Scandal's Bride
by Pamela Gibson

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical (Regency)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Marry in haste…

Lady Gwendolyn Pettigrew longs to be a mother, but refuses to marry the lecherous old fool her father has found for her. When her best friend convinces her to consider her husband’s younger brother as a suitable candidate, Gwen agrees to a marriage of convenience, hoping against hope that her dream of becoming a mother will have a chance.

The Hon. John Montague, a penniless younger son, is handsome, witty, and thrilled that a woman with a dowry has agreed to wed him. Best of all she’s a fiercely independent bluestocking, a woman who won’t want to bother with a family. Because John has a shocking secret. He’s vowed never to bring a child into the world, a child who, like his own mother, might carry the strain of madness.

As secrets unfold, tension grows, threatening the fragile bonds they’ve forged.  Worse, someone wants them to abandon their home and leave Yorkshire, and they’ll stop at nothing to make it happen.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“May I come in?”
A frisson of excitement made every nerve ending tingle in anticipation. Did he want to consummate their marriage tonight? She looked down at her serviceable white cotton nightgown with its high neck and long sleeves. She’d put it on because it was heavy and warm. If she’d known John would be joining her in her bed, she would have left her hair loose and worn the pretty gown Miranda had given her as a wedding gift.
Oh Lord, oh Lord.
She let out the breath she didn’t even realize she was holding. Pulling the covers up to her chin, she called out, “Come in.”
He poked his head through the door. His coat and waistcoat were off, and his cravat was in his hand. He looked mussed and adorable.
“I want to apologize for my behavior. I shouldn’t have run off like I did. I was feeling . . . ill-tempered . . . and didn’t want to subject you to my mood. I promise not to do it again.”
She peeked over the top of her covers. “You are forgiven. But I must say I was worried about you. Where did you go?”
“I rode toward the village, turned around, and came back. I gave my horse a good gallop and then a rub down in the stable.”
“I see.” She paused, not knowing what else to say.
He smiled. “We’ll play whist tomorrow night. I know you enjoy the game.”
“I shall look forward to it.”
“Good night, Gwen.” He closed the door firmly, and his footsteps echoed down the hall.
Why were her eyes filling with tears?
1)You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
That’s easy. The person would be my husband and the object would be a small sailboat. When we first started dating, he often took me aboard his boat (no engine), and we’d sail from the Southern California Coast thirty-six miles to Santa Catalina Island. He knew how to navigate by looking at the stars and had all kinds of useful knowledge, like how to rig the tiller for hands-free sailing, so the occupants of the boat could do other things. If the island had food, water, and a means to make a shelter, it would become our home base. But we’d know we could leave any time and go exploring.  I actually used some of this in a scene in another of my historicals, called Shadow of the Fox. The hero helps the heroine escape an unwanted arranged marriage and they set off by sea.
3) Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scene using them: hammer, saucer, traffic lights.
“It’s a timing device. It works like a miniature traffic light. Push a button when someone wants to speak and the light is green. After two minutes, it turns yellow. One minute later it’s red. The bloke speaking has three minutes to address the committee.”
                “You want to get us killed? These are angry people. They’ll want to give us an earful for ten or fifteen minutes each.”
                 He grinned and pulled out a hammer. “It’ll make their eyes as big as saucers when they see this gavel. They’ll keep their complaints to three minutes. You’ll see.”
4) What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?
I’m going to switch this question a bit to talk about the fantasy of romance versus the reality. When my husband took an early retirement, he convinced me to do the same. We bought a two-person cruising boat and set off. My friends pictured a romantic vacation, lying on a deck, cocktail in hand, letting the breeze ruffle my hair as we passed by beautiful islands or anchored in a private cove. It was not. It was hard work, trekking miles to a grocery store when in a port, hauling laundry to marina washing machines, cooking in cramped quarters, and when underway—fighting the elements, hoping you’d make your next anchorage without puking. Real romance, for us, is tucked up together on a comfy couch, each reading our respective books, listening to soft jazz; sitting on the bed, watching over the other when sick; a comforting hug when one of us has had a bad day. I could go on, but you get the idea. It’s all the little things you do for each other that says, “I love you.”
5) When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
