Virtual Book Tour: Life Worth Living

The Questions
1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
a.       I’m going to have to go with Bear Grylls since he has all those fantastic survival skills and my best chance at making it back to civilization and my pile of books-to-be-read. And since I don’t relish the thought of drinking anyone’s urine, I’m going to have drinking water as my item. I’m a fan of Man Versus Wild and as long as the island is tropical, this could be a relaxing vacation.
2)      Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?
a.       Phantom of the Opera but I don’t identify with Christine. There’d have to be a gender reversal in there and I get to be the phantom with the beautiful gay Chris…actually this might play into my next book a bit. Interesting…
3)      Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scene using them:  galaxy, jet, cream
a.       Galaxy Jet Cream is the most unusual name for creamy lube that could have ever been invented. Understandably, it’s very slippery and with the creaminess that isn’t sticky. But does it really need to have the cheesy slogan of “Out of this world!” emblazoned on the label? I was horrified upon first inspection when I saw the tiny bottle in the top drawer of my best friend’s night stand. But the more I played with the smooth substance, the more intrigued I became. It was missing the familiar sticky goo feeling and there was a pleasant smell, too. Why not? I had a few minutes to spare and decided to spend some quality time with the cream and my trusty right hand. It was even better than indicated on the tube. A few minutes later, I was flying high and sufficiently out of breath when my friend knocked on the door.
“That’s my mom’s face cream,” he said. “Did it remove all your wrinkles?” He left the room and his snickering could be heard all the way down the hall.
4)       You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why?
a.       Yikes! Most of the stories I read are M/M so I doubt they’d want me in their bedrooms so I’d have to go with one that wasn’t in the genre. Perhaps, Vicious from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Or maybe Rhage…those two are definitely my favorite Brothers (that’d be interested in me anyways!)
5)      What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?
a.       I’m terrible at romance off the page so I’d probably leave that to him. We had a fantastic time one night with a delicious dinner theater in Minneapolis when we watched Hairspray. That was a memorable evening out together.
6)      When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
a.       Typically, I just jump right in with the main characters and the rest of the story comes together around them. I fill in secondary characters followed by a thin plot outline that morphs into more details over time. But, it’s the two main characters that start me out because if you don’t love them then the story doesn’t really matter.
7)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?
a.       Margaret Cho would be awesome since she’s Asian and socially unacceptable. I love that she’s so outspoken about living in dual cultures that’s similar to my own upbringing.
8)      Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?
a.       Vlad the Impaler because he’s an all-around badass and there isn’t anyone scarier than him. Ever.
9)      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?
a.       I have a thing for Shakespeare that’s probably weird and then there’s Benjamin Franklin. He was such the lady’s man and it would have been hard to resist him.
10)   Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?
a.       I’ve toyed around with a YA trans story but it isn’t polished enough and then there’s a plot bunny around sexy mummy paranormal that could be a bit weird. Those will have to wait until they can be told correctly.

“Cora? He’s really gone, isn’t he?”
“You did what you had to do to save both your life and his career. You didn’t do a goddamned thing wrong, you hear me? You are one of the bravest men I know,” she growled.
“Yeah, right. I’m the gayest man you know.”
“You shut the fuck up right now, Jake. I don’t let anyone bad-mouth you around me and that includes you. It takes a real man to stand up for who he truly is on the inside. The easy way out would be to hide who you are and live in the closet for fear of what the world will say or do to you.”
“Now that’s not fair,” I argued immediately, thinking of Quentin’s situation.
“And for what? Admitting that you want to love another man? It’s a beautiful romantic notion, Jake. You throw yourself bare to the world for love, the noblest feeling in the world, and all you expect in return is someone to return the feeling. And what does that rat bastard do? He shows you what it feels like to be loved, only there was a condition on it, wasn’t there? As long as he could hide you from the world and not be proud of the honest, kind and decent man that you are. He should have been yelling your name from the mountains or something. Instead? Instead, he runs and hides so he can save his face from his family.”

Wednesday Briefs: Vinnie and Ethan: The First Noel, Part I

Happy Wednesday to everyone! This is the last flash before Christmas. Where has the year gone? Is everyone ready for Christmas? Is everyone ready for some flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers? We're a group of authors who bring you our finest flash fiction, between 500 and 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts.

This week, because it's Christmas, I decided to do a special little Vinnie and Ethan flash, beginning today. Also, for those who don't know, I'm proud to announce that my first Vinnie and Ethan book, Bad Dogs and Drag Queens, is going to be published by Dreamspinner Press next year!

This story goes back a few years, and takes place a few weeks after the Thanksgiving flash I wrote. I hope you enjoy seeing more of my two guys, and how they developed as a couple. Don't forget to see what the other Briefers have been up to. Their links follow my tale. Enjoy!

