BLURB:

Annie O'Malley's dream of owning a secondhand bookstore in tight-knit Audubon Springs is coming true. Still reeling from her parents' sudden deaths, she believes that signs or messages can be found within the pages of books. She loves her job and has made plenty of friends but longs for the acceptance only love and a family can provide.

Tony Iuliano is there to fix the wiring in her shop. He doesn't believe in fate, magic, or the power of a good book. All this combined with his sexy-as-sin presence and all-knowing attitude infuriates Annie. The quirky bookworm intrigues him enough to accept her bet to read a book from her shop. When he discovers a stack of fifty-year-old love letters in the book, he wants to leave the past alone, but seeing it as a sign, Annie challenges him to read the letters and search for the long-lost lovers or lose the bet.

While shaking the dust off several ill-fated romances and fighting their attraction at every turn, the pair soon become the town gossip daily special. If they can stop arguing long enough, they may just discover this particular sign was meant for them all along.

EXCERPT

He glanced at the book she left on the counter and picked it up, weighing it in his big hand as if it were a foreign object. “I don’t get it. What is it about a book that so completely captures your attention?”
Annie’s eyes widened. A smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. “Hmmm, no, I don’t think so.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means I’m not going to try to explain this to a non-reader.”
A dark expression flashed across his face. “I read.”
“Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition and Playboy do not count.”
“I said I can read!”
“Calm down there, big guy. I’m sure you can read, but I own the only bookstore in town, and I’ve never seen you in here to buy a book. To my way of thinking, that puts you in the category of a non-reader, as in someone who does not read for pleasure.”
“Okay, fine. You’ve got me. Humor me. What is it about a book that completely grabs your attention, leaving your store vulnerable to theft and you to bodily harm?”
Annie regarded him through narrowed eyes, not entirely sure if he was serious or seriously trying to provoke an argument. She found both options interesting. Up until now, they shared very little in the way of one-on-one dialogue. The nature of this question indicated a certain level of contemplation he’d already given on the subject. “You’re not going to let that go, are you?”
“No.” He revealed just the slightest crack of a smile.

Wednesday Briefs: Dallas in Wonderland II: Chapter Three

A snowy Wednesday here, but it could have been worse. Just a few inches. Happy Hump Day! Time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! Are you ready? We sure are!

Last week, Dallas learned that someone was outside his apartment, looking for him. Could it have been Samuel, or is that just wishful thinking on Dallas' part? If it was, then why? The answer may lie in today's episode of Dallas in Wonderland II. Then go see what the other Briefers are up to! Their links follow my tale. Enjoy!

Dallas in Wonderland II: Chapter Three

Sometimes Samuel sat behind his imposing mahogany desk, fingers steepled against his sensual lips, regarding Dallas with his unusual coppery eyes flecked with green. Watching him, like a cat waiting in front of a mouse hole waits for the mouse to emerge. Except he wasn’t only the cat, he was the bait, too, wasn’t he?

Other times, he pulled up a chair close to the leather couch Dallas lay on, so close that it took all of Dallas’ self-restraint not to reach out and touch him in inappropriate ways.

Ways that were far less inappropriate when they’d been together in Wonderland.

Today was one of those days.

Samuel sat so close that his scent wafted to Dallas, that enticing aroma comprised of arousal and need, and the earthiness of desire. How badly Dallas wanted to bury his face in Samuel’s naked crotch and inhale him.
Nothing in Samuel’s demeanor indicated this was even an option.

Dallas forced himself to focus on Samuel’s words. Too often they made little sense to him and today was no exception. Apparently, Samuel had been appointed by the court to be Dallas’ psychiatrist. Dallas wasn’t sure why. At some point, at Samuel’s recommendation, a decision would be reached.

Regarding what? Dallas had no clue.

Samuel cleared his throat, a gentle reminder for Dallas to pay attention. But Dallas had been listening. Samuel had just asked him about the dreams, was he still having them. That’s how he referred to their time in Wonderland. As the deranged dreams of a disturbed mind.

No, he never came out and said that in so many words, but Dallas could read between the lines. He knew all too well he’d been tarred by the brush of insanity and that’s why he’d lost so much of what mattered in his life. He was determined, though, not to let it stick to him. But at this point, he had no idea what he needed to do to reverse what had happened.

Everything was still too confused, too muddled. Reality and fantasy mixing and merging in his mind. He never knew where one left off and the other began. Just when he thought he had a handle on it, everything changed, like a demented traffic light giving mixed signals.

And underneath it all, Dallas was convinced he’d find the flagrant fingerprint of his unfaithful ex, Quentin Mandrake. He just needed to be able to prove it.

