not having to worry about someone knocking on the door and you can be as loud as you want. I love those times.

6)      When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
Characters. I usually here a dialogue going on in my head and from there I develop the plot. When I say this to people who don’t write, they think I’m crazy. They automatically assume I have a mental illness, because hearing voices in your head isn’t a good thing. I have to explain its more like my imagination and not voices telling me to do bad things. I’m honestly starting to question the company I keep because so many of them are so quick to jump to the conclusion that I’ve lost my marbles.

7)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?
I would say Kristen Stewart. Only because she comes off as being quiet and shy but underneath you know lies a crazy person.

Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?
I was a teenager when the movie Scream came out and I have to say that was the first movie in a long time that actually scared me. So I’d have to say, I think they call him, Ghostface. Because behind that mask it could be anyone that you know. Pretty freaky.

Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?
I’m going to have to go with Abraham Lincoln. He was basically a self-made man who helped accomplish a lot of good in his short life. Plus I just saw a preview for Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. Not based on actual facts, but still piqued my interest in this historical figure.

Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?
No. I’ve read so many books over my life that I personally can’t think of a storyline that hasn’t been told in one form or another. There are so many talented and amazing authors in the world who push the boundaries of what is perceived as normal and I feel I can only add my own spin to a story that has already been told. I hope that makes sense. If I do ever think of a particular story like that, world ready or not, I wouldn’t hesitate to write it.

Set Me On Fire - Blurb
Kelly Lynch wanted to become a firefighter to help people, but with his accident prone nature his boss, Nate Anderson, thinks he’s an utter fool. Kelly never planned to fall for Nate but now that he has, he realizes loving is easy; understanding and compromise are hard.

Nate has been attracted to Kelly since his first day at the station house. Watching the younger man day in and day out is frustrating. Kelly’s latest stunt almost got him killed and Nate fears losing the man of his dreams.

Will Nate’s demanding ways cause the embers of their love to die out? Or will Kelly prove he has what it takes to be with Nate, at work and in the bedroom?

Story Excerpt
"God, I swear if you get me out of this mess I promise to listen and follow orders for the rest of my life, or at least make the effort to try," Kelly prayed aloud as he crawled, belly down, across the dirty floor. He was doing his best to see through the smoke-filled room but still couldn't find where he'd entered.

Kelly scooted a little more, using touch more than sight to navigate his way through the smoky haze and chunks of debris. He had separated from the team of men he'd come into the burning building with. A choice he now regretted immensely.

He had made a stupid move, but he could have sworn he'd heard someone cry out for help. A completely bonehead move to run off without telling anyone. One of the first things they taught you when you became a firefighter, never leave your team, or at least partner with someone else, but never go off on your own.
But no, he thought he knew better and wanted to be the hero and save the poor individual stuck in this fire pit. Now he was starting to wonder if he'd just imagined he heard the cry for help.

"I'm so fucked." Kelly rested his helmet-covered head on the ground and then proceeded to bang his head on the hard floor. It was useless, he was trapped.

"Lynch."

Kelly sat up at the sound of someone yelling his name. What direction had the voice come from? He couldn't tell. The sound was so faint compared to all the hissing and crackling noises of the fire in full blaze all around him.

"God damn it, Lynch, where are you?"

He heard the shout again, only louder. Kelly felt his way around the floor until he came face to face with a boot. He started to look up when large, glove-covered hands grabbed the back of his jacket.

"What do you think you were doing, you dumb shit? You're lucky we noticed you missing."

Kelly could tell by the size of the man dragging him out of the entryway that it was Luke Parsons, one of the biggest guys in the house. He may be a big beefy guy, but he was super nice, and Kelly couldn't have been more grateful Luke found him and not the lieutenant of their station house.

"I'm sorry but I thought I heard someone call out for help." Kelly grabbed at Parsons' hand, still attached to Kelly's jacket, dragging him along. "Please, Luke, I know I heard someone," he pleaded as he tried to pull himself free of Luke's hold.

The fire raged through an abandoned building in the East Bottoms of downtown Kansas City. While the only people in this building were more than likely homeless, they were still people who needed to be saved.
"Are you sure, kid?" Kelly nodded enthusiastically. "Okay then let's see what we can find. We don't have much time; this building is going up faster than a hay bale."

"Okay."