Vinnie and Ethan: The First Noel, Part I

Every day, I found myself falling in love with Ethan Thorne a little more.

Things had changed between us at Thanksgiving. We’d  had the big talk—the one I’d been avoiding what felt like forever—and we’d admitted to having feelings for one another. Strong feelings. Ethan took my breath away when told me he loved me, and had since the moment he first set eyes on me, back when we first met during training and were assigned as partners.

I’d never repeated those same words back to him. I was afraid to think them, much less speak them. I’d never said that to anyone but my mother, and maybe that was the problem. I’d told her I loved her and she’d died, leaving me alone. I know that sounded silly, but I couldn’t help myself. I was afraid to voice my love for Ethan Thorne. Luckily for me, he was a patient man, and he never pushed me. In any way.

“All things in their time, Vinnie,” he’d say. Then he’d kiss me, oh so sweetly, and goose bumps would run up and down my arms, and I’d feel a tingle shoot up my spine and center in the base of my neck, a frisson of pure pleasure. I knew I loved him, but would I ever be able to say the words, to let him know how I felt?

It had only been three weeks since Thanksgiving. We’d been sleeping in the same bed ever since our true confessions. Strictly sleeping. We kissed, sure. A lot. Whenever we weren’t on duty, we were often in the motel room, engaged in heavy petting sessions. But nothing more. Again, that was because of me. I wasn’t ready to take that step. I was a nervous virgin, and I was scared of the way I felt about Ethan, unlike anything I’d ever experienced before.

And now Christmas was almost here, and I knew I wanted to get him a gift. But what? I didn’t have a single clue.

“Vinnie?”

I shook myself from my reverie and glanced up only to meet my reflection in the store display window in front of me. Some high end clothing store, chicly dressed mannequins beckoning to one and all to come in, dress like us, and have a happy holiday.

Personally, I thought they looked ridiculous.

I turned to greet Ethan. We were working undercover at a shopping mall in Charlotte, North Carolina, and had been here for a few days, watching out for shoplifters and purse snatchers and other assorted riffraff. This was a slow time of year, apparently, for federal undercover cops. Rather than leave us idle, the higher ups utilized us in any way they could. Lucky us.

“See anything, babe?” he asked.

I shook my head. “Not a thing. Nothing shaking,” I replied. “Nothing that shouldn’t be.”

“Let’s walk around the mall together,” he suggested, and I readily agreed. We fell into step and he reached for my hand, twining our fingers. His touch was reassuring. He was so calm, so grounded… when we were together, he made me feel as if anything was possible. Including us.

“You know the mall’s closed Christmas Day, right?”

“Yeah, I guess it would be.” Made sense. Most retailers closed this one day of the year, but restaurants stayed open. My mom always had to work on Christmas. I’d stay up late, waiting for her to get off, and she’d always bring home a little something, and we’d share it, whatever it was. One year, they gave her a whole pecan pie and a turkey. That was a wonderful Christmas.

“This is our first Christmas together, Vin.” He stopped, and turned to face me. His beautiful blue eyes were shining, and I knew it wasn’t just the sparkling Christmas lights which surrounded us. My heart skipped a beat just looking at him.

“Yeah, it is,” I agreed, trying to keep that sudden lump in my throat from choking off my words. I felt dumb for being so emotional for no real reason. All right, I had a reason, and it was the man standing in front of me.

“You want to do something special? Go somewhere? Anything you want, baby, just tell me.”

I had no idea what I wanted. Other than to be with Ethan. I didn’t even know what my options were. I shrugged, feeling inadequate. “Not really. What do you want to do?”

“Be with you,” was his immediate reply, and I felt my cheeks heat at the words I couldn’t seem to say which came so easily to him. I felt even worse for not being able to allow him to…. I couldn’t even think the words. I dropped my eyes, but not quickly enough.

He placed one hand beneath my chin and tilted my face up toward him. “I didn’t mean like that,” he said gently. “I just love being with you, Vinnie. I love you so much.”

I was choking up again, the words sticking in my throat. He saved the day once more, leaning down and pressing his lips softly against mine for a moment. “Everything’s okay as long as we’re together. We’ll figure out something, I’m sure.”

I nodded, not trusting my voice. He tucked my arm in his and we resumed our circumnavigation of the mall. It was an enclosed space, with many stores which sold a variety of goods. Anything you could possibly want in a single location. And I still hadn’t been able to think of anything for Ethan.
So why didn’t I ask him what he wanted?

Maybe because that seemed like cheating. Shouldn’t I be able to figure it out for myself? Trouble was, I couldn’t. He was still a mystery to me, one I was slowly unraveling, day by day. And we hadn’t been together long enough for me to know what he wanted.

