The Exam (The Enforcer's Series #2) Review

The Exam (The Enforcer’s Series #2)

Author: Ravon Silvius
Publisher: eXtasy Books
American release date: May 1, 2013
Format/Genre/Length: E-book/M/M Steampunk Romance/121 pages
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★

Kenneth and Thorn have decided to become Enforcers. But it isn’t as simple as some might think. They must be tested and found worthy. Which is why they find themselves at the Victeni mansion.

Thorn finds the mansion rather overwhelming. He is also disconcerted to discover the servants are fellow talentless, although he should have expected as much. Thorn’s reception by Kenneth’s mother, Lady Victeni, is less than stellar. She’s having a problem with the idea that her son’s lifemate is a talentless. Thorn is hard put to remain civil to the woman.

Then comes the matter of sleeping arrangements. When Kenneth directs that Thorn’s bags should be taken to his room, his mother objects and refuses to accede to her son’s request. Thorn plays peacemaker, thinking that separate rooms will not keep them from making love when they choose to. The new servant, Lilliana, shows Thorn to his chamber, which seems nice enough to him, until she explains in what ways it’s an insult.

Dinner with the parents devolves into a challenge to Thorn to prove he’s Kenneth’s lifemate. Lord Victeni directs Thorn to get his best things from his room—if he fails the test, he will be sent packing immediately. Thorn senses something is wrong—what it is, he doesn’t know.

And then it begins...

The second book in the Enforcer’s series tests Kenneth’s and Thorn’s desire to be Enforcers, forcing them to question what they know and how they feel as they are forced to justify themselves over and over. It is not cut and dried, by any means. Neither side is wholly right or wholly wrong.

In the process of testing to become Enforcers, the two young men learn a lot about each other. This test can either strengthen their bond—or snap it. It’s up to them.

I love the second book as much as the first. More steamy sex, and a great deal of love and trust, as they learn what makes the other tick. Can’t wait to see what the next book holds!

Tease Me Thursday #14: Be My Human

Hello, hello, and welcome to Tease Me Thursday! It's almost Friday, time to get into the mood for the weekend and have a little fun too!

The work week is almost done, so why not have a little fun with Reed and Taz! You might remember them from Be My Alien, my first joint book with my friend MA Church. Now here' s a little bit of the second book, Be My Human, which comes out in the fall. Enjoy! And don't forget to visit the other hoppers, their links follow my tease!  In this scene... well, I think you'll figure it out :)

“Reed, when can we get the swing you told me about?” He ran his tongue up the inside of Reed’s thighs, over the lightly haired delicate skin.
Reed thought he might lose it then and there. The very thought of having Taz in a swing stirred his imagination and his libido. But that was in the future, certainly not now. “We can’t. Not yet,” he panted. “I don’t think this ceiling… will hold… oh shit…” Before he’d even finished speaking, Taz had pushed him down into one of the two chairs in the room.
“Want to ride you,” Taz moaned. He turned about and bent over, presenting Reed with his plugged ass. “Pull it out, please. It’s time for you to be inside me, not that…”
It was time, Reed agreed, as he carefully removed the toy. He couldn’t help but think of its expensive counterpart, the overindulgent model that had originally brought them together, and he had to smile. This particular version, while not nearly as costly or sparkly, was perfect for their purposes, and had done its job well, keeping Taz simmering all day long. Of course, to be honest, that wasn’t hard for Reed to do.
“Lube, babe,” he murmured. “We need the lube.” He couldn’t resist lightly slapping that magnificent backside, remembering just how wonderful his lover’s dark place tasted. “Hurry,” he added, not sure how long he could keep himself under control. Taz lunged across the bed, not bothering to walk around it. He yanked out the drawer to the side table, spilling the contents on the carpet. Not taking time to pick anything up, he grabbed the tube of lube, rolled over and returned to Reed’s side, holding it out for his use.
God, but Taz was gorgeous… that was the last coherent thought he had as he teased Taz with the plug, sliding it between his legs and rubbing against his balls, before tossing it aside on the table next to him. He spread the slick, cool lube on his dick, hoping the sudden cold would dampen his need to come, and grasped Taz’s hip with one hand. Oh, Taz would ride all right, but he’d do it this way—facing away from him. Reed wanted to see his dick sliding in and out of that quivering hole.

