Guest Blogger Michael Rupured

Happy Monday one and all! I have recently become acquainted with Dreamspinner author Michael Rupured, who has just released Until Thanksgiving with them. I find Michael to be a very delightful and charming fellow (and he's single guys, how awesome is that? Too bad for me I don't fill the requirements, or I'd be on this!). I talked Michael into answering my infamous Rick Reed questions, so that's what we'll do first. And then he'll tell us about his book (which I own and look forward to reading!) Michael, please start, while I get us something to get our hearts started, okay? Hope you like lattes!

Edit: I'm doing triple duty today! Besides enjoying Michael's company here, I've got Lucifer with me at my friend Nephy's blog, talking about Revelations, and I'm at the IRM blog, talking about chocolate, and The Belgian Chocolate Remedy (and having a contest!)

Thanks, Julie, for inviting me to talk about my first novel, Until Thanksgiving, now available from Dreamspinner Press. I’ve included an excerpt and the blurb, below, but first, let me answer the questions you sent.
1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?

That’s easy. The person would be William Levy, who I’d never heard of until his run on Dancing With the Stars. Now I can’t stop thinking about him. The item would be Toodles, my six-pound long-haired chihuahua. She completes me.

   2)   Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?

Okay, that’s a bit harder. I’d have to say Maria, in West Side Story, because I always feel pretty and charming and gay.

   3)   Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scenario using them:  combination, broadcast, closer

He rolled the tumbler, leaning in closer, listening for the click that would broadcast he’d finally reached the last number of the combination. And I have 77 words left.

4)      You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why?

Tarzan. In my mind’s eye he looks like Ron Ely—the actor who played him on the television show back in the sixties. I didn’t know I was gay at the time, but the image of him in that little loincloth has been seared in my memory for all these years. I think maybe he was the first guy I ever lusted after. I’d do Michael DeLuca in Until Thanksgiving, too. I imagined him as a guy with all the bells and whistles that float my boat.

   5)    What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?

Well, at the moment, I find myself between my fourth and fifth husband, a man I haven’t yet met. At least, not as far as I know. If any of your readers think they know him or that they might even be him, my contact info is below. Act fast—I’ve never been single for more than a year, and it’s already been three months.

6)      When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?

Hmmmm. You ask some really tough questions! I can start out with either, but usually have a vague idea about both. Neither is very well defined until I get a page or so into the outline. They kind of grow together. And yes, now I outline. I haven’t always—Until Thanksgiving came together one chapter at a time. Adding a bullet point or some detail to an outline is a lot easier than revising a finished chapter.

7)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?

I’ve always said any movie about my life must be a musical. Nothing else makes sense. By the time I could talk, I’d watched so many musicals that I felt cheated when I went out and nobody burst into song. So with that in mind, the best person to play me in a movie about my life would be Adam Lambert.

8)      Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?

What does it say about me that this was the hardest question to answer? After I drew a blank, I Googled “best horror villains” then looked over half a dozen different lists and still came up empty handed. I skipped the question and came back to it with the same result. I’m going with Dracula, the grandfather of the horror genre.

9)      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?

Cary Grant is the hottest man that ever lived.

   10) Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?

I might have thought so, once upon a time. Now I know better. Sure, there are lots of people out there who aren’t ready for m/m romance or paranormal fantasies. But the world, for the most part, embraces a good story, even if everyone isn’t ready for it—and judging from some of what’s popular, it doesn’t even have to be that good.

Blurb:

Josh Freeman knows his best days are behind him. After his partner of seventeen years has an affair with a younger man, Josh buries himself in takeout boxes, half-smoked joints, and self-pity until his best friend gently kicks him in the ass and encourages him to try out a new job in Washington DC—at least until Thanksgiving.

Though DC has its share of troubles, specifically in the form of a murderer targeting gay men, Josh soon discovers its charms as well. Unlike his old home, DC is crawling with men who want to date him—apparently he's not as overweight, out of shape, or over the hill as the man he once loved made him believe. In particular, Josh would love a chance with relocation expert Thad Parker, but Josh is sure Thad is seeing someone, so he looks for love elsewhere. He tells himself he and Thad don't have anything in common anyway.