I still had a week left. Surely I’d come up with something by then.

to be continued

Virtual Book Tour: Nicolas

The Questions
1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person
and what item do you have?
Could I change that to be a kindle with unlimited internet access and a magical cup of coffee that’s never empty and always hot? As much as I like people, I’m the florist at a local gift shop, and during this busy crazy season, it would be a dream to escape for a few days or weeks, be alone, and simply exist. If I can’t have that, then I’d have my husband, who is very resourceful, and a radio to call for help when we’re ready to leave.

2)      Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?
Moulin Rouge. But before you get any ideas, no, my life isn’t that desperate and wonderful. But I can really relate to Christian. I have a tendency to overdramatize situations and fall into the depths of despair… Don’t worry! It never lasts long and I can carry merrily on.

3)      Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scene using them:  galaxy, jet, cream
I dropped back on the tangled sheets and fought for breath. That had been amazing.  The galaxy sped by outside the window and I idly watched the jet stream from the rocket ahead of us twine through the stars. Ken chuckled and kissed my sweaty face, reaching across me for our now cold mug of coffee. He must have felt my pounding heart and he lifted an eyebrow, mischief in his gaze. “Cream?” he asked, and licked his lips.

4)       You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why?
*blinks* Ahem! That is a rather personal question. But if I thought he’d be willing, I’d pick Cam from Shira Anthony’s book Dissonance. Sure, there’s a lot of hot sexy men out there, but this one touched my heart as well.

5)      What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?

A soft blanket in front of the fire, candlelight, soft music and a glass of wine.

6)      When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
I pretty much always start with a character. I’ll notice someone walking down the street or come into the store. Hear a beautiful piece of music or catch a bit of conversation. Almost anything can spark the idea for a character, and pretty soon I need to know his life story. Where does he come from? Where is he going in such a hurry? Who does he love? And wham! A story is born.

7)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?
Scarlett Johansson. I mean, hey! If you’re going to fantasize, why not do it big?

8)     Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?
Michael Myers from the Halloween movies. I saw the first movie one Halloween afternoon, alone. Big mistake! It started about four in the afternoon, and my friends weren’t coming to pick me up until after seven. Thought I’d watch a little television while I waited, and this movie came on.
I liked the beginning, settled down on the couch with some snacks. Pretty soon I started glancing over my shoulder, out the big picture window behind me. It was growing dark outside. We lived in the country so there was no curtains on the window. Was that someone creeping around the yard? I didn’t want to finish the movie, but too afraid to get off the couch to turn the TV off. Creepiest movie I’d ever seen. Scared the daylights out of me, and I loved it!

9)      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?
Thomas Jefferson. I don’t agree with all his political/social ideals, but he was an intelligent,
handsome and passionate gentleman. I could have sat and had a cup of coffee and listened to him for hours.

10)   Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?

I really don’t. I write stories to entertain and titillate and hopefully make people laugh and cry and finish the book satisfied. I have no desire to write anything controversial.

