Virtual Book Tour & Review: Battle Stations

Welcome back my very good friend, fellow author, and co-author, Chris T. Kat, who has written a sequel to the amazing Breeding Stations! Go, Chris!

Battle Stations (Alliances: Book Two)

Author: Chris T. Kat
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
American release date: October 12, 2015
Format/Genre/Length: E-book/M/M Sci Fi/Romance/217 pages
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★

While fighting Tash’Ba war beasts on yet another planet, Berit becomes separated from Tom, Carson, Niyara and the rest and fears he’s about to become elgoth chow. But someone must be watching out for small spunky commanders, and Tom arrives to save the day. A joyful reunion with the rest of the crew is marred by the knowledge that Berit was targeted by the beasts for a particular reason—one which doesn’t sit well with any of them.

This mission has Berit more shook up than usual, and Tom is determined he will get a break before they take on another. When Tom learns that Berit has been avoiding his counseling sessions, he isn’t pleased, and Carson wonders how he got away with not doing something so mandatory. Just Berit being Berit.

Berit, Tom, Niyara, and Carson return to the ship, and unpleasant accusations begin to fly from one of Berit’s previous one-night stands. Why is he so obsessed with Berit? And what lengths will he go to to get his attention?

Things go from bad to worse. The Tash’Ba queen has her sights set on Berit, but why? And what has been done to the beasts to change them? Will they have to start from square one in order to obliterate them? And do they have enough time to do that before doom comes down on the whole human race?

The second book in the Alliances series is every bit as good as the first, continuing where the other left off. Berit is just as spunky and mouthy as ever. The only difference is he’s settled down with Tom, instead of being a sleep-around kind of guy, even if he isn’t exactly ready to admit it yet.

I love the relationship between Carson and Niyara, especially with her being pregnant. I love how she is the dominant one, and how Carson comes to accept that and doesn’t let his fragile male ego get in the way. A lot of m/m books blow women off as almost non-existent, which is so impractical it’s not funny. Hello? There are women in the world, men do not exist in a vacuum, much as some of those authors seem to wish. Relegating them to bitch roles or second bananas is just not very nice (especially as most of those m/m authors are women). Ms. Kat develops a very satisfying secondary m/f relationship which I thoroughly enjoyed. I also love the affection between Berit and Carson, the deep love they share which has never been and never could be physical, thus showing that men can be friends only, just as women can.

I also love the developing relationship of Rene and Ylkurt. Rene lost his beloved wife in the first book, and then learns that Ylkurt—who is male—is his mate. That’s a bit much for a previously hetero male to absorb. But time does heal all wounds, and true love will find a way. Along these same lines, there is Jazzy, Fleur’s baby, who is growing up and has formed an outside bond of her own.

The stars of this book are Berit and Tom, of course, and their relationship. I love seeing them together, love seeing how much in love they are, and to what lengths they will go to in order to protect one another.

Action, romance, suspense, mystery… this book has it all, including memorable characters who will stay with you long after the last page has been turned. I highly recommend this book, but be sure to read the first one first, in order to gain the whole experience. You’ll be glad you did!

Excerpt:
Veering to the left, I allowed myself a quick glance over my shoulder. Not that I saw any chance of the elgoth having lost interest in me, because those fucking beasts never lost interest once they’d set their sights on prey, but sometimes a new prey might attract them more, which I’d have welcomed right then.
My lungs burned and my leg muscles smarted like hell from running like a rabbit through thick brushes and overgrown ferns. I even zigzagged around. Too bad I couldn’t find a rabbit’s hole to hide in.
I had no idea where Tom, Carson, and the rest of the team were, either.
We’d been separated before—it happened when gigantic Tash’Ba war beasts decided we looked good enough to eat—but I’ve never liked it. No, scratch that. Every time it happened, it put the fear of God in me. A gust of warm breath, mingled with some spittle, sprayed my neck. I squeaked and swerved to the right, vaulting over a stunted tree trunk. Seconds later, wood splinters sped past my head, and I lost my footing on the vibrating ground.
I sprawled facedown in the mud, panic sending bolts of confusing messages through my body. Maybe… maybe if I kept completely still, the elgoth wouldn’t touch me? The first time I’d made the acquaintance of one of these towering forty-foot-tall creatures, Tom had instructed me not to move, because they wouldn’t be able to locate us.
It had worked on Ligador and a couple of other breeding stations, but last time a team member tried this approach, the elgoth had roared and ripped him apart. All Tash’Ba war beasts seemed to be altering their tactics, making them even more unpredictable than before.
The mud around me sloshed, almost causing me to inhale some of it. I suppressed the urge to cough and kept my mouth shut as tight as I’d ever done, even though a whimper threatened to spill over my lips any second.
Another gust of foul breath struck my neck. My hair stood on end, my muscles locked in some kind of rigid stupor. That was it. I’d end my life as a morsel for an elgoth.
A blast echoed from the south, and the beast’s breath vanished from my neck. Gunfire followed the blast, and voices filtered through my terrified haze. They’d run right into the elgoth if I didn’t warn them. But… if I moved, or raised my voice, the elgoth would bite my head off. Literally.

