Book Review: Demon Slayer, Vol 14 by Koyoharu Gotouge

Demon Slayer, Vol 14

Author: Koyoharu Gotouge

Publisher: Viz Media

American release date: June 2, 2020

Format/Genre/Length: Paperback/Fantasy Manga/192 pages

Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★

Tanjiro is finding it difficult to cut the thick neck of the demon he is battling, and the effects of Nezuko’s blood seem to have worn off. A sixth demon appears, one who insists on referring to the demon slayers as villains! Genya believes the newcomer to have been summoned by the demon they are fighting, and this one is the demon of joy and of pleasure. The new demon berates Tanjiro and Genya for picking on the small demon. He seems to grow stronger the harder they fight him.

The demon Gyokko is searching the village for the chief and comes across Haganezuka, who is engrossed in sharpening a blade. Gyokko becomes enraged when he cannot gain the swordsmith’s attention, too focused on what he is doing. Meanwhile, Tokito is sure his life is about to come to an end and reflects on his childhood while Kotetsu racks his brain for some way of helping the Hashira. When Haganezuka gives Tokito the blade he was sharpening, his strength and purpose are renewed, and so the battle with Gyokko continues!

Tanjiro’s battle with the upper rank demon is not going as well as he’d like when a sudden appearance by Kanroji, the love Hashira, saves the day. She is deeply offended when the demon refers to her as a tramp! But does she have what it takes to defeat him?

This volume of Demon Slayer contains a lot of back story for Hashira and demons alike. I find that interesting, as it gives more depth to the characters. Even the demons have redeeming qualities (well, most of them).  I’m hoping if they defeat this level 4 demon, they’ll be able to get some of his blood to use to find the cure for Nezuko!

Another great volume, looking forward to the next one!

Book Review: Bleach, Vol 54 by Tite Kubo

Bleach, Vol 54

Author: Tite Kubo

Publisher: Viz Media

American release date: January 1, 2013

Format/Genre/Length: Paperback/Manga/Supernatural/192 pages

Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★

The battle with the Fullbrings continues. Ginjo baits Ichigo, to get him to react, but Uryu warns him to be cautious, that Ginjo probably knows all the same attacks that Ichigo does.  As they battle, each of the Fullbrings remembers how they came into their own powers, and how much they owe Ginjo. Byakuya has a similar problem to Ichigo’s in his fight with Tsukishima, in that he knows all of Kuchiki’s moves. So how to handle that?

As the various members of the Soul Society end their battles, they gather together. But one battle is still ongoing, and Yukio claims he cannot close that particular arena, due to a promise made to Ginjo, and that it cannot be broken. So now they wait to see who will emerge the victor. Meanwhile, within this particular box, Ginjo is trying to sow the seeds of doubt within Ichigo, in relation to his being a deputy Soul Reaper and what it actually means. Will Ichigo rise to the bait and believe him?

Finally, we bring the Fullbring arc to a close. I’ve been wanting this for some time. Is it surprising that the right side won? It would be surprising if they didn’t. Although seeing the backstories of the Fullbring was interesting, I won’t miss them. I’m more curious to find out what Ichigo has to say to the Soul Society, now that he has his powers back. Will it be anything they want to hear? What will his role be now?

Looking forward to the next volume!

See what's going on with the boys in this week's chapter of Rose and Thorne 6. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them. Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

Rose and Thorne 6 #19 (4.5)

“I will,” I promised which I followed with a contented purr as Ethan’s hand slid along my growing length. “After we’re done.”

“Done with what?” he returned just before he brushed his lips across my cheek, his breath oh so warm against my flesh, his grip tightening just a little.

My breath hitched before I replied, “You know what,” in the most seductive voice I could muster.

“I might be able to guess,” he said in a breathy whisper just before he unexpectedly slipped to his knees and took me into his mouth. Whatever rejoinder I’d been about to make was instantly forgotten, thinking having become entirely optional. The most I could produce at that moment was a throaty moan, but I sure gave that all I had to give.

As Ethan helped me step out of my pants, never releasing his hold on me, my fingers found purchase in his beautiful blond hair. Once my clothes were out of the way, he reached around me with one free hand and began to stroke my bare ass. Damn, this was so very glorious, to be here with Ethan like this. And to think this man was mine… all mine.

Without warning, Ethan suddenly began to rise. I let out a moan of pure disappointment. Where did he think he was going? Talk about bad timing.

