Saturday is Horror Day #120 - Predestination

 Predestination

The Barkeep (Ethan Hawke) isn't the bartender he seems to be. He is actually a temporal agent, who plans to retire...but first he has to catch the one criminal who has managed to elude him for years. And he has to do it before he kills more people than ever before. Known as the Fizzle bomber, he has chased him through time. Of course, the Barkeep has the advantage of knowing when in time to find him. But so far, all his efforts have been for naught.

As a bartender, it's his job to meet many people, and it's not surprising that he strikes up conversations with many of his customers. While speaking to one person, he learns that he writes under the title of The Unmarried Mother (Sarah Snook). But The UM says he has a even more surprising story to tell. The Barkeep is skeptical, so they place a wager, and the tale begins. The Barkeep is shocked at the first words, as the UM says "When I was a little girl..."

Predestination is a story about time travel. I won't go into any more detail, because I don't want to give

spoilers. This film should be appreciated without any forehand knowledge. I will say this about that - Predestination blew my mind...multiple times. I didn't see the twists coming, and I've never seen anything like this before.

This movie is well-written and directed, but I have to give the greatest kudos to Sarah Snook for her performance.

I honestly went into this with few expectations, didn't really know what it was about other than time travel, not a particular fan of Ethan Hawke, but I came away a believer. This film definitely warrants a second look at least, and I'll be glad to do that. See for yourself and let me know if you agree. I give this film 4.5 Stars.

To Weave a Highland Tapestry
by Mary Morgan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Time Travel/Scottish Historical/Paranormal
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Patrick MacFhearguis, hardened by battles won and lost, desires what he can never have—peace within his heart and soul.  Yet, the ever-meddling Fae weave a new journey for him to conquer—a task this highlander is determined to resist.

When skilled weaver, Gwen Hywel, is commissioned to create a tapestry for the MacFhearguis clan, she embraces the assignment. While seeking out ideas, she finds herself clutching the one thread that can alter the tapestry of her life and heart.

A man conflicted by past deeds. A woman with no family of her own. Is it possible for love to unravel an ancient past, in order to claim two badly scarred hearts? Or will the light of hope be doused forever?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Straightening, Patrick started forward. “I can help ye pick more mushrooms. Are they for the Midwinter feast?”
“Yes. Apparently, they’re for an onion and cabbage dish. Sounds delicious. I’m amazed at how all the women have managed here in this time-period.”
“I had heard it was a struggle in the beginning for them.” He glimpsed sideways at her. “How do ye find being here? I cannot fathom what ye must miss.”
She shrugged. “There’s simplicity here. I’d almost call it serenity. I’ve learned a lot this past month. Whereas, in my town you can go crazy trying to keep up with everything.” Gwen waved a hand outward. “And don’t get me started on city life. Traffic congestion, speedy drivers, people always on their cell—” She giggled. “Sorry. Too confusing for you.”
Patrick smiled, trying to perceive everything the lass was saying. Each time she spoke, her face would light up. There was a musical lilt to her voice that soothed him. He found her enchanting, regardless of the words spewing forth from her.
Noting a group of mushrooms, he moved away from Gwen.
“Since you have lost, what about my end of the bargain? I believe I can claim something of value.”
Patrick froze in his steps. Glancing over his shoulder, he stared at her in disbelief. “Ye wish to claim a reward?” Hope soared within his heart as if the sun’s rays stoked the emotion.
Her tongue darted along her lower lip. “Absolutely.”
He turned slowly around. “Name your reward.” Tension coiled within his muscles.
She approached him in an unhurried fashion. “You might have requested one kiss as your reward, but I’ll take four—the same number of times you skipped the stone over the water.”
His heart hammered against his chest. His mind refused to understand the magnitude of her words. “Four?” he uttered in a hoarse voice.
“Four,” she affirmed, stepping closer. “Do not keep me waiting.”
In one swift move, Patrick crushed her to his chest. Her soft curves were warm against his body. “Start counting, leannĂ¡n.”
The Questions –
Mary Morgan
1) You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have? A Fenian Fae Warrior and a magical crystal. He’d be able to transport us anywhere. Enough said.
2) Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you? The Sound of Music and I’d be Maria. I’m spiritual and had to overcome a few obstacles in my life. I’m not a singer, but I can play the piano and flute.
3) Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scene using them: hammer, saucer, traffic lights
In a mystical world ruled by the ancients, a rogue warrior was determined to flee from the tyranny of his king. In a moment of clarity, he smashed through the gates of the outer realms with his mighty hammer. The destruction was severe. When the dust and debris had cleared, the skies opened to reveal glittering traffic lights directing the survivors to a safe haven. Once there, each was given a golden saucer where they consumed fresh water flowing from a waterfall.
And so begins the saga of the rogue warrior who became the new king.
4) What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other? A quiet picnic and a good bottle of cabernet at the ocean, or in front of a fireplace, or out in our garden under the stars. And yes, we’ve done all three.
5) When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot? It always begins with a character. They step into my mind waiting for me to acknowledge them. First I choose a name. It has to feel right for them. From there, I’m fleshing out their characteristics and begin to plot out the story. Often times, I’m 60% plotter and 40% pantser. Yet there are times when the reverse happens.
Time Travel
by Roxanne San Jose
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Science Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Angelie Thompson invented a time machine in 2015 and her boyfriend, John Salvador, was accidentally transported back to 1970. Left with no other option, Angelie journeys through time, searching for John. Along the way, she encounters several adventures, meeting new people on her desperate search for her lover.
Meanwhile, stranded in 1970 and with no hope of ever returning back to his own time, John begins a new life, working as a receptionist in Lesti Hotel where he finds a new love, Elisha.
Conflict arises among the characters due to their complicated relationships and when disaster strikes, it's up to Angelie to save the world with her time machine invention.
The tale of ‘Time Travel’ highlights love, determination and friendship.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