Looking back at the books I’ve written, I’d have to say I begin with a character. For example, in my first book, A Kiss of Cabernet, my character is a young vineyard manager who works on an estate with an absentee owner. What does she want, what’s in her way, how will she overcome these obstacles? What character traits should she have that will hinder or help her along the way. In this case the hero came second and was developed in much the same way, except I made him her opposite.  I also gave him a serious problem to solve which became part of his motivation and one of the overall themes of the book. I’m a pantser, so the plot is a vague outline in my head of where to begin and where to end. Everything else is free flow.
9) Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?
Decades ago I wrote my first novel. It was the story of a gumball, sitting on the top of his world, contemplating his fate as he fell slowly through the layers of other gumballs, heading straight to the chute that would take him to oblivion. It was an allegory about dying. I thought it quite clever. An agent thought it quite clever. An editor at a big publishing house thought it quite clever. Then the marketing team took a look at it and said, “No!” They said it couldn’t be marketed. End of story. The manuscript is languishing at the bottom of my dead manuscript box. Someday, I’ll get it out.
Wednesday Briefs: In Pieces #60 (15.1)
Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.
The boys have arrived in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and first order of business is a meeting with their manager, Marge. She texts them to meet her at a Mexican buffet not far from their motel. Ryan is a little nervous, wondering what Marge is like. She seems nice on the phone, but appearances can be deceiving. See what's up in this week's chapter of In Pieces. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them! Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!
In Pieces #60 (15.1)
The restaurant wasn’t very far at all from the motel, probably one of the reasons why Salvation’s manager had chosen to meet there. Even Keanu had to admit it wasn’t a bad walk, but the admission had come after a certain amount of cajoling from Deacon. The interior was dark and cool, and the décor reminded Ryan of a Mexican cantina. Colorful serapes and sombreros decorated the walls, and piñatas hung from the ceiling.  Two large buffet tables formed an L shape in the middle of the room. The most enticing aromas were coming from them. Ryan’s mouth began to water in anticipation.
“Over here, guys!” a brassy voice called out from the far side of the restaurant.
“There’s Marge. C’mon, I’ll introduce you.” Holding Ryan’s hand, Ben led him toward the rather large woman who was vigorously waving at them. Even from this distance, her enthusiasm was contagious, as was her large smile. They had barely reached the table at which she sat when she enveloped Ben in a large bear hug, lifting him from his feet, forcing Ryan to relinquish his hand.
“Hi honey,” she greeted him as she set him back on his feet with a kiss on his cheek. She turned to each of the members of Salvation in turn and accorded them the same treatment. Ryan noticed not one of them seemed surprised by her actions, or taken aback in any way.  Once she’d greeted them all, she turned to Ryan, who felt suddenly shy.
“This has to be our writer. Ben, you sure picked a looker.” She winked at Ryan, whose face suddenly flamed. Before he had a chance to react, she’d hugged him tightly and kissed his cheek. “Nice to meet you, Ryan!
Ryan couldn’t place the scent which clung to Marge, but he found it comforting and soothing, much like her touch.  “Nice to meet you too, Marge.”
Marge turned to Deacon and Keanu. “Mind pushing that table over here so we can sit together?” she asked. Moments later, she got her wish, and they all seated themselves.
Right after that, a waiter bustled up with a tray full of water glasses, which he distributed to them. “Hi, my name is Julio, and I’ll be your server today. Are you here for the buffet or would you like to look at the menu?” he asked.
“Buffet,” everyone said in unison, then laughed.
“What about drinks? We have a special on margaritas, if you’re interested.”
The general consensus was that everyone was interested.
“Excellent.” Julio nodded. “I’ll have those to you in just a few minutes. Help yourself to the buffet. Plates and utensils are at the end of each table. If you need anything else, please let me know.” He withdrew, presumably in the direction of the bar.
“Let’s get some food and then we can gab,” Marge said, and no one argued with her.
Ryan and Ben hung back a little, letting the others get in line first. Marge stood beside them, also waiting. She gave Ryan a speculative look. “So, what do you think of them so far?”
“I think they’re amazing,” Ryan blurted out. “They’re all fantastic, and their music, it’s…. it’s awesome. Especially Ben. He has an incredible voice…”
Ryan let his voice trail away, wondering if he’d said too much, but somehow when it came to Ben, he couldn’t help himself. As if he was making up for lost time between them. But he honestly believed in the band, and he found it hard to contain his enthusiasm. He noticed Marge glance between him and Ben. Was it his imagination or was Ben blushing too?
