Wednesday Briefs: Rose and Thorne 6 #15 (4.1)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day ! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

The saga of Ethan's Uncle Benny continues in this week's chapter of Rose and Thorne 6. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what they're up to! Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

Rose and Thorne 6 #15 (4.1)

Surely I hadn’t heard Benny correctly. “The Smithsonian? Like in Washington DC? That Smithsonian?”

Benny chuckled, probably at the look of disbelief on my face. “Yep, that one,” he confirmed.

Ethan gave a low whistle. “That guy certainly has delusions of grandeur, doesn’t he? What made him think he could pull off something like that? I mean, he got caught just robbing a bank?”

Benny nodded. “That he did. And he even served more time than I did. Maybe that’s the problem. He talked to some guys where he was, and he believed some of the stories they told him. You’d be amazed how much guys in prison will lie just to keep from being bored.” He shook his head. “And why he thought I was a good choice to help him with his little project, I’ll never know. Maybe just because I was there. And maybe he thought he could manipulate me the way he did all those years ago.”

Benny paused, and for a moment, his expression seemed far away and distant, as if he was remembering his younger, more foolish self. “Well, once he explained it to me, how could I resist the opportunity to really screw him over but good?”

“I can certainly understand that,” Ethan said and I nodded my agreement.

“Okay, quiz time,” Benny said. “Do you know who controls the Smithsonian?”

Ethan and I looked at one another. I knew I didn’t know the answer to that question, and I wasn’t sure Ethan did either, judging by his blank look.

“I would assume some sort of board of regents,” he said. “I’m not exactly sure how museums work. I’m sure Sarah would know.”

I’d completely forgotten that Ethan’s sister worked at a history museum. Or at least she did at one time. I wasn’t sure what she was doing now, other than trying to hook up with her baby daddy.

“True, very true, but this is no ordinary board of regents,” Benny told us. “This is a rather prestigious group indeed. One that consists of the vice president, the chief justice of the Supreme Court, three members of the Senate, three members of the House of Representatives, and nine citizens.”

Well, that was impressive. I had no idea, and neither did Ethan, But he was quicker drawing conclusions regarding that new knowledge than I was. My boy is certainly brilliant, I’ll hand him that.

“So what he did was automatically a federal crime. Or rather what he wanted to do. I suspect you kept that from happening.”

Benny broke into a very broad grin as he pointed one finger at Ethan. “Bingo! Right you are! You’d think he would have learned after the first time. Not like robbing a bank isn’t a federal crime too. That man is not the brightest bulb in the chandelier by any means.”

I had a feeling that part of that critique was meant to apply to Benny himself, for falling for that asshole’s particular brand of bullshit. But I wasn’t about to point that out. I was no psychologist, not even of the armchair variety.

“You were young,” Ethan said softly. “Doesn’t make you stupid.” What did I tell you? Sexy and perceptive.

“Thank you,” Benny quietly replied, and for a moment, nothing was spoken.

At that point, my curiosity got the better of me as I broke the silence. “What exactly did he intend to steal from a museum the size of the Smithsonian? And how did he possibly think he could get away with it?”

GENRE: Mystery

BLURB:

A workaholic bio-medical scientist, Beth Armstrong, is torn between saving her sabotaged ground-breaking multiple sclerosis research or honoring an obligation to care for her chain-smoking, Cuba Libre drinking, ex-flapper aunt. Nursemaid ranks just above catching the plague on Beth’s scale, yet her ex-flapper aunt would prefer anything deadly to losing her independence under the hands of her obsessive compulsive niece. While a murderous culprit runs loose in the science institute, the raucous aunt entertains Beth’s neglected husband with nightly cocktails and stories from the Roaring twenties. The Flapper, the Scientist, and the Saboteur intertwines a corporate espionage mystery with a generational battle-of-wills story between a dedicated professional intent on fighting chaos to restore order and a free-spirited aunt who needs her niece to live in the moment.

“Are you making this up?” Harold frowned.

It sounded like something out of a movie, but Kathleen’s face told otherwise.

“I was still in my dance costume, so Max thought I could slip in unnoticed.” Kathleen grinned. “Now how fine was that? Two big-muscle men hide in the car while I go and get my brains blown out.”

“Did my grandparents know you were an entertainer?” Beth pictured herself with cropped hair, long pearls, and a life of pure fun. “My parents would have a cow.”

“I didn’t want to be in that neighborhood alone, day or night.” Kathleen spoke low.

“Why would your friends put you at risk?” Beth cringed. That sounded like her mother.

“They found a guy named Sullie to be my escort. But Max said we had to be careful because Sullie played both sides, which can get a person a ticket to the bottom of the river.”

Beth and Harold looked at each other, then burst out laughing.

“Child, what’s so funny?”

