Guest Blogger Sara York

Today please welcome my friend, fellow author, and fellow Wednesday Briefer Sara York, who's going to tell you a little bit about the latest Bigger Briefs anthology. Have a seat, Sara, I'll make something to drink, and you can go ahead and start.

I love writing short stories. Recently the Wednesday Brief’s crew has taken to writing shorts. My first short experience with the Wednesday group was a twisted tale of another time when passions and emotions were suppressed by the government for hundreds of years before the government changed its mind and allowed the people to stop taking the drugs. The Passion Bringers were created to help people learn to feel. You can find Passion Bringers in Wicked Watchers: Looking at the Lads.

In Reluctant Romance: Guys and Guys my tale is a gut wrenching story of Brad and Rick who keep Missing Love. Of course the pain and agony of losing the one man Brad thought would bring him happiness is only soothed when Rick takes over.

The attraction and love in short stories may come about quickly, but there is no less emotion at play. Working in the emotions with small clues is paramount. I love getting my characters to that place, where they can’t help but tumble into a relationship. Where there is something so desperate, so amazing, or so devastating that they turn to another, maybe they see something different and bam, they are in love.

Love is one of those qualities the is so hard to know why it happens. Attraction happens. People try to pinpoint why two people are attracted to each other but it’s almost an incomprehensible quality that is hard to comprehend. The color of a person’s eyes, their hair color, the way they walk, all of it plays into attraction and falling in love.

Here’s a short excerpt of Missing Love

Missing Love

By Sara York

“Please, I’m begging you, don’t go.” Brad stumbled forward; his eyes stung from the tears he’d cried, his nose ran, and his head throbbed. Getting Rick back was the most important thing he’d ever do. Life would end without Rick. The guy was his all in all, his rock, his true love, and his world. They’d spent years together, had too many firsts together to even count. And yet Rick was walking away, ready to end their relationship, all because of a fight. Fuck, they’d fought like dogs for years, but they still loved each other.
“Brad, give it up. I’m done.” Rick stood across the room, ramrod straight, his mouth tilted down in a scowl. “You aren’t what I want anymore. I have other needs and you don’t fill the bill.”
“I don’t understand. Tell me what I did wrong.” Brad stumbled on his way to reach Rick; falling to his knees, he grasped onto Rick’s pants front. “Please.”
Rick brushed off Brad’s hold, his face flush, his eyes flashing with contempt. “You aren’t enough.”
“But what about our history together? We’ve been together for years. Doesn’t that mean anything?”
“Fuck Brad, I didn’t want to have to say it, but you’re giving me no choice. I’m seeing someone else. I’ve been fucking this guy for the last six months and quite frankly, he is so much better than you.”
Brad’s heart stopped and his vision dimmed. He tried to stand, but fell back onto the floor. He felt like he’d been hit by a truck, or a wrecking ball, and tossed on his ass then run over, again and again. Rick’s words tromped through his mind, destroying him, but he couldn’t make sense of them. “You what?”
“You heard me. I’m done with you. I’m fucking another guy. Okay. I’m moving in with him, it’s more than just fucking. I’m in love with him.”
Brad’s brain stalled and he sunk to the floor, unable to move. Unable to think, he sat like a lump and watched the only person he’d ever loved walk out of his life. The sun dipped below the horizon and Brad didn’t move. Darkness overtook the room, mirroring his heart. Dashed on the rocks and slammed by waves of pain he didn’t move, didn’t think; he just sat.
The doorbell rang, yet Brad ignored it. Pounding, more of the doorbell, and finally his phone, but Brad couldn’t respond. His whole world had shattered and if he moved he might fall apart, breaking into a million pieces, allowing the wind to carry him away like sand brushed into nothingness.
Night turned to day and his body rebelled against him. He ran in search of the bathroom. Lying next to the toilet after expelling every ounce left in his stomach from last evening, which wasn’t much, the emptiness threatened to overtake him. He struggled to the cabinet and pulled out the Swiss Army knife he’d had since he and Rick took their first camping trip together at the young age of eight. They’d been friends for so long, finally becoming lovers in their teens. The years flashed through Brad’s mind and he remembered each significant event. He cradled the knife in his hands, wondering where he’d gone wrong.
The doorbell started up again, then the phone. Someone yelled from his front porch and for a moment he thought of opening the knife, ending it all, but he couldn’t, not without trying to get Rick back.
Brad crawled to the entryway, grasped the handle and pulled the door open, half expecting to find Rick—knowing he wouldn’t be there, but wishing like hell his lover had come back to claim him. Of course that made no sense since Rick had a key. But the person at the door wasn’t Rick. Instead Thomas stood on the porch, his face red and his eyes narrowed. Brad sank to the floor, his back against the wall.
“Why didn’t you answer?” Thomas barged in, slamming the door behind him. He pulled Brad up off the floor. “For fuck’s sake, you stink like shit.”
Brad said nothing. He allowed Thomas to strip him down, soap him up in the shower, then dress him in sweats and a T-shirt. Brad didn’t resist, didn’t say anything, just did what Thomas asked and found himself in bed. The days blended together, Thomas always there, helping him get through the day, forcing him to go into work, forcing him to eat. Brad dropped twenty pounds and he looked like shit. He moved through life without living.
Six months after the breakup, when the fog finally lifted, he looked at himself in the mirror, wondering who stared back. He showered, dressed, and even shaved without Thomas telling him to. On his way into the kitchen, he ran into a bleary eyed Thomas leaving the guest room.