“These guys are my favorite clients,” she confided. “They are a great band and they’re gonna go places, I just know it. This is only the start of something big, you’ll see.”
“I think you’re right,” Ryan said. “Salvation’s headed right to the top.”
“You might be a little prejudiced,” Ben said shyly. Ryan wondered if maybe he should exercise a little common sense and skip the PDAs for now, to keep from embarrassing Ben. But then he felt Ben’s arm wind possessively around his waist and that plan went right out the window.
“You have no idea how excited Ben was when you agreed to take the job,” Marge said. “I’ve never seen him smile so much. I knew then you must be special to him.”
Marge’s words went straight to Ryan’s heart. Everything was working out so perfectly. What could possibly go wrong now they were together?
“C’mon, let’s grab some grub.” Marge headed to one of the buffet tables.
 Ben didn’t move immediately, though. He leaned in to Ryan and whispered, “She’s right, I’ve never been so happy, Ryan. I love you so much.” He kissed Ryan’s cheek gently. “Let’s see if this tastes half as good as it smells.”  Ryan’s head was spinning as they headed to the buffet and lined up behind Marge.
to be continued
Now go visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them!
Book Review: Blue Morning, Vol 5 by Shoko Hidaka
Blue Morning, Vol 5
Author: Shoko Hidaka
Publisher: SuBLime Publishing
American release date: October 14, 2014
Format/Genre/Length: Paperback/Manga/Yaoi/200 pages
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★
Katsuragi has changed, and so have the plans he worked on so carefully. Thrown out the window by his unexpected feelings for Akihito. Katsuragi has always been in control, has always known what he wanted, and what he was willing to do in order to get it. But nothing is as cut and dried as he once believed it to be.
Akihito and Katsuragi are attending an evening ball at the Marquise Moriyama’s residence, despite Katsuragi’s misgivings. Akihito notices a great number of reporters hanging around outside the gate. As they arrive, he kisses Katsuragi and tells him he trusts him, to Katsuragi’s shock. Will this confession prove to be the former butler’s undoing? Once inside the Moriyama manor, Akihito insists again that Katsuragi walk beside him, not behind him. Yanking Katsuragi into an unused room of the manor, Akihito affirms his feelings, and tells him that just knowing Katsuragi loves him, he can get through anything. Katsuragi promises to tell him everything.
Also in attendance at the ball is Akihito’s father’s half-brother, Naotsugu. Katsuragi’s plan is to have Naotsugu take on the Kuze title. Having met him, though, Akihito is not so sure this is a good idea, and he fears he may have to go against Katsuragi’s wishes. Meanwhile, Katsuragi is intent on protecting Akihito, even if that means lying to him… or about him.
Meanwhile, Akihito’s friend Soichiro Ishizaki goes to his father and begs him not to abandon Akihito, even though it was at his father’s direction that they ever became friends. His father tells him if that’s the case to come with him to the Moriyama estate.
Katsuragi demands and receives a private audience with Marquise Moriyama, outlining his plans for Naotsugu’s success to the Kuze house, which will be temporary as the man only has a few years to live, after which he wants Moriyama to help with something that is unprecedented, so that Akihito can regain the Kuze title after Naotsugu’s death.
It’s obvious to me that these two men love each other greatly, but it’s also obvious that until they stop working behind each other’s backs and work together, nothing will be accomplished. That is the only way in which they will succeed and be able to walk together, side by side, as equals. The plot is only becoming more complicated, with the introduction of Akihito’s half-uncle, and the confirmation of the seeds Katsuragi has sown concerning Akihito’s “illness”. Some of Katsuragi’s plans are coming to fruition, including the divorce of the Marquise Moriyama by his wife, which is the reason why the reporters are hovering outside the manor. They are still keeping secrets from each other, though, and not being entirely honest. That has got to give. Ishizaki is really Akihito’s friend, and while he doesn’t approve of his relationship with Katsuragi, not because he is a man but because he doesn’t entirely trust him, he wants Akihito to be happy. And he feels Katsuragi may actually love Akihito.
So much intrigue, where will it end? Another brilliant volume, looking forward to the next one, although with a little apprehension.
ESCAPE INTO THE WORLD OF HORSES, STEAMY SEX AND BLUE WESTERN SKY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Cari didn’t know why she felt compelled to return to the clearing that night. Silver Wolf had never met her there after dark. Still, she hoped he might be there. When she reached the edge of the clearing, her breath caught in her throat at the sight of him, standing motionlessly in the waist-deep pool of water. Silver Wolf. Her dream warrior!  Moonlight shone upon him, turning the glistening water on his bare chest to a silver sheen. He looked like a magnificent creature of the wild.

