Wednesday Briefs: Love's Labors - A Crescent Bay Tale, Part I

Hello, hello, and happy Hump Day/Wednesday Briefs Day/April Fool's Day!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful week! Welcome to the Wednesday Briefers, a group of writers who enjoy writing flash fiction for your entertainment. Every week we write a tale, or continue a tale, between 500 and 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

This week, I am pausing my usual story, Don't Look Back, to have a little fun with some familiar characters, the men of Crescent Bay. I hope you enjoy their tale! Don't forget to check out the rest of the Briefers. Their links follow my story. Enjoy!

Love's Labor - A Crescent Bay Tale

“Damn, damn, damn!” Alexx doubled over, hugging his middle, as another sharp pain tore through him, threatening to rip him apart.

“I told you it was a bad idea to get up. Get back in that bed!” Miller gave Alexx a no-nonsense look, waving toward the large bed in the middle of the room. “Wow, I didn’t even know this kind of hospital room even existed. Leave it to Crescent Bay,” he muttered as he took Alexx’s arm and ushered him back to bed. “Guess this place is for the rich folks.”

“I want Raoul, where’s Raoul?” Alexx moaned, ignoring Miller’s commentary. True, this room resembled a high end hotel room rather than any sort of birthing room, but right now he didn’t care about that. He just cared about his husband, wanting him to be there.

“You know where he is, and he can’t help it. That’s what you get for going into labor on the night of the full moon. You think they’re gonna let a wolf in here? Sheesh!”

“I don’t care,” Alexx grumbled. The contraction had passed and he could breathe again. “He needs to be here. With me. With our child. Wouldn’t you be pissed if Holt didn’t show up for your child’s birth?”

Miller gently patted his swollen belly. “Well, Holt has his own issues, but naturally we’re going to have the baby where it’s safe for him to be, day or night.”

“Plus he has that sunscreen,” Alexx reminded him. “At least he can go out in the sun with that. There’s nothing that’s going to help Raoul not change.”

“No, that’s so true,” Miller agreed. “Speaking of Holt, he should be here soon, I just talked to him.”

“Goody for him.” Alexx pouted. “At least one of us will be happy.”

Miller rolled his eyes. “Hey, how about I get you some chocolate? Sounds like someone needs a heavy dose of feel-good medicine.”

“Yeah, yeah, that sounds great. I know they have vending machines here.” Alexx’s eyes lit up at the thought. “Bring me a candy bar or two. Um, the kind with the coconut. And nuts. Oh, and a cup of hot chocolate too. With whipped cream. And sprinkles.”

“Right away. I remember seeing the machine on this floor. Won’t take but a minute.” He turned to go, but his way was blocked by a tank in a nurse’s uniform. Her name tag read Dorothy. She did not look amused.

“Just what do you think you’re doing?”

“I-I-I…” Miller stuttered, apparently at a loss for words.

“Getting me food,” Alexx supplied helpfully.

“You’ll do no such thing.” She pushed a strong finger into Miller’s chest. “He’s going to have surgery, and he can have nothing on his stomach. Do you want him to aspirate and choke to death? Ice chips only.” She jammed a styrofoam cup into Miller’s chest. “Here. This is what he can have. Bon appétit.”

She pivoted and stormed toward the door, pausing only long enough to add, “I have my eye on you, so don’t try anything,” before she disappeared from view.

“That was one scary broad.” Miller looked down into the cup. “Ice chips,” he announced. “Better than  nothing, I guess.” He stirred them with a plastic spoon set into the cup. “Want me to feed them to you?”

“No!” Alexx wailed. “I want chocolate! And I want Raoul.” He drummed his fists against the mattress, and kicked his feet petulantly.

At that moment, Holt appeared in the doorway. “Everything okay here?” He looked between Alexx and Miller, even as he approached Miller, patting his swollen stomach gently. “How’s my little one?”

“Not so little anymore.” Miller chuckled. He jerked his thumb in Alexx’s direction. “He’s upset about Raoul not being here. I offered to get him chocolate, but Nurse Scary put the kibosh on that.”

“Oh dear, I’m sorry. Alexx, is there anything I can do? Anything else, I mean? We wouldn’t want to go against your nurse, now would we?”

“I. Just. Want. Raoul,” Alexx gritted out from clenched teeth. Suddenly he arched his back as a fresh contraction swept over him.

“Is the doctor coming?” Holt asked Miller. Miller curled up against him, purring contentedly, cradling their growing child between them.

“The call’s been placed. I think she’s on her way, but I don’t know from where.”

“With my luck, she’s a goddamned wolf, and she’s somewhere out there howling!’ Alexx screamed.

“We should probably get comfortable,” Holt suggested. He took Miller’s hand and led him to a large divan, then sat and placed Miller on his lap. “Looks like this might be a long night.”