As Kelly followed Luke back into the room, the sound of a faint cry grabbed both their attention. Luke pushed Kelly behind him as he made his way toward the small whimpering sounds. As they got closer, Kelly saw the slight frame of a man huddled in the corner. Luke bent down and snatched the man up in his arms.

Luke looked to Kelly. "Lead the way. Follow the way we just came and you'll see the crew in the hallway."

Kelly navigated through the smoke and falling ceiling tiles toward the exit. As he reached the doorway the hall was empty. He turned back to Luke. "They're not here." Panic started to eat away at his composure.

"Shit," Luke shouted. "Here, kid, take my radio and let the guys know we're coming out with another man in tow. They need to have paramedics ready for this guy."

"You know the way out?" Luke nodded as Kelly took the offered radio and lifted his face shield. "This is Lynch and Parsons. We got a survivor and we're coming out."

"Copy that, son. Make your way out fast. We just got the order to clear the building and let it burn. Move your asses now."

He looked back to Luke. "You get that?"

"Yep. Head out the door and the stairs are on the right. We need to go up one flight then a little ways down we’ll come to a set of double doors and that will take us outside." Kelly watched as Luke hefted the man higher on his shoulder. “Start moving.”

Kelly nodded his understanding and made his way toward freedom. Times like this he questioned why he wanted to be a firefighter. No one in his family was one, so it wasn't about carrying on a legacy or some shit.
As he pushed the door open with his shoulder, he was greeted by sunlight streaking through the smoky clouds rolling off the burning building. He looked back toward Luke, the man he was carrying appeared passed out over his shoulder. That was why Kelly had chosen this profession. He wanted to make a difference. Have a job he could be proud of.

"Over here."

Kelly and Luke walked right over to the ambulance and deposited the man with the paramedics. They then made their way over to the engine where the rest of the crew stood watching the fire burn. Kelly flipped up his face mask and removed his helmet. Then he took off his jacket, tucked the heavy material under his arm, and stared up at the building. If Luke hadn't found him, Kelly would be one crispy critter right about now.

"What the fuck were you thinking?"

Someone grabbed Kelly by the shoulders and threw him up against the side of the truck, causing him to bump the back of his head hard against the metal door. When his vision cleared he saw Nate Anderson, lieutenant of station house sixteen, standing right in front of him with the attitude Kelly had hoped to avoid.

"Hey, Nate, back the fuck up." Luke pushed himself between him and Nate. "If it wasn't for Kelly, that man over there would be dead."

Nate took a step back and looked toward the ambulance where the man was being triaged. Kelly could see the vein pulsing at Nate's temple. He wasn't happy and Kelly knew he would be hearing all about that unhappiness later.

Nate looked back at him over Luke's shoulder. "You and I will talk about this back at the station house." Nate pointed a finger at him and then walked away.

He was so screwed. Every time he made a mistake Nate made sure to tell him how and why he screwed up. Granted, it was Nate's job to go over the mistakes they made so they could learn from their errors, but his lectures were becoming a broken record. Kelly wasn't looking forward to this discussion.

Adult Excerpt
The younger man leaned forward to nibble at his ear. Goosebumps ran over his arms making the hair stand up. Warm moist heat tickled his ear when Kelly spoke. "It's not teasing when you plan on making good on the offer."

He pulled back to look at Kelly. "Why don't we eat before our pizza gets cold? Then take a walk along the water and just talk." Nate removed Kelly's hand from his crotch and placed it on the table. All the sexual promises for later were fine and dandy but he wanted to make it clear he desired more than just a quick roll in the hay.

"Okay." Kelly turned away but not before Nate saw the scrunched-up look of confusion on his face.

They ate in silence. When they finished they picked up their trash and threw it in the garbage can. The sun set and the sky darkened to twilight. As they made their way toward the trail, Nate grabbed Kelly's hand and held it loosely as they walked the river's edge. He felt Kelly jump at the contact. Nate ran his thumb over Kelly's knuckles to soothe him. He wanted to get to know Kelly on a more intimate level so Kelly would see him as more than his boss and more than an easy lay.

"So, Kelly, tell me why you wanted to be a firefighter?" Nate thought it best to start off with the easy questions first.

"Good question. I guess you could say I stumbled upon it when I was in college. I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life." Kelly continued walking but kept his gaze lowered to the cement path they were walking on.

