Wednesday Briefs: In Pieces #69 (17.2)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Everything is going beautifully at Heavens Above. Ryan is feeling pretty good, and feels this is where he really belongs. He wants nothing more than to be with Ben for the rest of their lives. Maybe they should make their relationship permanent? See what's going on in this week's chapter of In Pieces. Don't forget to check out the other Briefers and see what's up with them! Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

In Pieces #69 (17.2)

When the first set ended, the band took a break and the dance club switched to a computerized music system. Ryan expected Ben to take a seat at the table he was sharing with Marge and relax before the next set, but apparently Ben had other ideas. Standing in front of Ryan, he reached for his hand as he swung his hips to the rhythm of the music that surged around them.

“C’mon, baby, let’s you and me shake it up a little!’

Ben led him into the crowd until they found an open spot. Ryan didn’t consider himself a great dancer, but tonight he didn’t care. Tonight was perfect, and he wouldn’t want it any other way. He followed Ben’s lead, mirroring his movements carefully. No one else was paying attention to them anyway, he realized. If anything, they were admiring Ben, and that was okay. Expected even.

Ryan wasn’t surprised to spot Deacon and Keanu dancing not too far from them, as well as Aiden and Abby. Abby looked to be in her element. The two siblings moved together as if they’d been doing this all their lives, each twin perfectly in sync with the other. Maybe he and Ben would become that way, someday.

There was so much he wanted to share with Ben, so much to experience. Ryan knew without a doubt that he wanted this to last forever… wanted him and Ben to last forever. For better or worse… come what may…

With a start, Ryan realized he wanted to marry Ben, something he’d never even considered before,  not with anyone else. Take the vows that would bind them together in ways that no one could tear apart. But would Ben feel the same way?

Just at that moment, as if scripted in some romantic film, the fast-paced music gave way to something much slower and sensual. Ben wasted no time in drawing Ryan closer, hooking his arm around Ryan’s waist. “Want to receive my sacraments?” he whispered hotly in Ryan’s ear just before he licked it.

A tingle surged through Ryan. If they were alone, the things he could do and say… but not here, not now. If he gave in to these delicious sensations, his thoughts would be derailed, and he wanted to focus on what he wanted to say.

“Ben…”

“Yes, baby?” Ben was dancing oh so close now, his breath hot on Ryan’s neck, even as his fingers skittered down Ryan’s back, over his buttocks.

Ryan drew back far enough to be able to look into Ben’s baby blues, although they were violet now, due to the contact lenses he wore. “I love you so much,” he said in a voice choked with emotion. “So very much.”

“You know I love you too, you’re everything to me,” Ben said in reply. His lips were so close to Ryan’s that his words vibrated against them. “My life begins and ends with you, Ryan. Always has. Please don’t ever leave me. No matter what.”

Why did Ben sound so… hell, he couldn’t describe what he heard in Ben’s voice.  Deep love, yes, but something more… almost a sense of desperation. But what did Ben have to be desperate about?
They needed privacy, and they needed it right now. This wasn’t the proper place for what he intended to do. “Let’s go outside,” he suggested. “There’s something I want to say to you.”

Ben didn’t make an immediate reply. Ryan’s heart felt as though it might beat out of his chest, waiting for a response, until suddenly Ben kissed him, long and hard, with a fierce passion. Ryan felt himself moan into the kiss, felt Ben’s own moan. And then Ben released him, gazing at him for a moment. He took Ryan’s hand in his, grasped it firmly, then turned, navigating a path through the dancing throng. Ryan noticed with relief that they were headed toward the door. He followed silently, turning over words and phrases in his mind, searching for just the right one.

So focused was he on his impending proposal that he wasn’t prepared to have Ben come to a sudden halt. He ran up against his back before he could stop himself.  As he automatically started to apologize, he glanced up to find a familiar figure standing in front of them. What was Cameron doing here? Was Ben expecting him? Ben’s first words dispelled that notion.

“I didn’t know you were coming,” Ben said. “But we were just headed outside. Catch you in a few.”
Was it Ryan’s imagination, or did Cameron seem kind of jittery? Nervous, even. Maybe he was just surprised at running into them like this. Ryan decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. Besides, he had more important things on his mind than Cameron. He wasn’t sure entirely trusted Salvation’s backer, but that wasn’t really his call to make. At least not until he had a tangible reason to mistrust him.

“Then I’ll get a drink,” Cameron announced, giving Ben a quick once-over. “Looking good as always.” He winked somewhat lasciviously before disappearing in the direction of the bar.

Ben turned toward Ryan, frowning. “Something feels off,” he said. “But I don’t know what.”

“I think you’re right but I’m not sure what either,” Ryan agreed.

“Sorry, we were going out.” Ben squeezed Ryan’s hand. At least Cameron hadn’t ruined their plans. Now he could propose to Ben, and hopefully Ben would say yes. The thought was both frightening and intoxicating.

They’d almost reached the door when it opened, admitting new customers. They stood aside to make room for them to pass. All but one made their way into the dance club, laughing and chattering together. Guess they’d have to go around this one to get outside.

But Ben stood frozen before him.

Ryan looked past him with apprehension, staring at the roadblock to their progress. Then his eyes grew wide with comprehension.

Liza!