“Have you had any more of those dreams?” Samuel repeated the question.

“No, Dr. Levi,” Dallas dutifully replied.

Not for lack of trying, he had to admit.

Samuel shifted in his chair, recrossed his legs. Dallas watched the expensive material of his trousers tighten about those familiar legs. Samuel had the body of a much younger man. Dallas wasn’t even sure how old he really was. The subject had never arisen between them.

“Are you taking the pills I gave you? Every night?”

Now Dallas was on shakier ground. The truth was he had no desire to put strange chemicals into his body, even those prescribed by the delicious Dr. Levi. He had them, yes, every single one that Samuel  had ever given him. They were tucked safely in his apartment, just in case he ever changed his mind.

Dallas doubted he ever would.

“Dr. Levi, may I ask you a question?” Dallas’ way of not answering Samuel’s, so he wouldn’t have to lie to him.

Samuel’s smile was condescending. “The deepest waters make the least noise.”

What does that even mean? Dallas wasn’t sure if it was an observation, or simply something calculated to confuse him even more than he already was.

“What do you wish to know?” Samuel prompted.

“How do you know Quentin?”

“What makes you think I know Mr. Mandrake?”

Dallas found it maddening that Samuel often answered a question with a question. Used his own avoidance tactic on him.

Besides, he’d answered this question before. Just as he’d asked it before. And never been satisfied with the response. He expected the same result today.

“I saw him. In your office. The day...”

“Yes, Dallas? The day... Please finish your thought.”

But you already know what day. Dallas’ thoughts flared angrily. The day of the trial. The day Queen Quentin tried to take your head off.

That was the day he’d awakened to find himself in Samuel’s office, the day his world had begun to unravel. He felt the key to everything lay in Wonderland. It was imperative that he return, as soon as possible, so he could put everything right.

But how?

“The day you said you loved me,” Dallas said softly. He didn’t look at Samuel, afraid of what he might see. Mirth? Anger? Contempt?

Or the worst possibility... pity?

“Sit up, Dallas.”

Startled, Dallas obeyed, swinging his legs onto the floor. The leather couch creaked as Samuel took a seat just behind him. Dallas couldn’t see him, but he felt his presence all too well.

Now this was something different.

“Tell me more about what you think I said,” he encouraged Dallas in a breathy voice. Warm fingers caressed Dallas’ neck, massaging his flesh. “You’re very tense,” Samuel observed.

Was that really so surprising, under the circumstances?

“Did I say I love you, Dallas? Didn’t you say you loved me?”

Dallas closed his eyes, his skin tingling where Samuel touched it, thinking back to that day. To the hateful crowd that chanted Off with his head. To the vengeance-filled Quentin-in-drag who’d referred to Dallas as his tart. What had actually been said? Who said what?

Then he remembered.

Dallas had been the one that told Samuel, ‘I love you.’ Yes, that was it, not the other way around. Bitterness filled Dallas’ mouth.

Had he been wrong, then? Wrong about everything?

Wait just a moment.

He craned his neck, turning startled eyes to Samuel.

How the blazes had Samuel known what was said by whom... unless he’d actually been there?
“Hold on, my love, hold on.”

Samuel smiled.

Excerpt One:

Destiny

As soon as I got in the car, I almost changed my mind. I was exhausted. It had been a long week and, quite frankly, I was not in the mood for a party. Still, I had to go. I’d just say hello to Todd and leave early, I decided. I fumbled around in the dim light, looking for the directions. I had gone to Fort Lauderdale only a handful of times, and I still wasn’t sure how to get downtown.

Todd and I had known each other for years. He was the friend from Long Island who had organized the dismal raft-up that made me decide to leave New York. He was one of the most sociable and fun people you’d ever meet. Once you get on his email list, you’re a friend for life. That’s how he is. Todd was one of the last people I said goodbye to when I moved to Boca.

The previous Tuesday night, he had called. In his classic, larger-than-life style, he said he knew a guy  who had a house in Fort Lauderdale, and he and a big group of friends from Long Island were flying down to stay there for the upcoming boat show. They were throwing a huge party on Saturday night, and I just had to be there.

I was not in the mood even early in the week. I was working long hours at the time, and I was men- tally drained. I also didn’t look forward to partying with a bunch of single guys from Long Island. If it had been anyone else but Todd, I would have politely declined, but we hadn’t seen each other in over a year and a half.

Reluctantly, I accepted, but I added one little white lie. I told Todd I had a boyfriend. The last thing I want- ed was for any guy at this party to think I was single. I did not want to get hit on by any out-of-state guys on vacation. I’d just make a quick appearance and get home early, I told myself.