“Straddle me, Taz.” Reed held his dick as Taz scooted back, his legs on either side of Reed’s. “That’s it, babe. Slide down on that dick.”

An investigative journalist gets an unlikely tip from a mysterious informant. Dismissing it as impossible, she disregards the information and drops the story. Until the informant turns up dead, as predicted.

Plunged into the murky waters of a seedy underground prostitution ring, this psychological thriller provides twist upon dark twist in a story that would ultimately pin the church and several government officials in the largest murder cover-up the city has ever witnessed.

But is it true, or has the journalist merely been used as a pawn in a greater scheme? And how many people is she willing to sacrifice trying to figure it out?

Enjoy an excerpt:

When she arrived at the little facility her building provided, a quick look around confirmed she was the only one there. Just as she’d hoped, and exactly how she liked it to be. Smiling in satisfaction, she flipped on the television that was perched on the wall, and turned up the music on her iPod as loud as she could handle it. The multiple distractions would help her get through the extra mile she was planning to conquer. With chilled water bottle in place, she cranked up the treadmill to a nice brisk pace.

As her breathing picked up speed and her muscles began to warm, Ana’s eye caught a red flash along the bottom of the screen. Breaking News filled the bar, and the too-chipper-for-their-own-good reporters were suddenly getting serious. Since the volume was still muted, Ana couldn’t understand exactly what was going on, only that they were showing the wide stretch of river that ran along the outskirts of the city. She wiped the first beads of sweat from her brow, and used the remote to turn the volume of the television higher while simultaneously adjusting her music.

As the reporters spoke, home-video footage of something floating in the water rolled before her eyes. The camera zoomed in, the frame ever so shaky, and it became clearly apparent that the “something” was a person - face down with long brown hair spread out like a Catholic halo. It appeared another victim had been pulled out of the water; the count was quickly tallying up. A young woman this time, and possibly one who had gone missing the night before.

Ana’s pulse skipped a few beats as they replayed the video over and over. There was something familiar about the long, lean body. Slowing the treadmill to a stop, she ripped the ear buds from her head to give the segment her entire attention.

...it appears at first glance that the victim suffered from a deep cut to the throat, and received multiple stab wounds to the chest...

The beads of accumulated sweat turned cold on Ana’s brow. She immediately reached for her phone and dialed Kylie’s number.

“What the hell, Ana?” Came her friend’s groggy voice.

“Turn your TV on. Channel four. Hurry.” Ana said, eyes transfixed to the screen in front of her. “Recognize that face?”

...It’s thought the victim may be one of the young girls recently reported missing. The screen flashed candids of three possible women. All brunettes. All tall and thin. All roughly the same age. Among them was a photo of Mara, just as Ana had expected there would be.

But the body was too bloated and disfigured to be absolutely certain, and an autopsy would be needed.

... The body will be taken in for processing where officials hope to shed more light on the case in the near future. In the mean time, they’re cautioning residents to avoid....

“Did you see that?” Ana’s voice escaped in more of a demand than a question. “Please tell me I’m seeing things.”

“Oh my god...” Kylie whispered into the receiver, confirming the dread that was building in Ana’s stomach. “Do you really think it’s her?”

“I know for a fact it is.” Ana declared, the pull in her gut getting stronger by the minute. “The autopsy will confirm it.”

“So, what does this mean exactly now?”

“That maybe I should have been listening a little closer when I was talking to Mara.” She said with regret as she swiped her forehead with the back of her hand. “And maybe I should have asked more questions. There’s a story here, I’m sure of it now.”

“What are you going to do?” Kylie’s voice was decidedly more alert now.

Ana shook her head. “I have no idea.”

Though if she were to be truthful with herself in that moment, she’d already made up her mind. Ana flipped off the television, and left the little gym to get started.

