KISSING KIN

by Karen Hulene Bartell

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Paranormal Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Maeve Jackson is starting over after a broken engagement—and mustering out of the Army. No job and no prospects, she spins out on black ice and totals her car.

When struggling vintner Luke Kaylor stops to help, they discover they’re distantly related. On a shoestring budget to convert his vineyard into a winery, he makes her a deal: prune grapevines in exchange for room and board.

But forgotten diaries and a haunted cabin kickstart a five-generational mystery with ancestors that have bones to pick. As carnal urges propel them into each other’s arms, they wonder: Is their attraction physical…or metaphysical?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“Mind if I camp out ’til the roads clear?”
“Under the circumstances?” The clerk shook his head. “Not a problem.”
“Thanks.” He started toward the sitting room and nearly bumped into Maeve, leaning against the wall. “Sorry, didn’t mean to wake you.”
“You didn’t.” She tossed her chin. “I was cat-napping.”
“Right.” He compared her guarded veneer to her sleeping-beauty persona. Which is closer to her true self?
“Couldn’t help overhearing.” Gesturing toward the clerk with her chin, she grimaced. “I’m responsible for you being out tonight--”
“No.” He shook his head. “This is just a freak storm.”
“You don’t have to sleep in a chair.” She took a deep breath and gave a quick, tight-lipped smile. “My room has two queen beds, and you’re welcome to one of ’em.”
Unsure of the extent of her invitation, he did a double take.
“Just so we understand each other, this is a bunk, a place to sack out. Period. Amen.” She spoke in a low-pitched, no-nonsense voice. “Nothing more, so don’t get any--”
“Got it.” He covered his disappointment with a laugh. “Thanks, I appreciate the offer, but I’ll be fine dozing by the fire.”
“Hey, I’ve bivouacked with soldiers in Afghanistan. We do what’s necessary under extenuating circumstances.” Shrugging, she glanced at the door. “And this blizzard qualifies.” Her face relaxed into a smile.
Her offer tempting, he compared sitting up all night to stretching out in a bed. Then he glimpsed the clerk.
“If you’re worried about my reputation, don’t be.” She laughed, the sound like sleigh bells tinkling on a crisp, wintry night.
What is it about her that conjures thoughts of other times--other eras?
How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?
Paranormal creatures and cryptids fascinate me. Each legend or local myth is so unique to its geographical area that the stories seem to write themselves. Perhaps my writing is different because of how intensely these supernatural characters seize my imagination.
What is your favorite meal?
I’m a foodie, so asking me what’s my favorite meal is a tricky question. However, if a menu is combined with a holiday--for instance, Thanksgiving--that fusion transcends mere ingredients to edible (and cherished) memories. With that synthesis in mind, I’d say my favorite meal consists of smoked turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, a medley of root veggies, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie with whipped cream.
Where did you get the idea for Kissing Kin?
The idea for Kissing Kin first came to me during 2020 because of the striking similarities between Covid and the Spanish Flu of 1918, but publishers convinced me no one wanted to read about pandemics. Time passed.
Then I noticed a handmade cookbook my grandmother had constructed during the depression. It’s made of two cardboard flaps reinforced at the edges with duct tape and held together by two metal ring binders. That book inspired me. (I used some of its recipes in Kissing Kin, for instance, Simple Sponge Cake, Mother’s Soft Gingerbread, and…the treatment of chicken lice with nicotine-sulfate.)
The general tone of the cookbook, which was meant as a Christmas present during the 1930s, was chatty. It read more like a diary than a book of recipes, and it motivated me to begin writing Kissing Kin.
Say your publisher has offered to fly you anywhere in the world to do research on an upcoming book, where would you most likely want to go?
If my published offered to fly me anywhere in the world to do research, I would choose Ireland. Why? For a decade, I’ve had an idea for a book set in Ireland, but I haven’t had to opportunity to fly there. I’m a writer that has to research in person. Because the web and libraries only take me so far, I need to walk the streets to “own” the locale. I need to talk to the residents about their experiences--usually paranormal. I need to eat the local fare, breathe the fresh or stale or smoggy air, and drink the water before I can create a story.
Why Ireland? I’ve visited England, Scotland, and Wales, but somehow missed the emerald isle. For a decade, I’ve had an idea for a book about Saint Brigid of Kildare or Brigid, the original goddess of the Tuatha dé Danann, but I’ve yet to make the journey to Ireland or author the book.
Describe your writing space.
One of the ginger twins is spread out on my Queen Anne desk, shedding cat hair over the keyboard as I type. That’s okay. He’s my “mews,” one of four, actually, who inspires my imagination.
A quarter of a century ago, I sanded and stained my wooden Queen Anne desk--although, over the years, the cats have scratched its surface to shreds. On top of the desk is my reading list, a stone coaster from my husband, engraved with “I will always love you,” and a myriad of yellow notes to self.
A water bottle sits at my left, and a coffee cup sits at my right.
Armed with my “mews,” surrounded by reminders of love, and bolstered with caffeine, I’m ready to write!
I Dream of Demigods
(The Law of Love Book 1)
by Alexa Sullivan
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Paranormal Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Ro Baird can't cast a spell without setting her own pants on fire—until she kisses her hot new boss, Alex. Suddenly, she's able to access her magic…sort of…and she now has a familiar, who may be more trouble than she is helpful.
Alex Kouris happens to be a soul-stealing demigod of the Underworld. He claims he's trying to leave the life, but can she really trust a man whose magical talents are manipulation and charm? When Alex enlists a shady ex to help him, Ro must risk her heart and her life to save him and humanity from Hades’s evil scheme.
Can she harness her true power to set Alex and herself free?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

