Super Trooper #15 (3.1)

Cleaning hadn’t taken very long—selecting something appropriate from his wardrobe for tonight had consumed far more of his time. He had waffled longer over what color to select than anything else, and was dissatisfied with everything he found in his closet. He wanted to strike just the right balance. Not too formal and not too casual. Something that made him look good but not overtly seductive. Finally he decided on a pale peach polo shirt and khaki slacks. He laid his choices out on the bed for later, in case he ran late, then dressed quickly to meet his family.

They lived in a quiet residential area of Tucker Falls, within walking distance of the school and a short drive from several parks. Chan’s mother taught at the school, and her husband, Baljiwan—Balji, for short—owned his own insurance agency. Between them they were able to afford a comfortable life for themselves and the children. Even before she’d married Balji, Chan’s mother had always made sure her son lacked for nothing, especially love. Nothing had changed when she remarried, except for having two parents who loved him instead of one. Balji had always treated Chan is if he were his own son, not just a stepson, even after the little ones were born. Chan had loved them from the minute he saw them, each and every one.

Chan parked in the street in front of the house and sauntered up the driveway toward the sidewalk. He could tell it was going to be a glorious day. Warm but not too warm. The sun was reaching toward its zenith, a warm orange glow in the sky. Unseen birds chirped merrily, as if to say all was right with the world. Could anything bad truly happen on such a day?

He reached the front door, but before he had a chance to knock, it was flung open with abandon by his brother. Kamal wore a wide grin, excitement mixed with impatience. He reached for Chan’s hand and tried to drag him inside. Chan didn’t argue and good-naturedly allowed his brother to lead him, pausing just long enough to close the door behind him.

“Laksha!  Madhu!  Chan’s here! C’mon, let’s go!” Kamal yelled, still dragging Chan along without pausing.

“Kamal! Mind your manners. Your brother has only just arrived. Let him catch his breath before you try to run off with him.” Chan’s mother emerged from the kitchen, drying her hands on a dish towel. She smiled at both her sons, even as she admonished the younger one. She threw the towel over one shoulder then held her arms out toward Chan.

Chan returned her embrace, once Kamal reluctantly released his hand. His mother’s cheeks glowed, and her dark eyes sparkled. Chan divined the cause when Balji appeared, also drying his hands. Even after all these years, his parents were still crazy about one another and did the household chores jointly.

Chan kissed his mother’s cheek, then turned toward his stepfather for another hug. His family was very open about showing their affection for one another, a trait which Chan greatly appreciated and emulated.

“You’re looking good,” Balji said before addressing his younger son. “Don’t yell that way, none of us is deaf. Besides, give your brother a chance to visit with us. The park isn’t going anywhere, is it?”

“No, but what if it rains?” the seven-year-old argued. “Then what? We should go now, while the weather is still good.”

“You always worry for nothing.” This was from Laksha, who had just joined them. Just eleven, she was already as tall as their mother, and blossoming into young womanhood. Chan knew it was only a matter of time until the boys began to flock about her, but at this age they were luckily still into video games, for the most part. “Besides, it’s just a park. No big deal.” She tousled Kamal’s hair as she spoke, and winked at Chan, out of her younger brother’s sight.

“Just a park? Just a park?” Kamal’s voice began to rise in indignation. “It’s more than that. It’s fried chicken too, remember, Laks? And Chan! We have Chan today!”

“You make it sound like he’s never here.” Laksha laughed. “You’re so silly.”

“Am not!” Kamal insisted. “And you don’t have to go if you don’t want to. Not like you play with us anyway!”

“Kamal!” Maa said in a stern voice. “You don’t talk to you sister like that. Apologize to Laksha right now. You know you don’t mean that.”

“Well,” the boy began, but at a look from their mother he backed down. “No, I want her to come, of course. But she shouldn’t make fun of me for wanting not to get rained on. Besides, she always has her nose in a book when we go to the park.”

“And what is wrong with that?” Balji interjected. “Reading is important. You like to read too, don’t you?” He swept the child up into his arms until they were at eye level with one another.”