The sound of metal in the time machine groaned as Angelie Thompson turned it to the left with her ratchet.

“All done,” she murmured to herself.

Standing up, she typed in the places and years in the time machine remote control to test it. The six foot black octagon shaped time machine lit up and opened its doors. Angelie smiled and said to herself, “Someday, I’ll use it again.”

Then she headed to the table where her “Best in Science” award and her twelfth-grade last-semester report card was to study her notes.

Time Machine Notes:

1. Make sure the red wires are connected to the blue wires.
2. Buttons for the dates and places in the time machine remote control must be connected to the time machine so it can transport in the correct time.
3. Time machine remote control must have batteries.
4. No injury

Angelie reviewed the notes and stretched her arm to ease the muscle cramps there. “Well, everything seems fine.”

As she looked back at the time machine, she heard a knock and turned to the door.

John Salvador, her boyfriend, stood before her and he held up a steaming cup towards her. “Honey, here’s your cappuccino to keep you functional.” He kissed her on the lips.

She replied, “Thanks, honey,” as she took the drink and sat.

He grabbed a chair and sat next to her then glanced at her time machine notes. “Did you finally finish your work?”

Angelie gulped, and then replied, “I think so. All the wires seem to be in place and transportation to the dates and places are working properly.”

He looked at the notes then stood up, walking toward the time machine. With a look of seriousness, he said, “I guess you’re ready.” He glanced over his shoulder to smile back at her. “Do you want to catch a movie to relax for a while? Buzz is the 2015 movie of the year.”

Angelie shook her head in response. “I don’t think so. Do you want to try it now?” With a pause, she added, “Do you think it’ll work?”

He walked over to the time machine and stood beside her.

She asked, “So, do you want to go to the year 3050 to see what the future looks like?”

He grinned. “Definitely.”

Angelie typed “3050” under the “year” in the time machine remote control and the door opened.

John’s eyes widened. “Wow.”

They entered the time machine nervously, stood still and held the handle on the side. The machine cast a white smoke inside, blinding them temporarily, a signal that it had transported them to the year 3050.

