Saturday is Horror Day #49 - The Unholy (2021), V/H/S 94

 The Unholy (2021)

Gerry Feen (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is a journalist who's lucky to receive any assignments at all, considering the colossal blunder which basically destroyed his career. He's in no position to argue when he's sent to cover a story about a cow in rural Massachusetts. The story proves to be bogus, to Feen's dismay. But he's determined to write something, so when he discovers a strange doll buried in the hollow at the base of a tree, he smashes it and then photographs it in an attempt to make something out of nothing. Little does he realize what he has done.

While standing near the tree, Fenn encounters a strange young woman who appears to be in a trance. She

kneels before the tree, as if mesmerized by it, and speaks strange words he doesn't understand. When he tries to help her, she faints and he carries her to the church, to seek the aid of the priest, Father Hagan (William Sadler). It turns out the girl is his niece Alice (Cricket Brown). But Hagan tells Fenn he couldn't have heard her speak, as she is deaf and mute. But something strange happens when she comes to - she can hear and speak! And she says it's because she saw the Virgin Mary!

Realizing this is a much better story, Fenn persuades his editor that he needs to stay on it as he grows close to the young woman. Strange things begin to happen, including Alice curing a young boy who couldn't walk previously. People are drawn to the church, seeking out the young miracle worker, and a media frenzy ensues. But she trusts Fenn, who gains sole access to her. Of course the church steps in in the form of Bishop Gyles (Cary Elwes) as well as Monsignor Delgarde (Diogo Morgado), who is playing devil's advocate before the church will declare Banfield, Massachusetts to be a shrine.

But all is not as it appears to be, as Fenn delves into the story more deeply, and he begins to realize that appearances can be deceiving. But can he save the people who are so willing to believe that they can't recognize evil when it's staring them in the face?

This isn't necessarily a new trope, a demonic entity posing as a holy one. I love Jeffrey Dean Morgan in everything he does and he does well here as the disgraced journalist who sees what needs to be done and is willing to do what is right, no matter the cost. Cricket Brown is sufficiently naive and compelling as Alice, who means well but doesn't realize she is being used. This is a Sam Raimi film, so of course production values are high. But even so, I've seen this played out better. I wouldn't say don't watch it, Morgan is worth the price of admission alone. Just don't look for The Exorcist. I'll give this film 3 Stars.

V/H/S 94

A SWAT team searches a warehouse in what they think is a drug bust, but nothing makes sense... from the various corpses with gouged-out eyes to the static-filled television sets.

A news reporter and her cameraman are sent on location to cover a story concerning a local cryptid

known as the Rat Man, who supposedly lives in the storm drains. Holly, the reporter, interviews a local man just outside the storm drain, just before her boss tells her to take the story into the drain. Holly is reluctant before she agrees in order to stay out of the creepy man's line of sight. She and Jeff, the cameraman, make their way inside as they begin to discover strange things, including a man who must be the Rat Man they're looking for. But then they discover more than they bargained for.

A funeral home is requested to video record the wake of a loved one throughout the night. A young woman named Hailey is assigned the task of keeping vigil while the wake takes place. She chooses to read in order to pass the time. However, she begins to hear strange noises and calls her boss to suggest maybe the deceased isn't quite deceased, but her boss assures her that is not the case, and the condition of the body precludes any chance of his being alive. A storm rages outside, with occasional power outages, which unnerve Hailey. A man shows up for the wake, stands before the casket and speaks in Hungarian before making his departure. During the next power outage, Hailey is dismayed to find the coffin not only has been knocked down, but it is now open and empty.

A mad scientist is performing experiments on test subjects - willing or unwilling - intent on fusing flesh and metal. The SWAT team arrives and mayhem ensues as they shoot what they perceive as monsters. One soldier recognizes a young woman as a girl reported missing who is being sought and he urges leniency. But his commanding officer is adamant that she not live either.

An extremist military group with sedition on its mind have a compound somewhere in Detroit, Michigan. They intend to purge evil from America. But these men are not the simple garden variety of crazy. They are holding a vampire prisoner, and they keep siphoning his blood  which becomes explosive when exposed to sunlight. Oh the plans that they make!

Once again we have a collection of found VHS footage, seemingly separate stories, but are they? The tale which binds these together is that of the SWAT team, but watch carefully as the others have their ties.

These stories are definitely original and very creative, and most decidedly gory. This series is not for the faint at heart. I think my favorite two stories were Storm Drain, about the lady reporter and the Rat Man, which has an unexpected twist and ending, and The Subject, with the crazy mad scientist who loves his metal prosthetics. I have enjoyed this whole series, and this latest entry is no exception. I hope they continue to make these, but I couldn't find any information either way. Well worth the watch, I give this one 4 Stars.