Wednesday Briefs: Dallas in Wonderland II: Chapter Twenty-One

Happy Wednesday, one and all! Welcome to more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We've reached Hump Day, so it's time to celebrate with a little bit of reading fun! And today we have a flash virgin in the group!

Looks like this week marks the end of Dallas in Wonderland II. I will be starting something new next week so I can finish Dallas up and send it to my publisher. What my new story will be is a mystery to me lol But what of Dallas? Last seen, he had been discovered by his nephew Oz, and then there was another country heard from. Who could it be? Find out in this week's chapter. And don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them!

Dallas in Wonderland II: Chapter Twenty-One

Oh jeez, now what?

A startled Dallas turned to find himself looking up at a familiar dappled charger and its white armored rider. He breathed a sigh of relief as he recognized Sir Metaphor and Lady Simile. Thank goodness it was nothing worse. Rather, they were a sight for sore eyes.

“Good evening to you, sir!” The knight opened his visor and greeted him. He wrinkled his nose when he talked and his moustache fluttered. “And to you, young sir,” he added for Oz’s benefit.

“How do you do, sir,” Dallas’ polite nephew responded, adding, “My name’s Oz, you don’t have to call me sir.” He jumped to his feet with the vigor of youth. “May I touch your horse, please?”

“Why don’t we ask her?” The knight harrumphed deeply. “Milady, this young man would like to stroke you. Is that allowed?”

Lady Simile whinnied what Dallas took to be her consent. “She says you may,” Sir Metaphor gallantly interpreted. As Oz gently patted the horse’s long neck, the knight turned his attention back to Dallas.
“Have you found that for which you sought?”

“Yes... and no.” Dallas hesitated. That was a more difficult question than it first appeared to be.

“Ah.” He laid a long bony finger alongside his nose. “Sometimes what you want is not what you think it is.”
Isn’t that the truth?

But the question was, what did Dallas want? Or was that who?

He shook his head in an attempt to clear it.

“You’re out quite late.” He changed the subject with little finesse.

“Day or night. It matters not to the lady and myself. Although, come to think of it, one might ask the same of you?” White brows arched, as the knight gave Dallas a penetrating look. Dallas had no desire to explain having lost time, not to mention having lost his friend.

Time. Did time work the same way in Wonderland as it did in the other world? Dallas had no idea. Was it late back home, and if so... “Where is Paris?” he asked Oz. “And where does she think  you are?”

“She went out. She said she had a date. Some new guy” Oz shrugged. “She told me to go to bed when it’s time and she’d see me in the morning.”

Of all the irresponsible people... And they called him crazy? Dallas sighed.

“Do you want to come back to my house, Uncle Dallas? We can have dinner together or something.”
Leave Wonderland? Now? As tempting as the idea sounded, he couldn’t do that. Campbell was here, somewhere. And Dallas had to find him. Then he’d be glad to leave this place, and everyone in it, far behind.

The wind began to pick up. Leaves skittered across the ground like nervous spiders. From far off a mournful howl could be heard, an inconsolable wail that was joined by others, forming a chorus of sorrow, before dying away. Dallas inadvertently shivered.

He needed to do some serious thinking. More than that, he needed to actually stop living in the past, and start planning a future. For too long now, he’d just been existing. Living day to day, but not really living. A dead-end job. A fucked-up relationship, if you could even call it that, with his psychiatrist. A past that refused to stay in the past.

But even so, there were two bright spots in his life, and one of them was sitting right there. His nephew, Oz. He loved Oz as much as though he were his own child. Dallas couldn’t love him anymore. And he was furious to think went out and left him to his own devices. He might be mature beyond his years and all, but he was still a nine-year-old kid.

And the other bright spot... was Campbell.

Just thinking about Campbell both calmed him and excited him. Made his heart beat faster. He called Campbell’s handsome face to mind, thought about his beautiful smile, his gentle touch, and his generous soul.
Just when had he fallen in love with Campbell Cain?

Dallas didn’t know. He’d been poisoned by his obsession for Dr. Samuel Levi. An obsession that had to end. Now.