“Yes, but not at the park.” Kamal was not about to be deterred in proving he was right.

Another country heard from.

Chan felt a tug at his pants leg and glanced down to find Madhu standing there, looking as though she’d just rolled out of bed. Perhaps she had. Little girls like her tended to take naps still. She gave him the sweetest smile and held her arms up. He lifted her up and hugged her tightly.

Wednesday Briefs: Super Trooper #12 (2.8)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Things are moving hot and fast for Chan and Evan! See what's up with them in this week's chapter of Super Trooper! Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's going on with them! Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

Super Trooper #12 (2.8)

In the back of his mind, Evan wondered when had he begun to consider Chan as more than a one-night stand? He barely knew the man, hadn’t exchanged more than a few words of conversation with him. Not to mention he’d pulled him over and almost cited him for speeding just that morning. And yet here he was hoping something long-term was happening between them?

Was this instinct or wishful thinking on Evan’s part? When he’d decided to go to Partners tonight, it had been just to satisfy an itch with some nameless faceless man. Maybe spend a little time with Roy, if he were there. But somehow everything had changed when he ran into Chan for the second time that day. Did Evan believe in Fate? He didn’t know for sure, but he didn’t exactly disbelieve in it either.

Deep deep down—so far down he was unwilling to admit it to anyone—Evan Rainsford was a romantic. A man who believed in forever love as well as happily ever after, even if he hadn’t found it for himself yet.  Wasn’t even sure if he ever would. Was it him, or the guys he’d dated? Or a combination of the two? Just because he tended to take charge of every man he was ever with didn’t mean he had a need for control, or that he was some kind of a cold bastard, as he’d heard behind his back, when they thought he couldn’t hear them. To him, being the dominant meant that he would care for his partner, take care of him and see to his needs. Didn’t mean he had the right to tell anyone what to do or not do. And so far he hadn’t found anyone who made him want to be that man.

Until now.

Chan felt so right it was scary. Evan felt a connection between them, something greater than the obvious physical tie which bound them at this moment. And he wasn’t about to let this feeling go without attempting to nurture it into something that had the potential to be amazing.

He prayed that Chan felt it too.

He fit perfectly inside of Chan’s tight heat. His lips meshed completely with Chan’s. He loved the way the other man gripped his hair and clung to him, as if he would never let go.

Evan wanted Chan so badly he could taste his own need. He wanted to fuck him firmly, yet gently. Hard, but not too hard. He set a driving rhythm, letting his instincts guide him. Chan quickly fell into step and matched his pace, snapping his hips in perfect unison with Evan’s thrusts, never flagging for an instant.

Evan reached between them to find Chan half hard again. He grasped Chan’s awakening cock and began to pump, feeling it swell at his touch. Pausing to take a breath, he murmured encouragement—“Come on, baby, you can do it”—and was rewarded with sensual moans from Chan, his erection filling Evan’s palm as it hardened.

“Oh yes, oh yes,” Chan moaned, adding a few words Evan couldn’t understand, just before he released into Evan’s touch, his entire body quivering under Evan’s ministrations.

Evan’s body glowed with the shared pleasure of Chan’s orgasm, even as he felt his own need and desire reach its inevitable peak, his balls drawing back in a sure sign that he was about to come. Faster now, harder. He claimed Chan’s lips once more, reveling in the taste of him even as he spent himself inside of Chan, coming long and hard and filling him with everything he had.

And when he had given it all, he still kissed him, not wanting to let go any sooner than necessary. How long had it been since he’d wanted to kiss someone like this? Had he ever wanted to?  Until at last, mindful of how heavy he must be lying like this on top of him, Evan eased next to Chan on the bed, breathing heavily. Nothing was spoken between them—everything had been said already.

* * * *
Several moments—or maybe more, for what was time at this moment—passed as Chan lay in a state of complete bliss. His mind and body were as one. Surely this was nirvana? All Chan knew was he’d never felt this way before. He could die a happy man now.