“Shh, shh,” he soothed with a gentle shush just before he lapped his tongue across my hyper-sensitive lips. “Just moving to the bed so you can be more comfortable.”

That was Ethan all over, always concerned with my welfare. Under such caring circumstances, how could I object to a brief intermission? I couldn’t. Besides, that pause would give me a chance to take a breath and regain control of myself. I’d been far too close to my climax for my taste and had been loath to end my pleasure so quickly. Besides, then we would be in a much better position for the second part of my plans to commence—namely to have Ethan fuck the ever-loving shit out of me. No offense to his sister, but having her in the house had not been very beneficial to either one of our libidos, not to mention her having a curious and mobile child who might pop up unexpectedly when we least expected it… not exactly a recipe for romance in anyone’s cookbook. If that sounds like I’m complaining about her being there, I’m not, just for the record. I was really glad she and little Alex came to visit.

I settled myself in the middle of the bed which, while not entirely conducive to a good night’s sleep, was more than adequate to our current needs. Ethan, taking advantage of this small break in the action, was quickly shucking out of his own clothes. I laced my fingers behind my head and simply enjoyed the show. Have I ever mentioned how sexy and beautiful Ethan Thorne is? Surely I have, I know it. Maybe a hundred times, if not more. Well, he is. Even after five years, I found him to be the most desirable man I’d ever seen, and I was amazed all over again that he was with someone like me.

No, not someone like me. Exactly me. Vincenzo Delarosa. Aka the luckiest man who ever was.

Now completely naked and entirely delectable, Ethan dropped onto the bed between my spread legs. He began to stroke my inner thighs with a light touch of his fingers. My legs were relatively hairless. I’d recently begun shaving them on a regular basis. Or I should say Ethan had—he had a  masterful touch with a straight razor that was a definite turn-on. I told myself it was easier to keep my limbs shaven in case I was called upon to don a pair of panty hose in the course of some investigation, but the truth was, I liked to watch Ethan do it, and I liked the way it felt. Who knew?

Ethan leaned down and kissed one of my knees. I’d always been self-conscious of my body, and considered my knees to be plain ugly. But Ethan thought every inch of me was sexy, and didn’t hesitate to remind me of that a million times, so who was I to argue with the man?

“What strong legs you have,” he murmured, and I couldn’t help but smile.

“The better to hold on to you, my dear,” I quipped.

“I like the way you put that,” he said. Before I could think of another witticism, he had taken me into his mouth once more and I was content to simply exist in the moment, savoring his touch.

I arched up into his touch, gripping the sheets tightly, my toes curling as he tongued me with masterful precision. His mouth was my haven, my safe place, and my paradise, and I had never felt so loved in my life. I could have stayed there forever, even though that was not a physical possibility, but metaphorically.

Sometimes when we made love, I heard music play in the back of my mind, a melodious accompaniment to our love. Sometimes classical, sometimes soft rock. Relaxing and yet stimulating at the same time. This time was no exception. As Ethan continued to suck the life out of me through my dick, the music began to swell as well, but then took an unexpectedly jarring turn.  As of alarm bells buzzing a sinister warning.

What the hell?

I was jarred from my pleasant reverie by the sound of banging on the bedroom door. At the same moment, Ethan sprang up and reached for my hand.

“Vinnie, that’s the fire alarm.”

Oh shit, now what?

