Angel Boy
by Annalisa Russo

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Romance (20th Century)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Private Investigator Meg Cavelli wonders why her traitorous family has trotted out the fatted calf for Seth Truitt, the boy who left her flat eight years ago. Now he’s back, sexier than she remembers, and needs her help. How can Meg accept Seth’s no-strings-attached deal in return for bringing a deranged predator to justice, when their steamy attraction to each other might very well get in the way?

Army Air Corps pilot Seth Truitt needs help to erase his dark-stained past, but soon realizes helping Meg Cavelli solve a dogged criminal case in return for salvaging his military career might be more dangerous than flying P-26 fighters for USAAC. But since Seth has no intention of letting Meg go again, he’ll stop at nothing to keep her safe from the twisted, unnatural threat they dubbed “the monster” as kids.

As the mystery unfolds, joining their minds and hearts might be the only way to stay alive.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Seth Truitt stood on the street in front of the only home he remembered. The autumnal drizzle of mid-October wet his thick mop of brown hair and plastered the starched shirt of his uniform against his skin. He turned back, grabbed his leather flight jacket and small duffel bag off the back seat, and paid the Yellow Cab hackie.
As the cab sped away he let the sight of Bellaluna sink in, soothe.
Bellaluna, beautiful moon in Italian, the ancestral home of the Cavelli family—people who took him in—raised him really—a place for family, for love, and now for sanctuary, he thought.
His Army Air Corps-issued boots crunched gravel underfoot on the long walk to the back yard. The overspent blooms of summer stretched proudly upward from terra cotta pots set on the flagstone portico. Faith’s attempt at a green thumb—his sister, Doctor Faith Cavelli now, and only living blood relative.
Two automobiles were parked out front. One vehicle he hadn’t recognized—a snazzy, brand-new Buick Coupe in hot red. Maybe from Gabriel Cavelli’s auto and motorbike collection. Gabe…one of his titulary uncles.
The three Cavelli brothers: Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel, named after the archangels by their overly optimistic mother; Michael, proverbial head of the family, shrewd, astute businessman; Raphael, globe-trotting archaeologist, now curator of the Field Museum; and Gabriel, confrontational, Harley-riding badass, self-made entrepreneur.
He wasn’t related to any of them by blood… but he was by heart, by love.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

We pulled into the underground parking at King Security and Luke parked the SUV in line with several other huge black Ford Expeditions. It appeared King Security had its own fleet.

Unable to stop myself, I blurted, “You were with Anna when you were undercover with my father, weren’t you?”

Luke pulled the keys from the ignition. In the deafening silence I didn’t think he was going to answer. Then he turned to me and bit out. “Yes!”

Wow! I didn’t expect him to be so honest. I sat back and folded my arms, tight. Damn, his answer hurt me. “So you make a habit of lying to your women? Being with them while you’re pretending to be someone you’re not? Is that your thing?”

“She wasn’t my woman,” Luke growled. “She was just a woman. She was there, I was there. It was never deep and it sure as hell wasn’t forever. Then it was over, and I made certain she was clear of the investigation. That was it.” He leaned towards me and said impatiently, “That tell you what you want to know?”

“Not even close. You made love to her didn’t you?”

“Hell no!” Luke snarled. “I fucked her. Like I have all the other women in my life. There’s only one woman I ever made love to Katya. And that was you.”

I went rigid, stunned into silence. Luke turned to open his car door. “You didn’t make love to me, Michael did,” I whispered.

Wednesday Briefs: A Woman Scorned

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

This week, I took a detour from my usual flash because while listening to Burn this morning (and yes, I am Hamilton obsessed lol), I was inspired to write a little sketch from Eliza's point of view. I call it A Woman Scorned. Don't forget to see what the other Briefers are up to. Their links follow my tale!  Enjoy!

A Woman Scorned

“Eliza, please! It was a mere slip of the tongue, nothing more.”

Eliza Hamilton gave her husband an icy stare. The man was brilliant, there was no doubt about that, but sometimes he had no common sense. The trouble with Alexander was he talked too much, and didn’t allow himself time to think through what he was going to say.

“The tongue gives voice to what is in the mind,” she retorted, and had the satisfaction of watching him wince at her words. Good, let him suffer. Why should she suffer alone? She knew he had not come through this thing unscathed, but at the moment she held no sympathy for him.

The only good thing that had come out of the whole affair, as far as Eliza was concerned, other than the opportunity to spend time with her sister Angelica, was that Alexander had pretty well shot his presidential ambitions in the foot. Perhaps now he’d stay at home more, and be the father and husband she’d always hoped he’d be.