“Go on, we’ll be quiet—honest.”

“Sullie was waiting on the corner where they let me off. We sauntered along as if we were doing the town. We all agreed, if it was Sophie, we wouldn’t do anything, and Max insisted we leave right after her number. She wouldn’t be able to see us because of the stage lights.”

Beth could feel the cold night air, the rush of adrenaline.

Book Review: Bleach, Vol 53 by Tite Kubo

Bleach, Vol 53

Author: Tite Kubo

Publisher: Viz Media

American release date: December 4, 2012

Format/Genre/Length: Paperback/Manga/Supernatural/192 pages

Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★

Ginjo is not only dismayed at Rukia’s unexpected appearance where she hands Ichigo a sword, he is shocked that Ichigo still has any powers since he thought he drained him of them. Turns out the sword contains the power of a number of the captains from Soul Society. At the Old Man’s request, they’ve come to help Ichigo, since he was instrumental in saving Soul Society. Renji, Byakuya, Hitsugaya, Kenpachi, and Ikkaku are all there with Rukia and ready to do battle. Apparently Ginjo and Tsukishima’s little scheme has failed. But Ichigo learns something surprising. Before him, there was another deputy soul reaper. And apparently that man was Kugo Ginjo!  The plot thickens!

Chad and Orihime are baffled at the turn things have taken, still under the mistaken impression that Tsukishima is a long-time friend. They assume the Soul Reapers are there to help them but they seem to be on Ichigo’s side! And why does Orihime feel so bad when she sees Ichigo cry? Mercifully, Kiskue and Isshin take Chad and Orihime out of the battle, although Isshin complains about having to take the heavy one (Chad, of course lol)

Ginjo distributes the power he has taken from Ichigo among his people, who are amazed at the way they feel. Yukio creates arenas in order to force match-ups between the two sides. Kenpachi sees Byakuya has been paired with Tsukishima and wants him to switch since he thinks he’s stronger than his opponent but that doesn’t work and he is left with Giriko. Ichigo faces Ginjo, but is unexpectedly joined by Uryu, who apologizes to Ichigo for not telling him sooner what he surmised concerning the deputy badge. Hitsuguya faces Yukio, whom he dubs the “annoying guy”, while it’s Rukia versus Ruriko, who keeps trying to bombard her with cute things. Ikkaku is stuck battling with Tsukishima’s lackey, Shishigawara, the lucky one. Will his luck run out against Ikkaku? Renji is paired up with Jackie Tristan and her Dirty Boots, but he refuses to strike first against a woman.

Let the battles begin!

To be honest, I just want to see Ichigo and the Soul Reapers kick a lot of Fullbring hiney and end this obnoxious arc. Not much to say other than each battle brings its own troubles that have to be overcome. Even so, it’s a foregone conclusion who will ultimately win, so it’s more a question of how than who. Even so, still love the series, looking forward to the next volume.

GENRE: Contemporary Erotic Romance (Mafia Romance - Reverse Harem)

BLURB:

Karma is a bitch—but then again, so am I.

Ten years ago, a group of men murdered my mother and thought they had killed me. I’ve spent every day since planning revenge against the man behind the attack—my father. As the head of a powerful crime family, he won’t be an easy target, but nothing matters more than making him pay for what he’s done.

Now, I return in disguise, only to end up on the radar of the Quad—the four most dangerous men in the city…men I’ve been desperately in love with since I was a teen. I have no idea if they were in on the plan to have me killed, but I can’t stop myself from craving their taste, their bodies and their rough, domineering touches. Even though I know the risks, I keep falling deeper into our twisted relationship.

My plan is simple—find and get rid of the people who carried out the attack, kill my father…and don’t fall in love with the men who might have betrayed me.

This world already killed me once—let it try again.

EXCERPT:

Good lord, as it turned out, banging four guys took a lot out of a girl. I should have expected it, but pornography made it all look so easy.

They didn’t show the next day, the aches, the sore muscles, the hickeys or marks from bites.

Then again, maybe that was like romance novels not showing how a year down the road, the leading man had stopped washing his ass. People like to see the good, the exciting, and forget the rest, the reality and the aftermath.

A good night’s sleep had helped me put myself back together after the huge mistake of having sex with the Quad.

I’d known it hadn’t been smart, but by the end, it had become clear just how stupid the choice had been. I’d wanted to feel something and had ended up overwhelmed by it all.

Be careful what you wish for.

It hadn’t really happened until the end, until that last orgasm had cracked me wide open, when I’d leaned against Rune, when I’d lifted my head to see Bray and Dane staring at me, and I’d wanted….

Something.

I hadn’t dared allow myself to take that thought to its conclusion, to consider what I wanted, because it wasn’t possible.

For so many reasons.