Not that he wanted to die. Far from it. But what of Evan? Had Evan experienced what Chan just had? He hadn’t disappointed him in some way, had he? Judging by the sounds he made when he came, Evan had seemed pleased.

Suddenly anxious, Chan rolled onto his side to face Evan, only to meet the other man’s warm gaze. Chan looked deep into those beautiful jade eyes and melted inside at what he saw. Nothing but tenderness there, no criticism, no censure. Releasing a small breath of gratitude, he gave Evan a shy smile.

Now what?

Chan wasn’t sure what proper etiquette was in this situation, as he’d never experienced anything quite like this before. With the other men he’d been with, once they’d had their fill of Chan, they’d told him to dress and go home before rolling over and going to sleep, leaving Chan humiliated and used. But this was his home. Evan certainly couldn’t tell him to leave. Not that he thought the trooper would.

But he didn’t want Evan to leave, either. Should he offer to let him stay the night? Was that asking too much? Did he want too much from a man he barely knew but sincerely wanted to know more of?

“Are you tired?” Chan asked softly, hoping that Evan didn’t want to roll over and fall asleep, hoping for a sign that the other man wasn’t done with him.

Please stay…

“No, you?” came the welcome reply. Evan traced Chan’s lips with one finger, smiling at him. Such a beautiful smile he had, too. Everything about him was beautiful.

Wednesday Briefs: Super Trooper #10 (2.6)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Evan has followed Chan to his apartment, still playing their game of the State Trooper and the speeder, and now they've taken the next step when Evan carries Chan into his bedroom! Chan has never brought anyone to his home before, and he can't wait for Evan to be inside him. See what's going on in this week's chapter of Super Trooper! Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them. Their links follow my tale!  Enjoy!

Super Trooper #10 (2.6)

This must be how a bride feels on her wedding day.

Chan was almost giddy with excitement, secure within the warmth of Evan’s strong arms. He couldn’t decide which fantasy appealed to him more—the wedding day scenario or the trooper and the speeder story. Then he decided it didn’t really matter, as long the end result was the same. He would just follow Evan’s lead and do as he instructed.

Chan had a full-sized bed, which he’d acquired second-hand when he moved into the apartment, one which was more than adequate for his needs. He’d never brought anyone he’d dated to his home before. His limited experience with men until now had been conducted in small motels, far off the beaten path and away from prying eyes.. He hadn’t disliked the sex he’d had but afterward he was always left feeling that something was missing. That there was something not quite right about what had happened—a feeling which was only enhanced when both of his partners lost interest in him shortly after he slept with them.

Something inside of him told him this time would be very different from those other occasions.
Within moments of entering his bedroom, Chan found himself lying flat on his bed, Evan prone on top of him. Enough light filtered in through the blinds on his window, which he kept slightly open, that he had a good view of Evan’s sexy face. Expecting Evan to tell him what he wanted him to do, he was pleasantly surprised when the trooper kissed him instead, over and over and over, as if he couldn’t get enough of Chan. A light stubble brushed against Chan’s cheeks but it was surprisingly soft, not scratchy. Like the man himself. Chan resisted the urge to purr, but moaned instead, deep inside his throat, a sound which was echoed by Evan.

Not sure what he should do with his hands, Chan waved them at indecisively at first, before he found the courage to reach for Evan. He hadn’t been told not to, so he deduced this must be permitted. Besides, he wanted to so badly, he was willing to take a chance on being wrong. He slid his fingers into the longer hair on top of the blond’s head, gripping him firmly as he arched into Evan’s touch. It would be impossible for the other man to miss the signs of Chan’s arousal as he rubbed against him. Just as he couldn’t mistake Evan’s own interest in him.

Up close like this, Evan smelled incredible. A familiar scent he couldn’t quite place. Maybe a touch of citrus? A little musk. And something that was probably Evan.  Also, Evan tasted better than any man he’d ever kissed. Chan felt as though he could lie in Evan’s arms and kiss him for hours, although, to be honest, he was hoping for more.