Wednesday Briefs: In Pieces #68 (17.1)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

It's been nice having time off with Ben, but now it's back to work. Salvation is playing a dance club, and everything is going well. See what the boys are up to in this week's chapter of Salvation. In Pieces #68 (17.1)

Once they reached the dance club, Ryan helped the band to set up, his heart light, his mood upbeat. The name of the venue was Heavens Above, and it was decorated with a stars and planets motif, as well as the astrological signs. The club permitted patrons under twenty-one to enter, but they weren’t allowed to purchase alcohol. The club manager was a pretty black woman who looked to be somewhere around forty. She welcomed them warmly, told them her name was T’Neisha, and to let her know if they needed anything.

Marge secured a table for the two of them, near the stage. Once they were set up, Ben joined them for a few minutes, pulling a chair as close as he could get to Ryan’s. Taking Ryan’s hand in his, he twined their fingers, then raised their joint hands to his lips, kissing the back of Ryan’s hand. Even in the bright lights of the club, his eyes shone with his devotion to Ryan.

All too soon, it was time for the show to begin. Ryan reluctantly released Ben’s hand, but was rewarded when Ben rose and closed the slight gap between them, bending down to lay a serious liplock on Ryan. Nearby customers cheered and catcalled, but there was no malice in their tones.

“See you soon, sexy,” Ben murmured in Ryan’s ear once he’d released his lips. He headed up to the stage, shimmying for Ryan’s benefit, which produced more applause. Ryan heard someone comment,

“I wish I had a priest like that!” while someone else remarked, “He’s so lucky, what a sexy guy!”

Yes, Ben was definitely that, Ryan acknowledged. And he was all Ryan’s.

“Hey, Ryan, want a drink?”

How bad was it that he’d forgotten Marge was at the table too? He seemed to have tunnel vision whenever Ben was around. Marge wore a huge grin, and he knew she understood his preoccupation with Ben.

“Thanks, not right now,” he said. “I’m good.”

“I know Ben thinks so.” Marge chuckled. “Be right back.” She melted into the crowd, heading toward the bar at the back of the club.

Ryan removed the camera he’d hung around his neck, and began to take photos, being sure to save them in a separate folder he’d named for the venue.

“Man, you have a great view here.” A voice broke into his reveries. Startled, he turned to see a young girl, maybe fifteen or sixteen, standing beside his table. “Mind if I sit here for a few and watch the band with you? You must really like them a lot, right? Is it okay to take their pictures? Like do you have to get permission or anything?” Not waiting for an answer, she slid into an empty chair, still chattering away. Ryan couldn’t help but stare at her, wondering when she was going to take a breath amid her landslide of words.

“My name’s Lilah, how are you? It’s short for Delilah, but no one ever calls me that. I think my mother got it out of the Bible. You know that Samson and Delilah thing? She thought it might make me good at handling men or something, I dunno. Parents? Who knows what they’re thinking, right?”
She cocked her head and peered at him from behind bright purple eyeglasses. “Are you okay?”

“Um…. Yeah, I’m fine,” he managed to get out. On an impulse, he aimed the camera at her and took a quick picture. Belatedly, he realized maybe he should have asked her permission before he took the photo. “Sorry, was that okay?”

“That all depends, what do you want to do with it? Well, it’s not like I’m naked or anything, not like I ever would, but still, once has to be careful about that sort of thing, you know?”

His blood turned to ice until he saw her smile, and he realized she was joking. That wasn’t something he was used to getting, especially from girls.

“About the pictures,” he hastily interjected while she seemed to be between sentences. “It’s perfectly fine. I’m with the band, you see. I’m supposed to take photos.”

“Oh, cool.” She beamed at him. “What’s your name? I’m Lilah. Oh wait, I said that, didn’t I?” She giggled. “I didn’t know you’re with them. Do you play anything?”

“My name’s Ryan,” he responded. “I’m not a musician, though, I’m a writer. I’m writing a book about the tour.”

“How awesome. So that’s why you’re taking pictures, now I get it. Do you think you’re going to use that picture of me in your book? That would be amazing! I would tell all my friends and they’d be soooo jealous, and I’d make them all buy copies of the book.” She took a deep breath before continuing. “So, who do you like the most in the band? I mean, like who’s your favorite? I bet it’s Aiden, ‘cause he’s just do dreamy. His sister is cute, but he’s cuter. Besides, she’s a girl. Think he might think I’m cute? Oh my goodness, I’d just die if I thought that, but wouldn’t that be so awesome?”

Ryan found it hard to follow all her perambulations, but he did realize she was definitely under age, and he had no idea what Aiden’s type might be. “I honestly couldn’t say,” he managed to slip in when he spotted a slight break in the conversation/monologue.

This girl was definitely high-spirited, he had to give her that. And somewhat distracting, as she’d managed to garner all his attention. But he suspected Ben wouldn’t mind, since it was for the good of the band. But he seriously needed to get back to work.

Just then salvation arrived—no pun intended—in the form of another young girl in a pink Lolita dress. “Lilah, come here, you’ll never guess who just called me?” Both girls squealed then headed off to discuss this new development. Ryan sighed in relief.

Wednesday Briefs: In Pieces #60 (15.1)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

The boys have arrived in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and first order of business is a meeting with their manager, Marge. She texts them to meet her at a Mexican buffet not far from their motel. Ryan is a little nervous, wondering what Marge is like. She seems nice on the phone, but appearances can be deceiving. See what's up in this week's chapter of In Pieces. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them! Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

In Pieces #60 (15.1)

The restaurant wasn’t very far at all from the motel, probably one of the reasons why Salvation’s manager had chosen to meet there. Even Keanu had to admit it wasn’t a bad walk, but the admission had come after a certain amount of cajoling from Deacon. The interior was dark and cool, and the décor reminded Ryan of a Mexican cantina. Colorful serapes and sombreros decorated the walls, and piñatas hung from the ceiling.  Two large buffet tables formed an L shape in the middle of the room. The most enticing aromas were coming from them. Ryan’s mouth began to water in anticipation.