She spoke in a whisper. “You’re here…I was hoping you’d come.”

At the sound of her voice, heat surged through him. He knew a driving urge to take her in his arms, but he remained stoically where he was, allowing the cool waters not only to temper his desire, but also to shield his state of undress from her.

“Why were you hoping to see me, Little Snow?”

Their eyes met as she started toward him. “I’ve been coming here every night since we got back, because I had to tell you that I’m sorry for what happened between you and my mother. She was wrong, Silver Wolf, very wrong.”

“Are you so sure?” His pride held him immobile, though he really wanted to hold her and kiss her, and never let her go.

“I’m sure. You would never hurt me.”

Cari knew she had to prove to him how important he was to her. Ignoring the chill of the water, she waded out toward him. Her need to touch him again was foremost in her mind. She looked up at him in the moonlight.

“I love you, Silver Wolf.”

Her words erased all the pain and doubts he’d been feeling. Giving in to his need, he swept her up in his arms and crushed her to him. “Little Snow…” he said her name in a groan of passion as his mouth descended to claim hers.

Book Review: Bleach, Vol 4 by Tite Kubo

Bleach, Vol 4

Author: Tite Kubo
Publisher: Viz Media
American release date: December 7, 2004
Format/Genre/Length: Paperback/Manga/Supernatural/200 pages
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★

Ichigo is less than impressed with his family’s obsession with a phony TV spiritualist by the name of Don Kanonji. They not only watch his show with enthusiasm but they gladly cross themselves as he does and give his famous cry of “Bo-ha-ha-ha!” To Ichigo’s dismay, the live TV show is coming to his town for an emergency live broadcast special. Of course, everyone wants to go, except for Ichigo. But he ends up going anyway.

The show is broadcasting from in front of an old hospital. Ichigo wonders to Rukio why, if there’s a ghost there, the Soul Reapers haven’t taken care of it by now. She explains to him about jibaku, which are fixed location ghosts that can’t be detected and won’t show themselves… unless someone invades their territory! Just then they hear a wail from inside the building!

A ghost appears, chained to the building. Rukia explains that he isn’t a Hollow yet, because his hole isn’t completely formed. As long as his hole isn’t irritated, they can safely leave him until after the show ends and then perform a konso on him. Until Don Kanonji makes a grand entrance and does the unthinkable and creates a suddenly dangerous situation for everyone involved!

Ichigo tries to stop him, to the complete embarrassment of his friends and family,  but he and Rukia find themselves grabbed by security. Ichigo needs to go soul reaper, but without Rukia’s help, he can’t do that. Help comes in an unexpected form and Ichigo races toward Kanonji. To his surprise, Kanonji can see him in his soul reaper form, but mistakes him for the spirit of a dead fan. Will Don Kanonji be a help or a hindrance to Ichigo as he tries to deal with the newly-formed Hollow before he kills someone?

Back at school, Ichigo and his friends are called on the carpet for what occurred on live TV, but quick thinking by Rukia gets them out of trouble, at least for now. Don Kanonji shows up unexpectedly at Ichigo’s house, to his dismay, even as he wondered how he got his address? The answer quickly shows herself, along with the rice dumplings the spiritualist bribed her with. Luckily relief comes in the form of a Hollow alert, although Rukia’s phone seems to be acting strangely recently. They go on calls only to find no Hollow there. Will this be more of the same?

After a few false alarms, they head to another sighting, only to meet with an oddly dressed young man who is contemptuous of their efforts. Wait, he can see them? Who is this and why does he hat soul reapers?

