Happy Valentine's Day to everyone!
Not everyone celebrates this day, I know. Some people, like me, don't have a special someone in their lives. That doesn't matter, though. Who doesn't love the idea of love?
Today being Valentine's Day, I'm going to talk about some of the shows I love that I've been watching lately.
Forever: Tuesdays on ABC
This is a show about an immortal medical examiner. That alone piqued my interest. But watching the show, I've fallen in love with it. Ioan Gruffudd plays Henry Morgan. For two hundred years, he has been unable to die, doomed to watch those he loves do what he cannot. During the Second World War, he adopted an infant abandoned at a concentration camp. That child is now fully grown, Abraham, and is played by Judd Hirsch. Alana de la Garza plays Jo Martinez, a cop whose husband has recently died.
I love the way Henry solves cases. I love the cases. I love the relationship between him and Jo. I love
the relationship between him and Lucas, his wisecracking geeky assistant. But most of all I love the relationship between Henry and Abe. I look forward to watching this every week, and hope it is picked up for another season.
Constantine: Fridays, NBC
To prepare for this show, I read the Hellblazer comics, I'd already seen the movie, with Keanu Reeves, and liked it, because I didn't know any better. Boy, did they get it wrong. Who the hell ever chose Keanu Reeves for that role?
In the TV series, Matt Ryan is a perfect John Constantine. Although the show deviates from canon a bit, it's close enough for government work, and very well done. The angel, Manny, isn't part of the book verse, but I like him. And Zed is a little different, but I like the differences. Ryan nails Constantine with every word, every action, with every breath he takes. He IS John Constantine.
Where the movie totally bolluxed the character of Chas, the series does it right, with a little twist. For those of you who don't know John, he's an irreverent, sarcastic exorcist - a mage, if you will, whose soul was condemned to Hell for an act committed in the ignorance of youth, for which he wishes to atone. He can be a right selfish son of a bitch, but underneath it all, he has a large heart.
This is another show I'm worried won't be renewed. It's awesome.
Sleepy Hollow: Mondays, Fox
I've loved this show from the beginning, and it just keeps on getting better. This season, we saw the
bad seed return - aka Henry, son of Ichabod and Katrina Crane. Also back is Captain Irving, which is pretty good, since he died last season. Ichabod and Katrina's marriage is on shaky ground, which I can't say breaks my heart since I intensely dislike her. Ichabod is assimilating more and more into modern life. I suspect there are some rough times ahead, especially for the two Witnesses.
I imagine they have two horsemen left to contend with, and who knows what else. I hope this continues for a long while, and maybe Ichabod and Abby Mills can deep their relationship.
Coming back soon are The Following and The Vikings. Sarah and I are still catching up on Person of Interest. We're almost done with Season Three now. It's been an interesting, albeit sad season, with the loss of one of the team. I wasn't surprised since I saw she had a new series coming out. The loony tunes woman who thinks she's in touch personally with the computer is still around. She gets on my nerves. I've come to like Shaw, though.
Another season of Top Chef just ended. My favorite chef won, Chef Mei, but I have to say this season wasn't particularly memorable. I hope the next one is better. I still wish they'd put Sweet Genius back on. I miss seeing Chef Ron.
Going to leave you here, hope everyone's having a great day!
Happy Valentine's Day!

An unexpected holiday
It looks like my previous plans have been upended. I'd anticipated working next week, but I learned yesterday that is not the case. As of now, I'm not even sure when I'm going back to work. Again. That's the problem with temporary jobs, they're so... temporary.
Well, I could sit around and piss and moan about it, but what will that accomplish? Not a damn thing. Or I can take these lemons and make lemonade. I opt to do that! I have editing to do, and I have books to write. I hope to finish When Will I See You Again and sub it by the year's end, so maybe that's a good thing, right? Right!