“Over here, guys!” a brassy voice called out from the far side of the restaurant.

“There’s Marge. C’mon, I’ll introduce you.” Holding Ryan’s hand, Ben led him toward the rather large woman who was vigorously waving at them. Even from this distance, her enthusiasm was contagious, as was her large smile. They had barely reached the table at which she sat when she enveloped Ben in a large bear hug, lifting him from his feet, forcing Ryan to relinquish his hand.

“Hi honey,” she greeted him as she set him back on his feet with a kiss on his cheek. She turned to each of the members of Salvation in turn and accorded them the same treatment. Ryan noticed not one of them seemed surprised by her actions, or taken aback in any way.  Once she’d greeted them all, she turned to Ryan, who felt suddenly shy.

“This has to be our writer. Ben, you sure picked a looker.” She winked at Ryan, whose face suddenly flamed. Before he had a chance to react, she’d hugged him tightly and kissed his cheek. “Nice to meet you, Ryan!

Ryan couldn’t place the scent which clung to Marge, but he found it comforting and soothing, much like her touch.  “Nice to meet you too, Marge.”

Marge turned to Deacon and Keanu. “Mind pushing that table over here so we can sit together?” she asked. Moments later, she got her wish, and they all seated themselves.

Right after that, a waiter bustled up with a tray full of water glasses, which he distributed to them. “Hi, my name is Julio, and I’ll be your server today. Are you here for the buffet or would you like to look at the menu?” he asked.

“Buffet,” everyone said in unison, then laughed.

“What about drinks? We have a special on margaritas, if you’re interested.”

The general consensus was that everyone was interested.

“Excellent.” Julio nodded. “I’ll have those to you in just a few minutes. Help yourself to the buffet. Plates and utensils are at the end of each table. If you need anything else, please let me know.” He withdrew, presumably in the direction of the bar.

“Let’s get some food and then we can gab,” Marge said, and no one argued with her.
Ryan and Ben hung back a little, letting the others get in line first. Marge stood beside them, also waiting. She gave Ryan a speculative look. “So, what do you think of them so far?”

“I think they’re amazing,” Ryan blurted out. “They’re all fantastic, and their music, it’s…. it’s awesome. Especially Ben. He has an incredible voice…”

Ryan let his voice trail away, wondering if he’d said too much, but somehow when it came to Ben, he couldn’t help himself. As if he was making up for lost time between them. But he honestly believed in the band, and he found it hard to contain his enthusiasm. He noticed Marge glance between him and Ben. Was it his imagination or was Ben blushing too?

“These guys are my favorite clients,” she confided. “They are a great band and they’re gonna go places, I just know it. This is only the start of something big, you’ll see.”

“I think you’re right,” Ryan said. “Salvation’s headed right to the top.”

“You might be a little prejudiced,” Ben said shyly. Ryan wondered if maybe he should exercise a little common sense and skip the PDAs for now, to keep from embarrassing Ben. But then he felt Ben’s arm wind possessively around his waist and that plan went right out the window.

“You have no idea how excited Ben was when you agreed to take the job,” Marge said. “I’ve never seen him smile so much. I knew then you must be special to him.”

Marge’s words went straight to Ryan’s heart. Everything was working out so perfectly. What could possibly go wrong now they were together?

“C’mon, let’s grab some grub.” Marge headed to one of the buffet tables.

Ben didn’t move immediately, though. He leaned in to Ryan and whispered, “She’s right, I’ve never been so happy, Ryan. I love you so much.” He kissed Ryan’s cheek gently. “Let’s see if this tastes half as good as it smells.”  Ryan’s head was spinning as they headed to the buffet and lined up behind Marge.

Wednesday Briefs: In Pieces #47 (12.1)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Last time, Salvation was in Houma, playing in an underground club, and Abby's erstwhile boyfriend Brandon decided to show up. He didn't make a good impression on Ryan, and Ben and Aiden don't seem particularly fond of him either. But it's another day, another show. See what's up in this week's chapter of In Pieces. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them!  Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

In Pieces #47 (12.1)

Ben’s eyelids began to flutter open, accompanied by a soft sound that could have been a moan or a sigh. As he focused his eyes, his crystal blue gaze fell on Ryan, sitting on the edge of the bed, and a luminous smile spread across his face. “You’re up early.” Ryan found Ben’s sleep-hoarse voice sexy.

“A little,” Ryan admitted. “I wanted to surprise you this morning.”

“Surprise me?” Ben struggled into a sitting position. He ran one hand through his bed-tousled hair.

“I made breakfast.” Ryan indicated the table between their beds. Poking about in the kitchen for something to serve Ben breakfast in bed, he’d been lucky enough to find a lap tray in the pantry, as well as a silver cloche. The cover effectively concealed what lay beneath.

“You’re too good to me,” Ben said. “I can’t believe you went to all that trouble… just for me…”

“No trouble,” Ryan assured him. “Not when it comes to you.” That produced another warm smile from Ben.

“I warn you, it’s nothing fancy. I just went with what I could find in the fridge and pantry. I toasted some English muffins, and buttered them. I couldn’t find any eggs, but there was still some of that fruit we had. Strawberries and grapes. Plus I squeezed some orange juice.”