Evan obviously had the same idea. He released Chan’s lips after leaving a last lingering kiss. He traced Chan’s mouth with his tongue then began to lick along his jaw, up to his ear. He drew the earlobe into his mouth and sucked on it, sending tingles shooting through Chan. He relaxed his grip on Evan’s hair and slid his hands down toward his back, wishing he could feel flesh rather than material.

“Undress me,” Evan whispered hotly in Chan’s ear, as if reading his mind. “Undress me if you want me naked.”

Was that even a question? Of course he did.

With a sudden movement that took Chan’s breath away, Evan reversed their positions. Now Chan found himself sitting on top of the sexy trooper, looking down at him. And his desire for Evan was overcoming his normally shy nature. Feeling inexplicably emboldened, he reached for the buttons of Evan’s long sleeve shirt and began to release them, one by one, revealing pale flesh beneath. Once all the buttons were undone, he pushed back the material, baring Evan’s chest.

Acting on an urge he’d never felt before, he leaned down and took one of Evan’s pink nipples into his mouth and began to suckle. The response was instantaneous. Now Evan arched beneath him, his body vibrating.

“Yes,” he moaned. “Oh yes, just like that.”

Continuing to suckle, Chan reached for the other nipple and pincered it, producing more moans. Chan wanted to have more of this flesh, wanted to see that glorious body naked beneath him. Just as he’d been instructed to do, he turned his attention to divesting Evan of his clothing. He unlatched the huge silver belt buckle and pushed it back before pressing the palm of one hand against Evan’s crotch, enjoying the feel of the firm bulge there. He couldn’t help but lick his lips in anticipation as he lowered the zipper.

No underwear. Was that a sign or what?

Evan’s cock sprang out when released, and it was a beautiful sight to behold. Forgetting for a moment what he was meant to be doing, Chan leaned down and took the head into his mouth. It tasted as glorious as the rest of the man himself.

Wednesday Briefs: Super Trooper #7 (3.2)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Having accidentally run into each other at Partners, the gay bar in Tucker Falls, Evan and Chan end up having a drink together. Evan just doesn't take no for an answer, but Chan isn't exactly complaining either. What's going on with them? See for yourself in this week's chapter of Super Trooper. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them! Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

Super Trooper #7 (2.3)

“Chan. I’ll remember that.” Evan nodded.  His name was as exotic as the man himself. Their hands were warm together, comfortably so. It was with great reluctance that Evan finally withdrew his hand. “Are you from around here?”

“Oh yes, my parents were both born in this country, and so were their parents,” Chan quickly replied. “Don’t worry. We aren’t illegals, or anything.”

Evan understood his need to put that fact on the table, what with immigration being such a touchy issue nowadays, and what with Texas hosting so many immigrants, legal or otherwise. Still, he hadn’t wanted to put Chan on the defensive. “No, no, that’s not what I meant. I just meant here in Tucker Falls or somewhere else.”

Why was he pretending he didn’t already know the answer to that question? Hell, he’d just run the man’s license this morning and already had the address memorized. Or was he trying to seem less stalkerish by letting Chan tell him where he lived, assuming he wanted the trooper to even know?

“Oh, sorry.”

Damn, he was even more adorable when he blushed, his golden skin adopting a rosy glow.

“I grew up in Tucker Falls,” Chan said. “With my mother and stepfather, and my brothers and sister. I live in my own apartment now, a little ways outside of town. I was coming from there this morning, on my way to work when you…. When I….” His words trailed off.

When Evan pulled him over for speeding. Of course. That highway was the one most used by daily commuters to go in and out of Tucker Falls, the largest city in the area until you got to San Antonio. It was also the route where Evan wrote the most speeding tickets. Except for this one, of course.

Chan cleared his throat and began again. “I appreciate you did not give me a ticket this morning,” he said, as if reading Evan’s mind. “I assure you I do not usually go over the speed limit, I am a very law abiding citizen, but this morning I was running late. I stopped to help Mrs. Feinstein, and before I knew it, the time was slipping away from me and I was afraid I would be late for work.”