My Sexy Saturday #21:

This week's Sexy Saturday has to do with sci fi romance, so I thought I would bring you a little taste of Taz and Reed. You  may remember them from Be My Alien, which M.A. Church and I wrote together. Now they're back, in Be My Human, coming out with Dreamspinner on October 31. Taz is an alien with some unusual qualities, and Reed is his human lover. Enjoy!

Be My Human

“Reed, when can we get the swing you told me about?” He ran his tongue up the inside of Reed’s thighs, over the lightly haired delicate skin.
Reed thought he might lose it then and there. The very thought of having Taz in a swing stirred his imagination and his libido. But that was in the future, certainly not now. “We can’t. Not yet,” he panted. “I don’t think this ceiling… will hold… oh shit…” Before he’d even finished speaking, Taz had pushed him down into one of the two chairs in the room.
“Want to ride you,” Taz moaned. He turned about and bent over, presenting Reed with his plugged ass. “Pull it out, please. It’s time for you to be inside me, not that…”
It was time, Reed agreed, as he carefully removed the toy. He couldn’t help but think of its expensive counterpart, the overindulgent model that had originally brought them together, and he had to smile. This particular version, while not nearly as costly or sparkly, was perfect for their purposes, and had done its job well, keeping Taz simmering all day long. Of course, to be honest, that wasn’t hard for Reed to do.
“Lube, babe,” he murmured. “We need the lube.” He couldn’t resist lightly slapping that magnificent backside, remembering just how wonderful his lover’s dark place tasted. “Hurry,” he added, not sure how long he could keep himself under control. Taz lunged across the bed, not bothering to walk around it. He yanked out the drawer to the side table, spilling the contents on the carpet. Not taking time to pick anything up, he grabbed the tube of lube, rolled over and returned to Reed’s side, holding it out for his use.
God, but Taz was gorgeous… that was the last coherent thought he had as he teased Taz with the plug, sliding it between his legs and rubbing against his balls, before tossing it aside on the table next to him. He spread the slick, cool lube on his dick, hoping the sudden cold would dampen his need to come, and grasped Taz’s hip with one hand. Oh, Taz would ride all right, but he’d do it this way—facing away from him. Reed wanted to see his dick sliding in and out of that quivering hole.

“Straddle me, Taz.” Reed held his dick as Taz scooted back, his legs on either side of Reed’s. “That’s it, babe. Slide down on that dick.”

Guest Blogger: M.A. Church

Good morning, and please welcome my close friend and co-author M.A. Church! Today she's going to talk about her hot new release, Nighttime Wishes! In fact, she's going to control the transmission from here on out. So give her a big round of applause and I'll step out of the way while she gives us a little info on aliens! Here's something to drink, too!

Rosswell – Myth or Fact
According to much widely held public opinion, the United States government successfully recovered the remains of a crashed UFO along with its extraterrestrial occupants near Roswell, New Mexico, in July 8, 1947. In what is now known as the “the Roswell incident,” the U.S. military is said to have quickly covered up the affair and continues to shroud it in extreme secrecy even today.

If these events surrounding Roswell in the summer of 1947 actually took place, as have been claimed in several books on the subject and by numerous UFO researchers, it would certainly constitute the story of the millennium and be the greatest government-sponsored coverup of all time. Indeed, should irrefutable evidence ever surface that any government on this earth possessed the physical remains of either an extraterrestrial spacecraft or its occupants, it is an understatement to say that such a revelation would fundamentally transform humanity as we know it.

Now… according to Ziang, Daroshi’s commanding officer, there was a crash. How does he know this? LOL. He was involved. He was there. And guess, what? Aliens do exist and have visited Earth.

*Grin* Bryan can tell you all about aliens and their tentacles. ;)

Be careful what you wish for...

The first time Daroshi spotted Bryan, the Maz’Rarian warrior knew he wanted the small town sheriff as his mate. Things have been going downhill since. Daroshi doesn’t have experience dealing with humans, especially a very unhappy human male who’s just had his well-planned life jerked out from under him. Little does Daroshi know the changes Bryan will insist be made to help him adjust. But he also never dreamed someone would actually try to kill his mate.