Ben made no immediate reply. Had he done something wrong? But then Ben swiped at one eye and sniffled slightly. “It all sounds wonderful,” he said softly. “But before I get to that, there’s something I want a lot more.”

“What is it? Anything you want, I’ll get it for you.”

Ben crooked his finger and beckoned to Ryan. “I want you,” he said. “I want to taste your lips.” His own lips parted in mute expectation.

Ryan leaned toward Ben even as Ben moved toward him, their lips meeting gloriously in the middle. Ryan was in heaven. This was how he wanted to start every day, with Ben’s touch.

Ben insisted they share the breakfast Ryan had made. They took turns feeding each other, teasing the succulent strawberries and plump grapes between their lips, kissing each another in between bites. Licking and sucking buttery finger tips. When they were done, they set the dishes aside, slid between the sheets and made love again.

The sound of running water and laughter woke Ryan. Momentarily confused, he quickly realized what he was hearing was Keanu and Deacon, carrying on in the bathroom the two bedrooms shared. Damn, he and Ben must have fallen asleep. He rolled over and grabbed his cell phone from the bedside table. Almost one o’clock. Where had the day gone?

He tried to remember what was on Salvation’s schedule. He knew Sunday was open, but weren’t they playing tonight? Some place in New Orleans?

“Sounds like someone’s having a good time.”

Ryan glanced back at Ben, who was obviously awake and very much amused at what he was hearing. Ryan was less impressed. He’d hoped to jump in the shower, and he was sure Ben would want one too, some time before the show.

“Is it wrong to hope they’re almost done?” Ryan asked.

Ben scooted closer to Ryan. He threw one leg across Ryan’s, bringing their crotches into closer proximity. “We could always use Cameron’s bathroom, since he isn’t here.”

Ryan didn’t like that idea, but for no reason he could put a finger on. He just didn’t trust the man, and maybe it was the idea of being inside his personal space that was so distasteful. Luckily for him, the sound of falling water suddenly ceased. Moments afterward, he heard footsteps. Then the door into Keanu and Deacon’s bedroom slammed shut, followed by silence.

“Looks like it’s our turn after all,” Ben said. He rubbed himself seductively against Ryan, as if he intended to dry hump him. Ryan couldn’t help but moan. He couldn’t resist Ben’s siren call, no matter how many times they made love, or how recently.

“Don’t you have a show tonight?” Ryan tried to steer his lover’s mind toward business, but he suspected that was a losing battle.

“Sure do,” Ben said. “But that’s later. This is here and now.”  He reached between him and grasped Ryan’s semi-hard cock. God, Ben made saying no impossible.

“C’mon, let’s see how much hot water’s left.” He abruptly rolled off Ryan and sashayed his way toward the bathroom. What else could Ryan do but follow him?

Wednesday Briefs: In Pieces #46 (11.5)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Brandon is not making a great first impression on Ryan, the more he sees of him. It's obvious that Aiden and Ben are less than impressed themselves. Ryan wonders what Abby sees in the guy. See what's happening in this week's chapter of In Pieces. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them! Their links follow my tale! Emjoy!

In Pieces #46 (11.5)

Before Ben had a chance to reply, Aiden arrived at the table, carefully balancing three frosty mugs of beer.  Ryan started to reach for one, thinking to relieve Aiden of some of his burden, but Aiden managed to set all three on the table without spilling a drop before he turned toward Brandon.

“Where’s Abby?” he asked, almost belligerently.

“In the little girls’ room,” Brandon replied.  “Powdering her nose, or whatever females do in such situations.” He grinned at Aiden, a smile which Ryan found rather predatory. Aiden didn’t return the smile. He made no move to take a seat, either. Ryan got the distinct impression he was willing Brandon to leave, or if he didn’t go, he intended to take his beer and put some distance between himself and Abby’s boyfriend.

An awkward silence encompassed the four men, one Ryan didn’t feel entitled to break, as the newcomer to the group. He wondered if Brandon created this kind of tension wherever he went, or was it just with the members of Salvation? Brandon  was drumming his fingers across the tabletop, as if he hadn’t a care in the world, Aiden was glancing around the club, as if searching for his missing twin, while Ben openly glared at Brandon. Not quite how Ryan had envisioned spending the break between sets with Ben.  The Guinness sat, untouched, on the table.

The seconds ticked by, the noises from the other people in the club a mere background noise around them. Just when Ryan thought he couldn’t stand it any longer, he heard a sharp ding. Brandon pulled out his phone and glanced at it. “Ah, there’s my lady love now,” he said. He quickly typed a reply and replaced the phone in his pocket. He unfolded himself from his seat with no sign of any immediate urgency.  “Sorry to leave such riveting company, but she requests my presence outside. What else can I do but obey? Catch you all later.” He winked, then began to amble in the direction of the back of the club but turned at the last moment, as if a sudden thought had struck him.

“By the way, Aid, don’t wait up for Abby tonight. I’ve got a motel room here in town, we’ll be spending the night there.” He didn’t wait for a reply, but spun on his heel and slouched away.

“Motherfucker,” Aiden mumbled.

“Yeah,” Ben agreed. All three men reached for their beer at once and took a good, long drink.
Aiden replaced his mug then pulled out his phone and began to furiously text. Ryan could just imagine who he was texting. He received a reply moments later and scowled at the screen before putting up the phone.

“Something wrong?” Ryan inquired.