Punctuality was an admirable trait, one Evan could appreciate. He was very punctual himself, to the point of being early, and tended to be critical of those who chose to arrive anywhere at the last possible moment. He’d been accused of being very anal about his sense of time, but he ignored such comments, the way he ignored most of the other things people said about what they didn’t understand. He’d developed a thick skin in order to endure a great deal of suffering when he was younger.

“As long as it doesn’t happen again,” Evan said, suppressing a grin.

Chan quickly nodded his agreement.

“Unless, of course, you’re hoping I’ll pull you over again…”
* * * *
Chan was caught by surprise at the trooper’s comment, momentarily at a loss for words. While he had no desire to exceed the speed limit for any reason, the thought of seeing Evan again—in full official uniform and in all his dominating glory—was a very tempting one. One that would provide a great deal of food for “thought” later. Just imagining them role playing this morning’s scenario—the state trooper and the speeder—but with a far different outcome was an extreme turn-on to him.

Before he could articulate any sort of response with his recalcitrant tongue, Evan smiled, and Chan’s heart beat even faster at the sight.

“I know you wouldn’t do that. Except maybe in private.”

Chan was shocked. It was almost as if Evan had read his mind. Or were they really just on the same wavelength? He reached for his glass of ale and took a long hard drink to dampen his suddenly dry throat.

“You are right,” he finally got out. “Most definitely in private.”

Evan made no immediate reply. They continued to drink in a companionable silence. Well, relatively silent. There were people all around them, going about their lives. Chatting and laughing and having a good time. But it was almost as if they didn’t exist. For right now, there was only Chan and Evan, in this private world they were building by an unspoken mutual consent.

They finished their drinks, and Chan was thinking maybe he should offer to buy more, when suddenly Evan leaned across the table toward him. Chan stopped breathing, all too aware of the other man’s proximity. Was he going to kiss him? Right here and now? Did he want him to?

Was that even a serious question? Hell yes.

But apparently he’d only moved closer in order for Chan to hear him better. “Meet me in the parking lot,” he said in that deep tone of complete control Chan was growing to love.

Without another word, Evan rose, pushed back his chair, and made his way across the bar toward the door, never looking back. As if he knew what Chan would do… as if he trusted him to know what to do…

Chan rose without hesitation and followed in Evan’s wake.

Wednesday Briefs: Super Trooper #5 (2.1)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Evan has gone to Partners to find some release from his obsession, aka the hot speeder, and meets up with his friends Roy and Dustin, and their friends Marshall and Lee. Imagine Evan's surprise when he runs into the very man he's trying to forget! Chan hasn't stopped thinking of the trooper all day. After he goes to his little brother's birthday party, he decides to go somewhere and unwind. Surprise, surprise! See what's going on in this week's chapter of Super Trooper! Don't forget to look for the other Briefers and see what's up with them! Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

Super Trooper #5 (2.1)

Although Chan wasn’t as late to work as he’d feared he would be, even a few minutes was anathema to him. When he walked through the door, expecting to be called out for what he’d done, nobody even seemed to notice he was running behind—or if they did notice, they said nothing to him about it. But he was more than aware of his own tardiness—as well as the very sexy reason for it—so he threw himself into his work, took on extra tasks to help lighten his co-workers’ loads,  and didn’t take his full lunch in order to make up for lost time. He couldn’t afford to stay late, not today. He loved his family, and he wouldn’t do anything to upset either his mother or his little brother, especially on such an important day.

Despite how hard he worked, though, Chandrahas found his mind reverting far too often to the tall blond trooper who’d pulled him over. The one he’d been far too willing to drop to his knees for, although luckily it hadn’t come to that. What was wrong with him? This man was a stranger to him. And certainly on a level far above him, being a member of law enforcement. Not to mention, he was probably super straight. Chan’s experience with romance was very limited. He’d only been in two relationships, and neither one had lasted very long due to a major lack of compatibility. He’d made no attempt to introduce either young man to his family. Not that they would have belittled his choice of a partner, or looked down on him because he was gay. His mother and her husband were very open-minded, having lived in the United States all their lives, and would have been open to such a meeting. So why hadn’t he done so?  Because… well, because he didn’t find either of them suitable for such an honor.