The fourth volume of Bleach is a riot. Don Kanonji is a priceless character. You just gotta love him. And there is more to him than what appears on the surface. I love him as much in the manga as in the anime. Kisuke’s appearance at the broadcast was both providential and adorable. I love how Ichigo refers to him as Mr. Hat-and-clogs. I love how Ichigo’s friends are unaware that he makes good grades and are taken aback that he’s 18th in the class. Two people are tied for first rank, Kunieda and someone named Uryu Ishida. Remember that name!

I am thoroughly enjoying reading this as much as watching it. This series is a lot of fun, looking forward to the next volume!

Book Review: A Princess in Theory by Alyssa Cole

A Princess in Theory (Reluctant Royals #1)

Author: Alyssa Cole
Publisher: Avon
American release date: February 27, 2018
Format/Genre/Length: Paperback/Contemporary Romance/384 pages
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★

Naledi has received scam emails before, but this one takes the cake! Someone claiming to be his assistant thinks it’s funny to tell Naledi she is the betrothed of an African prince and to please send her personal information in order to verify her identity. As if! Orphaned at a young age, Naledi (Ledi to her friends) has had to become a strong and independent woman. Life is hard enough, what with her post-graduate studies in epidemiology, and staying afloat by waiting tables at the university, without someone trying to sell her false dreams!  Add to that a supervisor who keeps throwing off all of his grunt work onto her, instead of anyone else or even himself, and a best friend who at her best is unreliable and at her worst can be a drunken critical mess.

Thabiso is the prince of the African nation of Thesolo. It’s bad enough that people in his country are suffering from a mysterious illness that he is helpless to do anything about, but there is a major corporation seeking to make inroads into his nation, and Thabiso isn’t sure what they want will be in Thesolo’s best interests. But people of high rank are clamoring for him to sign off on this deal, and he feels pressured to do so. If that’s not enough, he’s had his assistant, Likotsi, search for his long-lost betrothed, a girl he knew in their childhood when they became engaged, but whose parents whisked her away so that she disappeared from his life. The good news is that Likotsi has found her, living under another name in New York City. The bad news is she is not responding to Likotski’s emails. What is a prince to do but go to New York himself to bring her back?

Thabiso shows up at Ledi’s place of work, intending to let her know who he is and that she needs to come back with him, but when she unexpectedly mistakes him for the new server, he sees an opportunity for her to get to know him for himself, not as a prince. So he doesn’t correct her, answers to the name Jamal, and takes the other man’s place. Who knew working in a restaurant could be so difficult, or that a royal prince could be so inept?

He can only stay so long in the States before he must return to Thesolo and deal with things there, including his parents, who are clamoring for him to get married and are unaware of his hunt for his betrothed. He’s determined more than ever, now that he has found her again, that Ledi shall be his bride. But will he have enough time to win her heart, so that she loves him for who he is? Somewhere along the line, as Likotsi reminds him, he has to tell her the truth about himself, or all will be for naught.

Ledi finds Jamal to be very sexy, if somewhat inadequate to his job. But she patiently shows him what to do, and she finds herself growing more and more attracted to him. She tells herself she has no time for men like him, her life is already complicated enough. But the more she sees him, the more he worms his way into her heart. No good will come of this, she knows, as she waits for the other shoe to drop… and drop it does, blowing her mind and threatening to destroy her world. Not to mention, most importantly,  he has lied to her. She’d rather stay safe and alone in her sterile academic world than risk her heart… wouldn’t she?

A Princess in Theory is the first book in Alyssa Cole’s Reluctant Royals series. It was recommended to me by my daughter, and I fell in love with it right away. Ledi hasn’t had an easy life, but she takes what comes and doesn’t complain. She is a very strong, very likeable heroine. I rooted for her from the beginning.

On the other hand, Thabiso is a handsome and sexy but somewhat sheltered, entitled prince, who doesn’t really understand a lot about what the real world is like until he meets Ledi. His original idea is to get her to go back to Thesolo with him, to do her duty and finish what was begun so many years before.  But he quickly discovers that won’t be as easy as he expected, since he is lying about who he is. Every day he falls for her more and more, and we watch him grow as a person and as a man as he tries to figure out how to handle the situation he finds himself in. You can’t help but hope he succeeds, and that these two will receive the fairy tale ending all princes and princesses deserve.