The shocks just keep coming for Sheriff Bryan Coltrane. Finding out aliens exist was bad enough. Finding himself mated to one was definitely not on his to-do list. Wait, what? Did someone say tentacles? And if that’s not enough, a killer tried to poison him. Added to his misery, now he’s on his way to another planet—a planet that he hates on sight. How’s he supposed to survive in such a cold, ugly industrialized world? Can you take the country out of the boy without killing his spirit?

As Bryan struggles to adapt, a killer plots to end his new life... before it even begins.

Excerpt:

The stress of the past few weeks sure caught up with him—saying he was gaunt was putting it nicely. His sapphire blue eyes were sunken in his head and the laugh lines around his eyes slashed deeper into his face. The dark circles didn’t help matters, either. God, he looked like he had two black eyes. The skin was that nasty bruise color and puffy.
And were there more than a few strands of gray in his dark hair now? At age thirty-four this was ridiculous. That’s what stress would do, though, and this was about as stressful a situation as he’d ever been in. Bryan sighed. The poisoning deal scared him; he could have died. Should have died, actually. Someone was after his ass and they didn’t know whom. On top of that, they were hurtling through space toward a planet he’d soon be calling home. With an alien.
Yeah, stressful. “Shit,” he muttered. “Things have got to get—”
“Bryan!”
Bryan flinched at the roar from the other room. Damn, do these aliens know how to do anything other than yell?
“Where are you? Bryan? Bryan! By the stars, answer me!”
A loud crash echoed into the bathroom.
“Oh, for God’s sake.” Bryan shook his head. What the hell was Daroshi doing out there? Tearing Medical apart looking for him? Did Daroshi think he’d… what? Run away? Where was there to run? Besides, he had someone trying to kill him. He damn sure wasn’t going to go wandering the halls alone.
“Bryan!”
“I’m in here, Daroshi.”
Daroshi slammed into the bathroom area, chest heaving and tentacles writhing on his back. Jesus, he looked fierce. “What are you doing?”
“Playing checkers.” Bryan rolled his eyes. “What do you think I’m doing in here? It’s a bathroom. Come on, big guy, you figure it out. Jeez.”
Daroshi leaned against the doorframe, the rise and fall of his chest slowing. “I’m not even going to ask what this ‘checkers’ means. Bryan, the medibed stopped monitoring your stats. The low beeping noise ceased. I woke up thinking there was something wrong, and instead I find you’re… You weren’t there.”
“Aw, man, I didn’t think. I had to use the bathroom and… What are you doing?” Bryan grabbed hold of Daroshi’s shoulders as his feet left the ground.
Daroshi hoisted Bryan into his arms, growling loudly even as a tentacle snaked across one massive shoulder to pet Bryan. “I’m taking you back to the medibed. You know, it’s that thing that monitors your body’s systems. You were poisoned and shouldn’t be up. Do you understand how serious this is?”
Huh, sarcasm. “Since I was the one poisoned I’d have to say that yeah, I get it.” Bryan rested his head against Daroshi’s neck. Good thing he already went to the bathroom. “Wow, is that your best bedside manner? Because I have to tell you, it leaves a lot to be desired.”
“Waking up and finding you missing left a lot to be desired.” Daroshi gently lowered Bryan back down onto the medibed. “Do not do that again.”

M.A. Church bio

M.A. Church lives in the southern United States and spent many years in the elementary education sector. She is married to her high school sweetheart and they have two children. Her hobbies are gardening, walking, attending flea markets, watching professional football, racing, and spending time with her family on the lake.
But her most beloved hobby is reading. From an early age, she can remember hunting for books at the library. Later nonhuman and science fiction genres captured her attention and drew her into the worlds the authors had created. But always at the back of her mind was the thought that one day, when the kids were older and she had more time, she would write a book.
By sheer chance, she stumbled across a gay male romance story on the web and was hooked. A new world opened up and she fell in love. Thus the journey started. When not writing or researching, she enjoys reading the latest erotic and mainstream romance novels.

My Sexy Saturday #15: Be My Human

Happy Weekend, everyone! And welcome to more of My Sexy Saturday, where we showcase WIP's or published works and show off our sexy couples!

This week, I'm offering a little snippet from a book that will be published this fall by Dreamspinner Press. Be My Human is the sequel to Be My Alien, and it's the joint effort of author M.A. Church (The Harvest, Nighttime series) and myself. Our couple is Taz and Reed, and I think the excerpt speaks for itself.  Enjoy!

