Virtual Book Tour: Three to Get Ready

The Questions
1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
My partner and I’d have a pen and paper (because that totally is one thing)
2)      Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?
I have to admit that I’m not a huge musical fan and I don’t know that many musicals….so I can’t really answer this one.
3)      Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scene using them:  galaxy, jet, cream
Springer had the best mouth in the galaxy and Travis never failed to drop in on him as often as possible. This New Years was no different and they fell on each other as soon as Springer opened the door.
In a matter of moments, Springer had his zipper open and his cock out, that sweet fucking mouth wrapping around his flesh, suction immediately and strong. It took even less time for his spunk to jet out of him, Springer swallowing every drop of his cream.
Fuck, Travis did love this man more than anything. Thank God it was mutual.

4)       You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why?
Sherlock Holmes because smart is sexy.
5)      What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?
A nice dinner out together in a quiet restaurant with good food.
6)      When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
Character – always the character. They come first 99% of the time.
7)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?
It would be a pretty boring movie!
8)      Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?
I’m not a big horror-movie fan, but Freddy Kruger is pretty damn scary, even if I’ve never actually seen the movies!
9)      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?
The problem with historical crushes, is that I start thinking about what the times were like and I get caught up in stuff like, well the Vikings are sexy, except for the part where they’d cover themselves in goose fat and sew themselves into their clothes in the winter and that is totally not sexy.
10)   Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?

I don’t think so. I’m pretty invested in my characters having a happy ending, so I think anything I write would be received okay.

If Mannies Incorporated doesn’t come up with a viable candidate soon, he’s not sure what he’s going to do.

When Dan arrives at Jack’s house, he discovers that this Jack Jones is his Jack Jones, the man he was in love with during college, and who broke up with Dan because Dan wanted children. Will Dan and Jack be able to put the past behind them and work together, or will their past keep them from having a future together?

Pages or Words: 64,000 words/190 pages

Categories: Contemporary, Erotica, Fiction, Gay Fiction, M/M Romance, Romance

Excerpt:
Dan Miller followed the instructions on his GPS to one Jack Jones' house for his interview. He was trying to decide if it was a good or bad omen that he'd dated a Jack Jones. It had ended, so maybe bad. On the other hand, they'd ended because Jack didn't want kids and he did, which was better to learn early on, before they'd invested a lot of time in each other, right? So good sign.
Chuckling at himself, he went over what Drake at Mannies Inc had told him about the family.
Single gay dad, one special needs son - the boy was nearly six and clinically blind. Apparently he could see general shapes if they were high contrast and he could see lights and light contrast. There were twin girls on their way. In a couple of weeks in a few weeks in fact.
Newborns were Dan's favorite. He loved that new baby smell. He loved their chubby little cheeks and limbs, their fat bellies and how quickly they changed.
After reading the file, he'd had to agree with Drake that he seemed like a really good fit for the family.
The position was live-in, so he paid close attention as the condo came into view. Not far from the beach, it was a decent size, not too big, but not tiny. The front was neat and he could see the backyard was fenced in.
Pulling into the drive, he turned off the engine and took a deep breath. Okay. Interview time. He climbed out of the car, with his best ‘I’m the perfect man to look after your kids’ face on.
He knocked on the front door.
"Daddy! Maddie, someone is here!"
"I'll get it, man. Hopefully this one will work for your daddy, Mr. Picky. I have to leave the week of Thanksgiving. I have to."
The door opened and a lovely dark-skinned young woman stood there with a skinny little boy in thick glasses. "Hey there. Can I help you?"
"Hi, Dan Miller. I'm here to see Mr. Jones?"
"Sure. Come on in. I'm Maddie, Nathan's personal assistant." She winked at him.
"Very nice to meet you." He shook her hand.
Then he turned his attention to the little boy. "Hey there, You must be Nathan."
"Uh-huh. Nathan James Jones." One hand was held out. "Pleased meeting you."
Dan took Nathan's hand and shook it solemnly. "Pleased to meet you, too."
"Hey there. Sorry, man. I was paying some bills. Crazy life."
Dan looked up at the familiar voice and blinked. Strong jaw, blond curls, and the bluest eyes in the history of the earth -- that was Jack. His Jack.
Dan felt like he'd been poleaxed.
His Jack who didn't want kids, no way no how was he fucking crazy for even suggesting it.
"Jack?" Oh, smooth, Dan. Clearly it was Jack. Hell, even if he couldn't believe his eyes, the folder he'd gotten from Drake had said the guy's name was Jack.
"Dan? Danny? Oh, my God!" Jack's eyes went wide. "Look at you. You look amazing."
He kind of hated the way Jack's words made him stand a little taller, a little straighter. "So do you. The years have been good to you." Twelve years. Shit, things had changed in that time, that much was obvious, but not how just a glance from those devastating eyes could make his cock perk up. That hadn’t changed a damn bit.