I doubted they wanted anything real. I couldn’t trust them, and I’d likely be dead soon anyway. All of it meant this was cursed from the start, and that terrifying moment of desire had made me shut down…hard. I’d welcomed that coldness again and let it consume me, had allowed it to hide anything I felt beneath miles of solid ice.

Saturday is Horror Day #52 - Deliver Us From Evil, Fantasy Island

 Deliver Us From Evil

Hitman In-nam (Jung-min Hwang) is ready to pack it in and retire to the sunny beaches of Panama. He agrees to one last hit for his boss and takes out a Japanese mobster.  While on the job, he receives a call from his ex wanting his help, but he doesn't have time for her. The next day he learns that she has been killed and her nine-year-old daughter is missing. On top of that, the mobster he killed has a younger brother, Ray (Lee Jung-jae) who will stop at nothing to avenge his death.

This business just got personal.

In-nam follows the trail of the kidnappers to Thailand where he engages the services of a guide, a

transwoman named Yui (Jeong Min Park).Learning that the children are being stolen for their body organs, In-nam and Yui pose as a couple who are in search of a kidney. They find a group of children who are locked-up, waiting to be sold, but Yoo-min (So-yi Park) is not among them. They continue to follow the trail, even as they are being pursued by Ray, intent on killing the man who killed his brother.

This film starts off a bit slow, and at first I was a little confused as to who was doing what and why, but the pace picked up and I finally caught on. For fans of Squid Game, be prepared to see Gi-Hun in a much different light as the tatted vengeful killer.

I thought Jeong Min Park did a great job as Yui and Lee Jung-jae was sexy as Ray. It was a good film, very enjoyable. I give it a solid 4 Stars. I found another film that Jung-min Hwang and Lee Jung-jae are in together, called New World, and I plan to watch it too.

Fantasy Island

Have you ever wanted to change a past decision? To take the road not taken? To undo an old regret? Then come to Fantasy Island, where you can live out your fantasy... to its natural conclusion.

Gwen (Maggie Q) regrets the day she didn't say yes to the marriage proposal from her boyfriend, Robbie (Allen Chambers). But you can't go back and changes things... or can you?

Melanie (Lucy Hale) has had revenge on her mind ever since high school when she was tormented on a daily basis by Sloane (Portia Doubleday). All of the bad things in her life stem from that time, and she wants nothing more than to get revenge on Sloane, and see her tortured as she once was.

JD and Brax (Ryan Hansesn and Jimmy O. Yang) are brothers, although nobody believes them since Brax is Asian. But JD's father married Brax's mother when Brax was still in diapers, and they've been close over since. Now their biggest fantasy is to have it all...

Patrick (Austin Stowell) always wanted to join the military but never did, for personal reasons. The closest he ever came to performing service was to become a policeman. Now he fantasizes about being an actual soldier

What do they have in common? They've all just arrived on Fantasy Island.

Fantasy Island is a place where dreams and fantasies can come true. But always be aware of the old adage... be careful what you wish for. The host of Fantasy Island is the enigmatic Mr. Roarke *Michael Pena). He is there to see to his guests comfort as they fulfill their fantasies. There are only two rules on the island. One is that there is only one fantasy per guest. The second is that the fantasy must play out to its natural conclusion.  But he always says that "Fantasies rarely play out as you or I might expect."

Fantasy Island is based on the TV series by the same name, which originally starred Ricardo Montalban and Herve Villechaize, but the director and writers have taken these stories in an entirely different direction. Would you expect any less from a Blumhouse film? These are the people, after all, who brought us Paranormal Activity (which series I love). The film has twists and turns you won't see coming, and the ending is far from predictable.

Although I did see some negative reviews, I personally enjoyed watching it. I thought the acting was good, Michael Pena makes a good Mr. Roark.I recognized his assistant Julie (Parisa Fitz-Henley) from having seen her as Fiji in the series Midnight Texas. You might remember Jimmy O. Yang from Crazy Rich Asians, another wonderful film.

Watch for references to the series, and just the obvious ones, such as "The plane" or Mr. Roarke's iconic white suit. It was enjoyable to watch and I do recommend it. I'm giving it 4.5 Stars.

When Uryu arrives, Ichigo doesn’t know if he’s siding with the others or not. But in one move, he now realizes who his enemy really is.

Poor Ichigo has it hard in this volume of Bleach. His friends and family think he’s acting badly and he can’t make them see that it’s Tsukishima who’s the enemy, not him. Kiskue and Isshin seem to be up to something, not sure what. Guess we’ll find out in time.  I was right not to trust those Fullbrings! Can’t wait for the next volume!

Wednesday Briefs: Rose and Thorne 6 #14 (3.4)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day ! If it's Wednesday, then it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

Ethan and Vinnie have been assigned to protect Ethan's Uncle Benny because he's a witness. Uncle Benny's story continues in this week's chapter of Rose and Thorne 6. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what's up with them. Their links follow my tale! Enjoy!

