Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.
The fun continues as Salvation enjoys their free time in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The next day, Ben and Ryan try to sleep it, but evidently that's not in the cards. See what's going on in this week's chapter of In Pieces. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them. Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!
In Pieces #64 (16.1)
Despite being up late the night before, Ryan found himself
awake early on Monday morning. He didn’t get out of bed immediately, reluctant
to leave the warmth of Ben’s embrace, his thoughts tracing the previous
evening.
By the time Ben and Ryan caught up with the other members of
Salvation, everyone appeared considerably more relaxed than they’d been before.
What a difference a couple of hours could make! Using their phones, they
located a Target store that wasn’t very far from where they were staying and headed
there, dividing themselves between Cameron’s and Marge’s cars. There they were
able to find a good selection of swimsuits at reasonable prices. Marge said she
didn’t intend to swim but she’d be happy to sit by the pool and watch them.
Afterward they ate dinner at a Chinese restaurant, then finished the night at a
neighborhood bar, doing shots, singing karaoke, and dancing.
Ryan’s favorite part of the evening had been getting to
dance cheek to cheek with Ben. Although he did have to split his attention, a
little flustered when the ladies clamored for a dance. But after he’d danced
with both Abby and Marge, Ben had informed the others he was off-limits and
claimed Ryan for himself alone.
Life didn’t get any better than this.
Lost in thought, he didn’t notice Ben had awakened until he
spoke.
“Penny for your thoughts.”
Ryan snuggled closer against Ben, inhaling his intoxicating
scent. “Just thinking about last night,” he admitted. “How good it felt to
dance with you.”
“Mmm, yeah, it did,” Ben agreed. He slid one bare leg across
Ryan’s body, knocking the sheet off in the process as he rubbed against his
crotch. “This feels good too.”
Ryan wasn’t about to argue with him about that. He was more
than ready to escalate Ben’s action into something more. But a sharp knock at the door rather
effectively broke the mood.
“I can only guess who that is.” Ben groaned as he rolled up
into a sitting position. “Think it’s too late to put out the do not disturb
sign?”
The knocking
continued, relentlessly. Ben tugged on a pair of boxers, a frown creasing his
forehead. “Guess so. I don’t think they’ll leave us alone until we come out,
might as well get dressed.”
“Coming, coming,” he yelled in the direction of the door as
he crossed the motel room before turning to Ryan with a shrug of apology. “I’m
sorry.”
Ryan held up one hand. “Don’t be. It’s all good.” He grabbed
his clothes and hurried into the bathroom before Ben reached the door. By the
time he came out, fully dressed, Ben had admitted Deacon and Keanu. Deacon
turned toward Ryan as he took his place at Ben’s side.
“I’m sorry, man. I had a feeling we’d be too early. But some people can’t take no for an
answer.” He rolled his eyes in Keanu’s direction.
“What do you mean, too early?” Keanu seemed entirely unfazed
by Deacon’s words. “They’re not sleeping, are they?” He indicated Ben and Ryan
with a wave of one hand.
“I guess not after you tried to beat the door down,” Deacon
rebutted. “Who can sleep through an earthquake?”
Keanu stuck his tongue out at his lover. “They love us,
don’t you, guys?” He turned plaintive eyes toward Ben and Ryan. Ben laughed.
“Well, we’re definitely out of bed now,” he said. “Aiden and
Abby up?”
“Knowing them, I bet they are,” Deacon said. “Probably
taking a walk, if they’re not in their room. I think this one planned to go
there next.” He jerked his thumb in Keanu’s direction.
“Of course. Then Marge.”
“Are you that hungry?” Ryan asked teasingly.
“Well, you know how it is when you work up an appetite.”
Keanu slid his arm around Deacon’s waist.
“Maybe I would if you weren’t pounding on the door,” Ben
said pointedly. Ryan could tell he was just playing with him, though, he wasn’t
angry at all.
“Besides, we have swimming to do while we can. We’re playing
tonight.”
“True, true,” Ben agreed.
“What kind of place are we playing tonight?” Ryan asked, not
realizing he’d said we until after it came out. It felt natural now to include
himself as part of the group.
“Dance club,” Ben said. “Should be fun. You know they have a
complimentary breakfast here, right?”
This was directed at Keanu. From the way
his mouth dropped open in surprise, Ryan surmised he hadn’t known.
“Dang. You mean I could have had first breakfast already?
What are we waiting for? Let’s go?”
“Oh my god, what are you, a hobbit?” Deacon snorted as he
followed Keanu through the door, Ben and Ryan trailing behind.
“You know, this might be a good time to talk to the guys
individually, while we’re at the pool. Would you mind?” Ryan asked.
“Of course not. I like the way you think. Just make some
time for me.” Ben pressed a soft lip on Ryan’s lips.
“Always,” Ryan said without hesitation.