“Gok,” Reed grunted, then cleared his throat. Fuck, Taz had sucked the ability to speak right out of him, through his cock. It had been much too long since the last time he’d gotten a blowjob. “I mean good. That’s good. Straddle me, babe.”
Taz stole a quick kiss, then swung a leg over Reed’s lap, balancing himself over the cock that pointed directly up at his ass. “As sexy as I think it is to be undressed while you’re still clothed, I think we might need to get your shirt out of the way.” What a time for his kitten to be practical.
“Just shove it the fuck out of the way then,” Reed growled. The head of his dick brushed Taz’s hole. He was going to start foaming at the mouth if he didn’t get in there and damn soon. How the hell Taz was still able to make any sort of sense was beyond him. His own thought processes were shot to hell. Reed tightened his hand around Taz’s slim hips and grunted when Taz finally pushed his shirt out of the way. “Taz… please.”
Taz impudently flicked his nipples and Reed saw stars. Another odd sound exploded out of him. He bit his lip when Taz wiggled then began the slow descent down his shaft. The need to just sink his fingers into Taz’s hips and slam him down was nearly overwhelming. He wanted to thrust, God he wanted to thrust… almost more than he wanted his next breath. The only thing that stopped him was how much that would hurt his lover. That, and the fact Taz would probably rip him to shreds with his claws. Which he would fucking well deserve since they were only using spit as lube. Rough was fine, bloody wasn’t cool—he knew that firsthand.
“Oh babe, God, you’re so tight. Does it hurt?”
Taz slipped down a little farther. Reed felt his tail make an appearance, jerking behind him. “Burns a little, but it’s not bad.”
“There’s that tail.” Reed flexed his hands on Taz’s hips. “Take your time. I want this to be good for both of us.”

Now see what the other authors are doing!

The Harvest Review

The Harvest: Taken   Review

Author: MA Church
Publisher: Storm Moon Press
American release date: October 30, 2013
Format/Genre/Length: E-book/M/M SciFi Romance/274 pages
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★

Imagine, if you will, a future in which the human race is unable to reproduce—sterilized by chemical weapons—facing extinction. This is the situation faced by a group of aliens known as the Tah’narians. Once a unisexed warrior race, they find the selves about to die out. What can they do but seek outside DNA?

So they approach the leaders of various planets, including Earth. The people of Earth are frightened by the sight of the hovering spacecraft, but world leaders explain the situation and how it will be settled—through the use of human males, who will travel to the Tah’narians’ home world to contribute their DNA. A lottery program is put into effect—a five year plan, which includes young men from twenty-three to twenty-eight.

At seventeen, Dale knows he’s safe from being taken in the yearly ritual which has been nicknamed The Harvest. But he learns that isn’t true when the government comes for him and takes him from his parents, prior to his twenty-third birthday, because apparently Dale has been chosen.

Dale has caught the eye of the starship captain himself, Keyno Shou. Dale is injected with Tah’narian DNA—double-dosed, because of an existing condition he is unaware of—and he finds himself in the hands of Keyno, who is determined to woo and win his mate.

Dale is very much opposed to this idea and wants to go home. He is thrilled to learn that his best friend Chad, harvested a year ago, is on the ship, mated to Keyno’s second-in-command, Gibor. Chad tries to tell Dale everything will be all right. But Dale isn’t convinced—especially when he learns the DNA injections are to prepare him to carry Keyno’s young!

The Harvest is both a romance and a coming-of-age story, set against a sci fi backdrop. Although Dale begins as a hostage to the situation, he quickly learns to adapt to his new life, as Chad has done, and he develops feelings for Keyno. Dale also grows and matures. He brings his own brand of justice to the Tah’narian starship—particularly in interactions with the Onfre, the aliens who originally brought about the current situation, and with the criminal gangs the government offloads on the unsuspecting Tah’narians.

I loved the relationship between Dale and Keyno, as they fell in love and began their lives together. The secondary characters are every bit as rich as the primary. Ms. Church’s writing style is homey and familiar, reflecting her Southern heritage, and liberally sprinkled with humor. Such as Keyno’s “nickname” for Dale—“Dammit Dale”! Dale is very mischievous and at time Keyno is easy to get over on, but then Keyno knows how to turn the tables on Dale when he suffers from an attack of cockiness. Their give and take is priceless. As Dale assimilates into the Tah’narian culture, he invests a bit of himself, and shows them his humanity in the process. The two races gain a greater understanding of one another, as Dale and Keyno look forward to taking the next step together—parenthood.

I can’t wait to read the next book. The sex is hot, and I just love these two to death. You won’t be able to put it down—a must-have book for any collection of m/m novels.

Note: I have to comment on one thing, which is not a reflection on the author. The editing leaves a great deal to be desired, and the editor did a less than stellar job, and failed to omit errors which were pointed out in the editing process (which I was a part of, as a beta). On the whole, I cannot recommend this publisher, but I do recommend this author.
