AMC has two new hits on its hands, and you can find both series on Sunday nights - The Walking Dead, now in its second season, and the new offering, Hell on Wheels. Both original, and both well done shows in completely different genres. Kudos to AMC for going outside of the box and doing more than simply showing movies. I hope that they find more such worthy candidates in the future, although not to the exclusion of the movies, of course.
Hell on Wheels is a very visually appealing series. I enjoy the look of it, as well as the feel of it. The character development is great. There's a great deal of social commentary here, threaded in with the history. It doesn't sugarcoat the attitudes of the times toward the various groups; they're all represented here. From the former slaves to the Indians, to women and Christians and even the former Confederate soldiers who are simply trying to get by. ****Spoilers ahead***** Last episode, we saw Cullen kill the foreman of the railroad gang, because of what he did to his wife, for which he was incarcerated by the Big Swede (who's actually Norwegian, but that's another story), made his escape and boldly asked Colm Meaney for the dead man's job - and got it. This week we watch as he finds the clue to the other man he needs to kill to avenge his wife's death. And we see more of the widow with the plans. And the two Irish brothers who run the show, and are looking to make their fortune. I love history, and this series just brings it to life very well. I hope it continues for some time to come.
As for The Walking Dead - next week is the mid-season finale (it seems as though most of the shows are shutting down until January - bummer!) This week, we watched as Lori tried to abort the baby she carries, and fails, and confesses to Rick about her and Shane. His reaction wasn't what I expected. Also we learn about the walkers in the barn and why they're there. Sophia has been missing for several episodes now - I have to wonder if she'll ever be found. Everyone is learning to defend themselves, and Carl wants to learn too. He has a tendency to turn to Shane for parental permission, and I have to wonder if this will create friction between Shane and Rick at some point. It's a harsh post-apocalyptic world, one I'm not sure I'd want to survive in. It's also about the survival of the human spirit.
I'm really enjoying Grimm, Friday nights on NBC. Last week's episode was Lonelyhearts and dealt with a Bluebeard who attracted women to himself and killed them. In this episode we saw more of Captain Renard, in his dealings with a grim reaper - my speculation is that the Captain is the devil. We'll see. I'm really liking Wolfy more and more, he makes a great, albeit unwilling sidekick, to Nick. I hope this show continues for a while. I believe more scripts have been ordered.
Last night the theme of Next Iron Chef was Improvisation, as the chefs were taken to a comedy club in LA, where Kevin Nealon was the host. With the participation of the audience, he made a list of ingredients, and pared it down to four which the chefs had to use in their challenge - octopus, kumquats, tortillas, and marshmallows. Quite the challenge! The winner of that challenge was Chef Chiarello. At the bottom were Chefs Samuellson, Zakarian and MacMillan, but Marcus lived to cook another day, and the other two had to face off. The secret ingredient was coconut. Chef Geoffrey did two dishes, despite the repeated warnings from the judges that it's not a good thing to do. Luckily, he made something really really good, and he squeaked through. Good-bye Chef MacMillan. Sorry, not sobbing over this one. I like seeing more of chefs I never got the chance to actually see in action - such as Alex and Geoffrey. I think both are strong contenders, but I think Anne Burrell is even more so. From now on, the competition will only get fiercer.
Alas for no Sweet Genius, but I hear they are recruiting cast members for a second season, so that's wonderful news. As I mentioned before, Justified will be back in January. A lot of shows are going on hiatus til then, I've noticed. I hope Californication comes back soon, and The Borgias. Cesare Borgia - well, he's to die for, he's so hot.
My dream job would be to someday have a series of my own on cable. I dream of seeing To The Max as a series. I'd also love to do a historical, something that makes history more real and interesting to people. Most history teachers seem determined to make their students dislike it because of the way they teach it. If I'd ever have become a teacher, it would have been history, I love it that much. And I'd have tried to make it alive and real, like it was when it happened. I hope I do that with the historicals that I write, anyway.
That's all for now. Back to editing and writing! Working on something secret (not writing, a craft type thing), but I can't say too much, it's a secret. When I'm done, I'll take a picture and post it. Home made gifts rule, I think.
Until next time, take care!