Virtual Book Tour: Beauty and the Beast

Author Name: Sean Michael

Book Name: Beauty and the Beast
Series: Fairytale Shifters
Book: One

Release Date: September 3, 2015
Blurb:
As a rhino shifter, Tromp knows that he’s not the sexiest beast in the world. In fact he’s clumsy and he can’t see very well, and that’s whether he’s in his human or animal form. Still, he enjoys going to the bar and watching the other shifters hooking up, especially the dancers. Then he sees a slinky kitty dancing on the little stage and he’s immediately smitten. He knows a sexy beauty like that would never go for him, but he’s happy just to watch and fantasize about what could be.
For his part, panther shifter Pepper might be gorgeous on the outside, but he knows most people see him as nothing more than a piece of meat and he’s had a hard past. There’s something in the way the big rhino shifter looks at him while he dances, though, that makes him feel special. So when his stint on the stage is over, he heads right to the rhino’s table.
Can Tromp and Pepper ignore the world’s expectations and find what they need in each other?

Pages or Words: 10,500 words

Categories: Contemporary, Erotica, Fantasy, Fiction, Gay Fiction, M/M Romance, Paranormal, Romance, Urban Fantasy

Excerpt:
Tromp got his beer at the bar and made his way over to the table in the corner where he usually sat. It was an out of the way booth and afforded him a good view of the rest of the place. His thick bottle-cap glasses improved his poor vision enough that from here he could watch the pretty people hooking up—the slinky twinks finding each other or handsome older men to dance and laugh with. He was a bit too lumbering for dancing. Too clumsy and grumpy for easy pickups, too. In short, he didn’t really belong. Hence the out of the way table.
The music was loud and thumping, vibrating up from the floor, and his beer was cold. It was all he really needed after a long week of walking around the three warehouses he worked security on. He’d stay and watch for a while, then head home to the peace and quiet of his little cottage just outside the city.
Someone came out onto the tiny stage, one of the performers who danced in stretch jeans and open-front shirts. This guy had waist-length black hair, golden skin, and sharp features.
Tromp watched, utterly fascinated. He usually didn’t do more than admire the beauties who were out of his league, but there was something about this guy, something slinky and sexual that made him want in the best way. Or worst way, given that he never had a chance with the beautiful ones. Still, he could look his fill, couldn’t he? After all, that’s what the dancers were all about—looking but not touching.

Blurb:
Matt and Adam are back and this time they’re welcoming two established Master/sub pairs who want to play together. Without ruining their friendship.

Subs Peter and Max have been best friends forever, since before they met their masters. They were lovers once, but both men needed the influence of a Dom to stay on an even keel. Happily in love with their masters, Devon and Swan, the boys nonetheless want more.

Devon and Swan care deeply for each other and are willing to give becoming something more a try and the Briar Rose seems like the perfect place to give it a go. As neutral ground, if things go wrong, they should be able to put the whole thing behind them and go back to their lives as simply friends.

Can Devon, Peter, Swan, and Max become the blended family they yearn to be?

Pages or Words:  36,000 words

Categories: BDSM, Contemporary, Erotica, Gay Fiction, M/M Romance, Menage/Poly, Romance

Excerpt:
Matt filled out all the paperwork and double-checked his e-mail, making sure that he was on top of everything. The truth was that he was thinking about everything but the guests they were expecting today.

They'd had couples’ stays overlap before, and once there had been three couples all wanting to learn rope bondage. That had been fun -- day after day of demonstrations and checking the Doms' work.

This was different, though.

Today they had two couples coming in who were friends and had decided they wanted to try playing together, perhaps becoming a foursome. Without ruining their friendship. That was the trick.

They were coming for over a week to work with him and Adam.

Matt wasn't sure what to say to them. This didn't seem like a BDSM situation, but a marriage counseling one. Adam had been sure they could help them, though, and he trusted his sub completely. That didn't mean it was going to be easy.

Kendall Webber is deep in the closet. Between working in a garage, having been in the army and a fundamentalist preacher step-father who sent him to summer camps to make him straight, he’s learned to hide his sexuality from absolutely everyone.
Still, when Barton Willis the Third roars into the garage with his Mustang, Kendall can’t help but look, just a little. When Barton not only looks back but invites him in, Kendall’s whole world is turned upside down.
Can Barton help Kendall let go of the past and the attitudes he’s had, literally, beaten into him?