Then Josh learns Thad really is available. Maybe they can work it out after all. Suddenly the future seems bright again. Of course, Josh doesn't know he's the murderer's next target....

Excerpt:

Josh Freeman left the Bar Complex well before last call. Except for the hustlers that prowled the streets behind Lexington’s one and only gay bar, nobody noticed him leaving. A rough-looking kid in a tank top and jeans sized him up and walked toward him.
“Looking for some company?”
“No, thanks.” Josh kept walking. The gravel crunching under his Justin Ropers didn’t cover the laughter the boy got from the other hustlers. Josh wasn’t hard up enough to pay for sex. Yet. The cold shoulders at the bar had been bad enough.
He unlocked his red Toyota Celica. Gay life in Lexington, Kentucky, had changed. The bar crowd that evening was nothing like the good old days, when the place overflowed with good-looking, readily available men—before AIDS and the siren call of gay meccas like Atlanta, San Francisco, and New York. That school was out for the summer didn’t help. The class of ’97 had moved on, and the class of 2001 hadn’t yet come to town.
Going to the Bar had been a mistake. Josh hadn’t talked to anyone and nobody had talked to him. He wasn’t surprised. Unless he needed help crossing the street or had fallen and couldn’t get up, the college boys shaking their stuff on the dance floor had no cause to talk to him.
He started the car and headed to Jerry’s Restaurant for a late-night snack, smoking the rest of the joint he’d left in the ashtray. Smoking pot kept him from feeling so lonely. These days, he smoked so much he didn’t really feel anything.
“Table for one?” asked the waitress, chomping her gum and tugging on a severely strained bra strap.
“Table for one” sounded like a life sentence. Absent enough money to justify the sugar daddy label, he had slim to no chance of finding another lover.
“Here ya go, darlin’.” The waitress plunked down a food-stained menu and a glass of water. “Can I get ya some coffee or something to drink?”
“Water is fine, thanks.”
“Ready to order or do ya need a few minutes?”
“I can order. I’d like a J-Boy plate.”
“Sure. I’ll be right back out with that for ya, darlin’.”
A tiny spark of hope still glimmered, enough to get Josh off the couch earlier that evening and into the shower. By ten o’clock, he’d whipped his hair into a look, fingered through some gel, squeezed into his best jeans, and donned a Polo golf shirt for a solo night out on the town.
The waitress returned with his food, interrupting his thoughts. She set the burger, coleslaw, and mountain of crinkle-cut fries down in front of him. “Ya gonna save some room for hot fudge cake?”
Josh was tempted to say yes. He could eat whatever he wanted now. What difference would it make if he got big as a house?
“No, thanks. I’ll be doing good to eat this.”
“Well, just let me know if ya change your mind.” She left the check on the table and headed to the hostess stand to seat a group of punk rockers that had just arrived.
Josh glanced at his watch and noticed it was after one o’clock. The bars had closed, and a line waiting for tables had formed just inside the door. He wolfed down the rest of the burger, finished off the slaw, and made a noticeable dent in the mountain of fries. After leaving two bucks on the table for the waitress, he picked up the check, settled with the cashier, and returned to his car.
The J-Boy plate had filled him up, but left him feeling just as empty as before. Instead of going home where he belonged, Josh headed for the bookstore.
He parked under the trees at the very back of the parking lot, smoking a cigarette and watching guys coming and going through the bookstore’s rear entrance. A steady stream of cars cruised slowly through the parking lot. Now and then the cars paired up, driver’s side to driver’s side, for quick conversations. If the drivers connected, a two-car convoy headed to a secret rendezvous for a hookup. More often, both cars returned to the parade circling the bookstore in search of a hot encounter.
After seventeen years with Ben Dixon, Josh was single. It wasn’t his fault. He’d done everything right. The idea of cheating never even occurred to him. As far as Josh was concerned, once you decided to move in together, death was the only way out.
He thought Ben agreed. In a way, he did. Ben didn’t want the relationship to end, either. Not the relationship with Josh or the relationship Ben had on the side with his coworker, twenty-five-year-old David Hicks. That Josh considered David to be a good friend added insult to injury. In one fell swoop, he’d lost two of the most important people in his life.
Oh well, Ben is history. No more lies. No more worrying about what’s going on behind my back.
But the absence of gnawing paranoia was a small comfort in the face of reality. Josh knew his best chance for finding the love of his life was now behind him. Downhill was the only direction left for a single, middle-aged gay man.
He locked his car and made for the rear door of the bookstore. When he crossed the threshold, the scent of Pine-Sol punched him in the nose. There wasn’t enough cleanser in the world to cover the smell of all the sex that went on in the cubicles making up the dim back half of the store. The brightly lit front of the establishment featured dirty magazines, an eclectic collection of pornographic videos for sale or rent, and a wall of dongs, dildos, and other sex-related paraphernalia.
A dozen small cubicles with coin-operated video players featured an assortment of porn. Scattered throughout the dark maze connecting all the cubicles lurked maybe a dozen horned-up men. Some were married and popped into the booths for the blowjobs their wives refused to deliver. Most of the rest were there to oblige. The way they leered made Josh uncomfortable.
Never a lurker, Josh stepped into a cubicle and dropped some quarters in the slot to watch some gay porn. On the screen, an obviously bored African-American plowed the ass of a homely white dude who tried to act like it hurt. Neither performer was likely to win any acting awards. Josh pushed the button and the scene changed to a blond frat-boy type blowing a hairy, muscular white guy.
Fearing what he might sit in, Josh ignored the wooden bench seat and remained standing. The black plywood walls of the booth were riddled with holes of various sizes, none part of the original construction. Smaller holes allowed for spying on the action in the neighboring cubicle. Larger openings served more illicit purposes. Every few years, the police raided the place and the owner would board up all the holes. New holes reappeared in days.
Watching the action on the little screen gave Josh a hard-on. When a finger appeared through a baseball-sized opening on the right side of the booth, beckoning, he figured what the heck. Getting off was getting off. He went over, lowered his pants to his knees, and stuck his cock through the hole into the warm, wet mouth waiting on the other side.
Josh concentrated on the video, imagining the frat boy sucking his dick instead of one of the leering men he’d seen outside the cubicle. He dropped more quarters in the slot, then focused on the video and the mouth milking him through the glory hole. Soon Josh was pounding the wall with his hips. The sound attracted bystanders to the holes in surrounding cubicles to see what the noise was all about.
Josh felt the beginning of his climax tingling in his balls and groaned. The hot mouth working urgently on his throbbing cock quickly produced the desired result. On still trembling legs, Josh zipped up his pants and headed home to his empty bed.