Inside, the time machine, they remained nervous as they did not know what lay ahead of them. After ten minutes, the time machine’s automatic slide door opened behind a tree, allowing them to see cars that could fly. The people were dressed in odd suits, there were also robots, robotic animals talking to each other and no pollution in the air. The water was crystal-clear, the roads made of metal, and buildings built with glass.

Wednesday Briefs: Trapped in Time #18

Hello and Happy Wednesday! Welcome to another edition of Wednesday Briefs, your weekly dose of flash fiction from the authors who love it so! This week the prompt was: "Pride goeth before a fall" and the alternate prompts are: use: window, hovercraft, eels or use : comfy chair or "Nobody expects..." or "That is a dead (fill in the blank)" or use: silly walks, balloon, a larch.

Last week in Trapped in Time we witnessed a battle between a TRex and a triceratops. What next? Stay and find out, then go see what the other Briefers are up to! Their links follow my tale!  Enjoy!

Trapped in Time #18

Morning comes again and my hand feels much better, thanks to the poultice that Charlie applied. Vittorio gathers fresh material for a new bandage and promises I shall only have to wear it for one more day. I can live with that.

Charlie peers into the canyon below us, although I am careful to keep as far as possible from the edge. The memory of crossing the flimsy bridge, and the fear of the huge battling dinosaurs on the other side, are still too fresh, and I have no desire to exacerbate my fear of heights.  Charlie whistles. “That is a very dead dinosaur,” he comments. Myron stands beside him, but I notice he doesn’t look down. From here, he seems a little green. But I have to admit, he is braver than I am, to stand so close to the precipice. “I don’t think he expected to end up down there.”

Myron shakes his head. “Nobody expects to die, do they?”

“Pride goeth before a fall,” Vittorio murmurs as they turn away from the edge.

If it weren’t for its location, so close to such a steep drop, I think I could get used to his cave. It’s more shelter than we’ve had since our arrival. But our destiny does not lie here.

Breakfast consists of more fruit, and some more insects, which I again decline, although Charlie persuades Myron to ingest some of them. I cannot stomach the thought.

The terrain on this side is rockier, and the trees are farther apart, so we spend more time beneath the blazing sun than I would care to spend. My fair skin is taking on a reddish hue that passes into a light brown. I can feel freckles popping out too, but there is nothing I can do about it.

 We have the penny farthing with us once more, although Vittorio walks it by his side, his other arm about me. I am trying to take notice of our surroundings, to keep a mental map in my head for future reference. If we are to live here—and that seems a very great likelihood—it would be good to choose the best location where we shall live.

Vittorio and I. Living together. The thought makes me smile.

“You think of something amusing?” Vittorio asks. His skin has taken on an even darker olive hue that is so very attractive.

“Nein, nein.” I shake my head. “I am just happy, that’s all. Thinking about us. Together.”

He leans close to me and I feel his lips brush over the top of my head. “That makes me very happy too, mi amore.”

Lunch is more fruit with some wild vegetables that we discover growing along the edges of a small field. Something that resembles potatoes, and wild scallions. What I could do had we some heat to work with! I moan about raw food and the lack of meat in our diet. What I would not give for some wurst! Or a thick veal chop. Somehow I do not think we shall be running across any calves any time soon.

Vittorio whispers in my ear, arching his eyebrows in a question. I am apprehensive, but nonetheless, I nod. He turns toward Myron and Charlie, who sit across from us, while Mary is swinging from the trees above our heads.

“Myron, perhaps you can use  your wand and make us some fire?”

“Fire?” he repeats uncertainly.

“Si, fire. Just a little one, so Doll can cook a little food, and then tonight, maybe for a little warmth.” He offers Myron a confident smile.

“I… I’m not sure.” Myron looks rather doubtful, in fact. He glances my way, and Vittorio squeezes my hand.

“You can do it,” I offer, trying to sound more sure than I am, but perhaps I should give him the benefit of the doubt.

“Come.” Vittorio rises and pulls me after him, and we gather some rocks together, so I shall have something on which to cook, crude and makeshift though it is. We also father some wood and some greenery to burn.