“She told me to behave. He’s the one she should be telling that to.” He glanced in the direction in which Brandon had disappeared into the crowd. Ryan could just feel his inner debate—should he go out there or not, try to talk some sense into Abby. Apparently he decided against it, probably realizing he’d see her again when they started the next set. Confrontation postponed.

Ryan reached for Ben’s hand and squeezed it.  “Don’t let him get to you, he’s not worth it.” He felt Ben release a long sigh, before he returned Ryan’s squeeze.

“I know you’re right, but I see how he is. I mean, he was hitting on you, with Abby right there and everything.  She deserves better than that.”

“I totally agree,” Aiden spoke up. “She deserves some happiness in her life, not to be chased after by sleazes like him and Cameron.”

“Aiden, I promise you this,” Ben said solemnly. “When we no longer need his support, we’re done with him. And with anyone else like him. Then maybe Abby will tell Brandon to go fuck himself, she doesn’t have to take his shit.”

“I think she would dump him now but she lacks self-confidence in herself. As a person, and as a woman.” He shrugged. “Having your twin brother tell you how great you are doesn’t make quite the same impact, I get that.”

“Yeah, but you’re not going to quit telling her that, are you?” Ben said.

“Hell no. She’s my sister. I’d do anything for her.”

“So would I,” Ben said, and Ryan echoed his sentiments.

Aiden smiled at them both.  “You guys are great. I appreciate your support, more than I can ever tell you.”

“Support? What kind of support?”

At the sound of a familiar voice, Ryan looked up to find Deacon and Keanu standing beside them. They held almost empty glasses in their hands, and they seemed to be in high spirits, faces flushed. Ryan could almost imagine what they might have been up to. Not that he blamed them. Given the choice with Ben, he’d have gone for it too. There was always later.

“Hey, do I need to knock somebody out? Somebody causing trouble?” Keanu raised a clenched fist, as if to demonstrate his willingness to leap into the fray for his friends’ sake.

Laughter broke the pent-up tension rather effectively.

“Not tonight, slugger,” Aiden said. “But I’ll keep you posted.”

“And on that note, I think we should get ready for the next set,” Ben said. “Want to text Abby to come in?”

“Yeah, sure.” Aiden pulled out his phone, as they all stood.

“You going to take more pics?” Ben asked Ryan. He shook his head.

“I think I have more than enough,” he said.

Ben smiled. “Good. Stand by the stage, where I can see you?”

“You got it,” Ryan said. He raised three fingers and swiped them across his chest. “On my honor.” It felt silly to say scout’s honor, as he’d never been a Boy Scout, considering their stance on homosexuals. He’d never felt the loss.

“Then let’s do this.” Ben pulled him close for a last lingering kiss before they headed toward the stage once more.

Wednesday Briefs: In Pieces #43 (11.2)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Time to get to work. Ryan realizes he's forgotten his laptop, his head is so high in the clouds in love, but there's nothing he can do about it now. At least he has his camera. As Salvation plays, Ryan takes killer photos. See what's going on in this week's chapter of In Pieces. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what they're up to! Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

In Pieces #43 (11.2)

They devoured everything Ryan and Abby had brought in record time. Everyone seemed to be in high spirits, looking forward to that night’s concert. When they were finished, they tossed their trash in the can  then headed back inside. The club was pretty packed now. Ryan thought it was awesome that so many people had come to see them play.  Surely this was a sign that Salvation was on its way to success. Fame, fortune… the sky’s the limit.

As they headed toward the stage, maneuvering their way between the tables and through the milling people, Ryan knew he probably wouldn’t be able to get a table, not as crowded as it was. He’d just have to roam the crowd, taking pictures, although that would make taking notes difficult. He couldn’t very well type standing up.

Shit. He realized with a sudden twinge of guilt that he’d forgotten his laptop back at Cameron’s house. What was he thinking? He wasn’t, that was the problem. Too over the moon, head over heels in love with Ben to pay attention to what he needed to be doing. He was lucky he’d remembered his camera case, which he’d slung over his shoulder.

When they reached the stage, most  everyone  jumped on, heading to their respective positions. Ben remained at Ryan’s side. He gave Ryan a troubled look. “You okay?”

“Yeah, fine.” Ryan forced confidence into his voice he was far from feeling. “I think I’m just gonna get some shots of you guys from out in the crowd, then get closer in.”

“Yeah, good idea.” Ben nodded.

Ryan started to offer to fetch drinks if they needed them, then remembered the band had water bottles with them already. Maybe when they took a break between sets, he and Ben could grab a drink together. Assuming he wasn’t overwhelmed by his fans. If he was, Ryan would just have to live with it. This was Ben’s dream. He wasn’t about to rain on that or ruin it for him by being too possessive.
“Earth to Ryan.” Ben’s voice drew him out of his reverie.

“Oh, sorry,” he apologized. “I must have been daydreaming.” He laughed a little self-consciously.

“As long as it was about me,” Ben said with a wink.

“No one else,” Ryan promised, which garnered him a huge smile from his lover.

“That’s what I like to hear. Don’t go too far, sexy, I’ll be looking for you.” Ben pulled Ryan in for a long, deep kiss. People standing nearby broke into spontaneous applause and cheers. By the time Ben released him, he wore a great big smile which Ryan couldn’t help but return.

“Knock’em dead,” Ryan said. “Remember that I love you.”

“Love you too.” Ben leapt up onto the stage to cheers from the audience. Blowing Ryan a quick kiss, he grabbed the mic from the stand.  Hello Houma. We are Salvation and we’re gonna rock your world!”