GENRE:   Magical realism

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
As the music dies, the magician Celwyn is mortally wounded.  His darker, immortal brother Pelaez brings him back, barely, with his magic. The party of protagonists travel on the Nautilus to the Cape Verde Islands and the healer of immortals.  During the journey, Professor Kang and Bartholomew can not tell if Pelaez will keep his brother alive.  Captain Nemo is ready to evict Pelaez forcibly, and keeping Celwyn alive is the only thing that restrains him.
After Celwyn is saved, the healer requests payment for his services. This sends the adventurers to the catacombs in Capuchin where their experience is one they will not forget. Before it is over, several of the protagonists question why it seems everyone from warlocks and vampires to witches, seem to be congregating in their world. Before it is over, some of them become surprising allies, and a few of their allies turn against them.
In part II, work on the new flying machine begins in earnest bringing attention from the Mafioso and a cherub-like warlock called Duncan.  After a final battle with Duncan, the flying machine is destroyed and everyone at their compound is murdered by one of their own.
EXCERPT):
Captain Nemo had joined them, watching the undersea scene as they passed by dozens more buildings.  The glow of the Nautilus’ lamps illuminated the ruins, then dissipated and the inky water enveloped everything.  They slowed in front of a procession of grand marble stairs leading upward and a mirroring set of steps led downward to an abyss below.
“The main temple,” Captain Nemo told them as an enormous ivory building materialized out of the dark water.  “I’m not sure what that is.”
Kang tried his best to see further into the water, but failed.  “I would love to use your diving apparatus to explore this, Captain.”
From beside him, Verne licked his lips and said, “What is all of this?”
Nemo hesitated and looked at the author as though deciding if he should tell him.
Pelaez had joined them, without using the door or walking across the room.  He just appeared.  After enjoying Bartholomew’s gasp, he had no reservations in describing the scene.  “It has to be Atlantis.  Nothing else would be this big, or advanced.”  He leaned toward the glass.  “My, my.  Just as I imagined it.”  He examined the landscape another moment.  “Though, I do not see a great deal of destruction, considering.”
The Professor stared.  He didn’t see any bones from human corpses, just from animals.  How odd.  Pelaez had referred to the sudden disappearance of Atlantis, one minute a thriving metropolis of culture and wonderment, the next, gone, as if it never existed.  Where were the people?
Thousands of bubbles erupted from under the ship as they passed over another underground steam vent, this one much larger than the others.  As the shadow of the submarine covered the vent, Bartholomew stared into the roiling water and said, “No destruction at all.  Do you know what happened here, Captain?”
Nemo’s glance at the author probably included a wish that Celwyn was healthy enough to put a block on what Verne saw and heard.  Pelaez might be able to do something similar, but he couldn’t be trusted.
With a shrug, Nemo said, “There are many theories.  Plato wrote a great deal about Atlantis, as did Mikonisis.”
“Yet, this looks like neither one,” Bartholomew speculated.  “There are differences in what we see here compared to the long-standing descriptions from Plato and others.”  He pointed to the building in front of them. “Such as the sculptures depicted on the buildings.  I wonder …. that last steam vent was huge.  As wide as this ship.  I … I think we’re passing over an active volcanic cap ….”
“Perhaps.  The field of ruins here is enormous.  Doesn’t it seem like this city just sank beneath the waves?”  the Professor asked.  “However, I see no volcanic ash or sludge on the buildings.  Why?  The lava would have hardened when it met the water.”
As they talked, the Nautilus had gradually ascended as the seafloor rose, and the reflection from streaks of brighter water painted their faces.  Bartholomew pointed to the buildings.  “Is it simple? That the sea levels rose, and covered everything?”
Pelaez had watched the last of the buildings and houses go by with a special kind of light behind his disturbing eyes.  He asked a question intended to make things even more puzzling.
“Gentlemen, what if they built the city under water in the first place?”
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Early work was horror and suspense, later work morphed into a combination of magical realism, mystery and adventure painted with a horrific element as needed.
I’m one of those writers who doesn’t plan ahead, no outlines, no clue, and I sometimes write myself into a corner. Atmospheric music in the background helps. Black by Pearl Jam especially.
More information is available at LouKemp.com. I'd love to hear from you and what you think of Celwyn, Bartholomew, and Professor Xiau Kang.
You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
A fishing pole and a surf fishing champion.
When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
The beginning is a continuation of the plot and what ever dire straight I’d placed them in, or they fell into at the end of the previous book.  An example is at the end of book 1 when Celwyn is mortally wounded, and the book ends as he is carried into the Nautilus where he stops breathing.  Book 2, starts when his ill-tempered immortal brother Pelaez comes out of the shadows to kneel beside him and save him…for now.
If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?
Robin Williams dressed up as Mrs. Doubtfire.  She was no-nonsense, and sit up straight, and lovable, like me.
Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?
Chucky the clown.  Why? because I refuse to see the movies with him so he can remain a caricature, not real. Someone should drop kick him.
Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?
Yes, Captain Nemo (he is real as far as I can tell).  His persona is reserved, mysterious, and valiant all at the same time.  With Celwyn and company’s antics, he also displays his patience.
Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?
Hmmm.  Actually, the opposite.  The movies and futuristic portrayals of a doomed world just do not fit, do not have hope.  Saving a fated world is a cliché. At the same time, climate change is playing out on the news in real time, in real floods and droughts as predicted.  I’d hope someone would finish the story for those who think it isn’t their problem.
Saturday is Horror Day #56 - Zombieland
 Zombieland
Something has gone horribly wrong, and the United States of America has become Zombieland. Life will never be the same again. Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) is just trying to get back to his family in Ohio, traveling the dangerous highways, trying to avoid being eaten. He has certain rules that he lives by to ensure his continued existence. In his experience, you ignore these rules at your own peril. Such as Always Check the Back Seat. And Wear Seat belts.  He meets up with another human unexpectedly, Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), who is on his way to Florida. The two decide to travel together, at least for now.
Tallahassee is a little odd, to say the least, especially when it comes to his obsessive search for Hostess
Twinkies, which thus far has been pretty pointless. While Columbus is a stickler for his rules, he is also a compassionate guy. When the two run across two sisters, Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), he can't help but feel sorry for them. Little Rock was attacked and is about to turn into a zombie. Rather than suffer such a fate, she implores Wichita to end it all, but she finds she can't and asks Tallahassee and Columbus for help. That does not turn out well for the guys, and the girls manage to scam them out of their vehicle and most of their possessions.
The two groups cross paths again and travel together for a while. The girls reveal they are headed toward an amusement park, where they spent some very happy times before. Columbus finds himself more and more attracted to Wichita, but finds himself foiled every time he makes a move. And just when he thinks things are going well, the girls ditch them again.
Can Columbus accept this ending, or will he pursue the girl of his dreams through a dangerous zombie-filled country?
This movie is a mix of humor and horror, with a decided emphasis on comedy. The zombies are pretty blood-curdling, and I sure wouldn't want to be trapped with these things as they are not the slow lumbering figures of early films. They move along far too quickly for my taste, even though they are not articulate. One of the funniest scenes involves Bill Murray playing himself.
All in all, this was a fun watch. I would recommend it. I'll give it 4 Stars.
Wednesday Briefs: Rose and Thorne 6 #18 (4.4)
 Good morning and Happy Hump Day ! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.
Vinnie and Ethan have enjoyed their time with Uncle Benny but it's getting late and everyone's tired. But maybe Vinnie isn't as tired as he seems. What does he have in mind? See what's up in this week's chapter of Rose and Thorne. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them! Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!
Rose and Thorne 6 #18 (4.4)
All good things must come to an end—or at least I’ve found that to be the case in my experience with life so far—and so it was with our evening with Benny. Luckily we didn’t have to get up too early the next day, as our flight to Atlanta didn’t leave until sometime late morning. But when Benny began to yawn, despite his best efforts to hide it, we realized we should probably call it a night. Okay, maybe I yawned a bit myself, although I wasn’t about to admit to being tired. I didn’t have to, though. Ethan knew me too well to even listen to my protestations that I was wide awake and fine. He also vetoed my suggestion of more coffee with a chuckle and a shake of his pretty head. I knew better than to argue with that.
After a quick check of Benny’s room, for safety’s sake, we bid him good night.
“Good night guys,” he said with a pronounced wink. “Oh, and just so you know, I sleep like a log. Dead to the world. Can’t hear a thing once I’m out.” He winked again as he closed his door behind us.
Did he mean what I thought he did? Or was I reading too much into his words? Ethan made no comment so I shrugged it off as me having a dirty mind.
We made a final inspection of the suite, made sure all was well then headed to our room.  I let Ethan enter the room first, not because I thought there was anything to fear but because I enjoyed the view from behind too much not to appreciate it every chance I got. So sue me. He has a fine ass, what can I say?
Admiring that fine ass was giving me other ideas. Maybe I wasn’t as tired as I thought I was. I softly closed the door behind me, then turned to find Ethan giving me a bemused glance as he finished checking the room.
“What?” I feigned innocence. Probably not too well, I admit.
“I see that gleam in your eye, even from here. Don’t even think about it.”
“Wow, what good eyes you have said Little Red Riding Hood to the wolf. And from all the way across the room.” I kept my own eyes trained on Ethan as I pulled my shirt over my head and dropped it onto the chair on my side of the bed.