Although there were times, such as now, when she wasn’t sure how much she wanted to have him there.

Eliza shivered. The infernal heat of New York City in the summer had given way to autumn’s briskness. Although she wore a shawl, the fragile lace did little to impart warmth.

“Perhaps we should return home,” her husband suggested in his most solicitous manner. The man could be charming when he had a mind to be. His words almost brought a smile to her weary soul but then she remembered she was not the only one Alexander Hamilton had charmed and her resolve stiffened. “Or take a carriage. I fear the chill of the evening air when you are so recently recovered from your confinement.”

“No, we must be seen,” she said, perhaps a bit more sharply than she intended.  Their last child had been born in August; she would not allow Alexander to use his birth as an excuse to avoid the public. “We will make an appearance this evening. And we shall walk, as we always have.” And that ended that discussion.

As far as Eliza was concerned, the matter was a private one between her and her husband. Never mind that he wrote the whole thing down and published it for the world’s perusal.  Never mind he’d revealed himself to be an adulterer in order to save his precious legacy and in so doing destroyed their lives. What would she tell the children when they were old enough to understand? The pamphlet was out there, and it was available, and she feared what would happen should they discover the truth about their father.

Philip was old enough to understand now. And while he was disturbed by his father’s actions, he steadfastly supported him because he loved him, and would not listen to anyone denigrate Alexander in his presence.

Eliza hoped that championing Alexander in the face of his guilt would not come back to haunt Philip in his later life. Men were often known by the choices that they made. Wasn’t Alexander living proof of that?

But she couldn’t worry about any of that now. Now they must present a united front, for their marriage must appear sold to the world’s scrutiny—none were entitled to know the truth. Only Angelica, her dearest sister and best friend and faithful companion knew the effort required to maintain the façade of the loyal spouse. Much as she knew Angelica adored Alexander, Eliza knew her sister was there for her and always would be. Angelica was the only reason Eliza was going to be able to get through this—her sister gave her strength, even in the face of adversity.

“Good evening Alexander, Miss Eliza.”

Eliza felt Alexander stiffen beside her at the first sounds of that familiar voice. She did not share her husband’s dislike of Aaron Burr, an animosity she suspected was prompted by more than a little jealousy as from any other motivation.

They stopped, face to face. Alexander tightened his grip on Eliza’s arm. She withdrew from him to free her hand.

“Good evening, Mr. Burr,” she greeted him, offering him her hand. One thing she appreciated about Aaron Burr was that he was never less than a complete gentleman. She remembered his late wife, Theodosia, and how devoted the couple had been to one another.

Burr took her hand and bowed over it, his fathomless eyes seeming to probe her very being. She suspected he knew more than he would ever reveal about Alexander’s perfidy. But unlike her husband, he would never be so crass as to expose such information to the world. She saw kindness there, and sympathy.

“Will you be joining us this evening?” She assumed he’d received an invitation to the soiree. After all, they often ran in the same circles. To paraphrase the Bard, politics did make strange bedfellows.

Burr glanced between them. Eliza had the feeling he was assessing them before making a response. She found herself hoping he would answer in the affirmative.

“It would be my pleasure,” he said, and his smile was most radiant. “I’m taking the air first, but I shall see you shortly.” He nodded to each of them in turn, continuing on his way. He was probably still in earshot when Alexander spoke up.

“Why must you encourage him?” he asked in a petulant tone as they resumed their stroll. “You hold no animosity toward him, although he also had a relationship with Mar—“He caught himself just in time. “With Mrs. Reynolds,” he hastily amended.

“As her lawyer,” she reminded him coldly. Why could he not keep the strumpet’s name from his conversation?

“I only meant—” he began, but she shushed him quickly.

“We are here, let’s have a pleasant evening.”

Before he could voice his nightly request, she cut him off. “You will sleep in your office until I say otherwise.”

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Wednesday Briefs: Moving Forward #58 (14.2)

Good morning and Happy Hump Day! If it's Wednesday, it must be time for more flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction every week, 500 to 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

The cruise is winding down, and it's the last night on board the ship. Time to party hearty in this week's episode of Moving Forward. Don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what they're up to. Their links follow my tale!  Enjoy!

Moving Forward #58 (14.2)

Denver and Dustin were waiting for them when they arrived in the dining salon.

“Good thing you sent us in first,” Denver commented as they took their seats around the table. “Look at this place. It’s packed.”