Thank you so much for being here, Michael!  Please come again!

Until next time, take care!

Six Sentence Sunday and Guest Blogging with M.A. Church

Good morning and Happy Sunday! As you may or may not know, Six Sentence Sunday is scheduled to end this month. Perhaps someone else will resurrect it, but I do not know. So I'm going to try to participate as much as I can. Also, after my six sentences, something that is actually related, so don't forget to keep reading. For more Six Sentence goodness, go here.

Today's six sentences come from Revelations, which is being released by Museit Up Publishing in February. Poor Judas is - if you'll forgive the expression - being bedeviled by Lucifer. Enjoy! This excerpt is not PG, btw.

Until I hear a throaty voice whispering directly into my ear, a warm arm wrapping itself securely about my waist.
“Judas, you pretty thing, when will you allow me to fuck your delectable body and show you what true ecstasy is?”
Ladies and gentlemen—the devil does not wear Prada. He prefers Armani, if the truth be told. And here he is behind me now, pressed up against me with a raging erection—not that I haven’t felt that before, many times—and he’s whispering sweet nothings in my ear.
And it’s taking all my self-control not to elbow him in his gut.

Today, I'm guest blogging with M.A. Church, and we have the second part of the interview with Judas and Jesus. So head on over and see what the boys have to say. M.A. made hot chocolate. See you there!

Until next time, take care!

Feature & Follow Friday

Another week gone, are you saying TGIF? The days have just flown by, I swear! Happy Friday to one and all and welcome to another Feature & Follow Friday. Before we get to today's question, I'm guest blogging with Lily Sawyer today, and there's a contest, so go here and check it out!

Q: What New Years Blogging or Writing resolution have you placed on yourself?

Let's take each questions separately, shall we?

Blogging: I'd like to gain more followers and blog as often as I can on my own blog, plus have  more guest bloggers and be a guest on more blog.