"One afternoon as I left the library and headed back to my dorm, there was this huge crowd standing around outside my building. As I got closer I saw the dorm next to mine was on fire. Then I heard the sirens of the fire engines." Kelly stopped walking to look him in the eye. "I stood out there and watched as they saved some of the students trapped inside then got the fire under control. Watching the firemen work together as a team had to be one the most amazing things I had ever seen."

A look of wonderment crossed the younger man's face and Nate had to grin. He knew the feeling of utter awe at watching and wanting to be the one helping save the people in the building. And then the need to be the one to put out the fire tearing the building apart. Yeah, he knew the feeling all too well. Fighting fires ran in his blood. All the men on his father's side of the family had been firefighters and now he and his brother carried on the family tradition.

"Well that and all the gorgeous firemen standing around. Hot as hell."

The thought of Kelly thinking any other man or men were attractive left a bitter taste in his mouth. He went to pull Kelly closer but the man dropped his hand and took off running down the trail.

"I know that look. You so want to ream my ass right now," Kelly yelled over his shoulder as he ran. "You're going to have to catch me first."

Nate dug his heels in and started running all out. His little firefighter liked to play with fire. Well this was one time an all-consuming fire was just fine. What he felt for Kelly burned him alive on the inside and he wanted to set Kelly ablaze with the same need.

Kelly's shorter legs carried him faster than Nate thought possible but before long he caught up to him. In one quick move he grabbed Kelly around the waist and took him off his feet. He swung him around until they faced each other. Kelly breathed hard from exertion and laughing. The gleam in his eyes and the sweat running down his temple from his hair crushed any of Nate's thoughts of going slow.

Nate wrapped his arms around Kelly's waist. Pulled together chest to chest Nate lowered his mouth and bit at the supple bottom lip of Kelly's mouth. Kelly moaned so loudly he scared a few birds out of a nearby tree.
Without thinking Nate ran his hands down Kelly's back until he grabbed the firm globes of his ass. He picked Kelly up off his feet and walked him backwards off the trail to give them the privacy to be intimate without fear of being interrupted. Kelly's fingers dug into his shoulders as he pushed him up against a tree.

Nate lowered Kelly's feet back to the ground and smashed their lips together. Kelly parted his lips when Nate forced his tongue against the crease, coaxing and prodding until Kelly's tongue came out to play.

Kelly gave as well as he got but Nate wanted total control. He lowered his hands to the waist at the back of Kelly's shorts. The shorts were baggy enough to allow him to slide one hand down the back. He pushed past Kelly's boxers and cupped his bare ass cheek with his hand. The skin was slightly sweaty from the humid heat and their hard run a few minutes earlier. Nate wanted to lick and taste the salty skin until the younger man begged to be fucked.

The kiss went on and on, not rushed or forced. The more Nate rubbed at the hard, muscled ass, the more Kelly relaxed. Seeing his opportunity, he pulled at Kelly's cheeks until his hole was exposed to Nate's questing digit. He gently caressed the tiny pucker, feeling the rippled skin twitch against his finger.
Kelly pulled away to look up at him. "Do it."

Guest Blogger Alexa Bourne

Happy Monday to one and all! Today I'd like you to welcome my guest, author Alexa Bourne. I decided to take  a trip to Scotland, and Alexa was kind enough to consent to join me there. Which is serendipitous, considering the subject of her novel! While I try to find us a nice lad in a kilt, I'll let Alexa answer a few questions.

Hello Alexa. Welcome. Can you tell us where the inspiration for Her Highland Champion comes from?

Absolutely! It started as an idea while I visited Glenfinnan, Scotland. It was such a beautiful and peaceful place, and I immediately began thinking about a contemporary romance set there. The story took quite a journey because that first trip to Glenfinnan was in 1997, back when I really didn’t know how to craft a good story. But the scenery, the characters that sprang to life while I was there, and the story stayed with me until I was able to revise it and submit it to Decadent Publishing for the Honor Guard series.

What was the hardest part of writing Her Highland Champion?

Cutting out scenes that I loved but that, I knew as a writer, wouldn’t work. The first version of it was a 400-page novel. When it came time to revise it for Decadent, I had A LOT of chopping to do! But ultimately the chopping exercise has made me a better writer and it has made the story the best it can be.

When and why did you first become interested in writing romance?

I came to reading and writing romance later than many writers. (I was an action/adventure/suspense focused writer in my early years!) I was out of college before I read my first romance. I think what drew me in was reading and writing stories with satisfying endings, where people found the one true love of their lives. When I finally embraced romance as “my genre” I was able to explore so much more and make my action-packed stories so much richer.

