That is, until a hot Mountie moves into town, a busload of strippers breaks down on Main Street and Mrs. Hurst goes and gets herself murdered with poisoned jam. Jam crafted by Charm’s family at the Tea & Tarot cafĂ©. Now it’s up to her to solve the murders—yes, plural, when another local business owner ends up dead.

Charm knows just what to do. What’s breaking a few laws if she can sleuth out the culprit? She knows the people of Snowy Lake better than any new lawman possibly could. So why can’t he just leave her be to get on with things?

And why does he have to be so darn hot?

EXCERPT:

There came a loud snapping of branches. Darn it, unwanted company. My fingers grasped at the aerosol spray bottle at my waist. I waited for another sound to alert me to the direction of the intruder. The sun in my eyes, I squinted to survey the landscape, swiveling my head back and forth.

There.

I caught the movement of a humongous upright creature headed straight for me, plowing through the thick undergrowth and overhead canopy as though he had just one intention—to do me harm. I didn’t care if it were a huge black bear or the legendary Bigfoot. Either way, I’d strike first, with the sharp knife hidden in my boot if it came to that. I sprayed the noxious substance from the hip, directing the wide stream from my belt holster.

A loud grunt of surprise sounded. “Aww, why did you do that?” More moans of human agony followed.

Oops.

Out of the bushes stumbled a very large man—not Bigfoot, but darn close. Dressed in a black windbreaker, black jeans and extra-large combat boots, he wore a very nice black Stetson, accompanied by a full-on grimace. And oh my, when he pinned me with a look from his haunting brown eyes under that spectacular bad-boy hat, my insides somersaulted. Wow.

“Oh, my goodness! I’m so sorry! Thought you were a black bear. If I’d known you were—well, you, I’d never have sprayed.”

The tall hunk of a man was too busy flushing his face with a water bottle to give me an answer. I waited, chewing on my lower lip and wishing I could just sink into the ground. But who rumbled through the bushes in such an obvious way? A bear, that was who. A land predator unafraid of humans and wanting to take a bite right out of me.

“Ma’am, I was coming to warn you. There’s been a bear sighted not far from here. I heard you caterwauling and thought you might be in trouble. Didn’t expect to be pepper sprayed for my trouble.”

I looked around warily. Maybe it was time to head back to town and bring a group of people to pick berries another day when I could assign someone to keep a lookout. I had filled four buckets. Not too shabby.

Wait.

What did he just say?

“I do not caterwaul. I was singing. And it sure beats crashing through the bush like Bigfoot.”

“If you say so, darlin’.” Was that a twinkle in his eyes? The rest of his handsome mug remained inscrutable, launching another fussy crop of butterflies into my body, looking to land. He came closer and the acrid stench of the protection spray on his clothes made my eyes water in sympathy. Oh, my.

He caught my grimace. “Not so pleasant an odor to be around, I agree. I’m Constable Ace Collins, by the way.”

“As in RCMP?” My voice came out in a high-pitched squeal. Darn it. Of all the people to mace, how did I manage a lawman?

MURDER BY MUNCHAUSEN TRILOGY
by   MT Bass

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Mystery/Sci-Fi/Police Procedural
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A police procedural sci fi thriller ripped from future headlines!

After Jake shoots and kills a murder suspect who turns out to be the son of a powerful city councilman, he finds himself demoted to the Artificial Crimes Unit, tracking down androids hacked and programmed to be hit men.

When his case of an “extra-judicial” divorce settlement takes a nasty turn with DNA from a hundred-year-old murder in Boston and a signature that harkens back to the very first serial killer ever in London, Jake finds himself tangled up in the brutal slayings of prostitutes being investigated by his former Robbery/Homicide partner, Maddie–who is now his lover.

But a madman, The Baron, is just getting started with his AI recreations of Jack the Ripper's brutal crimes.  And Maddie and Jake are teamed up again to stop the carnage as the Baron's army of human replicants imitate history's most notorious serial killers.

"It might not make sense, but the beloved Media tags it 'Murder by Munchausen.' For a price, there are hackers out there who will reprogram a synthoid to do your dirty work. The bad news: no fingerprints or DNA left at the crime scene. The good news—at least for us—is that they’re like missiles: once they hit their target, they’re usually as harmless as empty brass. The trick is to get them before they melt down their core OS data, so you can get the unit into forensics for analysis and, hopefully, an arrest." [excerpt from Murder by Munchausen]

Artificial Intelligence? Fuhgeddaboudit!