This was it. He was done. He was going to find Campbell, and he was going to hold on to Oz. He deserved a stable, loving environment, one his sister obviously wasn’t capable of giving him. Dallas wanted to give him that stable home, that love. They could do it, the three of him. He had no doubt Campbell would want to be a part of this new family he was going to form. He could feel it in his heart.

“Traveling by night, through Wonderland...” The knight spoke up, his eyes fixed on Dallas.

“But you do it?” Dallas was sure there was something the older man wasn’t saying.

“There is no one who wishes me harm.”

Too true. Too fucking true.

He could take a chance and trust his ability to navigate by the light of the moon. But that wouldn’t be the wise thing to do, and Dallas wanted to make nothing but right decisions from now on. So, much as it pained him to wait, he knew he would have a better chance if he waited until morning. Plus, Oz needed his sleep.

“Oz, how about you stay with me tonight?” he suggested. No need to go into details. There was time enough later, once he found and rescued Campbell. “How does that sound?”

Oz looked up from the horse, leaning his cheek lightly against her flank, a contented smile on his face. “I’d love that, Uncle Dallas. Are we going to camp out?”

Apparently so, even if they were rather unequipped. But help came from an unexpected source.

“I have just the thing!” The knight reached into one of his steed’s saddlebags and produced two blankets, which he handed to Dallas. Dallas gave him a grateful smile.

Sleep tonight, while he formulated a plan of action. Tomorrow—Campbell.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
Since I can only have one person, then I will bring a large, beautiful, muscular and
intelligent bear with me. He must be strong and be able to build a hut for me out of the sun (I love the sun, just not on me) and he will do this while naked for my entertainment. He must also be able to discuss plots and stories with me.

One item I’d take is anything that gives me the ability to write. I am guessing no power so, maybe a box of pens. I will have my intelligent bear make me some paper.

Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?
Ummm, musicals?  Aren’t those plays with music? Yeah, unless if comes from Disney and I was forced to sit through it with my kids, I can’t recall seeing any musicals in my life that equate to my life.

Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scene using them:  stomach, binge, toffee
Interesting choice of words, Jules!

After binging on coffee all morning, my stomach roiled, but I had to stop at the convenience store. The store where he worked. The man with the intense green eyes and deep red hair. The man whose stare reached inside of my chest and stole my air, whose smile grabbed my cock. Stepping up to the counter, my mouth dried and my heart pounded. Snatching a toffee bar I wouldn’t eat out of a box on the counter, I laid it down with a shaky hand.

“Will that be all?” he asked, voice husky and low.

Most complicated question ever.

You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why?

Damn, wow. So many characters with so little time. Definitely, Sam Kage from Matter
of Time by Mary Calmes. Yup, that big bear could push me up against the wall, hold me there and....phew, is the heat on?

What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?
Home, lounging on a nest of pillows and blankets, naked in front of the fire.

When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
Generally, I start with an idea, a kernel, a seed, and it grows from there. With Dare To Love Forever, the term Tabula Rosa (blank slate) sparked an idea about a vampire that couldn’t bite anyone because doing so he would wipe the person’s mind clean. With Curiosity Killed Shaney, the saying, “Your curiosity will get the better of you,” sparked that story.  With my free story, Waiting for Snow, an idea about someone finding love at a stoplight and the need for a Christmas story started that story. Anything, anywhere, and anytime.

If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?
Someone totally hot, of course. Hmmm, I will choose Ian Somerhalder. It’s like looking in a mirror, lol.

Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?
I love characters that are seemingly normal and nice but turn out to be purely evil. I
loved Michael Keaton as the renter in the movie Pacific Heights. (P.S. I’m a landlord myself and luckily have never had an evil tenant, LOL). Also, Rutger Hauer as the hitchhiker in the 1986 film The Hitcher. I never pick up hitchhikers after seeing that movie!

Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?
I don’t have a historical crush that I can think of. How boring! Not sure if it’s historical, but some of the Kennedy brothers were quite smoking in their young days.

Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?
I think the there is an audience, even if a tiny one, for every story. I know there are some stories I would like to write that people I know wouldn’t be ready to receive but that relate to me in a personal way. Maybe I am the one not ready for them. When I am, you all will get to read them.

Blurb:
Carson Locke is a Tabula Rosa vampire—a dangerous rarity in the world of vampires. With one bite, he can wipe clean a vampire’s mind, creating a mindless drone. Because of this, Carson has spent his entire twenty-three years sheltered at home. That changes when his entire family is murdered. Now on the run and near death, Carson meets Commander Lincoln Samuels, a beautiful vampire who tries to heal him. In doing so, Carson is bonded to the vampire and turned into something the vampire world has never seen. When Carson is poisoned, he believes that someone wants him dead as well, however there are greater plans for Carson put into motion hundreds of years before his birth.

Lincoln is a Sanatore vampire with the ability to heal other vampires. He heads a team in the New Vampire Justice police force in Utica, NY. Late one night, he is called to a local Vampire Blood Market where a starving Tabula Rosa vampire is about to be executed by one of his officers. Feeling a strong connection to Carson, Lincoln wants to heal the broken man despite knowing the risk in doing so. Healing Carson could destroy Lincoln and cost him the chance to love again. What Lincoln finds is that there is a greater evil threatening to take Carson from him.

Can two vampires who have loved and painfully lost in the past, learn to trust one another, defeat the evil rising against them, and dare to love forever?

Excerpt:

“Are you cold?” Lincoln placed a hand on Carson’s leg.
Carson shook his head, staring at the strong hand, the nails trimmed short, the black hairs on the base of the fingers. Without thinking, Carson reached out and laid his hand over Lincoln’s. Carson’s hands were small, the fingers long and thin. His skin was snow white against Lincoln’s darker skin. Carson would guess Lincoln had some Latino ancestors. He’d never met anyone of any origin other than his homogenous family.
The muscles in Lincoln’s hand twitched, but he didn’t move away. Carson continued to stare down, refusing to look into those blue eyes. His attraction to the man was growing, expanding under his skin, as he touched Lincoln. Carson had been kissed and groped and sucked by Justin, but he’d never been penetrated with more than his own finger, and he’d never fucked anyone else. Twenty-three and a virgin. If the incident with Justin hadn’t happened, Carson was sure they would have gone all the way. They’d been in love. Then Carson had destroyed everything.
Carson sucked in a deep breath and looked right into those pools of blue. Once he told Lincoln the horrible things he’d done, he’d never get to touch the man again. Lincoln would never look at him again with that rare softness and—was that need or desire—again.
Carson pulled himself up onto his knees, moving closer to Lincoln. The man squinted at him but said nothing. Carson’s breaths were shallow and his nervousness squeezed tight around his chest. He had to do this one last good thing, because after he spilled his secret, he was going to die one way or another.
Carson leaned closer to Lincoln. The man was still, his eyes searching Carson’s, questioning. Carson licked at his lips, drew in and released a deep breath. He hadn’t been this close to a man—ever. He’d been close to Justin, but they’d only been sixteen, just boys. The closeness was intoxicating, the smell of the man thrilling. Carson slowly lifted his hand to Lincoln’s chest, giving the man time to dodge his touch, but Lincoln remained still. Carson’s fingertips brushed the black T-shirt stretched tight over his chest. Gaining confidence, Carson rested his palm over Lincoln’s left pec. The muscle twitched. Carson held his breath as he ran his hand over the muscled chest, tingles filling his palm. He groin ached and his dick filled. The combination of the touch, the heat, the manly smell, pushed Carson forward.
He caught the hitch in Lincoln’s breathing, but Carson kept his eyes down. If he looked into that face, he’d lose his nerve. He would go as far as Lincoln would allow. Visions of making love to Lincoln bombarded Carson. Lincoln behind him, beneath him, over him… Carson’s breathing increased as he ran his hand over Lincoln’s hard stomach. The man must do hundreds of crunches a day to get that hard.
Speaking of hard—the sight of the bulge in Lincoln’s jeans thrilled Carson. Shit, Lincoln was turned on, hard from Carson’s touch. That reaction spurred Carson to move lower. A hand grabbed his wrist and he gulped, fearing he’d gone too far.
The grip on his wrist wasn’t tight but firm. Lincoln raised Carson’s hand and rested it against his cheek. His dark beard scratched at Carson’s palm. Carson raised his chin, met hooded, lust-filled eyes. Butterflies the size of crows beat against Carson’s stomach. Lincoln’s tongue came out and licked at his own lips. Carson’s eyes flicked down to watch the erotic motion. Gods, he wanted to taste those wine-colored lips.
Maybe Lincoln was reading Carson’s mind because Lincoln lifted his other hand and laid it on the back of Carson’s neck. The skin-to-skin contact raced a shiver through Carson’s body all the way to his toes. His cock was so hard and aching, and he wanted to touch it but he refrained, waiting…breathing…yearning, as Lincoln continued to stare right into him.
The hand on his neck tightened and pulled Carson closer, leading him to Lincoln’s lips. Time stopped as he traveled the short distance to those moist lips. Just before they touched, Carson closed his eyes. Lincoln’s hot breaths hit Carson’s face and then their lips came together tentatively, as if they were both waiting for the other to make the move. The electricity sparking from just that touch zipped straight to Carson’s groin and he surged forward, turning his head and opening his mouth while wrapping his arms around Lincoln’s neck. Lincoln’s hand tightened on Carson’s neck and the other wrapped around Carson’s waist and pulled him hard against Lincoln’s chest.
Oh gods, the taste of the man was heavenly, and Carson attacked his lips, teeth clacking, and a moan rising from one of them. Lincoln turned his body and pulled Carson onto his lap. Instantly, Carson humped against Lincoln’s stomach. A scorching heat rose from within and Carson’s control held by only a fragile thread. Lincoln grabbed one of Carson’s hands and placed the palm against his erection. Carson gasped, squeezing Lincoln’s hard shaft, eliciting a rumbling groan from deep within the man’s chest.
Lincoln pushed his groin against Carson’s hand and Carson wanted so much more, wanted to touch every part of Lincoln’s body, wanted Lincoln’s hands to touch him. Carson pulled away from the kiss and reached for the button of Lincoln’s jeans. Their frenzied pants filled the space between them. Lincoln reached under the hospital gown Carson wore, access easy given that Carson wasn’t wearing underwear. When the rough hand closed over Carson’s shaft, he cried out from the pleasure of a hand other than his own touching him. He was going to come too soon.
“S-stop, please…I’m gonna…” Carson couldn’t catch hold of a single racing thought, couldn’t concentrate with the gorgeous man’s hand stroking the head of his dick.
“Yeah, you are,” Lincoln growled and pushed Carson back onto the bed.

Noble Magic Review

 Noble Magic

Author: Ravon Silvius
Publisher: eXtasy Books
American release date: April 15, 2013
Format/Genre/Length: E-book/M/M Steampunk Romance/95 pages
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★

The world is divided between mages—those who are able to practice magic—and the talentless, who cannot. War has brought the mages into positions of power over the talentless. The mages are the haves, while the talentless are the have-nots.

Kenneth Victeni is a noble mage, whose father, Lord Victeni, is the most powerful battlemage around. Kenneth’s interests don’t lie with war, though. He prefers alchemy, which he is studying at the magi collegiate, where he will shortly graduate.

Necessity brings Kenneth to the talentless slums. He requires a piece of steel for an experiment in class the next day. Inside the shop, he finds himself at the mercy of the shopkeeper with a bad attitude. Kenneth suspects he’s been ripped off on the price, but what can he do? He takes his steel and goes.