Writing: I  hope to finish the Moonlit Skies series with M.A. Church this year, and start another one. I hope to finish some of the sequels I've started - for Max, Leonardo, Dark Love, among others - and finish and sub some of the flash fiction I've started: Trapped in Time, Sonny and Tim, Scent of a Wolf, Lust Never Sleeps, etc.  My fervent desire is to become self-sufficient as a writer this year without having to work outside the home (unless I choose to). And to attend GRL in Atlanta in October.

Guest Blogger Kathryn Meyer Griffith

I'm doing double duty today. I'm hosting author Kathryn Meyer Griffith here, who's going to talk to us about her 17th published novel, Human No Longer, and I'm over at Michael Mandrake's blog too, talking about The Belgian Chocolate Remedy. So please come say hello after you're visited with Kathryn here, and look for a giveaway there!

Coffee, Kathryn? I know I could use some! Who couldn't, right? Why don't you get started while I pour some.

Human No Longer Backstory
By Kathryn Meyer Griffith
Human No Longer. It’s my 17th published book – yeah! – and my fourth vampire novel. First, let me tell you where I got the idea for it. About five years ago, I was still trying to please the agent who’d sold four of my earlier Zebra paperback novels (and who I no longer have) and, because she didn’t seem to like any of my new potential concepts, I asked her what she would like to see. Out of nowhere, she said, “You know your 1991 Zebra vampire novel, Vampire Blood? I liked that one a lot. The characters. Well, how about writing me a sort of sequel with basically the same characters, but with this premise: A woman, a mother, after being turned into a bloodthirsty vampire, must learn to adapt to the human world and still be a good mother. You know, how would she deal with everything when she had children she loved; didn’t want to hurt or leave them…but still had the need to feed on blood? Still had all the urges and desires of a vampire?
Yikes. I hated the idea but, to please her, I went ahead and begrudgingly wrote the book. I tentatively called it The Vampire’s Children or the Vampire Mother or something like that. I finished it. Not too happy with it. I had never liked writing what other people wanted me to write. Stubborn, I guess.
My agent, in the meantime, had begun her own online erotic (which I don’t much care for writing) publishing company and when I’d finally gotten done with the novel she was too busy to even read the finished book. She handed it off to an apprentice intern. An intern? What? Who didn’t like it at all. Duh. So, disgusted, I tucked the file away on my computer and, fed up with the whole agent thing, returned to writing what I wanted to write. An end of days novel called A Time of Demons and a new vampire novel where the evil vampire wasn’t a mother. In early 2010 I went with a new publisher, Kim Richards at Damnation Books/Eternal Press, and she contracted not only those two books but asked me if I’d like to rewrite, update and rerelease all 7 of my older out-of-print Leisure and Zebra paperbacks going back to 1984. Heck yes, I said! So for the next 3 years I was busy doing that. Some of those books were over twenty-five years old and very outdated. Their rewriting, editing and rereleasing took much work and time.
Then, in 2012, I decided to take a very old book of mine (Predator) which was contracted to Zebra Paperbacks in 1993 but, in the end, never actually released, and just for the heck of it, as my 16th novel, self-publish it to Amazon Kindle Direct. Just in ebook form. A kind of grand experiment. The first time I’ve ever tried self-publishing. See how it’d sell. Dinosaur Lake. A story about a hungry mutant dinosaur loose in the waters of Crater Lake that goes on a rampage. Hey, I wrote Dinosaur Lake before Jurassic Park, the book, ever came out! Really. I had my cover artist, Dawne Dominique make a cover for it…and it was stunning with a dinosaur roaring on the front. And I did everything else myself. Editing. Proofing. Formatting. With forty years and many publishers behind me I felt I was capable. And it’d been selling so well I decided to self-publish another one…and I remembered the mother/vampire book. Hmmm. So I revamped it (ha, ha, inside joke); polished it, and self-published it, as well. I retitled it Human No Longer. Got my fabulous cover artist, Dawne Dominique, to make me a lovely haunting cover with a troubled-looking woman standing outside a spooky house, with two children behind her in its shadows, on the front and voila! All in all, I don’t think the book turned out half bad. In fact, with the changes I made I think it’s not bad at all. Now I just hope my readers will like it.
So that’s the story of Human No Longer.***