I pulled up to the house a little after dark. It was a spectacular, newly constructed mansion on the inter- coastal in the Las Olas Isles  of  Fort  Lauderdale. The home was impressive and stately, surrounded by stunning landscaping tall palm trees and a gated entrance. Although the house was huge, it looked quite warm and inviting, as well.

Suddenly, something odd hit me. There didn’t seem to be a party. In fact, hardly any cars were parked on the street. I double checked the address and checked the number on the gate.Yes, it was the right house. Was I too early?

Flashbacks of the cancelled raft-up went through my mind. The last time I got an invitation from Todd  for a supposedly huge event, it turned out to be a small disaster. I swore that if Todd had invited me to this house and there was no party, he was going to owe me big time.

As I started toward the gate, my doubts took over. What was I doing there? I couldn’t hear any music. I considered turning around and getting back in my car, but just then, someone on a Harley parked next to my car. He spotted me right away and made his way towards me. I thought I would look foolish if I turned around and got back in my car.

The tall man from the Harley approached.“Hi, I’m Joe.”

“Hi, Joe, I’m Jackie.”

“Hey, Jackie. So, how do you know Chris?”

“I don’t know Chris. My friend Todd invited me.” “Oh. I have no idea who Todd is.”

I was starting to feel a bit awkward, but there was no turning back by then, so Joe and I walked in togeth- er. From a grand center hall foyer, we stepped down into a sunken living room accented by a vaulted ceiling and twenty-foot floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

The first thing I noticed was the angel above the fireplace. It was a stunning, hand-carved, six-foot- tall wooden angel with a four-foot wingspan. I stood there staring at it, mesmerized. He was  beautiful. For a moment, I completely forgot where I was or how I got there.

I began to notice my surroundings. This was not the house of a bachelor, as I had assumed. It was defi- nitely a family home. Family photos were everywhere, adults and children covering every wall and counter. In the foyer, an ornate antique Bible and a pile of rosaries graced a coffee table. Crosses and religious pictures adorned every wall. I could see that this home had been decorated by a mother, a woman of faith. It was a gracious and welcoming home.

The moment we walked in, Joe had left my side and slipped through the sliding glass doors leading to the back deck. Obviously, he’d been there before and knew the house well. I’m not sure how long I stood there, taking in my surroundings.

I quickly realized there was, in fact, no party. I was standing in a stranger’s home,  completely  alone. No crowds, no music, and definitely no party. Once again, I contemplated discreetly leaving. Then I heard a voice that seemed to be addressing me.

“Hey, there. I’m Carlos. How do you know Chris?” I followed the voice and walked through a break-fast room to get within view of whoever was talking to me. The voice had come from the kitchen. A casually dressed guy was seated at the island, enjoying his din- ner, and I guess he had noticed me standing by myself in the living room. I probably looked ridiculous just standing there, staring at the angel.

“Hi, Carlos. I’m Jackie. I don’t know Chris. I was invited by my friend Todd.”

“Who the hell is Todd?” Carlos blurted out.

At that point, I definitely felt like I had just crashed someone’s home. What was I doing there? Nothing about this made any sense. Why had Todd invited me to that house? Why had he told me there would be  a  party  there  that  night? Why  didn’t  anyone  there know who he was?

I needed to leave, and by then I didn’t care whether anyone saw me walk out the front door with no explanation. However, as I made my way back through the breakfast room and across the living room, I was intercepted.

A dark-haired man in blue swim trunks barreled through the sliding glass doors into the living room. He didn’t have a shirt on, just a towel wrapped around his shoulders. He was soaking wet, obviously just out of the pool. Oh my goodness, but he was cute! He was also half-naked and smiling at me—and that smile was melting me.

Full of excitement and exuberance, he put his hand out to shake mine and announced,“Hi, I’m Chris.”

 Why do I Write?

Throughout my life I've explored life with such passion.  I've learned how to play the saxophone, drums, and piano. I've traveled to over twenty-two different countries and became fluent in three languages.  The art of cooking, yoga, oil painting, and amateur movie making are old familiar friends.  The summits of several mountains over 14,000 feet high reaching to the heavens have felt my footsteps and my hair has rustled through the wind of a catamaran sailing through the ocean.  Yes, my life has been an adventure.  An adventure I treasure and recall every moment I can through my journals.

The journey of my life would not be complete without my daily journals.  I write every day. A simple pad and pen are my trusted companions and my dearest friends.  They've never betrayed me and every once in a while, as I get older, they teach me some unforgettable lessons.  Lessons I may have missed had I not recorded my journey.