How do you plan your stories? What tools do you use on a frequent basis?

Plan my stories? What does that mean? LOL! I actually don’t plan. I write a rough draft first, starting with only 1 scene or a character or 1 idea. I free-write the book and in the process of writing the rough draft more of the story unfolds for me. (I usually go through 4-6 drafts per book.) As for tools, I HAVE to write a rough draft with paper and a pen or pencil. I started my writing in the days before everyone had a personal computer and that has stuck with me. As a manuscript gets closer to being finished, I spend more time on a computer.

How important do you think it is for female readers to identify with the heroines in your books?

I do think if you identify with parts of the heroine’s struggles it gives you a deeper understanding of the story and a richer reading experience. If you can’t identify with the heroine, you’re less likely to sympathize with her and even less likely to root for her.

Thank you for joining us today, Alexa. It’s been a pleasure to talk with you.

Thank you for having me join you! It was great fun!

Can you tell us a little bit about your book, please?

Champion Excerpt:
She turned to the bedside. A man stood there dressed in dark green sweats, with both hands clenched around the silver bedside bar. He was handsome, with light eyes, dark hair cropped close to his head, and a firm jaw. It was his hands, though. They drew her attention. Clean skin, defined knuckles, large fingers. Hands rough from a hard day’s physical labor, and yet, she imagined, gentle enough to caress the afternoon’s sufferings away.
“It’s good to see you awake.” He smiled. “You gave us all quite a fright.”
Okay, the Scottish accent drew her attention, too. At once, it both melted away some of her fears and sparked a whirlwind of questions.
“Where am I?” Her throat scratched like sandpaper.
“St. Catherine’s Hospital.”
She swallowed hard. “Where is that?”
“Fort William.” He reached for something on the table by her bed and brought back a plastic cup with a straw. “Here.”
“Thank you.” The warm water coated her sore vocal cords. She handed the cup back to him.
Wait a minute. Fort William? The only Fort William she knew was in Scotland. “I don’t understand. How did I get here?” Ignoring the aches in her body, she pressed both palms to the sheets on each side of her and pushed herself up. The blanket fell away from her chest and a new chill surrounded her. “What’s going on?”
Her arms shook, and she collapsed back to the bed.
“Relax.” The man set his palm on her shoulder, as if to keep her flat against the mattress. The heat of his fingers seeped through her hospital gown and into her skin. “I found you unconscious on the beach in Glenhalish. I called for an ambulance, and they brought you here.”
“I was in Glenhalish?”
“Aye, on a three day tour of the Highlands. Do you not remember being there?”
“No.” She squinted and studied him. No memories surfaced. “Do I know you?”
He shook his head. “Only from the beach. I’m Malcolm Fraser.”
She opened her mouth and then closed it again. Her gaze drifted to her lap as tears burned in the corners of her eyes. Panic swelled in her chest and into her throat.
“What is it, lass?” he asked with such tenderness.
“Can you tell me my name?”

Guest Blogger Mathilde Watson

Good morning! Please welcome my friend and fellow author Mathilde Watson! She's going to talk to us about her latest release, and she's bravely answered the infamous Rick Reed questions! Not only that, but she's brought prizes!  Yes, prizes!  In other words - we're having a contest!  Woot! Two people will win a copy of the Rob Williams' film Roleplay. All you have to do is comment, either here or on Mathilde's blog, and be sure to leave your email address. Simple enough, right?

Okay! Mathilde, let's get comfortable in the kitchen, I'll brew us some tea, you go ahead and answer those pesky questions!