About Kathryn Meyer Griffith...
Since childhood I’ve always been an artist and worked as a graphic designer in the corporate world and for newspapers for twenty-three years before I quit to write full time. I began writing novels at 21, over forty years ago now, and have had seventeen (ten romantic horror, two romantic SF horror, one romantic suspense, one romantic time travel, one historical romance and two murder mysteries) previous novels, two novellas and twelve short stories published from Zebra Books, Leisure Books, Avalon Books, The Wild Rose Press, Damnation Books/Eternal Press and Amazon Kindle Direct.
I’ve been married to Russell for almost thirty-five years; have a son, James, and two grandchildren, Joshua and Caitlyn, and I live in a small quaint town in Illinois called Columbia, which is right across the JB Bridge from St. Louis, Mo. We have three quirky cats, ghost cat Sasha, live cats Cleo and Sasha (Too), and the five of us live happily in an old house in the heart of town. Though I’ve been an artist, and a folk singer in my youth with my brother Jim, writing has always been my greatest passion, my butterfly stage, and I’ll probably write stories until the day I die…or until my memory goes.

Blurb of Human No Longer
…a vampire novel of approx. 90,000 words by Kathryn Meyer Griffith

Blurb of Human No Longer by Kathryn Meyer Griffith

Jenny and Jeff Sanders on a summer night become the victims of a bizarre crime, leaving Jeff dead and Jenny in a coma. Their attackers aren’t caught.
She returns to her children and her life. With Jeff’s death his business and their income are also gone. Jenny, a novelist, hasn’t written a book in years, so she must move back to her childhood home in Summer Haven, Florida, where years before she and Jeff destroyed a sadistic family of vampires.
At least her brother, Joey, who owns a local diner, is there to help them.
But Jenny has no appetite. She’s edgy. Her eyes hurt. Could be trauma from the attack, or grief. Until one night, after they’ve moved into the rundown family farmhouse, she can’t resist the night woods or drinking animals’ blood.
Gradually she accepts the truth. Her attackers were vampires. Now she’s becoming what she once hunted and fears she must either kill herself or run. She can’t abandon her children, but promises herself never to drink human blood; to find a way to live in the human world. It’s not easy. They settle into the farmhouse, which local gossip says is haunted, and renovate it. At night she hunts and hides what she’s becoming from everyone. She fights to be a good mother and not let the bloodlust overpower her. Gets a job and attempts to fit in.
People, bodies brutalized and emptied of blood, begin dying. Like years before. With her blackouts, she fears she may be their killer and confides in Joey. While a Detective, investigating her husband’s and his daughter’s murders, complicates things.
Jenny suspects it’s her attackers doing the killings. They’ve found her and demand she joins them–or her family will die. When she resists, they kidnap her children; to save them, she becomes part of their killing spree. Becoming a monster like them…until she finds a way to outwit and ultimately destroy them.
In the end it takes supernatural intervention, a ghost, and the help of a childhood friend to set her, and the world, free from the vampires once and for all. ***