I kicked off my Monday by setting my pants on fire.

Again.

Honestly, I don’t know what I was thinking when I tried the spell. I’d just gotten to work, and instead of doing what I was paid to do—work—I stood at my window, staring down at the brick-and-steel towers of various offices stacked like dominoes along the tidy grid of downtown Portland’s streets.

Warm September sun glinted off windows and shone across the small city park a block from the Ainsley Barfield office.

I stood there daydreaming for several minutes before stuffing my long, wavy, brown hair into a messy bun. Reluctantly, I sat and tugged at the fraying cuff of my thin cardigan before logging in.

Maybe my lack of coffee led to my poor judgment. After all, I’d only had a few sips  when I searched the website for the National Association of Witches, NAW for short, and located a basic email organization spell. That really was the title. Basic Email Organization Spell.

I opened the PDF, mouthed the words a few times, and frowned at the diagrams before moving my right hand across my computer screen three times.

As I uttered the last line of the spell, heat seared my right leg. I gasped and shoved my chair back. A neon-blue flame danced on my shin, licking at the black rayon fabric of my pants—the ones I’d bought on sale only yesterday.

I yanked open the bottom drawer of my desk. Grabbing my spray bottle of holy water, I squirted my leg three times.

With a small hiss and a puff of noxious smoke, the flame winked out.

Love Potion #999

by C.S. Edwards

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Paranormal Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Did you hear what happened when a witch doctor met a witchologist in a bar? Well, mayhem ensued! What else did you expect? It's all because everyone had too many Gnome Island Iced Teas, not to mention the cloud of intoxicating glitter that put everyone under the table even if they didn't drink a drop. But the real punch line in that fateful tale were the two potion-filled arrow toting cupids. For one witch, after that night, stuff got real.

You see, the witch doctor was none other than the famous apothecary and alchemist, Betsy Babington. She's a celebrity! Famous, successful, single, and... bored. Before she walked into that bar, Betsy was itching to change things up. So, she enlisted her coven of misfits and two mischievous cherubs to make a rogue love potion recipe — destined to be the next big thing in her famous potions brand. She never once thought about making Love Potion#999 for herself! Definitely not! Well, maybe she did, just a little...