Wednesday Briefs: Trapped in Time #3

Welcome to another week of flash fiction, brought to you courtesy of the Wednesday Briefers! This week, the prompt was "Love means never having to...", and the alternate prompts were: use peanuts, consideration and candelabra or "I would have to to... except that I..." or "Penny for your thoughts" or "Frankly, my dear, I don't..."

This week, Trapped in Time continues after Myron Cornwinkle falls flat on his face, and then proceeds to make an ass of himself. Don't forget to visit all the other Wednesday Briefers, whose links follow my story.

Trapped in Time #3

Not that I was expecting gratitude of any sort, as we’ve done nothing to merit it, including not allowing ourselves to be used as a buffer between Myron and the hard ground. Frankly, my dear, I don’t care if he breaks every bone in his miserable body—he deserves it. But I was certainly not expecting to be excoriated in language that would not have been out of place issuing from the lips of a group of drunken seamen in the midst of a Bacchanalian orgy.

I especially did not expect it in the middle of a strange jungle populated by at least one tyrannosaurus rex.

“Verdammte Schweinehund,” I mutter beneath my breath as I reach for Vittorio’s hand. His eyes meet mine, and it’s as though an invisible thread runs between his mind and mine, and I know just what he’s thinking.  Let Myron stew in his own juices.

I bow from the waist, before offering my lover my arm. He accepts it, and we turn away from the fuming pile of pestilence known as Myron Cornwinkle. I cannot help but smirk, because I have every confidence that we’ve not only not overplayed our hand, but that we have, in fact, just gained the upper hand.

We start to slog our way through the dense undergrowth. Large verdant fronds bestrew our path, and gnarly vines grab at our ankles, attempting to cling, but with our arms entwined as closely as our hearts, we manage not to fall. At the last moment, we veer away from a particularly damp and earthy looking patch of ground that may or may not be quicksand—it’s best not to take any chances.

We’ve barely skirted the potential trap when we hear a noise behind us. We collectively turn our heads to behold Myron scrambling after us. By dint of sheer luck, he avoids stepping in the swampy morass, but trips over a thick vine, and tumbles at our feet. I suppress a snicker.

Myron begins to swear again, but all I can make out is “nibcocked.” Before I can protest his language—more particularly the inference implied in that insult, which I’m positive is directed at me—Vittorio reaches down, grabs Myron by the shirt, twisting it about his fist as he lifts him bodily from the ground to dangle helplessly in the air once again.

“Myron, we do not appreciate that sort of language.” He brings the trembling man’s face close to his, staring into his pale eyes. I can hear Vittorio’s upset in the cadence of his words; when he gets emotional, his speech becomes more and more Italian, more passionate.  Especially when we are making love together.  Ach mein Gott!