EXCERPT of Human No Longer by Kathryn Meyer Griffith:
The moon had inched downwards in the sky as she turned and headed towards the farmhouse. It was time to return home to her children.
Awareness of the shadows stalking her, an encircling noose of entrapment, began once she entered the woods. She’d let her guard down again. So foolish of her.
Before she could run, the shadows were on her. A steely hand grabbed one arm, another clamped around the other. Her instincts warned she was in real danger. These were her kind but not like her. There was this stench of malevolence around them. Strong as smoke.
Don’t let them capture you. You must get away.
“Ah,” a voice spoke near her ear, “you are strong. Zebulon said you were. I didn’t believe him. It’s beyond me how you’ve come to be what you are. It’s extraordinarily rare you didn’t die and then became one of us. You’ll come with us. Now.”
“Who are you?” she demanded, not struggling to escape. Be smart. Wait for a chance. Think of Teddy and Sarah. You must protect them.
“I go by Dante. And you?”
She refused to answer. “Can’t you read my mind?”
He didn’t answer for a minute. Then he replied, “It doesn’t matter. All you need to know is you belong to us. We’ll decide what to do with you. Come along.”
“And if I don’t come along as you so nicely put it?”
“Then,” his laugh was somehow sinister, “we’ll have no further use for you. You’ll die here and now. I’m stronger than you. We’re all stronger than you.”
As afraid as she was, the words slipped out, “Did you kill my husband?”
“Your husband?” As if he didn’t know what she was talking about.
“Jeff Sanders. We were attacked in St. Louis beneath a bridge late one night the end of August. He died. I lived. Something, a cloud of shadows, swept in and out and left him dead.”
The vampire didn’t respond at first as if he were mulling it over.
“Well, did you?”
“Most likely. We dispatch so many of you. You’re our nourishment. We travel all over your world.” He snapped his fingers and the crack ricocheted around them. “You can’t expect me to recall every last pitiful one and where.”
The heartlessness in his voice made her instantly loathe him, as his grip tightened.
“How did you find me?”
“What you are called to us once your change was complete. It’s the way we knew you existed. Distance doesn’t matter.”
“Are you…am I…a vampire?”
“A vampire?”
“A vampire,” she hissed.
Another disgusted laugh. “Vampire? That’s what your kind think we are, except we’re so much more. We’re from another…place.”
His free hand waved in front of her face. “A vampire is a creature you humans made up. We’re not dead or undead, nor one of your devil’s disciples or any of those ridiculous things. One day we’ll rule this planet and all you cattle on it.
“I’ll give you a choice. You join us or not. It matters little to me either way. We just can’t have you out in the world running free. Alerting people to our existence before we’re ready for that to happen. It puts us in danger. If you’re not with us, you’re our enemy–and our enemies we do not allow to live.”
She didn’t want to join him. Them. She wanted to scratch his eyes out and break his neck. Jeff had been more than this monster’s nourishment; his death more than a consumed Happy Meal to her, to Teddy and Sarah. Damn if she was going with them!
The rage, fear and loss of the last month boiled over inside her and ignoring the words and warnings, she tore from their grasp and fled. Her body, lifting from the ground, moved faster than the wind through the night trees.
Behind her she heard their curses and pursuit.
She thought of the farmhouse, longing for the safety of its walls, and suddenly she was there in her kitchen. Her enemies left behind somewhere in the woods.
She got away this time. How? Could they track her? Find her? She didn’t know.
She held her breath, listening, for what felt like an eternity. Nothing. After a while she thought she might be safe. No one had followed her.
She consciously cloaked her thoughts, her very being, and shutting her eyes, leaned against the wall so she wouldn’t sink to the floor.***

Wednesday Briefs: Stan and Ollie #11

I hope everyone had a wonderful New Year's Eve! Here we are, it's 2013, and time for the first flash of the new year! This week's prompts were: "If I thought you would..." or use: pestilence, sigh, wrath or "He laid his hand upon my..." or use: train, cow, platitude or use a Pokemon or a pocket monster in your story or "When did you get to be so..."

This week, I return to my continuing story of Stan and Ollie, after a two week hiatus. Last seen, they were at Aunt Hettie's, soaking up the atmosphere and some food, now they're on to another source of information, aka the beauty parlor. After dinner, we returned to our hotel, picking up Miss Nasty along the way. Unfortunately, she had nothing to report, so we turned in for the night.  Our room at the Shadee Rest is surprisingly comfortable.  I need no alarm to wake me in the morning; I have Ollie for that, with his daily ritual. As I feel him stir, I rise on up one elbow, watching him, becoming aware of a lump at my feet. Frowning, I glare toward the end of the bed at the cat with the self-satisfied smirk.

“Get the hell off of there!” I snarl.

“Stan, be reasonable.” Ollie’s already at my side of the bed, bending over and caressing my lips with his.

“You didn’t want to get a second room and you couldn’t expect her to sleep in the carrier, surely?”

I guess it could have been worse; I try to put a good spin on it, for Ollie’s sake. At least she stayed in cat form.

However, I can’t resist getting the last word as Ollie heads into the bathroom. I eye her as I pull on my clothes. “If I thought you would cooperate, I’d do it in a heartbeat.” She pays me no heed, and licks at one paw before running it across her face in obvious disdain for my words.

“Bitch,” I mutter. But not too loudly.