Would he be willing to take the trooper home to meet them?

He pushed the thought aside as being ridiculous and focused on the figures on the computer screen before him instead.

After work, he picked up the birthday cake his mother had ordered from the nearby bakery, which had been specially decorated to resemble Kamal’s beloved pet guinea pig, and hurried to the home of his mother and stepfather. Chan loved spending time with his family, especially his three siblings. His own father had died when Chan was just a baby. After a few years of being alone, his mother had found love again and remarried, then had three more children with her new husband—Chan took being their older brother very seriously. He’d been ten when Laksha was born. She was eleven now and very interested in books, especially those about science. Someday, she said, she would work in the Tucker Falls Library, and would help the children who went there to love and understand science and math. Kamal, the birthday boy, was a very happy-go-lucky young man, who loved music and playing games with his friends, a group of boys of varying backgrounds and ethnicities who all lived nearby. He also loved animals and wanted to be a veterinarian when he grew up. Or maybe a famous singer.  Madhubala, whom everyone called Madhu, was two and a half and as sweet as her name—in Hindu, it meant a girl as sweet as honey. She wasn’t very talkative, but she had a sunny disposition, and loved to trail her siblings around the house, content to simply be near them. Everyone loved her to death and spoiled her as often as possible. Chan couldn’t have asked for a better family.

It was still early when Chan bade his family good night, gave his brother a special birthday hug, and promised he’d come back soon to spend time with them. He would take them to the park, and they would have a splendid picnic lunch and have lots of fun. He told his parents, Maa and Pita, good-bye and headed to his car, intending to drive straight home.

But Chan was restless. And the idea of returning to his empty apartment, to his private sanctuary he was so proud of, held little interest at the moment. He wasn’t hungry… at least not for food… so going out to eat didn’t appeal to him. Maybe he would get a drink. Something to calm his nerves. Something to help him sleep better.

But where to go? Driving down Main Street, he remembered a place he’d been taken to by one of the two men he’d dated. What was its name? It was a decent enough place, nothing fancy or too expensive. Its main attraction was that most of the patrons were gay and nobody thought anything of it. Oh yes, Partners. How could he forget a name such as that?

Partners it would be. He would have a drink, soak up a little atmosphere, listen to a little music. Maybe watch the men on the dance floor. Chan didn’t really dance himself but he did like watching other people do it. He wasn’t overly fond of country western music, but living in Texas, it was something you got used to. He could live with that. Or maybe he’d get lucky and some other music would be playing.

He was slightly put off by the number of vehicles in the parking lot of Partners, but then realized he could blend into the crowd more easily, not stand out. He parked his car in the far reaches of the lot and made his way inside.

Country music. Oh well. He liked to watch line dancing, no problem. He got a bottle of lite beer and headed toward the dance floor. Searching for an empty table, he was shocked to find himself staring at the very man who’d been on his mind all day.

Chan’s heart skipped a beat when he realized the trooper was staring right back at him.

Wednesday Briefs: Super Trooper #1 (1.1)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

As you may remember from next week, I finished In Pieces and am now ready to start another tale! The new story is called Super Trooper. I'll leave you to it. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers. Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

Super Trooper #1 (1.1)

Sometimes being a nice guy doesn’t pay.

Chandrahas released a soft sigh, audible only to himself, and managed a small smile for his elderly neighbor. She was a nice lady, and helping her was not an imposition. Normally. But today it might mean the difference between being on time and being late for work. And that was something Chandrahas Basu could not afford to be. Late, that is.