Excerpt:
“Are you wanting factory original or an upgrade to a catback?”
One dark eyebrow rose. “Which’ll make it run better?”
“Well, it depends. The cats give a great sound, but the Borlas? They’re loud and I love the look from the rear. It’s a matter of money and taste and sound.” Kendall headed to the office, rambling on about all the different types and prices and options.
“I like a good-looking rear,” the guy told him when he’d done talking.
“Then you might consider the Borlas. It’s a little pricey, but fine. This is my boss, Pete. He’ll hook you up.”
“Oh, I’d rather you hook me up.”
Was that as suggestive as it sounded?
“I… Okay. Okay, I can help.” He’d done a few custom orders, but Pete would have to approve everything.
The man held out his hand. “Barton Willis, the Third.”
“Kendall. Pleased.” He held out his hand, then pulled it back. He was a grease monkey after all. “I’ve been working, man.”
“I imagine I can wash my hands.”
“Yeah, I tell myself that a lot, but the grime’s pretty deep.” He was not flirting. Not.
“Nothing wrong with a dirty boy.”

(3/5 averaged to 4)

Kendall works as a mechanic at Peter’s Garage. One day, a vintage Mustang with a sexy owner roars into the shop with a muffler that’s shot. The car’s owner is Barton Willis III, and he starts hitting on Kendall immediately. The mechanic never knew what hit him. Barton has to leave his car for repairs, and he talks Ken into giving him a lift home. That one ride is going to change Ken’s life forever.

Okay, so this is my first Sean Michael novel. I’ve heard a lot about him and his books, I know he’s popular, so I thought I would see what the hype is all about for myself.

I’ll start out by saying this about that—he isn’t a bad writer, far from it. But I wouldn’t call him particularly good either. And I’ll explain that, before all you SM fans take umbrage, which you probably will anyway.

First, this book is 90% sex and maybe 10% plot. That’s way overbalanced in the direction of smut. Which is fine, if it’s smut you’re looking for. My mistake, as it isn’t labeled as such. Now, I’m not a prude, far from it, and I have no problem with explicit sex. Love it, honestly. But there comes a point when there’s too much of it. And this book easily reached that point. There is hardly a scene that doesn’t have sex in it. Even good sex gets old if you’re getting beaten in the head with it.

When it comes to the plot, it’s weak as hell. Which leads to my next gripe – lack of any sort of character development. He never fleshes out these characters. And this book also falls into the dreaded insta-love category. Again, I have no problem with insta-love, if it makes sense. But there should be some reasoning, logic, or something other than I see you, I love you. Barton seems like a nice guy. He has loads of money, which comes in handy ‘cause he can lavish it on the poor mechanic. The mechanic, Ken, is very deeply closeted, and was sent to a gay healing camp over several summers as a youth. He also served in the military, during the time of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. However, as a character, I found him to be weakly written. In fact, his strongest scene is the first one, when he meets Barton. After that, once he’s under Barton’s thumb and influence, he almost disappears as a person, and becomes more of a stereotype, sounding at times like a sleepwalker, or as if he had mental issues, although I hate to put it that way.

The romance is unbelievable, part of that insta-love syndrome. I have no idea what attracts Barton to Ken, although I can see attraction from Ken’s point of view better. I think if you worry about it too much, you’re overthinking it. And this book doesn’t stand up to much thinking about, you’re just supposed to accept the insta-love and go with it.

Warning: this book contains sounding. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, you might want to look it up before you read it. I had heard of it, never read it until now.

Second warning: This book is filled with dubious consent, and this totally makes my skin crawl. I do understand dubious consent, and in some contexts, it works. But not when the person involved keeps saying no (which Ken does) and Barton just rides roughshod over him, telling him he knows better, he knows what’s good for Ken, and so forth and so on. No, dude, just no! That is wrong on many levels. No means no, not what I think is best for you. It’s immaterial that Ken accepted it after the fact. What counts is he said no, and his wishes were ignored.

“You can deny it all you want, I know what you need.”  That’s just an example of Barton’s philosophy.

We really see little of the plot outside of their bedroom antics, which cover all the basics and then some. He had the chance to make something really nice out of this story, it had potential. But he stuck with what I assume to be his formula, and let the opportunity pass him by.

I’d also like to mention that, at least in the copy I read, the editing is sloppy, which surprised me, as it’s an Amber Quill book. They are usually better than that.

So here is my dilemma. I’m sure his fans will eat this up, assuming all of his books are the same way. So in scoring it for its intended audience, it probably rates 5 stars. However, in my opinion, it is lackluster and wanting in too many areas to rate more than a three. So I’ll compromise and give it 4.

Will I read more by Sean Michael? Doubtful. Not that I think he’s bad, and yeah, the sex was hot. But when all is said and done, it just wasn’t memorable, and the characters were forgettable, and I think he is doing himself a disservice if this is what he’s putting out when I think he can do better. Granted, that’s just my opinion, you have to decide for yourselves. But frankly, there are too many better authors out there to go back to this one, even to get off with.