Artificial Evil has a name…Munchausen.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
From The Invisible Mind (#3)
It sat on a bench outside the dormitory of nursing students, waiting with its kind’s infinite patience. Originally acquired and programmed for landscaping at the Cleveland Clinic, the synthoid was one of a brigade of units which had been hacked and Munchausened, then returned to their menial daily services to mankind to await the Baron’s call.
There was no adrenalin surge behind the extremely life-like facade of humanity when that call came. Data packets, sent scatter-shot through the Atlas Grid, coalesced at the location outside the Cole Eye Institute, where it methodically trimmed and shaped the immaculate shrubbery around the building. To avoid Q’s metadata sniffing algorithms from detecting a download spike in the grid, the information came in digital sprinkles over the course of its human handler’s work shift, slowly building a malevolent intent to be executed that night. In the middle of the afternoon, it left the topiary unfinished to melt into the hospital shift change and disappeared.
Personality modules were a Gen-3 feature upgrade, which is why the earlier models were initially preferred. Swapping out a few IC chips and uploading hacked firmware was a relatively easy way to turn a quick buck with an automated contract killing.  But evil innovates, too, and the same features that made synthoids even more human-like in their behavior also helped create robotic assassins which could better camouflage their malicious intents and evade the reach of the Artificial Crimes Unit by melting into and moving undetected through the humanity that surrounded them. For the Baron, it allowed for a greater measure of artistic expression in programming the synthoid’s behavior to not only recreate infamous crimes of the past, but to mimic the behavior of their perpetrators, which intensified the thrill of watching the video feed through the eyes of Jack the Ripper, Ted Bundy or, this particular evening, Richard Speck. Jake wasn’t the only history buff and it amused Jamal that London police had photographed the eyes of Jack the Ripper’s victims, hoping to capture the last thing they ever saw: their killer’s face. If only Scotland Yard could have imagined the future.
The Gen-3 personality modules also supported the ANSI Adaptive Artificial Intelligence Protocol #9 to enhance the artificial human experience of real men and women who interacted with synthoids. The constant writing and rewriting of code in the personality/experience loop formed unique individual synthoid consciousnesses, which manufacturers uploaded to their servers for product improvement teams to study.  In Munchausened units, that feed was hijacked and routed to another portal in the Darknet to build a collective id of evil.
At eleven PM, it rose from the bench and entered the dormitory. The bodies of nine women would be found the next day, having been strangled and stabbed to death. Unlike 1966, no eyewitness was left alive, though the phrase "Born to Raise Hell" was written on the wall in blood.
Virtual Book Tour: Secret Sister
Please welcome author Emelle Gamble. She's going to talk to us about her new release, Secret Sister, and she's going to answer a few familiar questions.  Emelle will be awarding a $100 Amazon GC to a random commenter during the tour. The more you enter, the better your chances of winning. To find out where the other stops on her tour are, go here. And look for the rafflecopter at the end of this post.
The Questions
1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
My husband, affectionately known as ‘Phil the fist’. (He’s a Brooklyn boy).  My one item is a bowie knife. With it he’d feed us, whittle a raft and or a house,  protect us, and cut my bangs. He is that good.
2)      Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?  The
Wizard of Oz. I’m Dorothy, always trying to find my way home.
3)      Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scenario using them:  night, union,  minute.
First of all, let me say this was a difficult request for me.  It’s night, I’m tired and it took me a minute to actually understand what you were asking me for. Then I had to look up how scenario is defined (an outline or synopsis of a play; especially : a plot outline used by actors of the commedia dell'arte). And the word ‘union’ to me either means the AFL-CIO or something vaguely civil war related.
But here goes…The Union was crumbling, the night sky was darkening, time was ticking down to the last minute. Who you gonna call? Ryan Gosling.
This exercise proved something to me I’d forgotten. I have never, ever been able to write to someone else’s idea. I once had a three-book deal  offered to me if I could only write a big saga kind of story about a piece of Egyptian jewelry, horse racing, and 1890 London.  I couldn’t do it.
4)
You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to make love to anyone you want. Who do you Heathcliff. I’d change his mind about that dame, Cathy!
choose and why?
   5)    What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other? Quiet. Nothing hurried. Away from home. Three magic components which have always worked magically for me.
   6)    When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot? I begin with plot, specifically, the ending and the title. I then build the book  backwards to explain the ending. I am afraid to admit this in print as my family will read it and understand something is wrong with me. For real.
7)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you? Julia Roberts. I want her to
have that look on her face she has in Notting Hill, when the people who don’t realize she’s a famous actress asks her what she made last year. She tells them she made 6 million dollars and has a contract barring them from requiring her to show her naked ass. Of course, she looks nothing like me, and that scene has nothing to do with anything in my life, but she has the right spirit!
8)      Who’s your favorite horror villain and why? I do not like horror at all, and I have no favorites. I can’t read it or watch it. I still have nightmares about those old black and white movies about Giant radioactive ants and UFO’s that land and the Martians put things in your neck and control you. I couldn’t read the Hannibal Lecter books or The Shining or The Other or The Excorcist or anything Stephen King ever wrote, except for Dolores Claiborne, which I feel is a masterpiece.
9)
Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it? Recent history, Cary Grant. Enough said. Further back? I’d love to spend a week with Michaelangelo. I know, I know, he might have been gay. I don’t want to swoon over him, I’d just love to talk to him, watch him work, and be in the presence of genius.
   10)  Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it? Yes. And I’ve written it, so get ready world. HA! It’s set in 1950 Los Angeles and it’s about a gorgeous blonde, a WWII hero turned journalist, and a monster
EXCERPTS :
When I ‘woke up,’ strange words to use after being unconscious for what was surely days, not hours, I felt remarkably lucid. Which is to say, I opened my eyes and saw and understood that I was in a hospital bed, there were nurses working in the area outside my glassed-in room, and I was hooked to an I.V. and some other kind of machine.
I didn’t know the story of how I got here, but assumed it was bad. I remembered hearing, somewhere, that I had been in a terrible car accident, but I was blank to any other details.
For instance, I didn’t know my name.
I examined the contents of my brain and started a list of unknown things. Where was I? No clue. What day was it? I looked outside and saw blue sky. Zero. I was blank to the most basic of information.
My chest tightened and a roar began in my head. Don’t panic. I gulped air, blinked; fought to stay awake.
 “Roxanne. Roxanne Ruiz. Do you know where you are?”
I didn’t recognize that name. In my brain I saw a face. A kind face, smiling. A great looking guy with strong arms and blue eyes.
But I had no idea who he was either …