For the whole truth, you'll have to read the story. All I can really say is some magical historians have said Betsy Babington's tangle with the trouble of Love Potion #999 was like opening Pandora's box. Now that was a little extreme. For the folks who were there, it was more like a weekend in Vegas.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“It definitely makes a statement. Doesn’t it? The silver color is so regal,” Jessica said.
“Beautiful.” Lola drew the word out in a muddy Central European accent.
“Agreed. I’m super pleased with this one. I think it’s going to do really well.” Betsy sighed.
“That was not convincing at all. What’s up, Betsy? Do you not like the vials? They are the finest crystal we could get.” Ron held a sample size vial up in the air. The sun, streaming in from the bank of floor to ceiling windows in the apartment, hit the silver potion, making it dance like liquid glitter.
“Of course, I do. I think this potion is great. It’s just… well, I wish we could do something really different. Something super cool and interesting. A potion for the ages. You know. One that would change everything.” Betsy raised an eyebrow.
“Like what?” The coven responded in unison.
Betsy paused for a split second before she slid the tattered loose-leaf paper out of her pocket. “Like this.”
The coven stared at the wrinkly, yellow sheet. Its scripted writing danced across the page, captivating them all. No one spoke. No one looked away.
“It’s a love potion. We’re going to make the magical world’s first love potion in 200 years,” Betsy said.
The Questions – please choose at least 5
2) Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?
Musicals! Who doesn’t love them? Well, I do, and for my life, I’m choosing the magnificent -- Movin’ Out – the rock show based on the best music ever by Billy Joel. Seeing this show was my own virtual walk though some of the best songs ever written. I loved every minute and sang along – I’m sure the folks seated near me were not pleased! Music is one of my biggest inspirations in writing, so I can’t help but think a musical about music is just fitting for my life. Of course, my character would be the Piano Man, who orchestrates the entire story – because I’m not only an author, but I’m a bit of a control freak and like to be in charge. It’s perfect all the way around.
3) Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scene using them: hammer, saucer, traffic lights
Cindy watched Corey Kyle Soto toss his rainbow-colored sledding saucer against the traffic light pole, and dust off his jeans. She pushed her hair behind one ear and leaned into the pole. Puffing a long string of frosty air between her parted lips like cigarette smoke, she sighed, hoping he’d look her way. He was by far the hottest boy in 9th grade. Cindy was not that hot. But maybe he wouldn’t notice. Corey grabbed the saucer and said, “you wanna take a turn with me?” Her heart thumped like a hammer. She nodded and said, “sure.”
4) What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?
Romance is like art – all in the eye of the beholder. Some of the most romantic times with my husband have been simple pleasures like a walk in a park holding hands, or a lazy afternoon drive just to get out of the house. When you can spend time doing nothing and laugh, talk, and even just enjoy the silence, you’ve found your better half. There is one special thing we do each summer – we get re-married – not formally, but usually by a friend who has specifically gotten ordained (usually online) just for the occasion. We don’t stick strictly to the date we were married, but pick a weekend that suits everyone’s’ schedules. We don’t go anywhere fancy – it’s been in our backyard, on our porch, etc. It’s sweet, simple and sometimes hilarious – and the most romantic thing my husband could ever do in my eyes.
5) When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
Character – always. I’m not much of a plotter. I do have an idea of how I want my stories to go, but that changes as they unfold. That’s not to say I don’t know the ending of the stories. I always know the ending. It’s just the middle that is fuzzy. For me, not having a very defined path for a story leaves a lot more room to develop the characters – or really for the characters to develop themselves. Sometimes I’m just as surprised by what a character does or says as anyone else. That makes writing the meat of a book really exciting.
6) If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?
I think my movie would be a dramady – with a lot more laughs than drama! So, I’d have to say Sandra Bullock. She’s the perfect combination of serious, sassy, smart, and sweet that I would want to be portrayed as the movie me. LOL. Plus, she has the whole clumsy thing down – we all saw her in Miss Congeniality – and that fits me perfectly. She’s not afraid to snort-laugh, eat pizza in her sweats, and dance like she doesn’t care who’s around. All things that would be musts when being C.S. Edwards.
9) Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive yet.
Wow. This is a BIG question. Honestly, I would hope that our world is ready to receive any idea. I’m a dreamer that way. I’d prefer to think there are ideas so amazing they just haven’t been conceived yet. But when they are, we’ll all gather them in with open arms and minds. If you can’t tell, I’m more of a glass ½ full gal, which lends itself toward the truth that we can handle anything – ideas and stories might provoke healthy debates or disagreements, but we should always be ready to listen. Otherwise, we stop learning. My husband would tell you I’m not ready to tell you the tale about The Drawbridge – but one day I will.
GENRE: Contemporary LGBTQ Erotic Paranormal Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

His lover died and Gage knows he's got to move on but what if there's a chance Rascal can come back?

Gage knows Rascal is dying. The gay cancer has taken over his life and is killing him more each day. Gage knows his love can’t save Rascal, but what if there is a chance to change the future?