Two agonizing hours later, the doctor bustled in. “Sorry,” she apologized, “just finished another delivery. How are we doing, Mr. Marchand?” She took Alexx’s wrist, feeling for his pulse.

“Ready to be done with this,” Alexx grumbled. He was between contractions and, for the moment, feeling no pain.

“It’ll be over soon enough,” she assured him. “We just need to make sure the baby is ready to come out and that you’re ready to deliver.” She glanced over at the couch. “Would one of you be the baby’s father?”

“Do either one of them look like a hairy wolf?” Alexx cried petulantly. “That’s my best friend Miller, and he’s having Holt’s baby. Holt’s a vampire. My husband isn’t here right now, where he should be!”

“Try not to excite yourself, Mr. Marchand.” The doctor’s voice never rose in volume or tone, maintaining an even professionalism. “I’m sure he’s on his way.”

“Actually, it’s the full moon,” Miller supplied helpfully. “He’s not exactly himself tonight. Holt and I are standing in until Raoul can get here.”

“He needs to be here, this is his fault!” Alexx screamed. “If he can’t be bothered to show up for his own child’s birth, then forget it. I’m not doing it either!”

“Uh, dude… you don’t exactly have a choice,” Miller pointed out.

Alexx screamed all the louder.

Tease Me Thursday #1: When Will I See You Again

Today, MA & I are proud to kick off our new venture - Tease Me Thursday. A little bit of fun when it's not quite Friday, and you're ready for the week to end. A way for readers to enjoy their favorite authors and meet new ones. Hope you like us!

Today, I'm going to give  you an excerpt from my first Amber Quill release, When Will I See You Again. This is seven paragraphs that chronicles an intimate moment between Raoul and Alexx. Raoul is the charismatic werewolf that runs the popular supernatural nightclub Charisma, and Alexx is a young wannabe crime reporter. Fate has thrown them together. For what purpose remains to be seen. Don't forget to the visit the other authors, you'll find them at the end of my post. Enjoy!

They took turns undressing one another, watching with undisguised pleasure as each bit of bare flesh was laid open to view; they tossed their clothes helter skelter onto the floor. When they were naked, they fell together in a tangle of limbs; their mouths joined as their hands and fingers explored one another with unabashed joy.

Raoul found he could not stop kissing Alexx, surprised and delighted when the younger man actually took the initiative and slipped his tongue inside Raoul’s mouth, ravishing it with innocent abandon. His hand placement felt a little more unsure, a little shyer, so Raoul took one of Alexx’s hands in his and placed it against his engorged cock, encouraging him. Alexx slipped his hand about Raoul’s erection, his thumb sliding across the cockhead. Raoul shivered and moaned, his other hand gliding down Alexx’s back, feeling the individual vertebrae beneath his fingertips, until he reached his beautifully taut ass. There he slid his fingers between those inviting cheeks and over Alexx’s entrance. God, there was so much he wanted to do with Alexx, so much he wanted to share.

He heard Alexx’s intake of breath as he touched his most intimate parts, his other hand continuing to caress and touch anywhere and everywhere. It wasn’t that he was avoiding touching Alexx’s cock, it was just that that was not his sole object; he wanted to know Alexx as intimately as possible. He drew back slightly, his eyes seeking Alexx’s; searching for something… what, he wasn’t sure.

“Is something wrong?”

“No, not at all,” Alexx reassured him, claiming his lips once more, causing Raoul to lose his train of thought.

It was becoming increasingly harder to think, his emotions rushing to the forefront, being let loose for the first time in many years, but Raoul was determined, because he knew he had to do this properly, make sure he got it perfect for this, their first time together. His heart told him this would not be the last time, and he wanted to make damn sure he didn’t fuck things up. He started to insert the tip of one finger into Alexx’s tightness, before it dawned on him he should use lube. The question was, did he have any?

He reluctantly withdrew the finger. Alexx moaned and pressed against him, their hardnesses rubbing together as he whispered into Raoul’s ear, “What’s wrong? Keep going. I want you to…”

Introducing my latest release

On Sunday, I'm excited to say, my first release with Amber Quill is coming out, and today starts my informal blog tour to promote it. I say informal because it's something I put together myself with people I know, and a few very nice reviewers. I hope you'll love my book as much as I do, so I'm going to tell you a little about it. You might have seen snippets of it here and there. This book is very close to my heart, I must admit.

The name of the book is When Will I See You Again. If the title sounds familiar, that's because it's the name of a song by the Three Degrees, and yes, I was influenced by it when I wrote this. Here is the video, so you can listen to it, too.  http://youtu.be/T6fVDAjs9f0

Now, here is my inspiration for Raoul Marchand.