The group launched immediately into their first number. Ryan loved the way Deacon’s keyboard sounded like a pipe organ, adding to the almost church-like quality of the music. The reverberations of the two guitars lent the song a definite metallic edge, along with Abby’s impressive drumming. As for Ben, his beautiful voice was otherworldly and enchanting. The light show was pretty impressive too. Maybe when they had a bigger budget to work with, they could add something of a gothic element. Ryan had seen a lot of concerts where the bands displayed computer graphics in the background to accompany the lights. Maybe he’d suggest that to Ben later. Being part of Salvation was exhilarating, something beyond his wildest dreams. Maybe this would put his writing career back on track too. Being with Ben was going to make all the difference in the world, he just knew it. With Ben, he could do anything.

Time to get to work.

Ryan pulled out his camera and concentrated on taking shots of the band first. He loved the way they dressed, each member with his own individual persona. Ben was the priest, of course, and Abby the nun. Aiden was dressed as a monk, although he drew the line, as he’d told Ben, at adding a tonsure, even for the sake of art. He wore a long brown robe with a hood, although he didn’t wear it up all the time. Probably got too hot under the lights. A chain link belt girded his waist, from which dangled a large Coptic cross. Keanu, as the bishop of the group, wore black robes adorned with gold buttons and crosses, topped with a high black bishop’s hat. His better half, Deacon, wore the scarlet robes of a cardinal, including a cape and a red skullcap. Ryan thought Ben looked the best of all of them, but he knew he might be more than a little prejudiced on that point.

The audience was more than appreciative, cheering each and every song.  Many of them stood and swayed, singing along with the refrains, adding an almost church-like atmosphere. Ryan knew he couldn’t possibly use all the pictures he was taking in the book, but he could use the best of them.  He worked at getting pictures of the band and the audience both from different angles, utilizing the zoom feature of his camera.

Caught up in what he was doing, he backed up to get a wider shot of the stage and unexpectedly hit something solid. Ryan started to fall. His first thought was not to fall on the camera.

Shit.

Before he could regain his balance, he felt strong arms circle his waist, holding him tight.

“Careful there, handsome,” a low voice came from behind him.

Ryan found himself back on his feet, facing his savior. His first impression was of long red hair and deep blue eyes and a smile that went on forever.

“Never had someone as cute as you fall for me before,” the strange said in a long low drawl.

Wednesday Briefs: In Pieces #42 (11.1)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Salvation is playing at an underground nightclub in Houma, Louisiana known as The Dive. Ryan and Abby have brought back some food from a nearby Cajun restaurant, so the band can eat before they go on. So far, so good, see what's happening in this week's chapter of In Pieces. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them! Their links follow my tale!

In Piecs #42 (11.1)

The Dive was already starting to fill with people by the time they returned with the food. A bouncer was on duty at the front door, collecting the cover charge.  He eyed them as they approached.

“We’re part of the band,” Abby explained. He gave her nun’s outfit a quick onceover and waved them in.

Adjusting his eyes to the dimly lit interior, Ryan scanned his surroundings for Ben and the others. He wondered if they’d be able to find a place where they could eat without the band being mobbed by admirers. Dayglo purple lights highlighted the bar, casting a garish glow on the bartenders.  The floor was filled with a lot of small tables, set close together, many already occupied. On the opposite side of the long narrow room, Ryan spotted the stage. The equipment was already set up. Aiden and Keanu were playing riffs, while Deacon was fiddling with his keyboard.  And there was Ben, just in front of the stage, talking to a large man who stood at least a head taller than him.

“There they are,” Ryan said to Abby, but she’d seen them first and was already halfway to the stage. Ryan headed straight to Ben and the unknown man. As he drew nearer, he noticed the man wore a black kimono, and his dark hair was gathered into a small bun at the nape of his neck. He smiled at Ryan as he approached.

“You must be Ryan,” the man said. “My name’s Leo. Welcome to The Dive.”

Ryan had to juggle the plastic carryout bags  that hung from his arms so he could extend one hand. “Nice to meet you.” He found great pleasure in knowing Ben had mentioned him.

“Is there a place we can grab a quick bite before the show?” Ben asked. “Maybe someplace a little private?”

“Absolutely,” Leo replied. “Right outside the back door.” He gestured toward the rear of the club. “No one ever goes out there. There’s a place to sit and everything.”

“Awesome,” Ben said. “Thanks.”

Ben turned toward the stage, waving one hand to gain everyone’s attention. “Eats are here.” He pointed toward Ryan. “We’re going out the back door so we can eat. C’mon.” Not waiting for a reply, he took half of Ryan’s load, saying, “Here, let me help.” They maneuvered their way through the crowd, naturally drawing attention by the way Ben was dressed, and out the back door. Ryan assumed this was where the staff came on their breaks.  There was a metallic picnic table that looked as though it had once been the property of some state park—garishly green and very heavy duty.  A metal trash can stood nearby that also looked like it had come from the same place.

Ryan and Ben set out the food containers on the table and distributed plates, silverware, and napkins  for the other band members before they took seats one bench . They sat so close together they were almost in each other’s laps.  The others had followed them out. Deacon and Keanu sat together opposite them, as did Abby, while Aiden took a seat beside Ben.

Afraid to have Ben get his priest’s robes dirty before their first set even began, Ryan insisted on hand-feeding Ben the delicious appetizers. He handed them to him, one by one, so intent on what he was doing, he became oblivious to the presence of everyone else. After swallowing each appetizer, Ben licked Ryan’s fingers clean.