We decide to take breakfast at the hotel restaurant. Does everything on the damn menu have to come with grits? I permit Xylina to join us (in human form, of course), a concession to my lover that pleases him greatly. When she isn’t looking, I dump my grits on her plate. Childish? Maybe. Satisfactory? Completely.

Our first stop of the day is the hair salon our waitress of the night before told us about. Miss Jane’s, over on Magnolia. When I suggest to her majesty that maybe she should come with us, she could use a touch-up on her roots, she takes her indignant ass somewhere else, saying she’s going to keep searching for Consuelo—which was my intent all along. I know, I’m a cheeky bastard. And I love it.

As I’d hoped, the beauty parlor is filled with a lot of the local women. It seems to be a gathering place for them, gossip being exchanged freely along with haircuts, manicures, and dye jobs. There’s a definite generation gap that makes itself manifest here, but also shows the range of the stylists—everything from bouffant beehives to sassy pageboys to whatever you call the newest trends. I just call them hot messes.

We check in with the receptionist who smiles at us in the professional way such ladies have, tells us to have a seat and someone shall be right with us. It doesn’t take long—thank heaven, as the only reading material available is of the purely sensational variety of the kind where the most titillating part of the story is on the cover and the rest is pure dribble—before we find ourselves sitting in adjacent chairs. Ollie’s stylist is young and trendy, her close-cropped hair laced with blue and purple highlights, while the woman who stands behind my chair is older, has dark hair with blonde roots. I’ve never understood why anyone born a natural blonde would want to cover that up, but apparently some of them do, while other people are more than happy to get the same result from a bottle. Go figure.

Luckily, Ollie doesn’t carry through with his threat to get highlights. I can’t help but eye his stylist with suspicion as she runs her finger through his curls and squeals. That’s the effect he has on women, and I knew it going in, but it doesn’t mean I want to see it.

Suddenly, as she rotates his chair so that he and I are eye to eye, he blows me a kiss, putting our relationship out there for everyone to see. Far from discouraging the girl, whose name is Mindi, she squeals excitedly, still fingering Ollie’s locks.

Score one for us, I guess.

First order of business is having our hair washed. I hadn’t really planned on doing that, but when I open my mouth to tell Myrtle so she’s already hustled me to the washing station, covered me with a sheet of plastic, laid my head backward and begun to hose me. I wisely keep my mouth shut at that point. It doesn’t take long, as I keep my hair cut fairly short, and I’m back in the chair followed, moments later, by my better half. His normally blond curls are dark and damp, yet he still manages to look sexy while exuding the aura of a wet pup.

At least I can hear better now.

“I saw you last night.” That’s Mindi, talking to Ollie as she eyes him critically and takes small clips of his hair. I know he’s only asked for a trim, but my heart’s in my throat in a reverse Sampson and Delilah as I watch him get shorn. “You were at Miss Hettie’s, weren’t you?”

“Yes ma’am, we were.” Ollie rewards her with a big smile. I can feel the heat of her excitement from here.
I’m about to comment on the food, perhaps to stir up further conversation, when the matter is introduced for me, without my intervention.

A woman in a nearby chair sniffs loudly. “Did you see him carrying on like…. Like someone half his age?”

“I know,” Myrtle comments. “And that hussy, no better than she should be. Little tramp.”

Her words are taken up and echoed, and I can see head bobbing in the mirror, as I survey the room behind me.

“What do you expect from Northern trash?” More nods of agreement.

“Damn Yankees…”

You’d think the Civil War was fought just yesterday.

“It’s a disgrace, that’s what it is.” The first woman again. “Especially in her condition.”

All heads swivel to the source of this shocking revelation.

What?

Looking ahead at 2013, American Horror Story and more

I spent last  night with Sarah, having a quiet New Year's Eve. We ate pizza and chicken wings from Little Caesar's (you can't beat a $5 pizza!), smoked Gouda, and crab dip that I made (the recipe is very easy. I took a brick of cream cheese and softened it, added garlic salt and pepper and spread it on a plate, then I took a bottle of cocktail sauce and mixed it with two cans of crab meat and spread it over the cream cheese and we ate it with crackers. Next time I might use chili sauce instead, since cocktail sauce has horseradish - yuck). We watched the Twilight Zone marathon on SyFy, which is still on, and I might watch more later. One of my favorite episodes is on at 6 CST (A Stop at Willoughby).