Why do I write?  It's a question I ask my myself every day.  I suppose for most writers the answer is the same.  I don't know how to live without the ability to express myself through writing.  I write because I need to and because a part of my soul will slowly fall asleep without this joy.  Yes, I've explored the world and lived life to the fullest, but my greatest joy always comes down to that quiet hour when I can just be alone with my pen and paper.

Virtual Book Tour: Banished Love

Please welcome author Ramona Flightner, who is going to talk about her latest release, Banished Love, and is going to tell us a little about the inspiration for her novel. One randomly drawn commenter will receive a $50 Amazon/B&N GC. The more you comment, the better your chances of winning. To find out the other stops on the tour, go here. Don't forget to look for the rafflecopter at the end of this post.

The Inspiration Behind BANISHED LOVE

By Ramona Flightner/ @ramonaflightner

One of the most frequent questions I am asked is what inspired me to write BANISHED LOVE. I remember standing in a river in Montana as I fly-fished and a story continued to play through my mind. For months, I had ignored a little voice inside of me telling me that I wanted to write. Finally, as this story continued to play through my mind and became increasingly vivid, I began to think that this might be the story I wanted to tell.

I used to think that everyone walked around making up stories to themselves throughout the day. That they would start a story and then hit an imaginary “pause” button when they arrived to work and then hit “play” again when they had a free moment to restart it, editing as they went along until they reached the end of that story. I used to listen to music and create stories for myself on long road trips or plane trips. I didn’t need to always have a book, because I often wanted to know what would happen in the story I was imagining. Only as I have gotten older have I realized that most people don’t do that. However, even though I have always made up stories for myself, I had not considered myself a creative sort of person nor a writer.

However, while I was home in Montana in the summer of 2010, I began to consider writing. I knew in the beginning I would write just for me. I talked with my dad about all kinds of old time knowledge that I wouldn’t know anything about. Like how the men cut trees in the early days and skidded them out of the forest or how an old-timer would have set traps. I was laying the foundation for research, even though I have yet to use much of the knowledge I learned at the time.

When I first began to write BANISHED LOVE, it had no name. I simply called it “Ramona project.” As I edited it, I added a number after it so I could see the different draft changes. I have about 50 different drafts on my computer. I also thought I would write it as an epistolary novel, similar to the fantastic THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY novel I had loved. I thought that since I loved writing letters, I would be able to write an engaging epistolary novel.

How wrong I was! It is incredibly hard to write such a novel and I now realize why there are so few of them. I soon scrapped that idea for the first part of the book, although I did have to completely re-write 200 pages because I clung to that ill-advised idea for book two. I realized that although I may be a good letter writer that does not mean I can write an interesting book full of letters.

I decided to write in first person because, as I struggled to begin writing, Clarissa began to speak to me. It was her voice I heard as I lay on my bed wondering to myself how I could have imagined myself a writer. All of a sudden, her voice popped into my head saying: “My clumsiness would be my downfall.” From there, the book just started flowing and I often had to play catch up to my thoughts.

First person was often hard to write because I couldn’t write from any one else’s view (that seems like such an obvious statement, but it isn’t always as apparent when you are in the middle of a scene), and I could only write what she would know about. I found it limiting at times, and I often had to think through ways to circumvent those limitations.

I have loved this journey of discovery as I continue to write. It is one of the most rewarding aspects of my life and I am thankful I listened to that little voice, urging me to write.

What has inspired you to write? What are some of the ideas you have had to discard along the way?

EXCERPT:

“Colin, anything in that paper interesting enough to share? You read it like you are hoping to find some long-lost treasure,” Lucas cajoled.

“Hmm…no, nothing uplifting like that song. Just more tales of death and woe around the world. The Boxers are getting more powerful and dangerous.” Colin sighed, setting aside the Boston Evening Transcript.

“And why should we care about a bunch of pugilists?” Mrs. Smythe demanded, her thin face even longer with her disapproval.

I giggled; Lucas snorted before acting as though he were sneezing to hide his amusement, but Colin stared at Mrs. Smythe with frank fascination.

“Do you read the papers, Mrs. Sm…Sullivan? Talk with your friends?” At her cold stare, he continued. “The Boxers are discontented Chinese on the verge of rebellion who are indiscriminately killing Christians in China. Including American Christians,” Colin said helpfully. “I thought it was the topic of conversation these days.” He glanced toward Lucas and me, and we both nodded our agreement.