“Isn’t that so sweet?” Keanu teased, drawing Ryan’s attention back to the others with a start and a blush. “Maybe you should pre-chew his food too?”

“Shush and open your mouth,” Deacon admonished before Ryan even had a chance to reply. Ryan glanced across the table to find Deacon teasing one of the oysters over Keanu’s lips, brushing across them lightly until they parted then popping the oyster inside. Keanu’s loud moans of satisfaction brought laughter from the others. Deacon winked at Ryan, as if to say we know how to please our men, don’t we?

Ryan glanced at Abby, who gave him a thumbs up. Her look of approval warmed his heart. He turned his attention back to Ben, interspersing bites of food with kisses. Ryan couldn’t remember the last time he’d been so happy.

In Pieces #40 (10.3)

The general consensus of the other members of the band was they’d be fine with whatever Abby and Ryan chose to get, so they decided to go with that.

At her request, Abby drove. Ryan didn’t mind. She knew how to use the GPS system better than he did anyway. He’d never had one before, in St. Louis. When he needed to go somewhere unfamiliar, he relied on Mapquest.  When she put in the address of the restaurant, they learned their destination was only fifteen minutes away. Traffic was light to moderate in this part of Houma, swelling a little as they went. The restaurant was no great shakes at first sight, but judging from the smells that hit their nostrils as soon as they walked in the door, the food was something special. A number of the tables were full, even as late as it was. The atmosphere was relaxed and tension-free. Ryan was sorry they didn’t have time to sit here and enjoy their meal.  Another time, hopefully.

Studying the menu, they decided to get a selection of appetizers: crab claws and stuffed jalapenos, fried pickles and fried cauliflower, as well as oyster brochettes. Just in case someone wanted to satisfy a sweet tooth, they also ordered some funnel fries. If they were still hungry after the show, they could always find something else then, but there was no sense in loading up too much right before they went on. Ryan placed their order, then handed the girl behind the counter the credit card Ben had given him to use, not surprised to see Cameron’s name imprinted on the plastic. Once he gave her his name, they found a table near the order pick-up where they could wait.

“What are those brochettes? I’ve never heard of them,” Ryan confessed.

“I’ve had them before. They’re skewers of oysters and bacon, deep fried, usually served on some kind of toasted bread, with a sauce,” Abby replied.

“Sounds good. I’ll trust your judgment.” He smiled at her.

Abby gave him a long studied look, not saying a word.

“What?” He glanced away, wondering if he’d said something wrong.

“I was just thinking how much you’ve changed in just the few days I’ve known you, Ryan.”

“I have?” He’d picked up a salt shaker, sliding it idly back and forth across the table, from one hand to another. He looked up at her in surprise.

“You seemed nervous and apprehensive at the airport. Kind of unsure of yourself. Not unhappy but not happy, either, if you know what I mean. Now… well, now you’re positively radiant. Not that I don’t know the reason why.”

Ryan’s cheeks warmed. He knew exactly what Abby meant, but he hadn’t realized how apparent his new outlook on life was to the other members of the band. Must be pretty obvious, since they really didn’t know him at all. Not like Ben did.

“Don’t be embarrassed, I think it’s wonderful.” Abby reached out and laid one of her hands over his. “I see how you and Ben look at each other. He’s just as happy as you, trust me. He hasn’t glowed like this in…. well, ever. Not since I’ve known him.”

That was good to know. The thought warmed Ryan, inside and out. He knew he must be flushed pretty red, but he didn’t mind. Abby was hardly judgmental.

“Love is a grand thing.” He couldn’t read her tone, it sounded somewhat enigmatic for all her talk of romance. She squeezed his hand, then withdrew her own.

“Are you in love?” he asked without thinking, then wished he hadn’t spoken. “I’m sorry. That’s none of my business. Forget I asked.”

“No, it’s okay. You can ask me anything.”

He raised his eyes from the table apprehensively. She wasn’t smiling, but she didn’t look angry either.
“I have a boyfriend, if that’s what you mean,” she replied.

That wasn’t exactly an answer to what he’d asked, but remembering Aiden’s rules, he wasn’t about to press the issue with her. Not unless she seemed willing to discuss it.

“Brandon?” he asked. He ran his thumb over the top of the salt shaker. Some of the holes were caked with old salt, he noticed. Maybe the humidity caused that.

“That’s the one,” Abby said lightly. “There’s a chance you might get to meet him tonight. He said if he could, he’d come to the show.” She shrugged, as if his attendance wasn’t of great importance to her one way or another. Ryan wondered what sort of relationship they had. Just thinking about being with Ben made him smile. Shouldn’t she be a little more eager to see this Brandon?

“It’s complicated,” Abby said slowly, as if she’d read his mind. More likely, she could just follow his train of thought. “You see, I’ve been saving money for a while now… to get… the surgery I need…”

Ryan nodded, not sure where this was going, but it answered the question of just what surgeries her dad paid for. Top, but not bottom, apparently.

“Brandon… has different ideas about the surgery then I do. He doesn’t want me to get it.”

That was a surprise. And very confusing. “But… but why… I mean, if it’s something you want…”

“Exactly.” Abby offered him a sad smile. “He tells me he likes that… little extra I have. He doesn’t understand that it isn’t part of who I really am, it’s part of me that should never have existed.”