“Guess everyone had the same idea we did,” Lee said.

Wall-to-wall men. Testosterone filled the air in abundance.

“Last night to get laid,” Dustin quipped, and everyone laughed.

Every table was decorated with a centerpiece consisting of the same beautiful flowers Marshall remembered seeing on the islands, in brilliant shades of red and orange and purple, and each bouquet bore the familiar Gay Pride flag. A fitting end to his first gay cruise.

A server appeared, and they all ordered beer and appetizers, followed by more beer and thick steaks and crispy fries. Dessert was a coconut Panna Cotta with mango and sweet whipped cream. Everything was done to perfection.

Afterward, they walked up to the deck for a last look at the ocean by moonlight. Marshall found himself standing next to Dustin. Lee and Denver were engrossed in conversation farther down the rail. They stood together in a companionable silence. Marshall was trying to decide which he wanted to do more—find one of the night clubs and dance, or get Lee naked as soon as possible.

He was surprised Dustin wasn’t taking advantage of the night to find a partner. Men were being less than subtle in their propositions. The only way to avoid being asked to go to bed was to appear as if you were already taken. And sometimes that didn’t help, especially for those men whose philosophy was the more the merrier. Marshall knew he’d never be one of those guys. He was happy being one of two.

Laughter filled the air as men eagerly hooked up for this final night at sea.

“If you want to…” Marshall was trying to be delicate. He didn’t want Dustin to think he was trying to get rid of him, just wanted to let him know he’d understand if Dustin wanted to hook up with someone.

“If I want to what?” Dustin gave him a perplexed look.

So much for subtlety.

“Um, you know.” Marshall shrugged. “I thought maybe… for your last night…”He turned away, watching the moonbeams dance across the water, in case he’d embarrassed Dustin with his question.

“Oh.”

Marshall held his breath, in anticipation of either an explosion or an argument… or worse. He was surprised to hear a low chuckle from Dustin. He glanced back at him.

“Yeah, I don’t blame you for thinking that, but honestly, I’m not interested in a one-night stand.”

Before Marshall could say anything, Dustin quickly added, “And I’m not going to hit on you again, honest.”

That was a comforting thought.

“No, I get it, I really do,” Dustin continued,”But that doesn’t mean I don’t want the same thing you and Lee have. And I’m not going to find it by hanging out in bars. I bet you didn’t meet Lee in a bar, did you?”

Marshall shook his head. “No, I sure didn’t.” Not that he was about to admit how they really did meet. That was and always would be none of Dustin’s business.

“Maybe moving to Tucker Falls will help. At least I hope so. Are you guys from Texas originally?”

“No, Georgia,” Marshall replied. “We just ended up in Texas.”

“Great place to live. I just need to find my own place in it, you know?”

Marshall nodded. “Yeah, I can understand that. Oh, don’t let me forget to give you my email address.”

“I won’t forget,” Dustin promised. “You know something?”

“What’s that?” Marshall asked.

“Lee’s a damn lucky man.”

“And Lee knows it.”

Marshall heard Lee’s voice at the same time he felt his arm around his waist, the brush of his lips across his head. He couldn’t help but tingle at Lee’s touch.

“You’re both lucky,” Dustin said.

“Amen to that,” Denver agreed. He stood beside Dustin, grinning at Marshall and Lee.

“Hey cuz, want to get a last drink or two?” Dustin suggested.

“Sounds good to me. You guys coming?” he asked Marshall and Lee.

Lee pressed more tightly against Marshall’s back, and Marshall knew damn well the decision was his to make, and that Lee wouldn’t squawk either way.

“I think we’ll catch up to you in the morning,” Marshall said.

“Sounds like a plan. Want to catch breakfast here or Galveston?”

“How about Galveston? We can meet you and get off the ship together.”

“Okay, just text me in the morning. G’night, guys. C’mon, Dust.”

“Night,” Dustin said, following his cousin.

“See you in the morning,” Lee said, as Marshall turned to face him. “I take it you don’t want to go to the bar?”

“Nope. Hot tub, cold drinks and you sounds like the perfect way to spend our last night,” Marshall said.

Lee grinned. “Then let’s do it.”

BLURB:

October starts out warm and sunny, but this is the month when everything changes. Mornings grow frosty, leaves change colors, and the breeze takes on a bite.

Summer dies.

It’s a time for harvest celebrations. A boy loans a girl his coat. She snuggles a little closer and takes his hand. A riot of autumn splendor accompanies the farmer’s market where they stroll.