The Questions
1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
Well, I’m not stupid. If I were marooned on an island I’d want someone with me who both knows how to ‘rough it’ and make things happen and is also fun to be with—so I’d bring my little brother along. The guy is awesome. And an Eagle Scout. My one item would be a big metal bowl, because seriously? Everything else can be improvised.
2)      Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?
Gene Kelly made a movie version of a musical a long time ago called IT’S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER. It was about three war buddies with big dreams who go their separate ways when peace is declared with a promise to get together for a reunion in 10 years. One of the characters has become a big businessman, successful, but always away and has no time for his family. Another has opened a small diner, but fancies himself a big, fancy restaurateur.  The third has done nothing with his life. He has wasted his life over the 10 years that have passed and suddenly realizes what a fool he’s been after their reunion.
That’s me. In the 10 years since I’ve graduated high school I haven’t accomplished much of anything- but being reunited with my best friend inspired me to go after my dreams no matter the cost. “Could it be, I like myself?!” Yeah. Great movie- you should check it out!
3)      Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scenario using them:  inconvenience, tiresome, abbreviate
Okay- here we go.
Picking up a hitch-hiker along on the way during a cross-country road trip proved to be a real inconvenience. The guy is a tiresome prick, a law school drop-out hippie wannabe who is constantly texting on his cellphone and who even speaks in abbreviation- WTF? He actually responds to his own verbal jokes by saying-out loud- R-O-F-L!
4)      You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why?
Seriously? Who could resist Dr. Frank-N-Furter? Just look at him. Do I need to explain? :D
5)      What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?
Honestly, I have no idea. I’d like to say I don’t know because I’m single again, but really? That’s probably WHY I’m single. Again. :D
6)      When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
Normally I start with a character. They show up in my head and we talk, become friends. And sooner or later we get into an argument and a story is born… the struggle between their own identity and the one I desperately wanted to assign to them.
7)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?
The only actor who could possibly do ME justice is Christopher Walken. Or maybe William Shatner could pull it off. Possibly.
8)      Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?
I don’t know if ALICE IN WONDERLAND qualifies as horror or not-or if this character is actually a villain- but The Cheshire Cat scares the crap out of me. I mean, He/She/It has no moral compass and is only interested in its own amusement. And with that kind of power? That creature has starred in many of my nightmares.
9)      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?
Mulan. That chick served in the military for 12 years and moved up the ranks to command an army- all the while successfully convincing everyone around her that she was a man- a strong, fierce man and a force to be reckoned with.
10)   Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?
My worry isn’t that ‘the world isn’t ready to receive it,’ but that I’m not ready to share it. I have a manuscript I started back in high school that I add to regularly and edit constantly… but the idea of submitting that particular piece of work to a publisher terrifies me.