Horrible Houses and Horrible Restaurants and then some
*****Spoilers ahead beware****
I think that writers can't help but be influenced by what they see, read, and experience. It's often reflected in their work. Perhaps that explains my new Silver Flash - Dallas in Wonderland. Something a little different, probably the influence of American Horror Story. ****Spoiler alert***** I've completely caught up with the series now, and am definitely loving it. It's like peeling an onion, pulling away the layers to get to the inner core. Assuming there is one. Ben and Vivien are splitting up after she discovered his infidelity with Hayden continued and resulted in a child. Of course Vivien has no idea that Hayden is lying dead beneath the new gazebo which Ben had to put up. In this episode, "Open House", Vivien discovers that she is carrying twins. Shades of Rosemary's Baby! I can't help but remember the man in black who had sex with her, never saying a word. She assumed it was Ben - I'm not so sure. In this episode, we learn more about Larry and his history, which he's been lying about, as well as his obsession with Constance. An Armenian gentleman wants to buy Murder House and tear it down - but Constance and Larry and Moira conspire against him. This series just keeps on getting better and better, and in next week's previews, I caught a glimpse of Zachary Quinto. Can't wait.
Guess what else I saw while watching this episode? A preview for Justified! Hooray! It's coming back in January. I also saw an ad for a new Anthony Bourdain show on the Travel Channel, coming soon. Might have to check that out.
Lately, I've been watching back episodes of Robert Irvine's Restaurant Impossible. At times it's somewhat formulaic - restaurant owners needs help, writes Robert and he shows up to turn things around, with certain inevitable pitfalls - I find each episode interesting and worth watching. In fact, I've seen some of them now often enough to recognize them when they start. I do like the series, and I like the way he shows them how to change a losing proposition into a winning one. Sometimes that's all you need, somebody to kick your butt and show you the way. Some of the restaurants I've seen make me wonder why the health department hasn't shut them down. Robert's designers take a limited budget and bring freshness to these places, while Robert shows the owners how to run the business, to understand pricing and food costs, while he shows the chefs how they should be cooking. I've gained a whole new respect for Chef Robert after watching these shows. I hope the series continues for some time to come.
On the Next Iron Chef, the wily Chairman presented the potential Iron Chefs with a sweet challenge - make a sweet and a savory dish from candy. Chef Alex had the advantage and assigned everyone their ingredient. I've found that often times what appears to be a disadvantage for one of the chefs turns out to be a good thing and brings out hidden depths. It can also be a downfall. Chef Falkner won this week with her malted milk ball creations. At the bottom of the pack were Chefs Hughes, McMillan and Guarnaschelli, but Alex was given a reprieve, and the other two were sent into the sudden death secret ingredient challenge. The ingredient was tofu. Although the judges repeatedly tell the chefs that less is better than more, Chef McMillan did three tofu dishes to Hughes' one - and won. Next week's episode has to do with comedy, and I saw Kevin Nealon in the previews. Bye bye Chef Hughes.
The more of Once Upon a Time I see, the more I like, as Emma gets more and more involved with the people of Storybrooke, and with her son Henry, and fighting the curse laid upon the town and its inhabitants by the Evil Queen, aka the Mayor. This week's episode was The Price of Gold and featured the story of Cinderella, both in the present and in the past. In this version, Ella is an unwed mother who is being forced to give up her unborn child to Mr. Gold, the pawnbroker, who is actually Rumpelstiltskin - mirroring the past. In the process, Emma learns that you can't run away from your life, and she accepts an offer to be a deputy to the Sheriff - unaware that he is sleeping with the Mayor. An unexpected twist which we learned at the end of the episode. I have to admit, I didn't expect much from this show, but it's been a delight to find how good it really is. If only ABC could keep this quality going. But then again, they also brought back Charlie's Angels. The first time was bad enough, seriously? But all's well that ends well. I just found out it was scratched after four episodes. Good news indeed.
All for now. I'll talk about Hell on Wheels and Walking Dead and Grimm another time. Back to editing and writing and house cleaning!
Have a wonderful day! Feel free to comment or question - I'd love to hear from you!
Until next time, take care!

Dallas in Wonderland #2
The dream began in the usual way—a seductive Quentin beckoning to Dallas with that familiar come hither expression in his pale blue eyes. At one time, Dallas would’ve followed the sexy brunet anywhere, and in his dreams he still did. There was never any rhyme or reason to the locations; tonight’s was no exception.