This is what Raoul looks like in my mind. And yes, this is Gerard Butler, the way he looks in Attila.

When Will I See You Again takes place in a time when the presence of werewolves and vampires among the general populace is known and accepted, largely because of drugs that control any baser animal instincts. SL57 is the werewolf wonder drug, short for SomnioLupus, otherwise known as Wolf Trank. In the small seaside town of Crescent Bay, people come to the famous nightclub Charisma, mostly because of the charismatic man who is one of the best-known supes in the area: Raoul Marchand. Raoul is a regular party animal, one who lives but to have a good time, and who cares for no one and nothing. But he hasn’t always been this way...

Let me share the blurb with you.

Raoul Marchand is the crown prince of Charisma, the infamous night club in Crescent Bay, renowned for its supernatural clientele. He has the pick of any and all men, but he cares for none. He uses them and throws them away again, and has done so for some twenty years, in the aftermath of a tragedy that robbed him of what he loved most in the world.

Alexx Jameson is an idealistic young would-be reporter with the Crescent Bay Chronicle. Presented with an opportunity to write a story on the Marchands, he eagerly grasps the chance to be a real reporter. His friend, Chronicle receptionist Miller Fenwick, suggests they go to Charisma to do a little research. Alexx isn’t sure that’s such a great idea. After all, he’s still under age, being only twenty. No problem, Miller can fix that! Added bonus, there’s a full moon tonight.

When Alexx first encounters Raoul, it isn’t exactly in the way he dreamed of, and he’s sure he made a terrible first impression. But Fate throws them together under unforeseen circumstances, and the attraction between them can’t be denied. Can Raoul let go of the past long enough to find his future with Alexx, or is he doomed to repeat past mistakes?

And now for an excerpt:

Alexx drew in his breath in dismay. This wasn’t going well. Even so, he could not stop staring at Raoul. His eyes met the other man’s. Raoul’s were very golden; he wasn’t aware such colors even existed in the spectrum of the human eye. But then again, he didn’t have any friends that were werewolves either. He wondered if this was a sign that perhaps this man was about to change, right here and now?
The thought was both exhilarating and frightening.

Alexx’s vision telescoped until he wasn’t aware of anything but this gorgeous man in front of him. Blood pounded in his ears and his mouth felt suddenly dry. Having lost all sense of the others in the room, he was surprised when he felt his chair yanked out from under him. Before he could fall, a hand grabbed the scruff of his neck, propelling him to his feet. He glanced at his companion; Miller was being subjected to the same surly treatment.

“You waste my time for this?” Raoul’s upper lip curled back in a snarl. Alexx found himself wildly attracted to him. “I have somewhere I need to be. Paolo, please show these gentlemen out.” Sarcastic much? He turned and reached for the door, but it opened before he touched it.

A shaggy blond with hazel eyes and a cheerful countenance stuck his head inside. “Hey Paolo—” He interrupted himself at the sight of the occupants of the room.

Alexx heard Miller’s sigh of relief, even as he too recognized the newcomer. He’d seen him around the Chronicle often enough, although he’d never really spoken to him. Foster Levine, son of the Chronicle’s owner—heir apparent and future newspaper magnate.

Alexx’s relief quickly changed to anxiety. What if Foster knew how old he really was? He couldn’t be sure one way or the other, but for the sake of argument, he had to assume he did. Would he out him to Raoul Marchand and his burly minion? Had they simply jumped from the frying pan to be scorched by the fire?

And this is how I pictured Foster, for the record. Get your drool bibs ready for this one too lol

I always hoped that I would find a publisher for WWISYA, but the road wasn't an easy one. Luckily for me, I have the support of my wonderful kids and some very great friends.  First I was rejected, and then I was ignored (the publisher was interested but forgot to get back to me). I had always wanted to sub to Amber Quill, but they were, until recently, by invitation only. So I took a chance, and found my book accepted in six days, and published three months later.

So now here I am, excited and thrilled to bring this to you. I don't want to give away too much of the story, because that's what reading is for, right? Discovery, exploration, sharing... and I hope you get to experience them all. So I am going to have a giveaway. Two readers will win a copy of When Will I See You Again.

What do you have to do? Well, I would like it if you followed me, but I won't demand it. What I am asking for is that you comment and tell me whatever comes to mind. What you think of the song, the blurb, the excerpt - how you're feeling today, anything. Be sure to leave an email address, so I can contact you if you win.

I will pick the winners before my Valentine's Day Blog Hop, and post them. You can comment on any of my stops on my tour. I'll put all the  names into a hat and draw from them.

I hope you enjoy the tour. Most of all, I hope you enjoy the book. I put my heart in it.  Thanks for listening.

The first stop on my tour is The Novel Approach. Go there and enjoy! There'll be a giveaway there too!

Until next time, take care!