Rose and Thorne 6 #14 (3.4)

“Is Connor McKenzie the reason you’re here now?” Ethan asked when his uncle paused for breath.

Clearly Ethan and I were on the same wavelength.

Benny nodded. I thought I caught a glimpse of anger in his eyes, but that was quickly extinguished. “Connor McKenzie is absolutely the reason I am here with you now. And before I tell you the next part, I really would like a drink. How about you?”

Despite our earlier argument that we were working, I decided I was game if Ethan was game. Not like we didn’t drink on the job when it was required, especially when we were in Florida chasing the Mangler, going from bar to bar with our then-partner Eva June. Also, we were no doubt in for the night with no intentions of leaving the hotel, so no driving would be involved. We could always order in if we needed anything the hotel couldn’t provide.

Ethan agreed so Benny called Room Service and before long we were each holding an ice cold bottle of Guinness stout and listening as Benny continued to tell his tale.

“Well, as I said, Connor was exceedingly attractive and oh so charming. He knew how to get exactly what he wanted from anyone. Including me, obviously. I’m sure that’s why when I accidentally ran into him just a couple of years ago he assumed he could work his wiles on me once more and the past would be at least forgotten, if not forgiven. He’s just that kind of narcissist. Unfortunately for him, I’d learned my lesson during the five years I spent in prison because of him, and I had become immune to his considerable charms. I had no intention of forgetting, much less forgiving. To be honest, when he first approached me, I wanted nothing to do with him and I almost told him where he could go and what he could do when he got there. But then curiosity got the better of me. I wanted to find out what he was up to before I gave him the big heave-ho. Maybe save some other poor sucker from suffering the same fate that I had.”

He took another long breath before raising the bottle to his lips, regarding Ethan over the rim with a somewhat distant gaze before finally speaking again.

“I think you were about sixteen the last time I saw you, does that sound right?”

Ethan nodded.

“Ten years. What a difference time makes, right? The things that we take for granted now… well, they weren’t always that way. I guess I was naïve to think if I came out I’d be accepted for who I was, at least by my own family. And don’t think I blame Maureen, cause I don’t,” he hastily added, although I’m sure Ethan hadn’t been about to accuse him of that. “Your mother wasn’t happy at all with Joe and the things he said when he threw me out and told me never to return. I think his exact words were never darken my doorstep again!”

I couldn’t help but smile as Benny executed a perfect imitation of Joseph Thorne’s deep ministerial voice, and I noticed Ethan did the same. Benny winked at us before turning serious once more.

“I know Maureen had no choice. She was his wife, what could she do?” He shrugged. “Different times. Since then, she’s told me over and over how sorry she was that she didn’t stand up to him, but I get it. I really do. I’m just glad she didn’t let your father walk all over you and Vinnie.”

‘You can thank Vinnie for that.” Ethan’s voice held an unmistakable note of pride, one that warmed me to my core. “You should have seen him. Vinnie stood up to him and told him exactly what he thought of him. And Joe Jr too, and Heather.”

“That must have been quite the sight.” Benny chuckled. “Wish I could have been there.”

“Do you think you ran into this guy again by accident? Or maybe it was planned?” Seemed like a strange coincidence to me.

“Oh yes, I’m sure it was,” Benny assured us. “You should have seen his face when he first saw me. For just a moment, I thought he was going to shit himself. Then his inner snake took charge and butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth. No one knew where I was. Not my own family, much less anyone else. And certainly not any mutual acquaintances, cause I hadn’t kept touch with them either.”

“I’m so sorry you had to go through that,” Ethan said sincerely. “If you don’t mind my asking, what were you doing all those years? How did you get by?”

“I don’t mind,” Benny said. “I have nothing to hide.” He drained his bottle of beer and reached for another. “I did a lot of traveling. Here there and everywhere. Doing whatever I could. Construction, retail… spent some time as a line cook for a restaurant in San Francisco. Worked on a fishing boat in Seattle. Even worked on a ranch for a little while.  It’s a beautiful country we have, you know, and I was privileged to be able to see a lot of it. But honestly, I’ve missed Georgia. I’m glad to be going home, although I wish the circumstances could be better. But at any rate, it was in San Francisco that we ran into each other. In a gay bar, of all places. I recognized him right away. Same pretty face, same rotten interior.” He gave a self-deprecating laugh.

“I let him think bygones were bygones as he plied me with drinks. But I was too smart to let myself get drunk and let him manipulate me. So I volunteered to get the drinks from the bar, and I told the bartender to make mine virgin and double his.”

He paused for effect. “Imagine my surprise when he said we would knock over the Smithsonian.”