I love Alyssa Cole’s writing, she draws memorable characters and situations, and this story is both romantic and sensual. I know there are at least two more books in this series and I look forward to reading them. If you enjoy a good romance with an ending to die for, give this book a try. You won’t be sorry you did.

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Salvation is in Lake Charles, but they have a free night. Once they meet with their manager, that is. A little relaxation by the pool seems to be the order of the day. See what's up with the guys in this week's chapter of In Pieces. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them. Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

In Pieces #59 (14.4)

“See anything interesting?” Ben asked, shading his eyes with his free hand as he squinted up at the siblings. Ryan thought the walk had done them good. They both seemed pretty happy and relaxed, even after the long drive to Lake Charles.

“We saw a lot of places to eat, a couple of bars,” Abby said. “Some interesting shops too. If we find time to go shopping.”

“We have all night,” Ben reminded her. “After we meet with Marge, we can do whatever we like. Let’s see what we feel like doing then, okay?”

“Sounds like a plan,” Aiden said. Ryan honestly didn’t care what they did. A night with Ben sounded like heaven.

“Don’t forget you promised to get Ryan a Speedo,” Abby said with a mischievous grin. Ryan felt his cheeks heat. He pretended he didn’t hear her, but Aiden chuckled.

“That’s up to Ryan,” was all Ben said, even as he squeezed Ryan’s hand.

“Told you we’d find them at the pool,” Keanu commented.  Thank goodness for a change of subject.

Ryan thought Deacon and Keanu seemed very relaxed too, but for entirely different reasons, he knew.

“Hey guys,” Keanu greeted them. “You get the room keys yet?”

“Right here.” Ben patted his pocket.

“Don’t tell me you’re in a hurry to put your clothes away?” Abby asked.

“Isn’t that what you were doing in the back of the van?” Aiden added. “Getting out of your clothes?”

Keanu laughed while Deacon shook his head and rolled his eyes. “You’re all incorrigible. Maybe a guy would like to take a hot shower, or brush his teeth, or something?”

“Or something,” Keanu echoed. Ryan got the feeling that the or something was probably the primary reason for Keanu’s haste, not the shower.

Hearing a sudden ding, Ryan pulled out his phone, wondering if Cassie had texted him, but there was nothing there. He glanced toward Ben, who already held his phone, reading the screen.

“All that’s gotta wait for now, guys. Marge just texted. She’s waiting for us at a Mexican buffet that’s not too far from here. Dinner’s on her.”

“Best kind of meal there is,” Keanu quipped. Ryan could understand how he felt. When you didn’t have a lot of money, you appreciated being taken out to eat any chance you got.

“I think I remember seeing that place,” Abby said. “We can just walk there from here. It’s not far at all.”

“Sounds like a lot of exertion,” Keanu started to complain, but Deacon interrupted smoothly.

“After all that exertion you and I just expended, I think we can handle a short walk, lover boy.”

Ryan had to work to hide his smile, but he noticed Aiden and Abby made no effort to conceal their grins. Neither did Deacon.

“If I eat too much, are you going to carry me back?” Keanu faced Deacon, his hands on his hips, head cocked.

“If you eat that much, you’ll need to walk it off anyway, won’t you?” He slid an arm around Keanu then turned toward the twins. “Lead on, MacDuff. We’ll be right behind you.” Ryan noticed Deacon’s hand snake down Keanu’s back until it rested on his ass, at which point Keanu stopped protesting. Deacon sure knew how to handle his man.

Time to go. Ryan unfolded himself from the lounge chair then held his hand toward Ben and helped him up, taking advantage of their proximity to kiss him. “Think we look okay?” he asked Ben. He wanted to make a good first impression on Marge.

“You look amazing,” was Ben’s reply. “Will I do, you think?”

“I think you’re beautiful,” Ryan replied.

“What about me, Abs?” Aiden suddenly queried his sister in a high falsetto, one hand pressed against his chest, the other against his forehead dramatically. “What do you think about me?”

“You? I think you’re hopeless,” Abby deadpanned, reducing them all to helpless laughter. “But you’re my hopeless and I wouldn’t trade you for anything,” she added, taking his arm. “I wonder if this place serves drinks? I could go for a margarita.”

“You know something? That does sound good,” Aiden said.

Ryan had to agree with him.  Ben reached for Ryan’s hand, twining their fingers, as they followed closely behind the others.