But the vibrancy of daylight doesn’t compare to the darkness of night. Is that chill on your neck the breeze or something else?

October night

You walk a tad faster and look over your shoulder. The trees creak when the wind whips through their branches—at least, you hope that noise came from the undulating bows.

You check under the bed and inside the closet before climbing under the covers. Sleep doesn’t come easy. The old house groans its complaints, and the night magnifies every innocuous noise until terror paralyzes you—because you know nefarious things go bump in the night.

Welcome to the

Paranormal Bar & Grille Blog Tour

…where you can rub elbows with everyone from a gargoyle or vampire, to a creature from urban legend, or the ghostly realms of myth. Step up to the bar, grab a booth. You never know what’s on the menu, or if you might end up there yourself.

Sound like your kind of hangout? Then you’ve come to the right place. We’re a group of five authors who love nothing more than to trigger the chill that crawls up your back, the nervous glance tossed over your shoulder. We invite you to discover outstanding books and check out our awesome tour prizes.

Just be careful of what the bartender serves you. That heady brew may not be a beer, and witches can’t be trusted to provide effective antidotes.

Vampire Island

My name is Zoe Tempest. Just let me say, I had no intention of becoming a vampire hunter. My world revolved around the trendiest clothes, the boy of the week and shopping.

My life was as close to perfect as a seventeen year old can get. I had everything. Then my parents were murdered and my world came crashing down.

After their funeral, I went to live with my uncle Julian Kilmer. That’s when everything changed. In a manner more terrifying than anything I could have imagined.

Craig Boyack

Just a fiction writer, trying to reach the world.

Craig came to fiction writing later in life than most authors. He always had to write, to one degree or another as part of various jobs. Early one winter morning, he conquered the Internet and didn’t feel like shoveling the sidewalk until the
sun came up. He tried a few pages of fiction and got hooked.

Craig doesn’t like limitations and calls himself a writer of speculative fiction. It’s a broad field, but he limits himself to science fiction, paranormal, and a bit of fantasy.

He has eight published works—six novels and two collections of short stories.

Mystery & Suspense…with a dash of Myth & Romance

 Genres:
Mystery, Psychological Thrillers, Supernatural Suspense, Romantic Suspense
Quirky fact I don’t want anyone to know:
(or maybe I do)….I saw a UFO when I was six. Probably why I write some of the stuff I do.
~ooOOoo~

Bio:
They say everyone has a story to tell.

I wrote my first childish “masterpiece” at six and was immediately bitten by the writing bug. Since then, I’ve been composing nonstop, and have dabbled in multiple genres over the years, writing everything from fantasy, westerns, and horror to inspirational fiction, romance, and sci-fi. It took me a while to find my niche, but I’ve settled comfortably into the mystery/suspense genre (with a just a dash of romance tossed in).

Several of my earlier works have strong romantic themes, but all are infused with threads of mystery. I have a passion for folklore, myth, and urban legends and that attraction often factors into my writing. You’ll find threads of archaic tales and mysterious places woven throughout many of my novels.

I am a member of the International Thriller Writers and a past president of the Central Pennsylvania Writer’s Organization. If I’m not camped out at my keyboard or have my nose buried in a book, I’m likely looking up blurry images of cryptids on Google, sorting through vintage photographs or imagining life as a cat.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Tybeski nodded and walked out. Now alone, Mihai escorted Sonia to the sofa and sat
down next to her. Viktor stood behind the leather-bound chair adjacent to the sofa, bracing his hands on the headrest, keeping a certain distance between them.
"Sonia, tell me what happened."
"Viktor is a werewolf."
"What? Impossible!" Mihai got to his feet, a wave of nervous apprehension threading
through him.
"It is possible, Mihai. A wolf named Bane bit me on our honeymoon. I have transformed," Viktor said quietly.
Mihai lunged at his friend, grabbing the right lapel of his frock jacket. His nostrils were distended with shock, coupled with fear. For him. For Sonia. For Moldavia.
"How could you? You were armed!"
"Mihai, no, don't harm him. He tried to fight them, but they overpowered him." Sonia got to her feet and clenched her fists against his chest. "You have to help him -- you're a witch, after all. You have to teach me to help him."
Mihai took a step back, his body as tight as a bowstring. Yes, he was a witch, but he had no idea what to do. He was no teacher.
"I must go to Mulfaltar the next full moon and meet with my maker's pack," said Viktor.
Mihai slowly ran his gaze over Viktor. Sonia was right. His eyes were no longer soft and kind, but hard and edged.
"Are you a danger to Sonia?"