HOSPITAL the flashing red neon lights proclaimed, but when Dallas pushed open the doors to what should have been the emergency room, it was eerily silent, not a doctor or nurse in sight. Not a single patient either. Not even a zombie. Last night’s dream was filled with them, so that was a blessed relief.
Giggling at the end of the corridor. There he was. Quentin Mandrake. Ex lover and present torturer. Dallas trotted down the empty hallway, almost knocking over a cart full of medical supplies in his haste to reach the end. And Quentin. But the bastard managed to stay just ahead of him. Dallas caught a glimpse of his mop of dark curls, and rounded the corner, sure he’d caught up with him.
Another dead end.
Nowhere to go but through a set of double doors marked OR. Normally, Dallas wouldn’t dream of invading an operating room, but nothing about this was normal; it vibrated with a surreal intensity. Resolutely, he pushed open the doors and was greeted by blackness. A complete lack of light. It was darker in that room than the Bat Cave at midnight.
Dallas had watched the series and every version of the movies ever made, so he understood about the Bat Cave.
Suddenly, as if a switch had been thrown, the room was flooded with light. There before him stood not Quentin, but the mysterious Dr. Samuel Levi, behind an operating table. He wore traditional surgical garb—scrubs, mask and latex gloves. His long braid hung over his shoulder; a single lotus blossom was tucked behind one ear.
“Welcome my lovely one,” the doctor intoned in a breathy voice.
Dallas grew hot and cold as that voice washed over him. Hot and cold and quite hard.
“Come over here, you can be my assistant,” the doctor beckoned.
“I’m a chef, not a surgeon, Dr. Levi,” Dallas protested.
“Today you can be my nurse.” Dr. Levi smiled, his glance raking over Dallas. Dallas looked down to find he was wearing a nurse’s uniform, complete with white Dr. Scholl’s and white lace stockings. He touched his head—yep, even a hair net. His eyes went wide. He found himself obeying doctor’s orders and joining him on the other side of the table.
“Scalpel, please, Nurse Dallas.” The pseudo-surgeon held out an expectant hand.
Dallas had seen enough medical shows to know that there should be a tray of instruments close at hand. He glanced about him, searching for them. He couldn’t help but notice that the doctor’s legs were clad in black fishnet stockings. A shiver ran through his frame. Forcing himself to focus, he found the gleaming surgical tools, and reached for a scalpel, trying not to think about what might be under the scrubs. As he handed the instrument to Dr. Levi, it suddenly changed into a dagger.
The doctor didn’t seem fazed by this turn of events. He smiled, revealing glistening white teeth. “Will you please administer the anesthesia?”
Now I’m the gas passer too?
As if he could read Dallas’ mind, Dr. Levi solemnly handed him a cartoonishly large mallet.
“Hammereetis?” Dallas heard himself ask. When the doctor nodded, he struck the patient with the hammer. Clonk! Cuckoo birds flew above the man’s head. He was obviously out for the count.
“Shall we begin with the heart?” Dr. Levi raised questioning brows at Dallas.
Heart? What?
“An eye for eye. A heart for a heart. He stole yours, now we’ll take his.”
His? Whose?
Dallas turned horrified eyes to the man on the table, seeing him for the first time. Quentin’s frightened gaze looked back at him, mouth covered in duct tape. He was bound to the table with day-glo straps which made movement entirely not optional.
“I know a lovely recipe,” the surgeon continued. “All we need is a little chianti and some fava beans. Unless of course you prefer a merlot? Your choice.” He took the dagger in both hands and raised it above Quentin’s body. Dallas’ ex screamed with his eyes. Dallas found he could not look away from the sight, as the dagger plunged into Quentin’s body. Blood splattered on him, as well as on Dr. Levi. Reaching into the gaping wound, the surgeon scooped out the heart, and one-handedly presented it to Dallas.
“Would you care to deal with this?”
“What should I do?”
Dr. Levi grabbed Dallas’ hand with his free hand, and pressed the bloody bit of flesh into it. “It would make a wonderful aphrodisiac,” he said, bringing his face closer to Dallas’. Dallas moaned, his lips parting in breathy anticipation. Doctor Levi’s face floated closer… and closer…
Dallas sat bolt upright, his heart hammering in his chest. His bedroom was dark, save for what moonlight filtered through the lightweight curtains. He fought to bring his breathing under control, trying to remember the relaxation technique his sister had taught him once. Something akin to Lamaze. Minus the baby.