Sarah and I went to see The Hobbit last weekend. It was AMAZING! If you're a fan of Lord of the Rings, you have to see this. It was everything I'd hoped for and more, including familiar faces I'd not expected to see. There are a lot of people in this movie, well worth a trip to IMDB to look them up, because frankly you won't recognize many of them with the great make-up jobs they have. For example, Bofur is James Nesbitt, who played Jekyll in the BBC mini-series. I would never have guessed. Yes, it's nearly three hours long - all the LOTR films are. But I have to tell you, it doesn't feel like it. In fact, I was so engrossed in what was happening, and had just settled down to watch more, when suddenly, the film was done. I can't wait for next year, to see the second part.
Of course we saw some trailers while we were there, but nothing I'd rush out to see. Except for one thing, and it wasn't even a movie trailer, it was a promo for a TV series that is returning in January. One of my very favorites. Sarah and I got so excited to see that! Yes, it's Justified! Coming back January 8th, I believe, and looking awesome! If you watched it last season, then you know about Bobby Quartles. And Winona. And a whole lot of stuff. Can't wait to see what happens.
I'm behind on watching programs, I admit, because of working, which is actually a good thing. Other than the ones Sarah and I watch together, such as Next Iron Chef Redemption, Sunday nights on Food Network. In fact, it's almost over now, down to three chefs - Alex Guarnaschelli, Amanda Freitag and Nate Appleman. The finale is Sunday, and I predict that Chef Appleman will be eliminated right away and the two women chefs will battle for the title. Katie is rooting for Amanda, I know, but I'm in Alex's corner. I think it would be so cool if she made it, and if Geoffrey was to work as her sous chef, like she does for him. Guess we'll find out Sunday, should be a good battle. Go, Alex!
Top Chef Seattle is progressing smoothly as the field is narrowed every week. I was so grateful that they eliminated Carla, she got on my last nerve. As the weak ones are being picked off, the stronger chefs survive, although there are still a few I'd like to see gone. My favorite chef is Kristen, who is a model. She did very well this week, winning both challenges. Here she is, being kissed by Stefan. Stefan is a gruff and grumbly guy, and he didn't make a lot of friends in season 5 of Top Chef. But I rather like him, despite that, mostly because he and Fabio are good friends and I love Fabio.
Speaking of Fabio, he's the only reason I even watch Life After Top Chef, frankly. It's him, Richard, Spike and Jen. Richard's okay, but I don't like Spike and I really can't stand Jen. I love Fabio, though, and would watch him in anything. Seriously. Put him in a show, and I'm there. Someday I hope to be able to eat at his restaurant. He is so sexy, and such a hard worker, and such a gentleman! If they got rid of the other three chefs, I'd never miss them. Just give me Fabio and I'll be happy!
Sarah and I are still watching Person of Interest, and this season is definitely a worthy addition to the series, beginning with Harold's kidnapping by a crazy woman. I love the relationship between Harold and John, and learning more about both of them. Watching Reese's fights is... well... exhilarating. I hope it's mandatory that he has at least one fight scene per episode, as they are damned exciting, and very sexy. I am never disappointed in any of the episodes, and I hope the show continues for a long time to come. I love that Carter and Fusco know about one another now, and that they all seem to be working for a common good. I predict that at some point, Lionel's number is going to come up in the machine. I also love Enrico Colantoni's Elias - he's a very clever and fascinating villain who wields great power, even from prison.
We're behind on The Walking Dead by three episodes. *****SPOILERS***** We saw the birth of Lori's baby, and her death. Can't say I was torn up about that. I didn't like her, and the way she treated Rick. I've never liked their son much, either, especially since he got Dale killed. I read a spoiler myself, something about Shane returning, although we haven't seen it yet, and I'm not even sure how that can happen. But I'm not all that worried about it, either. I suspect Shane, if he does come back, will contend that the baby is his and will fight Rick for her. Maybe, in Rick's shattered state, he'll just give in. Or maybe he'll pull himself together and say no. Guess we'll find out. I think it's on hiatus until February now.