“A genteel woman,” Mrs. Smythe began, with a sniff in my direction to indicate I must be lacking in that regard, “would not know of such vulgar goings-on halfway around the world with a bunch of savages, my dear Colin. I do read the papers but only the parts that pertain to my world and me. The parts about running a good home, a good kitchen. About decoration.” With this, she waved her hand around the room to indicate its frightful state. “Decorum.” Yet another censorious glare was sent in my direction. “These are the important matters of my life,” she stated with one more sniff, showing her displeasure at the topic.

Guest Blogger: Raine O'Tierney

Please welcome fellow author and Wednesday Briefer, Raine O'Tierney, here to talk about her latest
release. And she has bravely answered my infamous Rick Reed questions! What a brave soul. She deserves a drink for that. Be right back. Go ahead and start, Raine!

The Questions
1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
Definitely Siôn O’Tierney—the hubs—because we come up with some awesome m/m together and if you’re going to be stuck on an island, you might as well be writing some kick ass m/m, right? For practicality’s sake, I’d say we’ll bring a Swiss Army knife. I know. Boring. But if we don’t survive, there’s no more m/m.

2)      Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?
Moulin Rouge! and Toulouse-Lautrec, I only speak the truth

3)      Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scene using them:  cliff, café, artist
“You made it!” All the tension he’d felt for the last two hours escaped in one long, quiet sigh. He grinned sappily up at Jake.
“You sound surprised.” Jake’s voice was warm, his smile inviting.
Well, the coffee had long gone cold waiting in the dreary little café. So much waiting, so much people watching. Students and hipsters, artists and businessmen.
“After the way we left it… Well… I…” His cheeks burned with embarrassment at the memory of his unprompted confession. I love you. He could have thrown himself off a cliff right then—if one had been available.
~Fin.

(~Fin. makes it 100 exactly! ROCK!)

    4)   You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why?
Moriarty. And because, it’s Moriarty.

    5)   What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?
Playing videogames together. Nerdy, but romtastic! What’s more romantic than losing yourselves in an intricately crafted storyline with a character that you’re both invested in? For the same reason, I find reading a book out loud or collaborating on a story together very romantic!

   6)    When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
Always characters! Gentleman number one and gentleman number two, how they complement each other, and contrast, the ways their bodies fit together, the way they move and… Wait, what was the question?

7)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?
Chris Hemsworth! What? I want to see him rock a tiny hat or a fascinator.

8)      Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?
Horror scares me. I know that’s the point, but… I’m sorta a huge chicken with VERY vivid nightmares. Like right now…I’m thinking about zombies. Dang it, Julie. Zombie nightmares!

9)      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?
History makes my face hurt.

10)  Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?
Probably my retro-futuristic 1920’s mob-ruled Kansas City m/m Romeo x Juliet story.

(Thank you, Julie Hayes, for hosting me on your blog!)

At the Under the Table host club, Valentine’s Day means one thing: cash. Neglected housewives, newly ex-girlfriends, and lovelorn thirtysomethings pay for the attention of handsome men. Shy bartender Jem has always wanted to be a host, and when the club’s owner, Miss Rye, accepts a contract from a MensLove Convention, Jem volunteers to flirt and make out with another host for the ladies’ entertainment. Bailey, an older man who’s had his eye on Jem, convinces Miss Rye to let him be Jem’s partner, and everyone gets more than they expected—especially Jem and Bailey.

“It was just playacting,” he said emphatically, hoping to make it true. His breath escaped in a little white plume that quickly dissipated on the night air. No. No, it wasn’t.
“Maybe for you.”
Bailey had slipped through the door unnoticed, so that when he spoke, Jem started. He turned on Bailey. “All of that—the kissing—it was real for you?”
“Yes.”
“You… like me?”
No one had ever liked him in his whole life. Tolerated him, for the sake of Renzy, yes. But liked him? He could remember standing next to Renzy at school, while his brother received one love confession after another from the girls in their class. They had faces so similar they could almost have been identical twins—if not for the eyes. Renzy was always the one people were drawn to.
“I can take it back if you want,” Bailey said quietly. “If you think I’m too old. Or if you’re not interested in being with a man. I’ll say I was joking just then, and we can pretend it was just a job.”
“You can do that? Just pretend?”
“No. Not really. I doubt I’ll be able to delude myself after tasting you. But for your sake, I can try. All you have to do is tell me that you want me to pretend.”

Bio
Raine O’Tierney is an always-writing, boundlessly enthusiastic, exclamation point addict! (!!!) She is known for declaring every day “the best day EVER!” and every thing her “all-time FAVORITE!” Despite this (obnoxious?) exuberance, she still somehow manages to have a wonderfully encouraging husband, Siôn, (who also writes M/M rom!) and an amazing group of friends and colleagues who continue to support (read: put up with) her. Raine spends her days working as a library lady, fighting the good fight for intellectual freedom.