Myron is flailing his arms, but it’s useless—about as useless as the tiny arms of the dinosaur we just saw. Myron’s no match against Vittorio’s strength, not when he’s been angered. More fool Myron for getting on Vittorio’s bad side—my lover is all that stands between him and my own ire.

“Also, you do not have knowledge of Doll’s physical attributes that you shall make such a statement. And if I ever learn that you have such knowledge, I will not be responsible for what I do to you!”

Myron’s squeaking now, and I fear he is in imminent danger of losing bladder control which, while humorous, is not something that I wish to witness. Or smell.

“Don’t worry, I don’t want to see his dong, I swear it!” Vittorio releases his hold on Myron and he crashes to the ground. But not before I hear the rest of his statement—“Only yours.”

That does it! I’ve had enough of this addlepated Arschloch! Uttering a tremendous roar, my limbs stiffen as I prepare to pounce on Myron and trounce him to within an inch of his worthless life. I coil like a deadly spring, and then I release myself at him, prepared to inflict serious damage, only to find my flight arrested by Vittorio, who has handily caught me up in his loving arms.

“No, no, Doll, no, no,” he chides me gently, covering my face with tender kisses in order to distract me from my direst of intentions. It succeeds as I succumb to his charms—as usual.

He continued to soothe me until I cease to tremble—from anger, anyway—and he sets me on my feet once more, keeping a protective arm about me.

Myron has backed himself against a tree; he stares at me with a most sullen expression.

I look lovingly up at my tall beauty. “I shall apologize,” I murmur, for I know he wishes no enmity between us, and I have no wish to upset him. He nods his affirmation, and leans down to offer me his sweet lips. I kiss him and pat his soft cheek; his eyes glow and I know he is pleased. Then I take a step toward Myron, followed by another one. I put out my hand tentatively, in the way that one first approaches a wild animal one is unsure of, in order to engender its trust. His eyes are filled with nothing but suspicion.

“Bitte entschuldigen Sie,” I say clearly, loud enough for Vittorio to hear. Please accept my apologies. And then I lower my voice to a level that only Myron can hear. “If you ever dare to look at Vittorio in that way, or any part of him, I shall slice yours off and use it for knackwurst. Verstehen Sie das?” He nods his frightened understanding. I smile and return to my love.

“Thank you, Doll,” he whispers and rewards me with a kiss.

I feel better now, having gotten that unpleasantness over with. Myron is muttering to himself, but we ignore him, wrapped up in one another, ‘til suddenly we hear him exclaim, “Great googly moogly! My wand!”

He snaps his suspenders loudly; several birds are flushed from a nearby bush as he begins to run—right into the quicksand!

Wednesday Briefs: Dallas in Wonderland #17

Happy Wednesday! Hope everyone is doing well. Are you ready for another day of Wednesday Briefs? This week's prompt was "The wind was so cold, that I (he/she) damn near...." The alternative prompts were: cupcakes, turpentine, old map or use a tornado in your story or "Whoever said that love was easy?" Next week, we'll have a Guest Prompt Diva - Nephylim!

Dallas in Wonderland continues, as the diminutive Dallas has been washed ashore on a strange beach, and finds himself among some strange men. Enjoy!

Dallas in Wonderland #17

“I’ll do it,” another voice piped up. Dallas heard a crackle and a hiss. A sixth man,  wearing a military uniform, quick marched to an open fire, topped with a metal grate, upon which a number of shrimp were cooking. “I think the first batch is ready to go,” the soldier announced.  Some of the shrimp had turned a bright orange. To Dallas’ amazement, these hopped sprightly off the grill and onto a large plate that had been set upon some nearby rocks. A large placard read “Eat me”.

“Good job, soldier,” Leatherman said, rising from the sand, brushing off his ass cheeks. “I like a man that can follow orders.”

“You like any man that’ll suck your dick,” the cop interjected.