That's it for now, need to get moving and do other things. Maybe next time, I'll get to Sweet Genius and Vampire Diaries (behind on that too) and American Horror Story (also behind) and The New Normal. One good thing, I'll be around a lot more.
Until next time, take care!

Sweet Genius, Vampire Diaries and more Hawaii 5-0
Think of the new show Sweet Genius as Chopped for desserts. The comparison was made in the promos, so it's not a farfetched idea. Of course there are differences, and that is what makes the show unique in its own way.
So, what's the first ingredient in a show such as this? A great host! They've certainly found that in celebrated cake designer Ron Ben Israel. I confess to being unaware of him before I saw the first commercial for Sweet Genius, but in my own defense, I haven't exactly been in the market for a wedding cake either.
He is, to put it simply, gorgeous! There's something about him that draws me, something in his eyes. I could not keep away from the show if I tried! He is very personable and had a commanding stage presence. I've watched two episodes now, and enjoyed them both.
The format is similar to Chopped, but there is no basket of mandatory ingredients, per se. You start with four chefs, who are intro'd as on Chopped, and Ron explains that there are three rounds: Frozen, Baked and Chocolate. The first round comes with a mandatory ingredient, and an inspiration which the chefs must work from. In the first episode, the inspiration was darkness. Other inspirations have been a pearl in an oyster, a Fabergé egg, and a cat. During each round, there will be other mandatory ingredients which will be presented to the chefs, which they must incorporate into their dishes. At the end of each round, Ron (who is the sole judge) tastes each dish and critiques. He decides which one does not measure up and he informs that chef that he or she is not a sweet genius, and they leave.
If it's not obvious by now (and I'm sure it is) I'm quite taken with the host. Er, I mean the show. No, I said it right the first time, it's the host. I do like the show, yes, but he makes it for me. I also watch Just Desserts on Wednesday nights, but I have to say that Ron is a better host than Gail is. I like her fine, but I don't think she has the strength or charisma that Ron possesses. I'm intrigued with his accent, but I haven't placed it yet. I just hope he talks more and more in coming episodes.
Okay, moving on.
*********Spoiler Alert***********
Vampire Diaries started its third season. Not surprising in a way, but somewhat in others. As you may remember, the last episode of season 2 was a veritable blood bath and free for all. So now, we have Elena and Jeremy with no living relatives. The writers smoothed over that dilemma quickly by moving the plot up to Elena's 18th birthday (so far the issue of Jeremy as minor has not arisen, but more on that). Alaric is camping out with them, or something. He's sleeping on the couch because he can't bear to sleep in either the dead parents' room or his dead gf's room. I don't know if he's supposed to be a surrogate parental authority but by the second episode, he's out of there and ready to throw in the spiritual towel. Quitter!
As you'll also recall, at the end of episode 2, Damon was bitten by a were, and that is pretty fatal for a vamp. It looks like curtains for Damon (except we know better, seriously the show would fold immediately should they ever lose Damon Salvatore), but Elena doesn't realize this, so she gives him a last good-bye kiss. Surprise, he lives! And now he's tasted her sweet flesh, he wants more, and he intends to fight for it. While Elena, although pining for Stefan (the martyr sacrificed himself yet again, such a good boy) she is drawn to Damon, which is obvious. As I said, Stefan's doing the martyr thing, having agreed to go with Klaus in exchange for saving Damon's life. So now they're on a rampage in Tennessee and Stefan is killing with abandon. Damon and Alaric are tracking him through news clippings, but Elena finds out, and she still believes in him. A road trip to Tennessee with Damon leads him to believe the same, after a face to face with his brother. So I predict another road trip in the future, maybe some hot Damon/Elena action (any coincidence that they are allegedly dating in real life? Could be publicity driven, who knows. Ian can do better, I think, he's gorgeous, she's just okay).