“I appreciate this so much,” Mrs. Feinstein was saying, as she trailed him to the dumpster which sat at the back of their apartments. “Sometimes it gets hard for me, you know. Trying to get down the back steps without falling, holding on to a heavy plastic bag. My daughter’s always telling me I should wait for her to take out the trash, but I hate to impose…”

Chandrahas nodded, barely listening, but inwardly he was counting the seconds without trying to be rude. Not to mention this was the same story the elderly lady had told him the last time he helped her. Lifting the lid, he hefted her in her bag then turned back to her. He patiently waited until she paused for breath, then took the opportunity to tell her her she was completely welcome and he wished her a blessed day but he had to leave now as he headed toward his car in its numbered space.

“You too!” she called after him cheerily.

He knew he would have to hurry if he was going to make the twenty minute drive to Tucker Falls with any hope of punctuality. Chandrahas took his position as assistant manager of the Tucker Falls Savings & Loan very seriously. He didn’t wish to set a bad example for his employees by showing up late. Luckily, his drive was mostly highway. And though he hated to do it, he knew what he had to do.

Time to put the pedal to the metal.

The morning commute had thinned out by the time he reached the highway and merged into what little traffic there was. With a little maneuvering, and pushing the speed a little, he should be at work with a few minutes to spare.

About that time, his phone began to ring. Now, seriously?

He knew only one person who would call him this early. His mother. She lived in Tucker Falls, along with her second husband and their three adorable children, and he saw them all on a regular basis. What could she be calling about? He knew better than to answer his phone while driving. The laws in Texas were strict about that sort of behavior. But it was his mother, what was a guy to do?

Be quick about it, what else?

Chandrahas cautiously raised his phone to his ear, darting a nervous glance into his mirrors. Not a state trooper in sight. Good.  “Is something wrong, maa?”

“Must something be wrong for a mother to call her son?” came the familiar voice. “Do you only wish to hear from me in case of emergency? Perhaps I should hang up and wait for calamity to befall and then call you back?”

He tried to keep the impatience from his voice. If he had the time, and was in a better position to do so, he would have traded banter with her. But this was neither the time nor the place. “Of course not,” he attempted to placate her. “I’m on my way to work. Can I call you later? On my lunch hour, perhaps?”

“No, no, I understand, Chan,” she replied, assuming her pseudo-martyr voice.  He hated when she did that. Normally his mother was the most understanding and rational of women, but there were times when she turned into a melodramatic heroine straight out of one of the Bollywood films she loved. Her only saving grace at such times was that she never broke into either song or dance. “I just wanted to remind you about the cake for the party. You said you would pick it up after work. But if this is a bad time…”

Damn, so she had a legitimate reason for calling, one which had temporarily slipped his mind. His half-brother, Kamal, was turning seven, and he had promised to celebrate with them tonight. And yes, he’d said he would pick up the cake from the bakery near where he worked on his way.

He stepped on the gas a little more, casting quick glances at the dashboard clock. He really had to hurry. “I haven’t forgotten,” he assured her, which was semi-true. He would have remembered before it was too late. He was not one to forget important dates or errands. “I will be there, I promise. Love to all, see you tonight.” He quickly clicked off and set his phone onto the passenger seat rather than wrestle it back into his pocket. Not long now and he would be able to leave the highway and…
What’s that? He glanced in the rearview mirror in dismay. Red flashing lights on a marked Crown Victoria gave it away. Shit. State Trooper.

Being a very obedient and law-abiding citizen, Chandrahas could do nothing other than pull over into the breakdown lane and wait. What was he supposed to do? License and registration, right? With any luck, the trooper would give him a warning and send him on his way. Or, if he felt the need to write a ticket, hopefully he’d do it very quickly. Maybe he’d be just a little late. Maybe.

Chandrahas’ heart sank when the vehicle pulled off the highway directly in front of him, slanting across his path. Perhaps in anticipation that he might run, which was absurd. He would never do such a thing. As the trooper approached, Chan’s nerves broke, a combination of stress and lack of his usual morning tea. Without thinking, he rolled down his window as the tall man in the familiar brown uniform approached.

“Can we make this quick, please?’ he snapped at the trooper.