Back on his horse once more, an encounter with a small mechanical object spooks his steed and Kenneth is thrown. The man who inadvertently caused his spill rushes to his rescue. Kenneth can’t help but notice how good-looking he is. The man, whose name is Thorn, offers to buy Kenneth a meal and, for reasons unknown to himself, he agrees. During the meal, Thorn reveals that Kenneth has indeed been cheated and offers to find what Kenneth needs and bring it to him at the collegiate. Kenneth is skeptical but he agrees. With the weather changing for the worse, though, he doubts he’ll see the man again.

Why is Thorn acting so mysterious? And someone else is visiting the slums, someone who also has a magic signature. Who can it be and why is he there?

This is the first book in the Enforcers series, and my very first time reading this author. It won’t be the last, by any means. I enjoyed this book immensely, watching Kenneth and Thorn meet, observing their mutual attraction grow, and seeing how they handle certain innate class prejudices on both sides. Thorn has an interesting secret, which Kenneth doesn’t deal with well, at first. And then there is the issue of a lifemate. When a mage finds his lifemate, his power is greatly enhanced. But only two mages can be lifemates—or can they?

The sex was hot, and I loved getting to know Kenneth and Thorn. I bought all four books in the series, so I’ll be writing more reviews. I hope there will be lots more books!

A great read, well done, hot and exciting—a truly enjoyable love story.

Imagine, if you will, a future in which the human race is unable to reproduce—sterilized by chemical weapons—facing extinction. This is the situation faced by a group of aliens known as the Tah’narians. Once a unisexed warrior race, they find the selves about to die out. What can they do but seek outside DNA?

So they approach the leaders of various planets, including Earth. The people of Earth are frightened by the sight of the hovering spacecraft, but world leaders explain the situation and how it will be settled—through the use of human males, who will travel to the Tah’narians’ home world to contribute their DNA. A lottery program is put into effect—a five year plan, which includes young men from twenty-three to twenty-eight.

At seventeen, Dale knows he’s safe from being taken in the yearly ritual which has been nicknamed The Harvest. But he learns that isn’t true when the government comes for him and takes him from his parents, prior to his twenty-third birthday, because apparently Dale has been chosen.

Dale has caught the eye of the starship captain himself, Keyno Shou. Dale is injected with Tah’narian DNA—double-dosed, because of an existing condition he is unaware of—and he finds himself in the hands of Keyno, who is determined to woo and win his mate.

Dale is very much opposed to this idea and wants to go home. He is thrilled to learn that his best friend Chad, harvested a year ago, is on the ship, mated to Keyno’s second-in-command, Gibor. Chad tries to tell Dale everything will be all right. But Dale isn’t convinced—especially when he learns the DNA injections are to prepare him to carry Keyno’s young!

The Harvest is both a romance and a coming-of-age story, set against a sci fi backdrop. Although Dale begins as a hostage to the situation, he quickly learns to adapt to his new life, as Chad has done, and he develops feelings for Keyno. Dale also grows and matures. He brings his own brand of justice to the Tah’narian starship—particularly in interactions with the Onfre, the aliens who originally brought about the current situation, and with the criminal gangs the government offloads on the unsuspecting Tah’narians.

I loved the relationship between Dale and Keyno, as they fell in love and began their lives together. The secondary characters are every bit as rich as the primary. Ms. Church’s writing style is homey and familiar, reflecting her Southern heritage, and liberally sprinkled with humor. Such as Keyno’s “nickname” for Dale—“Dammit Dale”! Dale is very mischievous and at time Keyno is easy to get over on, but then Keyno knows how to turn the tables on Dale when he suffers from an attack of cockiness. Their give and take is priceless. As Dale assimilates into the Tah’narian culture, he invests a bit of himself, and shows them his humanity in the process. The two races gain a greater understanding of one another, as Dale and Keyno look forward to taking the next step together—parenthood.

I can’t wait to read the next book. The sex is hot, and I just love these two to death. You won’t be able to put it down—a must-have book for any collection of m/m novels.

Note: I have to comment on one thing, which is not a reflection on the author. The editing leaves a great deal to be desired, and the editor did a less than stellar job, and failed to omit errors which were pointed out in the editing process (which I was a part of, as a beta). On the whole, I cannot recommend this publisher, but I do recommend this author.