So, what about the rest of the cast? Do they still exist. They do (except for Bonnie who really hasn't been seen yet). Jeremy (who died and was resurrected by Bonnie) is seeing things he shouldn't be seeing - namely his dead girlfriends. He's creeped out, and he's creeping out Matt as well. Caroline and Tyler did the horizontal mambo, and the next morning Tyler's mom caught Caroline - literally - with darts in her back. One vamp down! She tested Tyler with vervain but it didn't affect him cause he's a werewolf. She called in someone named Bill, who's being played by the guy who played Noah Bennett on Heroes, and they have Caroline locked up. Tyler puts two and two together, and on the night of the full moon, he forces his mother to witness his transformation. Howdya like them apples, Mrs. Lockwood? And in the kicker, we learn that Bill.... duh duh duh...... is Caroline's daddy. Interesting twist. We'll see how this plays out. We need to get Bonnie back in the plot, and I believe Elijah is unaccounted for. With Jeremy seeing dead people, who knows what past cast members might be resurrected? And of course there is Katherine. I don't remember what happened to her at the end of season 2, that's how little I like her.
Chopped Champions has its grand finale tonight, more about that later. Just Desserts is interesting, but I can't say it's the best Top Chef I've seen. I'm interested in seeing Top Chef Texas when it starts, and also the Next Iron Chef. I notice Sarah recorded The Chew, so I'm sure I'll be seeing that too - Carla (think Top Chef and hooty hoo and you'll remember her) and Mario Batale are the only names I recognized in their line up. But those are two good names.
*****more spoilers*****
I watched the second Hawaii 5-0 today. I love this show so much! Especially, but not entirely for Alex O'Loughlin. But primarily.
The new governor - former lieutenant governor - reinstated 5-0 after evidence came to light that McGarrett did not shoot the governor, although it was not conclusive enough to pin it on Wo Fat either. But the governor made it clear that things have changed, and that Hawaii 5-0 will have accountability. Today he proved he meant it by assigning a new member to the team, a former Homeland Security agent. Steve isn't thrilled and tries to keep her at a distance. But she grows on him. Which might be a good thing, since Kono's review before IA doesn't go well, and she's stripped of everything. I'm sure in future episodes we'll see more of the late governor/Wo Fat/McGarrett's dad connection. The greatest thing about the second episode is a scene in which Steve, Danno and the new girl are riding horses into a cult compound, and the boys start their typical bickering and she turns to them and asks "HOW LONG YOU BEEN MARRIED" Best line ever. Again.
Okay, next new show. Person of Interest. Thursday nights, CBS. Michael Emerson and Jim Caviezel lead the cast. I would never have discovered this show had it not been for Hawaii 5-0, cause that's the only time I'm on CBS, and it was just a fluke that I saw the promo. But something about it intrigued me, so I decided to give it a chance, and I'm glad I did.
At the beginning, Reese (Jim C) looks like a homeless person when he's attacked by young thugs on the subway. They picked the wrong person and he smacks them down handily, drawing the attention of the police. One female cop in particular is a recurring character, and she seems to be onto Reese. Finch (Michael E) is a billionaire with a lot of time and money on his hands. They have one thing in common - people think they're both dead. In a nutshell, Finch recruits Reese to his cause. He has a computer which was programmed to look for areas of trouble after 9-11. Every night it produces a list of non-essential data which it dumps, but these are actually people. So Finch retrieves them, one at a time. All he has is a social security number, but no knowledge of what will happen. Is this the victim, or the perp? Or the catalyst? Reese's job is to watch and prevent something from happening.
I really enjoyed the first show. It seems to be well written, fast paced, and definitely interesting, despite having commercials (we watched it live, normally I record everything). It's also from JJ Abrams, who brought us the Star Trek movies, plus some TV shows I'm not really familiar with, so we'll see how this goes. But I'll definitely be watching it again. It comes on right before Sweet Genius, so I have two hours of TV on Thursday nights to look forward to, and two hours of crocheting.
I think that's it for now. I can't imagine what I've really forgotten. Whatever it is, I'll pick it up later.
Until next time, take care!