Charlie is stroking Myron’s cheek, looking into his eyes, lending his own moral support. Mary is nowhere to be seen.  “You can do it, Myron,” he says encouragingly. Finally Myron nods and grits his teeth.  He raises his wand, aims it at the pile we have assembled, and mutters something I cannot hear. We hold our collective breaths and wait.

Nothing happens.

Well, it could be worse, I think. He could have turned us into toads or something.

Myron looks frustrated. He takes a deep breath, one hand automatically going to his villainous moustaches, twirling it, the other holding the wand. Then he aims and mutters again.

At first I think nothing has occurred… again. But then Vittorio nudges me and points. Do I see a tiny bit of smoke? I peer more closely, as a small blue flame curls and consumes a large leaf, and spreads to the wood as it envelops it.  He’s done it! Myron did it! And without killing us in the process!

Cheering loudly, we circle Myron, clap our hands upon his back and congratulate him, all bad things forgotten in our excitement. Charlie grips one of the moustaches between two fingers. “Can we make this go away?” he asks hopefully.

Myron blushes, as he nods. “When I can find a razor,” he promises.

I hold my hand out to Myron. “You did a very good thing. Thank you very much.” He takes my hand and we look eye to eye with one another as we shake hands.

If I only had a knife, but I don’t, so I must make do with what I have. I take the potatoes and roast them in the embers, and then I season them with what I can find, add a bit of the vegetables that I have also roasted, and we make a very fine meal indeed. Maybe later, meat?

Wednesday Briefs: Trapped in Time #17

Good morning one and all and welcome to the Wednesday Briefs! Your source for fun flash fiction! This week's prompt was: "I thought I knew you, but..." and the alternate prompts were: Use: daft, punk, rooster, or "The first time we kissed..." or use: Danube, power, kiss, or "High as a kite, he..." or write a sex scene, but without removing any clothes!

As you may recall from the last episode of Trapped in Time, we left our heroes in a pretty pickle, what with Doll too frighened to cross the flimsy bridge, followed by the appearance of the t-rex. See what's happening there, then go visit the other Wednesday Briefers, whose links follow my story!  Enjoy!

Trapped in Time #17

I am seeing my life play out before my very eyes, but my time on this earth has been so short that it would  not even make a decent one reel film. I quickly cross myself and begin to pray. “Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy—”

The monster roads and I jump, my foot sliding too close to the edge. Luckily Vittorio has quick reflexes, and he keeps me from a horribly rapid descent into the water far below.

“Can he reach us, do you think?”

“I’m not sure, but I’d rather not find out. We’d be better off on the other side,” Vittorio replies, urging me toward the bridge. “Please, love, we need to move.” I do not resist quite so adamantly as I did before, although I am far from confident about what I am doing.

“Hurry!” Charlie yells across the bridge, echoed by Myron.

I try to bolster my failing courage by whistling. But my rendition of The Beautiful Blue Danube sounds more like something one might hear from a hurdy gurdy so I give up any pretense of bravery and take a step onto the fragile bridge, under my own power, at least while I may.

“You are doing good, Doll,” Vittorio praises me, leaning in for a quick kiss.

I can’t help but remember the first time we kissed. It was one of those moments, just like in the movies. Eyes meet, and you find yourself holding your breath because there is nowhere for it to go as  your heart has suddenly take all of the room in your chest. And your move toward each other without thinking about it, as your lips meet for the first time.

I knew then that I loved Vittorio, and always would.

As I’ve been reminiscing, apparently Vittorio has been inching me across the bridge. I sincerely pray the creature does not follow us. This flimsy structure will barely hold our weight, much less his. Daring a glance behind us, I see that the large dinosaur has halted at the edge of the cliff, bellowing at us, probably in anger at seeing his dinner escape his clutches.

“Don’t look back, look ahead, love,” Vittorio cautions me. I heed his words and slowly work my way across the bridge. He is right behind me, encouraging me, but the bridge, it is so fragile, and it shakes so much… I am convinced that it will collapse long before we reach the other side.