“That’s what big eyes you have,” Ethan corrected me with a knowing smile. He reached for our suitcase, probably intending to pull out his sleep shirt and shorts, but I had other ideas. I grabbed for it first and succeeded in hefting it to the floor. He’d have to come around the bed to access it now, and I could easily intercept his sleep intentions and change them to something more agreeable.
“Vinnie, what are you up to?” His words were suspicious but his tone was anything but as he sashayed his way toward me, his supple hips beckoning to me with every step he took. His mouth might say no but his body was screaming yes and I could feel mine responding to the overt invitation.
“If you can’t tell that, I must be doing something wrong,” I quipped as I toed my shoes off and kicked them out of the way. Then I slowly and seductively unzipped my pants and slid them down my legs to the floor where I could step out of them.
“Looks like little Vinnie isn’t as tired as big Vinnie,” Ethan jested, to my chagrin.
“Don’t call him that. He’s not little.” Even I could hear how defensive I sounded. I knew Ethan meant no harm, he always said that. But sometimes I just took his banter the wrong way, especially when I was trying to get him to make love to me.
Yes, I have a somewhat fragile ego. I admit it.
“You should be getting your rest,” Ethan admonished me, but his words were belied by his actions as he stepped closer to me and wrapped his hands around my hardening cock. Mixed message much?
Saturday is Horror Day #55 - Grave Encounters 2,Hell House LLC 2: The Abaddon Hotel
 Grave Encounters 2
Aspiring student filmmaker, Alex Wright (Richard Harmond) is directing his first horror film, with the help of his friends and fellow students. As horror movie aficionados, they hold differing opinions on the film Grave Encounters. Alex disdains it, giving it only 1 star out of 4. But something happens to not only change his mind, but now he is obsessed with the film and he's convinced that it was more than just a movie - it really happened.
Alex claims that the original cast of the film can't be found - because they all died. When he receives what appears to be a casting call for a music video by the same director who directed Grave Encounters, Alex flies to Los Angeles to talk to him and ends up being thrown off the set. Undeterred, he believes he has located the film's star, Sean Rogerson, who played Lance Preston, and goes to his home where he and his friends are entertained by Rogerson's strange mother. She tells them Sean will be home soon and they can wait in his bedroom for him, but the bedroom appears not to have been lived in for a long time.
Convinced he is on the right track, Alex locates what he believes to be the site of the original film, an abandoned psychiatric hospital in Canada, and off they go. Pulling up in front of the house, they are shooed off the premises by a security guard who tells them the premises aren't safe because of asbestos contamination, but they don't buy that story. What else can they do but return in the dead of night and break in.
Grave Encounters 2 begins with the premise that the first film was just that, a film, and the film students are reality. This is also a found footage film, taken by the students themselves.  The sequel starts a little slowly as we meet Alex and his friends and explore his aspirations of being a major film maker. But once they get into the hospital, the pace picks up and the creepiness begins.  I think it's mandatory to watch the first film before this one (although common sense would suggest the same thing) if for no other reason than because you'll pick up on things more easily, and you'll recognize the various locations inside the hospital.  There are some definite twists here, and some decent scares, as well as a high creepiness quotient. I did like this film and I'll give it 4 Stars.
Hell House LLC 2: The Abaddon Hotel
Eight years have passed since the horror that took place at the Abaddon Hotel one fateful Halloween night, and there are still no answers as to what actually happened. The hotel is still abandoned, and the town of Abaddon would be happy if people would just leave the mystery and the hotel alone. But people are curious, and solving this mystery would obviously be a journalist's dream come true.
Jessica Fox (Jillian Geurts) is just such a journalist. She's received an anonymous tip that convinces her
the answers to what happened lie within the hotel and she has to be the person to find them. She assembles a team, including lone original survivor Mitchell Cavanaugh (Vasile Flutur) and self-proclaimed supernatural expert Brock Davies (Kyle Ingleman) to break into the hotel and investigate.
Other people have attempted to find answers at the hotel prior to this adventure, and some of these people have simply disappeared, leaving behind strange footage of what they saw. Undeterred, the group break into the hotel through the back, split up, and begin to search.
The sequel to Hell House LLC is a combination of found footage as well as an interview from a local news program involving some of the interested parties. It starts a little bit slow as they establish some of what has been going on in the last couple of year prior to this. One of the interviewees is a representative of the town of Abaddon who insists the whole thing is a hoax and these people are just money hungry. The footage from other failed attempts is chilling, and once the group gets into the hotel, the action picks up. Watch carefully or you'll miss things. The creepy mannequins are still there, and just as creepy as ever, and beware of jump scares.
I did like this sequel and feel it was worth watching. I'll give it 3.5-4 Stars. There is another one, will watch that later.