Instantly the other man got up into the policeman’s face, jabbing his chest with one finger. “Do you always have to be such a bitch? I know all about the games that you play. Pulling motorists over, telling them they’ve violated some non-existent law, then offering to help them take care of their problem— off the books! “

“You’re both cupcakes and you should both shut up.” The construction worker picked one of the shrimp from the plate and tossed it down.

Leatherman backed away, and Dallas heard him mutter, "Whoever said that love was easy?"

“Come and get warm.” The Indian chief took Dallas’ arm and walked him closer to the fire. “We’re all in the same boat here, no need to snipe.”

“If we had a boat, we wouldn’t be in this predicament,” the policeman snitted, “but someone doesn’t know his port from his starboard—“

“Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuse the fuck out of me, Sergeant Pepper! I never claimed to be Popeye, now did I? Maybe if you didn’t have your head up your ass, planning your next fuck—“

A shot rang out. All eyes, including Dallas’, turned toward the cowboy. Calmly, he held his pistol up, blew smoke away from the barrel, and holstered it.  “Why don’t we all just calm down and dry off?” he suggested. “No sense in getting into name calling, is there? Or playing the blame game?”

The others mumbled various replies, but no one disputed his words.  Dallas noticed that all the shrimp had now jumped onto the plate, and the grill was empty. Suddenly the plate leapt off the rocks and began to move toward them, carried along with the aid of several tiny feet sprouting from the underside.

“Why don’t we sit here and eat?” the cowboy said, and they all plopped upon the sand. Dallas glanced around him, saw no reason not to, and followed suit, which wasn’t hard to do, you see, as he was much closer to the ground than they were, being a bit smaller than a blade of grass.

The mushroom! Suddenly he remembered what he carried in his pocket. Dallas thrust in his hand, praying that the errant river had not washed it away. No, still there. No longer sure which side was which, he picked a side and began to nibble. Either he’d grow bigger, in which case all would be right with the world, or he’d get too small to matter anymore. Either way there’d be an end to it.

He thought that this bit tasted sweeter, but that might just be wishful thinking on his part, hoping that he’d chosen the right side this time. He put his hand atop his head and waited… and nibbled… and waited… Suddenly he realized the flaw in his theory.  If he were to grow or shrink, his hand would stay proportionate and nothing would feel differently… It was only when he realized that he was on a more even playing field with the other men did he know that he’d managed to get it right, and he hastily stopped eating and shoved the remains back into his pocket.

Nobody even blinked at Dallas’ amazing growth spurt. He supposed in the scheme of things in this place, it wasn’t the most remarkable sight they’d ever seen. Made him wonder what else lay in store. The plate of shrimp stopped in front of him, waiting politely for him to take what he wanted. “No thank you,” he told it, mindful of his manners, unwilling to take a taste.

For a few minutes no one spoke, intend on the succulent feast. When all had eaten their fill, they sat back with satisfied grunts. Leatherman and the cop had made up, and the former now lay with his head in the latter’s lap. The cowboy and the Indian had paired off, as had the construction worker and the soldier. Dallas felt distinctively like the odd man out.

“How did you get the shrimp to do that?” he asked. “I’ve never seen shrimp quite like that before.”

“They’re one of a kind,” the soldier said proudly. “You can’t find sarabande shrimp anywhere but here.”

“Why do they call them sarabande?” Dallas was curious.

“Let me show you.” The soldier began to softly whistle. Instantly, the others jumped to their feet. Forming a line behind him, they began to march along the sand, back and forth. The tune was hauntingly familiar. Dallas thought he’d heard it in an Alec Guinness film.

And then they came. Dallas heard the tramp of their little feet, vibrating through the sand, before he saw them. In rows of two they came, their movements seemingly choreographed into…

“A sarabande!” Dallas exclaimed. Ah, now it made sense. As much as anything did in this place.

The line seemed to stretch for miles and miles—endless shrimp, dancing and snapping their fingers and pirouetting prettily to the beat of the music.

Dallas squinted into the distance. A much taller figure seemed to be bringing up the rear. A delicate figure clad in plaid. A kilt, even. As it drew nearer, Dallas was able to make out the familiar lovely features of Dr. Levi.

“I brought wine,” he said as he drew abreast Dallas.