We’re half way across now, although it feels as though the bridge is sagging even more greatly than it was before, which is too much for my taste. Suddenly the cry of the great beast. From anger to a challenge.
Vittorio and I both turn our heads to see what is going on.

Another large animal has come upon the scene.  It is shorter, with a large bony ridge on its head, and three horns. And it is undoubtedly angry.

“Triceratops,” Vittorio says, awe in his voice. “Doll, this is amazing. No one has ever seen such a creature before. Not alive anyway. Just in fossil form.”

I’m not sure if I’m more honored or scared, but the triceratops has accomplished one thing. It’s diverted the attention of the tyrannosaurus from us.

“Keep moving, you’re doing fine,” Vittorio encourages me. I glance at my injured hand, which is red and swollen. I really do need to get to the other side, don’t I? I take a deep breath and plunge ahead, refusing to look down, or anywhere but the other side. Vittorio keeps one hand on me at all times, calming me, so that within a reasonable period of time we have reached the far side and I fall onto the blessed ground with relief.

Vittorio is right there, his arm about me, murmuring sweet words. He pulls me into his lap, and we turn our attention to what is happening with the two gargantuan creatures. The shorter dinosaur charges the larger, using his horns to tear chunks of flesh from the predator. The tyrannosaurus responds by snapping at whatever he can reach, ripping and rending the triceratop’s body. It’s a horrific sight, but we cannot seem to look away.

Charlie seems particularly upset, and Mary is agitated as well, jumping up and down and screeching. I’m not sure which animal she is rooting for, if either.

It seems that his unease is merited, for the two creatures, locked in mortal combat, pay no attention to their own personal safety and roll off the cliff, plunging into the water below, bouncing on the rock walls along the way.

It is not a pretty sight.

Charlie leads our somber little group to a nearby cave, and this is where we decide to spend the night. While Vittorio and I bring out food for the evening meal,  Charlie busies himself in looking for a particular plant, which he mixes with something else, and then applies to my hand, wrapping a leaf about it. At first it feels odd, and has a strange texture, but soon I find that the heat in my hand is lessening, and so is the pain. I lean against Vittorio, and Charlie sits beside Myron, with Mary  on Myron’s lap.

“Do you think we can have a fire?”I ask hopefully, but Vittorio shakes his head. “Not tonight,” he says. “Too dangerous. Besides, I’m not sure how we would light one.”

He has a point.

“Come, I shall keep you warm.” He wraps his arms around me, as we press together closely.  “You were very brave today,” he whispers into my ear, and I melt at his words and his touch. “Maybe tomorrow, we shall see what else Myron can do with that wand, si?”

I think for a moment, before I respond, “Si.”

I hope we won’t live to regret that idea.

Wednesday Briefs: Trapped in Time #16

Wednesday is upon us once more, therefore it's time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! Today's prompt is: "How could you think you're less than perfect to me?" The alternate prompts are: Use pasta in a creative way, or use: flowers, bridge, seesaw, or "please don't leave me..." or feature a fight in your story - verbal or physical or use: pink, condolences, believe. Last week, in Trapped in Time, something rather amazing happened, and Myron actually saved the day with his wand. Is that just a fluke? Or a sign of something more. Come see what's up with Vittorio and Doll and the gang! Don't forget to check out all the other Wednesday Briefers, whose links follow my story!

Trapped in Time #16

After we catch our collective breaths, and our heart rates all return to normal, we resume our journey once more, while we still have daylight with which to travel. Vittorio says we will not be safe out in the open, so we must seek some sort of shelter. Charlie says he knows of such a place, so we follow his lead. I cannot help but keep an ear out for the Mama dinosaur, fearful of her resumed wrath, but all seems to be well in that direction.

The land rolls gently before us in a gradually lesser slope, and as we top the rise of one last hill, we see spread out before us an amazing sight—a veritable carpet of flowers, as far as the eye can see, in the most amazing shades of red and purple and blue. I feel as though my heart will burst at the sight, it swells up so suddenly. I cannot speak for my emotion, gripping Vittorio’s hand tightly. He returns my squeeze and I can see that he is just as affected by the flora as I am.

