Wednesday Briefs: In Pieces #59 (14.4)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Salvation is in Lake Charles, but they have a free night. Once they meet with their manager, that is. A little relaxation by the pool seems to be the order of the day. See what's up with the guys in this week's chapter of In Pieces. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them. Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

In Pieces #59 (14.4)

“See anything interesting?” Ben asked, shading his eyes with his free hand as he squinted up at the siblings. Ryan thought the walk had done them good. They both seemed pretty happy and relaxed, even after the long drive to Lake Charles.

“We saw a lot of places to eat, a couple of bars,” Abby said. “Some interesting shops too. If we find time to go shopping.”

“We have all night,” Ben reminded her. “After we meet with Marge, we can do whatever we like. Let’s see what we feel like doing then, okay?”

“Sounds like a plan,” Aiden said. Ryan honestly didn’t care what they did. A night with Ben sounded like heaven.

“Don’t forget you promised to get Ryan a Speedo,” Abby said with a mischievous grin. Ryan felt his cheeks heat. He pretended he didn’t hear her, but Aiden chuckled.

“That’s up to Ryan,” was all Ben said, even as he squeezed Ryan’s hand.

“Told you we’d find them at the pool,” Keanu commented.  Thank goodness for a change of subject.

Ryan thought Deacon and Keanu seemed very relaxed too, but for entirely different reasons, he knew.

“Hey guys,” Keanu greeted them. “You get the room keys yet?”

“Right here.” Ben patted his pocket.

“Don’t tell me you’re in a hurry to put your clothes away?” Abby asked.

“Isn’t that what you were doing in the back of the van?” Aiden added. “Getting out of your clothes?”

Keanu laughed while Deacon shook his head and rolled his eyes. “You’re all incorrigible. Maybe a guy would like to take a hot shower, or brush his teeth, or something?”

“Or something,” Keanu echoed. Ryan got the feeling that the or something was probably the primary reason for Keanu’s haste, not the shower.

Hearing a sudden ding, Ryan pulled out his phone, wondering if Cassie had texted him, but there was nothing there. He glanced toward Ben, who already held his phone, reading the screen.

“All that’s gotta wait for now, guys. Marge just texted. She’s waiting for us at a Mexican buffet that’s not too far from here. Dinner’s on her.”

“Best kind of meal there is,” Keanu quipped. Ryan could understand how he felt. When you didn’t have a lot of money, you appreciated being taken out to eat any chance you got.

“I think I remember seeing that place,” Abby said. “We can just walk there from here. It’s not far at all.”

“Sounds like a lot of exertion,” Keanu started to complain, but Deacon interrupted smoothly.

“After all that exertion you and I just expended, I think we can handle a short walk, lover boy.”

Ryan had to work to hide his smile, but he noticed Aiden and Abby made no effort to conceal their grins. Neither did Deacon.

“If I eat too much, are you going to carry me back?” Keanu faced Deacon, his hands on his hips, head cocked.

“If you eat that much, you’ll need to walk it off anyway, won’t you?” He slid an arm around Keanu then turned toward the twins. “Lead on, MacDuff. We’ll be right behind you.” Ryan noticed Deacon’s hand snake down Keanu’s back until it rested on his ass, at which point Keanu stopped protesting. Deacon sure knew how to handle his man.

Time to go. Ryan unfolded himself from the lounge chair then held his hand toward Ben and helped him up, taking advantage of their proximity to kiss him. “Think we look okay?” he asked Ben. He wanted to make a good first impression on Marge.

“You look amazing,” was Ben’s reply. “Will I do, you think?”

“I think you’re beautiful,” Ryan replied.

“What about me, Abs?” Aiden suddenly queried his sister in a high falsetto, one hand pressed against his chest, the other against his forehead dramatically. “What do you think about me?”

“You? I think you’re hopeless,” Abby deadpanned, reducing them all to helpless laughter. “But you’re my hopeless and I wouldn’t trade you for anything,” she added, taking his arm. “I wonder if this place serves drinks? I could go for a margarita.”

“You know something? That does sound good,” Aiden said.

Ryan had to agree with him.  Ben reached for Ryan’s hand, twining their fingers, as they followed closely behind the others.

to be continued