Excerpt from Play Along

Thursday, July 29, 2010.
"Good evening, sir, and welcome to the Grand Chancellor Hotel." The perky redhead smiled at Mark from behind the check-in counter in the extravagant hotel lobby. "Do you have a reservation with us?"
"Yes, I do," Mark said. "It's under—"
Two men emerged from a door off to the side of the lobby, one issuing orders that drowned out Mark's words, "Beverly, Mr Stallings here is going to need one of the conference rooms from October 7th through the 10th. Could you take care of it for me? Oh, and be sure to reserve twenty rooms under his name, as well."
Mark froze at the sound of that voice. He watched, dumbstruck, as the men shook hands and the younger of the two headed for the exit while the other approached the counter.
The girl behind the desk began typing furiously, an impatient frown marring her freckled face. "Yes, of course. Just one moment, sir. I was about to get this gentleman here checked in. What was your name, sir?"
Mark had no time to answer. The businessman turned and looked at him, recognition immediately lighting in his eyes. "Holy shit. Mark Nelson!"
Mark looked down at the familiar face of Nathan Marshall and tried to remember how to breathe. Nate was still stunning, the same blond hair and piercing blue eyes, the same firm athletic build filling out a pair of slacks and a clinging, white dress shirt. Mark found himself suddenly embraced by his former lover in a macho hug, Nate slapping his back harder than necessary. The man hadn't changed at all.
"Good to see you again, Nate."
Nate stepped back and looked him over, his eyes raking over Mark's body like a caress, and Mark's knees nearly gave out under him.
"God Mark, you're fucking huge! Looking good!" Nate reached out and squeezed the muscles in his arm and Mark's face heated in a pleased but embarrassed blush. He'd been awkward and gangly in his youth, a high metabolism keeping his six foot five inch frame thin and almost gaunt. He'd been too clumsy to consider sports, but Ricardo had encouraged him to go to the gym regularly after Nate bailed on him, and as he'd matured it had paid off, allowing him to bulk up and fill out.
"You haven't changed a bit, Nate, not at all. It's great to see you again. It's been too long." Mark covered Nate's hand with his own and smiled fondly at him. He was surprised when a sudden rush of butterflies invaded his stomach. Nate still turned him on as much as he had twenty-five years ago. He hadn't expected that, not at all.
The receptionist cleared her throat and tapped a key card against the counter to get Mark's attention. Her eyes were narrowed, but she smiled as she held the card out to him. "You'll be in room 709, Mr Nelson. Carl can show you the way."
A bored-looking teenager appeared from behind them and reached for Mark's bag. Nate released Mark's arm and grabbed the bag himself, shaking his head at the teenager. "That won't be necessary, Carl. I'll show my friend to his room myself. We have a lot of catching up to do."
Mark nodded his thanks to them both before following Nate to the elevator. He pushed the button for the seventh floor, surreptitiously admiring Nate's reflection as he bent over to set Mark's bag on the floor. The car began to move, and Nate stepped closer, reaching out and brushing imaginary lint off Mark's shirt.
"I knew you would come. You never were able to resist coming for me."
Nate's hand brushed quickly over Mark's groin, and Mark jumped in surprise, caught off guard by the playful grope.
"It's been a long time. I've wondered how you've been, how you've changed. I've missed you." Mark bit his tongue, regretting the words the moment they left his mouth.
Nate grinned back up at him. "Well, I'm very glad you're here."
The doors opened and Nate led him down the hallway. When they reached the room, Nate pulled out a card from his wallet and used it to open Mark's door. "Passkey," he explained as Mark followed him in. Closing the door behind them, Nate held up Mark's bag. "Where do you want this?"
Mark grabbed the handle, unsettled by how nervous he felt about being alone with Nate. "I'll take it." He carried the bag over to the dresser, putting some much needed distance between himself and Nate. He took a deep breath before bending over the bag to unpack his things. His body remembered Nate, and embarrassingly, it still responded to him the way it had when they were together. He needed to get himself back under control before he did or said something stupid.
With his pulse pounding in his ears he didn't hear Nate approach, but a moment later he felt Nate's hands on his shoulders, pushing him down further over the dresser top. Stunned, he stood passive as Nate ground his solid erection against his ass, his hands sliding down Mark's back and grasping his hips.
"Damn, Mark, this brings back memories, seeing you bent over the furniture like this," Nate breathed into his ear, pushing a knee between Mark's thighs and spreading his legs.
Mark closed his eyes and slumped down over his bag, clutching the sides of the dresser. He was so turned on it hurt, memories of his time with Nate flooding his senses. "You have no idea how much I missed this, missed you. Missed having you inside me."
Nate's hand slid around to Mark's fly, opening his pants and closing on Mark's solid erection. "Yeah. You want that now, don't you? You want my dick up your ass, pounding you raw. That's what you came for, isn't it?"
Mark groaned, overwhelmed by the sensations of having Nate pressed against his back, his erection aching painfully as Nate fondled him with rough, hard tugs.
"Aw, fuck, Nate! Fuck!" One of Mark's hands joined Nate's inside his pants. Nate slid his hand down Mark's shaft and grabbed his balls, tugging them sharply before stepping back and smacking him on the ass. Mark stroked himself to the sounds of clinking of metal and rustling of fabric behind him.
"Oh, I intend to buddy. Don't you worry about that."
Mark's legs began to tremble with anticipation, and for an all too brief moment they were kids again, lovers again. With his eyes closed tight and the man he'd been in love with pressed against him, Mark could believe they were back in their apartment twenty-five years earlier, that nothing had changed.
But as his pants slid down around his thighs and the cool air from the hotel room washed over his bare ass, Mark forced his eyes open. Staring back at him from the mirror on top of the dresser, he faced his own reflection, with its gray hairs peppered into his close-cut black hair, the deep lines around his troubled brown eyes. A glint of light sparkled off the edge of Ricardo's watch, reminding Mark that he and Nate weren't kids anymore. They were no longer lovers—or even friends— at this point. They were strangers now, with nothing between them but bad memories.

Things you were wondering about Mathilde Watson:

Mathilde Watson is a work in progress.
I don’t much resemble the girl I was ten years ago.
And ten years from now I guarantee I’ll be someone else again.
And I’m okay with that. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
You see, I can’t stand to be bored, and I hate nothing more than looking in the mirror day after day and having the same old reflection stare back at me, frowning.
So I don’t look anymore.
I live, I laugh, I love and I write and I’m happy.
What else is there?

Thank you so much for joining me today, Mathilde! We really need to do this more often!

Meet William and Misha!