Rascal isn’t done loving Gage. He’s not ready to die. If he’s willing to accept the magic from Darryl at Start Me Up, he can come back.

He’s going to return to his love and life, no matter the cost. Now if only Gage will accept him…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“Okay?” Gage asked. “So? Do I take it to the apartment? What do I do with it? Is it a sex doll or something?”
I’m not an it. I’m still me. Rascal wanted to cry. The faraway look in Gage’s eyes cut him to his marrow. He’d made this man sad. He’d hurt him by dying. Damn.
“Oh, honey, you touch him to bring him to life. Once you enact the magic that way, you can talk to him and do whatever you want. He’ll be in there,” Darryl said. “He is in there.”
“You’re serious?” Gage turned his attention to Rascal. “It doesn’t look like him. This has the same eyes and hair, but not the tattoos.”
“It won’t for now. You have to establish the connection to him. Once you do, and talk to him, he’ll take on the characteristics of Rascal. He’ll look like himself again,” Darryl said. “Think of this as a pristine version of Rascal, ready to be brought to life and marked by time, just like the other. Create new marks and scars and memories this time around.”
Please touch me. I want the good, the bad, the joy and tears… I want you. He couldn't say any of those things out loud to the man he loved.
“A touch?” Gage crooked his eyebrow. “And he’ll come to life if I do? Really?”
“Really.” Darryl nodded. “Try it.”
Gage shrank back. “No. I don’t believe this. The magic isn’t real. Magic is sleight of hand and all that jive.”
Gage. Rascal wasn’t sure how to reach his lover.
“Did you see Eric, Randall and Steve? They’re products of this magic,” Darryl said. “Ask them.”
Bite Me for Christmas
by Megan Slayer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Contemporary Erotic Paranormal Romance (Holiday)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
He came to her in a dream, but he’s more like a nightmare in tight jeans, and she wants a taste.
Rachael isn’t good at magic, and she’s not versed in life, but this witch wants to lay her hands on the sexy vampire who’s come to her in her dreams. Can she have her Christmas wish -- the vampire?
Gavin wants the witch, but he doesn’t believe he’s worthy of her. Part of him wants to devour her magic and save himself, but what if being saved doesn’t involve dying?
Anything is possible with a little Christmas magic.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Rachael admired the twinkle lights she’d strung around the kitchen. Somewhere people were enjoying themselves. They might even be making love under the Christmas tree. She’d like to try that -- sex in front of the tree.

Instead, she’d pulled the chore of kitchen clean-up. She always pulled that chore and the rest, too.

She draped the washcloth over the faucet and surveyed the room. Everything appeared to be back in place.

When she peeked into the living room, Serena and Millie were deep in another round of cards. The last Rachael knew, they were playing hearts. Rachael tiptoed out to the back porch to admire the snow. The cauldron bubbled with some batch of potions. She had no idea what her sisters made, only that she had to clean out the pot when they finished. The tangy smell filled the enclosed space and made her dizzy.

She crinkled her nose. If she knew how, she’d change the scent to something nutmeg-y or pine -- anything but the overwhelming aroma.

Something flashed among the white snow. She folded her arms and stepped up to the screened-in windows. Maybe the flash was the play of firelight on the snow.

The snow glittered and mesmerized her as it fell -- that had to be it. The flash was falling snow.

She hummed the tune of a Christmas carol and fought back tears. Christmas shouldn’t be this depressing, but she couldn’t help herself. She tried to make the day bright, but Christmas Eve would forever be the day her parents died and her world turned upside down. The loss turned her sisters bitter, too. The official account said nothing about her being at fault, but her sisters swore she’d created the fog, which caused the collision.

She wished she knew the truth.

One day, she wanted to know, but she also wanted to replace the sad memories with good ones. She’d never forget her parents, but she needed to move forward with her life.

Someday.

The flash returned, but this time, a man appeared among the snow.

Her blood sizzled, and she gasped. She knew this man.

Her vampire.

“Gavin,” she whispered. “You’re here.”

“You did ask for me for Christmas.” He moved across the snow and stood in the doorway to the porch. “Said you wanted a vampire for Christmas.”

She longed to touch him, but feared she’d draw her sisters’ attention.

“You did request me, didn’t you?”