One thing I did not due was sit down and write a list of resolutions. Not because I have nothing planned for the New Year, because I do, but because I don't feel the need to make this list. Life is an ongoing project and sometimes you  need to adapt, not be locked into something you can't do.

I am going to continue to ride my bike every day (or almost every day) and keep losing weight.

I am going to continue to look for a more permanent job, hopefully one that utilizes my talents.

As for my writing, 2013 is starting out well. Revelations comes out in February, and Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night, my first real published horror story, in April, both with Museit Up Publishing. In May/June, Be My Alien will be released by Dreamspinner Press. Hopefully by then, the next book (or more) in the Moonlit Skies series will be finished, subbed and accepted. Hopefully they'll take When Will I See You Again as well, which I subbed on December 24th. That date makes it easy to remember when I sent it in. I'm currently reworking Leonardo di Caprio is a Vampire and plan to sub that to DSP as well.

For those who might be wondering, I have taken back all of my works from Silver Publishing, except for My Fair Vampire, which is not mine alone. I'm sure you're all aware of the trouble at Silver. The publisher is currently in breach of contract, and owes his authors a great deal of money. He has grossly mismanaged the company, spent money he should not have, and had a high old time, but everything comes at a price, and that price is being born by the authors and staff. I personally do not believe he will come out of this, not without selling the company. But it is no longer my concern, and my reasons for leaving go deeper than mere money issues.

I have lots of ideas for what I want to write in 2013, including sequels to books already out, like my To The Max series. I'm at work on Book 3. The second book is no longer available. I would like to be able to sub the second and third together, although I'm also tempted to send the second book out alone to see what might happen. I haven't decided on a publisher yet.

I would like to do something with my website, which is sorely neglected and pitiful. First, I need to get it to where I can actually work on it myself, without using a crapload of html.

So I've been not working again, not last week and not again this week, allowing me to get caught up on some of my shows. American Horror Story: Asylum is amazing. *****SPOILERS****Ian McShane plays a demented Santa Claus serial killer who has a history with Sister Jude and who is given his chance to play Santa again this Christmas thanks to Sister Mary Eunice (who, by the way, is possessed). It is awesome! Sister Jude, while trying to prove that Dr. Arden was once a Nazi (thanks to the woman claiming to be Anne Frank), gets in touch with a Nazi hunter. But that doesn't end well, and through circumstances, Jude ends up as a patient at the asylum! Thredson (who is the Bloody Face killer) ends up being held hostage inside the asylum by Lana and Kit. Lana wants him dead for what he did to her, but Kit needs him alive to prove that he's innocent - quite the quandary. Magnified when Thredson escapes. Frances Conroy, who was in the first season, returns as the Angel of Death, and Dylan McDermott appears as well. I'm truly loving this season, and plan to buy both of them when I can.

Now, for Iron Chef America Redemption. The finale went just as I predicted and  hoped. They eliminated Nate Appleman right off the bat and it became a battle between Amanda Freitag and Alex Guarnaschelli.   ***SPOILERS**** It was an awesome battle, and the secret ingredients were those that reflected the style of three senior Iron Chefs - Morimoto, Flay and Symon. Long story short, Alex won, and the next week went on to battle the Iron Chef UK who eliminated her in the first Iron Chef battle, Judy Joo, and handily beat her. Way to go, Alex! I'm excited at her selection and look forward to some great things from Alex. Unfortunately, I'm afraid this means she won't be Geoffrey's sous chef any more. Great sadness there. They are such a cute couple!

I'm still watching the New Normal, and they've toned Nana down a little, which helps, but sometimes I think that I'm going to stop watching it, but then there'll be these moments between David and Brian that make me go all gooey, and I know I can't. They're too cute together, so I'll keep watching for now.

Sweet Genius is as awesome as ever, and I could watch Chef Ron forever. I finished watching Life After Top Chef. I hope they put Fabio in something else - I'd watch it. If I could afford it, I'd take the Top Chef cruise lol

Justified is coming back this month, and so is Californication. Also The Following is beginning - I might try that.

Well, all for now, back to editing and writing!

Happy New Year to everyone, and I hope 2013 is a great year for all of us! Until next time, take care!