Maybe a glass of water would help.
He threw back the sheet; it clung to his body. Frowning, he noticed that it was unaccountably wet. When had he undressed? He never slept in the nude. And he hadn’t had a wet dream since adolescence. Until tonight.
He rose and yanked the sheet off the bed, a moue of distaste crossing his face. He headed to the bathroom to clean up the residue from the odd dream. And then he heard it again. The scrabbling noises over his head.
He was going to have to insist that Mrs. Persepolis do something about those rats, or he might just have to buy some traps and take them up there himself.

Winter Demon Volume 3 Review
Winter Demon, Volume 3
Author: Yamila Abraham
Distributor: Yaoi Press
American release date: 2008
Format/Genre: Manga/Yaoi
Publisher/Industry Age Rating: Mature
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★
Similar series or titles to check out: 9th Sleep
Hakuin and Fuyu deliver the healed girl to her home, which is in the monk's village of Morikoku. Fuyu wishes to spend the night, to get a chance to fondle Hakuin in privacy now that the girl is gone, but the monk insists they need to get to Priest Shidan to fix the demon whip, so Fuyu contents himself with telling Hakuin, in very graphic language, just what he would like to do to him, as they go on their way. As they near the priest's house, they run into another demon - one who has eyes for Fuyu! It turns out to be none other than Figaru. It seems that Shidan cannot fix the weapon, he must take it to his mentor, who cannot abide demons, so only Hakuin may accompany him. Which leaves Fuyu alone with the horny incubus! Although Shidan does contain him in a magic circle, the only concession he is willing to make to Fuyu's safety. Thanks a lot, Priest Shidan!
Synopsis:
Alarming news arrives the next morning, and the two demons set off after Hakuin and Shidan. Which is just what Shidan's mentor wants, for this is a trap she has laid purposly for the Winter Demon - she has a score to settle with him for some past wrongs. In the aftermath, Hakuin broaches a rather delicate subject - that Figaru needs Fuyu to heal. To what lengths will the demon go in order to please his little monk? And what of his new knowledge, of things he wasn't meant to know? Hakuin isn't healing properly, he needs to see a doctor, so he asks Fuyu to take him back to Morikoku, to Doctor Takuma.
In the Epilogue, we meet Doctor Takuma, who is searching for a particular medicinal leaf he needs to help heal his sister; his supply is out so he is searching in a dangerous area, as there is said to be a demon there. But he is determined to help his sister. He is discovered there by the demon, Lord Ryuuto, who takes him to help his ailing wife - but he wishes her taken out of life, not brought back! (As a healer, he could cure her himself, but he cannot kill her) When Takuma eases her from her pain, Ryuuto says he can use the spring whenever he likes, but he won't agree to heal Takuma's sister. The doctor returns to avail himself of the wonderful hot spring, and he finds himself fascinated by the conversations he has with the demon. Ryuuto realizes that the doctor feels an attraction for him, and he is certainly attracted to the human, so he makes him a rather unusual proposal - of marriage! The confused doctor returns home to think. But his ruminations are interrupted by news of a battle - there are wounded coming, lots of them. And he receives assistance from an unexpected source!
Commentary:
By now, the story of the Winter Demon has wrapped itself about my curiousity and my need to know. The character development is good, as we follow these two in their courtship. I hope that Fuyu's newfound knowledge won't queer things for them - no pun intended. And I hope tha the will be able to overcome his past. To err is human, to forgive divine. Does this go for demons too? There are some interesting questions brought into play in this volume about relationships, intimacy, and sex versus love. This is probably the same school of thought used by those who seek out sex therapists, the rationale being that it's medicinal, not sexual. You'll have to decide that for yourself. But there's certainly stuff to mull over in this volume.
The addition of Doctor Takuma is an interesting one - now we have a potential new couple on our hands, and a rather comely one at that. Ryuuto seems to have promise, but at the same time he's a bit of a bad boy; automatic turn-on for a lot of women. I am curious to see how this thing with him and Doctor T works out.