That made sense, but it was also sad. If this Brandon loved her as she was, why would he want her to keep something was anathema to her? What kind of love was that? Why was it that all the men in her life, other than Aiden, were no good?

“If he doesn’t understand that, then he doesn’t deserve someone as special as you,” Ryan said without thinking.

Abby’s eyes glistened.  A lone tear trickled down her cheek as she offered him a sad smile.

Wednesday Briefs: In Pieces #39 (10.2)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Today, we return to In Pieces, after my tribute to Aaron Burr last week. Ryan and Ben are pretty happy and looking forward to Salvation's next gig at an underground club in Houma. Catch up with them in this week's chapter. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them. Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

In Pieces #39 (10.2)

“What’s on the schedule for tonight?” Ryan asked Ben as they crossed the back lawn, hand in hand.

“We’re playing at a place they call The Dive,” Ben replied. “It’s an underground club in Houma, about an hour and half from here Sorry, we’ll have to go across the bridge again. That’s the fastest way there.” He glanced at Ryan, offering him an apologetic smile that was also filled with concern.

“No worries. It’s not scary at all when I have you beside me,” Ryan said sincerely. He stopped moving and gave Ben a kiss of reassurance. “Besides, it’s time I got over that. I’m not a kid anymore. I’ll be thirty in less than two years.” Sometimes he found it hard to believe he was actually that old, he didn’t feel any different then when he was in high school.  But at other times he felt older, like time was slipping by him too quickly. At least he felt that way until he found Ben.

“Yeah, but fears are fears,” Ben countered. “You can’t always make them go away by wishing. “ He returned Ryan’s kiss with one of his own. “I’ll always be there for you, just remember that.”

“I will,” Ryan promised. “Same goes for you. There’s nothing you can’t tell me, nothing I wouldn’t do for you.” As he squeezed Ben’s hand, he thought he saw a shadow cross Ben’s face. Ben mumbled something he couldn’t quite make out, but Ryan thought he heard him say it wasn’t as easy as that.

“What did you say, Ben?” Ryan asked.

“I just said I love you very much,” Ben replied. “I hope you don’t get tired of hearing that. If you do, just let me know.” His last words were spoken in a light-hearted tone, but Ryan sensed something darker beneath. They’d reached the one-time storage building now. Ryan could hear voices from inside. He started to ask Ben to wait a minute so he could frame his next question, but Ben reached for the door handle before he could get it out.

“Once more into the fray,” Ben said. “Shall we?” Not waiting for an answer, he pushed open the door and they entered the dimly lit interior. The moment had passed. Ryan was pretty sure Ben wasn’t being entirely honest, but he didn’t feel the need to argue the point. He wasn’t big on confrontation. Why spoil a good thing? If that made him a coward, then so be it. He was probably making a mountain out of a molehill anyway.

The practice went well, including the changes in the light show that Keanu proudly showed off and which met with everyone’s satisfaction. Several hours later they headed out to Houma. The Dive was situated in an industrial-looking area which seemed rather desolate, surrounded as it was by boarded-up buildings whose walls were drenched in colorful graffiti—from stylized art to pornographic ditties—as well as small houses  crammed together  in an uncomfortable intimacy that had obviously seen better days.

“There’s better parts of town,” Ben said. “Beautiful mansions, the whole nine yards. But this works for them, I guess. Road less traveled means the people who do show up are supposed to be here. Hopefully to see us.”

That made sense if your intention was to keep out the more mainstream people. Some of them could be somewhat judgmental when it came to people and things they didn’t understand. The idea of church metal itself was innovative and different, so Ryan realized it was open to be misunderstood. Salvation would probably be considered by some to be a fringe music group, while other people might downright hate them for what they thought the band represented. Didn’t mean Salvation couldn’t catch fire and make it big. Ryan believed in them. He knew they’d succeed. How could they not, with Ben to lead them?

Deacon and Keanu arrived at the same time as they did and backed the van up as close to the building as they could get. Ryan was prepared to help them schlep the equipment in, but Ben caught his arm before he could grab anything. Apparently he had something else in mind.

“I was just thinking,” he said. “There’s a Cajun restaurant not too far from here. I read about it on the Internet.  Menu looks great, and the reviews are pretty stellar. Since we didn’t yet, I thought we should something a little better than bar food before we go on. Would you mind going there and picking up some dinner? Take Abby with you, why don’t you? We have plenty of time before the show. I’d say let’s go and eat there rather than do the carry-out thing, but I’m afraid I’d be tempted to stay too long, sampling the menu and the drinks.” Ben laughed.

“That’s a great idea.” Ryan liked Abby. He didn’t mind the idea of spending time with her. This could be his chance to get something from her for the book.  And nothing about the taboo topics Aiden had warned him about—California, becoming transgender… or family. Didn’t mean she couldn’t bring it up herself, though, did it? Maybe she’d be more open than her twin gave her credit for. That would be up to her, naturally.

He turned toward Abby, who stood beside her brother. She made a very beautiful nun, he thought. If he were into women, he could see himself being attracted to her. Maybe that was messed up, though. Nuns weren’t supposed to be looked on a sexual beings, were they? Didn’t matter. He wasn’t drawn to women, and that was that. In fact, there was only one person who held any allure for him, and that was Ben. End of story.

“Do you mind coming with me, Abby?” he asked, not wanting to assume.

“Not at all. Let’s pull up the menu and see what everyone wants.”

“Thanks, baby.”When Ben kissed Ryan’s cheek, he couldn’t help but smile.
