Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Well, talk about awkward! Roy and Dustin bump into each other, and Roy's date seems to know them both. How will this pan out? Find out in this week's episode of The Sheriff! Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what they are up to. Their links follow my tale!  Enjoy!

The Sheriff #11 (3.6)

Dustin was more than a little confused to find himself being held upright by none other than the standoffish sheriff himself. And who was this woman grinning at him like she knew him? Then recollection hit him. The overly handsy one from the bar, the one Jordan had blessedly rescued him from. But what was she doing with Marshall and Lee and Roy?

Ignoring her, he nodded to Marshall and Lee. “Hey there.”  He glanced up at Roy, wondering how long he was going to keep holding him like that. Not that he was complaining, mind you. This was the most civil behavior he’d gotten out of Roy yet.

As if the sheriff had suddenly realized how close their proximity was, Roy took a quick step back. “Sorry, I didn’t see you there,” he mumbled.

“No harm done,” Dustin said good-naturedly. He was in too good a mood to let this minor incident dampen his spirits. His date was going very well. In fact, he and Jordan were about to leave the bar, and he had hopes…

“Hi Dustin,” Marshall quickly spoke up. “Small world. You want to join us?”

Dustin glanced from Marshall to Lee, and saw nothing but approbation on the older man’s face. Maybe, under other circumstances, he would have taken them up on their offer. But not tonight.

“I would,” he said, “but I’m here with a date, and we were just about to leave. Maybe another time?”

“Sure,” Lee said. “Sounds good. You two have a good evening.”

“Thanks. See you guys later. ‘Night, Sheriff,” he added almost as an afterthought, but he didn’t wait for a response from Roy as he continued on his way to the table where Jordan waited for him. Just looking at Jordan was intoxicating. He was smoking hot, super exciting, a lot of fun…and he was plainly in to Dustin.

They’d been sitting quietly at a table away from the crowd. What began as subtle touches grew bolder, with Jordan’s tongue gliding across the exposed portions of Dustin’s skin until he thought he might explode. Just when he thought he’d lose control, Jordan had suggested they leave. Dustin quickly agreed and headed to the men’s room to calm down and clear his head.

And then the incident with Roy had occurred.

He shook that off as Jordan rose to meet him.

“Hey handsome, you ready to go?”

“I’m all yours. Where should we go?” He didn’t want to admit he lived with his cousin, not yet. As far as he knew, Denver was home, and that was potentially awkward.

But Jordan had all the answers. “Why don’t we go to my place, hmmm?”

“Wait a minute,” Dustin said, frowning. “Don’t you, um…I mean, I thought you lived with your mother?” That wasn’t a situation he wanted to be in, if his mama figured out what her baby boy was up to. She probably had no idea he was gay. She seemed rather clueless in most regards.

“Hell no.” Jordan laughed. “I have my own apartment. It’ll just be you and me, I promise.”

Dustin relaxed at the sound of that. This night was looking up more and more.

to be continued