Winter Demon has not only founds its pace, Yamila Abraham is hitting her stride, and hitting it well. The action flows smoothly, with a good balance between action and introspection, never leaving out that element of heat, in the form of the demon's narrated fantasy (with visual aids, of course!), which is pretty damn hot. I, for one, hope Fuyu gets his way, I'd surely like to see that. At the end of the volume there is a preview for Volume 2 of another Yaoi Press offering, Dark Prince.
We're almost to the finish line, enquiring minds need to know - will Fuyu prove that his love for Hakuin is genuine, and will the purification mumbo jumbo prove to be just that, and not the glue that binds them together? Stay tuned, yaoi lovers, for the last exciting volume!

Hell on Wheels, Next Iron Chef and more
Last weekend AMC premiered another new series, Hell on Wheels. It airs on Sunday night, same night as their other original series, The Walking Dead. Hell on Wheels is the name of a town, it's set post Civil War and concerns the building of the Transcontinental railroad. Colm Meaney (DS9) is determined to not only get that railroad built but to make as much money as he can in the process - no matter what the cost. Anson Mount plays Cullen Bohannan, a former Confederate soldier, who's bent on revenge against the Union soldiers that murdered his wife. ***spoilers***** In the first episode, we see Ted Levine (Silence of the Lambs, Monk) in a role that reminded me of the one he played in Wild Wild West, General Bloodbath McGrath. Minus the ear trumpet. Alas, that's the only episode we'll see him in. Colm Meaney makes a good bad guy - ruthless, money hungry and cold - quite different from the Chief O'Brien we knew and loved on DS9. The show looks really good. The cinematography is very well done, I really enjoyed the look of it. I found the story interesting, the characters too, and I look forward to seeing more.
This episode of Next Iron Chef took us to the San Diego Padre stadium, where the chefs were told to change up some ballpark food, utilizing ball park ingredients. Alex Guarnaschelli hit a home run with her dishes, so much so that the judges had nothing to say to her - they were perfect. Geoffrey Zakarian made great food, but they warned him he wasn't following the rules. He found himself in the bottom three but squeaked by, leaving Robert Irvine and Michael Chiarello as the bottom two who had to do the sudden death mystery basket face off. The secret ingredient, in keeping with the ball park theme, was peanuts. Unfortunately, the casualty was Chef Robert. I've come to like him on Restaurant Impossible. I was sorry to see him go. Marcus received a warning that if he continued to overcook, he would have to choose the two he wanted to represent him in future. Sarah and I think Anne Burrell has a good shot at becoming the Next Iron Chef.
I watched last night's Grimm this morning. The episode was entitled "Beeware", and concerned a flash mob murder. A guy gets on a bus carrying a duffle bag. Everyone looks nervous, especially when he opens it. But then he pulls out a boom box and "YMC A" begins to play and everyone rocks out. They all get off at the same stop - except for one woman. She's dead. This episode involves bees, and the guest star was Nana Visitor (Kira from DS9). I am really enjoying this series, and we are learning more about the mysterious blonde woman who tried to kill Nick's aunt. He is forced to protect her in this episode. I really like his wolfy sidekick too, his reluctant henchman. I hope it lasts for a while.
Hawaii 5-0 was good, as always.Danno is dealing with moving to smaller digs in the form of a sleazy motel, and this episode sees him gain a four legged friend, whose owner has been killed. In this episode, Greg Grunberg guest stars (Matt Parkman, Heroes) and it was funny to see him and Max (who played Hiro on Heroes) reunite. Max kept asking did he know him. Great scene. Beautiful scenery, great banter between Steve McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) and Danno (Scott Caan), and any scene with Alex in it! Hope it lasts for a while.
Vampire Diaries - what can I say? The only thing it has going for it, as far as I'm concerned, is Damon Salvatore (Ian Sommerhalder). Sometimes the writing verges on the ridiculous, the plots are stupid, and I hate the flashbacks to the past. God knows what they're going to do with the cave drawings they've recently found, unless it's just what they're doing now - tieing it all in with Klaus and Michael. ****Spoilers******* When Stefan screwed up Damon's carefully laid plan, I wanted to choke him. Until I found out why he did it. Then I had to forgive him, of course. He has his humanity back - oh joy. Now I guess we'll be forced to endure him and Elena as a couple again. Not that I think that will stop Damon, alas, from pining over her. What does he see in her? I'll never know.
More later about Once Upon a Time and Top Chef Texas.
Til next time, take care!