Good morning and welcome to Meet Me in St. Louis! Just kidding, of course. That movie took place a long time ago. During the World’s Fair, in fact. 1904. But that’s okay, as I’ve taken the Wayback Machine to just that time, in order to talk to two people—William Deming and Misha Rumiantseva. They’re the stars of the novel, My Fair Vampire, which releases October 8th from Silver Publishing. They’ve kindly consented to this interview with me.  We’re standing at the Fair even now, on the Pike, that mile long strip where the vendors are located. Goodness but it smells good.

Misha has his arm securely about William’s waist and he looks very protective of William. I think it’s sweet, personally. He stands just behind him, his head resting on William’s shoulder as they both regard me.

“Well, shall we begin, gentlemen?” I smile at them. “So, William, why don’t you tell me a little bit about yourself?”

“Good morning to you! Not much to tell with me, a simple boy from a large family of ten. Strict father of  course. We lived in the mountains, in Moab, in the southern part of the state.  I went away to university to study journalism at Brigham Young and then got a job in Salt Lake City, at the Utah Gazette. When the Fair was first announced, I prayed that my editor might send me on such a delicious assignment. Thank the heavens he did, for I have Misha in my life now, and forever.

Misha smiles at him, and they turn toward one another and exchange a kiss. Oh goodness, how I do love to see two people so very much in love!

“So you came to the Fair for your job and found love, how romantic! Misha, are you from around here, then?” His accent is foreign, but I can’t quite put my finger on what it is.

“Nyet,” he says, nuzzling gently at William’s neck. The blond blushes. Rather prettily, I must say. “I come from Russia. My aunt, she has a—how you say? A boarding house. She take in people. William come to stay, I meet him there.”

“Ah, a boarding house. There was a lot of that during the Fair, was there not?”

“Yes,” William replies. “The people fortunate enough to live in these magnificent houses took in boarders such as myself so we would be closer to the Fair.” I certainly chose the right one.” He kisses Misha again.  “The architecture is just splendid...all of these homes.

“I’d certainly love to see them, if that’s possible. Maybe you two could give me a tour of the boarding house—“
William glances at Misha, who shakes his head regretfully.

“I’m afraid that won’t be possible, Mrs. Hayes, I’m sorry,” William apologizes.

“Not a problem.” I smile at them. I hadn’t really expected it. I’m really grateful that they’ve taken this much time out of their busy schedules as it is.  I quickly glance at my notes. “I see the boarding house is within walking distance. Do you come to the Fair often? What are your favorite sights?”

"I came to the Fair a few times to write my story,” William says, “and blessedly it was within walking distance. As for favorite attractions, I'd have to say the Ferris Wheel. I didn't get to have quite the look around I wanted, though, I had something far more appealing in the cage with me at the time.” He grins at Misha, who smiles back at him. I want to squee just looking at them.

“I can imagine what, but surely you weren’t alone? I mean I read those cars hold up to like sixty people. How… that is…” I’m trying to be delicate here. “How frisky could you possibly get with witnesses?”

“Luckily the ride operator was kind enough to take a small donation to let us pass into the cage by ourselves. Splendid man.

I sigh. How romantic is that? Alone on the huge Ferris Wheel? “I understand there are many different kinds of food to be found at the Fair, some of them never seen before, as well as food from all around the world? Did you have any favorite foods?”

Misha makes a sound which almost seems to be a snort. “I did not eat… food at the Fair,” he says. I love his accent, it’s really hot. I look at William inquisitively.

“I must admit, of all the offerings which I was fortunate to be able to sample, I liked the hamburger the most. So delicious and so easy to hold! Though the waffle cones were very good, too. Such innovation!” He waxes enthusiastic, and I can understand why. The invention of the hamburger and the ice cream cone were important landmarks in American cuisine!

“Oh, before I forget, wasn’t there some sort of trouble at the Fair? Someone was killed, isn’t that true?”
Misha and William exchange glances.

“We must go,” Misha says abruptly. He takes a step backward, pulling William with him.

“Oh, really? Right now?” I cannot seem to hide my disappointment. I’d barely started with my questions on the murder. Why did they feel the need to leave right now?

"We must go...thank you for your time,” William says.

Misha smiles and suddenly I see—But no, I must be mistaken. I have an overactive imagination, I tell myself with a laugh, even as the two young men melt into the crowd around us.

Everyone knows there’s no such thing as vampires. Right?

Well, that’s it for me. I think I’ll walk around the Fair for a little bit, but I’ll be back!

Until next time, take care!