The Questions
1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have? I’m with my wife, Kate, and my guitar because I love Kate and wouldn’t want to ever be without her, the inspiration and muse of my life and writing and the planter of seeds regarding all of the dark fiction I write to include The Unholy. My guitar comes in as the thing I’d bring along because I like ending the day singing boleros, love songs, to the one I’m with—Kate.
2)      Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you? You know, I’m not generally into musicals, but if I had to pick one it might be West Side Story as it explores ethnic tensions that are also dramatized within The Unholy as the propagators of white misogynistic religion prey on innocent and vulnerable souls, one fierce woman out to set things right.
3)      Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scenario using them:  insurance, owed, talk Insurance as in fire insurance for the soul as is proferred by the dark side of religion can never be counted on for much except to set up the vulnerable party to always feel they are owed an explanation as to why the mumbo jumbo of eccelesiastical talk never came through in the way it was supposed to!
4)      What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other? Kate and I enjoy fine dining and listening to soft jazz recordings done on the Blue Note label as we discuss our reads and the mind bending twists and turns of the characters.
5)      When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot? A gut-wrenching scene kicks the story into gear and then scene after scene flashes onto the white screen of my mind as each dramatization impresses upon me the truth that story emerges not so much from characterization or plot as from the archetypal images and symbols that animate the characters and plot
6)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you? To play me, you’d have to resurrect from the dead Algernon Blackwood, the great gothic horror master, and ask him how to and who could interpret in modern terms and context one who lives in a way remarkably similar to his character, Dr. John Silence.
7)      Who’s your favorite horror villain and why? My favorite horror villain is H.P. Lovecraft because even as a writer he is the ultimate villain in his stories, the one who creates the scenarios that terrorize and transmogrify!
8)      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it? Yes…my  wife Kate is my historical crush since my dreams have repeatedly narrated that she and I have live through many passionate lives together, the one preceding this one having taken place in turn-of-the twentieth century Victorian New York.
9)      Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it? Actually, I struggled with whether the world was ready to receive the reality of dark side of religion as depicted in The Unholy. Now that The Unholy has been unleashed and is largely being received with great fervor, I’m getting ready to reveal in the next year Dark Goddess---a novel about love and whether bad love is better than no love. I’m not sure the cosmos is ready for the answer, but it’s about ready to be jettisoned forth with the same phantasmagoric vigor as The Unholy!

EXCERPT:

“Help me? Help yourself! Face what is yours to face,” Elizabeth hissed. She yanked the door open then forced it to slam behind her.

Claire stood still for a moment, feeling as if a tornado had swept through the room. Elizabeth’s demand had left her shaken. She drew a deep breath, then went to her desk and picked up her tea, noticing her trembling hands.

Turning toward the window, Claire saw a muscular orderly accompanying Elizabeth to the locked ward at the far end of the hospital compound. A flock of crows circled high overhead, seeming to follow the two receding figures. As they arrived at the outer doors of the locked unit, the orderly reached for his keys. The crows circled while the two crossed the threshold of the unit, Elizabeth suddenly pausing, turning, and looking outside, her gaze riveted on the flock of birds.

All but two flew off, disappearing into the piƱon-covered hills. The two that remained came to rest on the red brick wall adjacent to the locked unit, their black eyes boring into Elizabeth. She looked panicked then enraged and, shaking a finger at the creatures, yelled something. Her frantic gestures told Claire that she was screeching curses to ward off evil.

Claire took a step back from the window, from the impact of Elizabeth’s rage.

The orderly grabbed Elizabeth roughly by the arm and pulled her inside.

The crows waited, watched, then flew away.

EXCERPT:

Lightning streaked across a midnight dark sky, making the neck hairs of a five-year-old girl crouched beneath a cluster of twenty-foot pines in the Turquoise Mountains of Aztlan stand on end. The long wavy strands of her auburn mane floated outward with the static charge. It felt as though the world was about to end.

Seconds later, lightning struck a lone tree nearby and a crash of thunder shook the ground. Her body rocked back and forth, trembling with terror. She lost her footing, sandstone crumbling beneath her feet, and then regained it; still, she did not feel safe. There appeared to be reddish eyes watching from behind scrub oaks and mountain pines, scanning her every movement and watching her quick breaths. Then everything became silent.

The girl leaned against the trunk of the nearest tree. The night air wrapped its frigid arms tightly around her, and she wondered if she would freeze to death or, even worse, stay there through the night and by morning be nothing but the blood and bones left by hungry animals. Her breaths became quicker and were so shallow that no air seemed to reach her lungs. The dusty earth gave up quick bursts of sand from gusts of northerly winds that blew so fiercely into her nostrils that she coughed but tried to stifle the sounds because she didn’t want to be noticed.