These flowers are a sign to me that God is with us, that all is right in our world, and reaffirms what a beautiful world we live in, no matter what time we are in.

Unfortunately, I have forgotten the corollary that where there are flowers, there are bees, until I unthinkingly reach for one of the lovely blossoms, intending to adorn Vittorio’s hair with it, and a nasty looking thing flies out and stings me on the palm of my hand, before giving me a smug look and departing for presumably greener fields.

My hand is on fire, and I’m muttering every foul word I know; first in German, then in Italian, and finally in English. Where is a cube of ice when you need one? Not here, that is certain.

Vittorio is fretting over me, trying to calm me down, cooing and clucking, while Mary is jumping about excitedly. Somehow I think she has better sense than to try to pick a bee-laden blossom. Belatedly I remember the flower that I’ve given over to my uninjured hand to hold, and I proffer it to my lover, tears of pain welling in my eyes.

“For your hair,” I whisper. He leans toward me. I tuck it into place behind one perfect ear, and he kisses me.

“Come,” Charlie beckons to us, tugging at Vittorio’s arm. Myron hovers anxiously, attempting to be of use. I try not to snap at him, but it isn’t easy. Not that I think it is his fault, I am just in a great deal of pain.

“Myron, can you please bring the penny farthing?” Vittorio asks.

Color suffuses Myron’s face, but in a good way, I think. He quickly nods. “Of course. I’d be happy to.” He takes it very gingerly into his hands and walks it, just ahead of us, near to Charlie, so that I can see what he is doing at all times. I know that Vittorio knows what he is doing, and I focus on him instead.

Charlie halts first. He holds up his hand, and we all stop, wondering why. Edging forward to where Charlie stands, the answer becomes apparent. We now stand on the edge of a cliff. Sheer walls drop below us, down to a meandering stream. I follow it with my eyes as it disappears from view.

“What is that noise?” I ask Charlie. I hear a dull roar I cannot place, and I cannot tell if it’s a good or bad thing.

Charlie struggles for words, using his hands to illustrate something.

“Waterfall?” Vittorio asks, and Charlie gratefully nods.

So what now? And how do we get to the other side, assuming that is our goal? As if reading my mind, Charlie points to something I’d missed—what appears to be a narrow, rope bridge, swaying across the ravine, leading to the other side.

Wait, what did I just see? A bridge? Here? In this place? How?

“We are going to the other side,” Charlie informs us, and I have the worst possible feeling he means we’re crossing that rickety looking bridge, and I don’t like it. But my hand is hurting, and it’s hard to think clearly, so Vittorio makes the decision for us.

“Who built that?” my lover asks, as we cautiously approach the bridge.

“The Professor,” Charlie replies, as if surprised we need to ask. “Come. On the other side are plants that will feel good.”

Charlie goes first. He takes Myron’s hand. I see that Myron has the same reservations that I do, but Charlie doesn’t give him time to think about it. He leads him and the penny farthing onto the bridge, with Mary following them closely. As they seesaw carefully across it, I see how fragile it is; it sways with their weight. Myron yelps. I cannot blame him for being afraid. I am too.

Vittorio and I stand and wait for them to make their way across, slowly but surely, until they leap from the end onto the solid ground at the other side. Now it’s our turn.

My stomach is twisting and turning into complex knots and I suddenly dig my heels into the ground. “I can’t do it…” I mutter. “Vittorio, I can’t do it.” I turn helpless eyes on my lover.

“Yes you can, sweet love,” he replies, reaching for my good hand. “You must. We need to get to the other side for your hand.”

“I can’t,” I whimper, afraid that I’m going to cry any moment, from fear and from pain.

Looking down, I see the water rushing below, I hear the waterfall, and I begin to visualize what might be in the water, such as vicious and hungry crocodiles. What could be worse?

I wish I hadn’t asked, as a loud roar sounds behind us, and I turn to behold the Tyrannosaurus Rex again.