Excerpt:
Jamie startled awake. “What?”
He had trouble breathing, the crushing weight on his chest seeming to have followed him up from his dreams. But that couldn’t be right. He’d rented the cabin for its isolation. No one should be there. Did he still dream?
A warm breath brushed against his cheek, sending a shiver of dread and strange anticipation through him. “Easy, baby,” a silky voice whispered in the darkness. Sharp teeth nipped his earlobe and pleasure and pain sparked along his nerves. His eyes adjusted to the moonlight filtering through the sheer curtains, and he stared in amazement at the man gazing at him with wild green eyes, long pale hair, high cheekbones and a slender neck he craved to run his tongue along.
The stranger laid his weight on him, driving the air from his lungs and making Jamie struggle for every breath. Shifting position, the man sealed his full lips over Jamie’s, drawing a long groan from Jamie when an impossibly large cock slid against his. In sudden panic he reached to shove his unknown visitor away and touched hot skin and lean muscles. Of their own volition his hands roamed lower, following the curve of the stranger’s back to the rounded swell of his ass. He drew a quick breath and the man laughed into his mouth, pushed his tongue deep, thrusting inside to match the movement of his hips as he ground against Jamie’s aching dick.
Heat pooled in Jamie’s stomach. God, what was happening? The thing in his bed looked like a man, but his every instinct shouted otherwise. His skin was warm when it should have been cold from being outside. And how had he gotten in? All the windows and doors were locked tight against the winter storm. It was as if he’d just materialized in Jamie’s bed. “Who—”
He cried out when a hand pushed between them and grabbed their cocks, stroking them together until he lost the ability to think. So close! He grabbed onto the man’s firm ass and yanked him tighter against him, rising up to shove into his strong grip.
The triumphant hiss in his ear shot ice through his veins. “So naughty.”
“No!” Jamie struggled to sit up, scrambling back against the headboard. He blinked, finding himself alone in the room, only his ragged breaths disturbing the silence of the cabin. A forgotten anxiety knotted his stomach. Naughty. He hated that word, tossed about by the boys he once knew in school. The ones he’d suck off behind the gym, desperate for a gentle hand in his hair, balm against his loneliness. He’d been terrified his parents would find out he was different, that he liked girl things and found boys much more exciting than he should. They would know he was gay and there would be hell to pay for their freak of a son.
He scrubbed a hand over his face. God, that had been ages ago. The last shreds of the dream dissipated, and he reached for the bedside light, fumbling in the darkness for the switch. Low light stung his eyes and he blinked at the empty bedroom, unable to believe the attack hadn’t been real.
He flung off the heavy quilts and slid to his feet, clinging to the post at the foot of the bed as a wave of dizziness struck him. Laughter from the other room jolted him. Heart pounding, he bolted for the door and it crashed into the wall as he flung it open. The reddish glow from the banked fire on the hearth lit the main room of the cabin, though the kitchen area remained in shadows.
Jamie’s gaze swept the rooms, focusing on the dark corners.  No one jumped out at him. Nobody sat on the couch. His coffee cup remained undisturbed where he’d left it on the hearth. Of course. The cabin was isolated, miles from the nearest neighbor. Who would bother to come way out there, especially with the threat of another snowstorm on the way?
He ran a trembling hand through his hair, pushing the sweat-drenched bangs from his forehead. Christ, the dream had seemed so real. The cold of the great room finally registered, creeping up from the hardwood flooring. Shaking, he crossed to the fireplace and stirred up the coals, adding another log.
With a sigh, he sank into the cushions of the worn couch and pulled the woolen afghan around his bare shoulders. The log caught and the fire crackled, sparks dancing up the flue. Recalling his dream and the hard body against his, he shrugged when his cock perked up.
“It’s been a while,” he acknowledged, watching the flames lick at the oak log. He’d signed a year’s lease on the cabin, right after catching his boyfriend in the stairwell of their apartment building, making out with their neighbor. It hadn’t been the first time, either, though again Patrick had his apologies ready. That had been over six months ago, and since the cabin stood miles over rough terrain from the nearest town, he’d rarely seen another human being in all that time.
“Just the way I like it,” he told the indifferent fire burning its way through the wood. But the stranger’s lips in his dream had been soft, his thrusting tongue sweet in Jamie’s mouth. He hadn’t liked the violent aspect of the dream, but if that had been a lover in his bed? His dick pressed against his thigh, and Jamie reached under the heavy blanket, moaning when he took its heavy weight in his hand. Drawing lazy circles on his balls, he let the pleasure build slowly, lifting his cock while in his mind the stranger licked the glistening head, his pale gold hair a curtain of silk against Jamie’s sensitive skin. He moaned as the man slid his tongue down the thick vein on the underside of his cock.
His mind flitted over the question of whether the guy would fuck him or want it the other way around. Didn’t matter to him. He liked it both ways. Rolling to his back, Jamie continued to stroke himself while he tugged his tight balls, then pressed a finger against his hole. He remembered the lube in the nightstand drawer by the bed, but he wasn’t about to stop, and hissed when he pushed the finger inside. The man’s cock had been huge in his dream. What would it feel like as it stretched him open? Would it be enough to fill all the empty spaces inside him?
It was a moment before the tolling of a bell outside the cabin registered. What the fuck? Jamie sat up, trying to hear past the pounding of his pulse in his ears. His cock throbbed and he groaned in frustration, knowing he couldn’t chase his pleasure until he found out what was going on at the dock. The only one to boat in was the man who dropped off his monthly supplies, and he’d been and gone two days ago. Who else would be using the dock? Jamie had been isolated for months without anything disturbing his peace. But this night he’d had a wildly erotic dream and now this. What made tonight so special?

Dianne grew up in one of the older homes in the middle of Los Angeles, a place of hardwood floors and secret closets and back staircases. A house where ghosts lurk in the basement and the faces in the paintings watch you walk up the front stairs. Rooms where you keep the closet doors closed tight at night. It’s where her love of the mysterious and wonderful came from.
Dianne now lives in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon with her incredibly patient husband, who puts up with the endless hours she spends hunched over the keyboard letting her characters play. She says Oregon’s raindrops are the perfect setting in which to write. There’s something about being cooped up in the house with a fire crackling on the hearth and a cup of hot coffee warming her hands, which kindles her imagination.
Currently, Dianne works as a floral designer in a locally-owned gift shop. Which is the perfect job for her. When not writing, she can express herself through the rich colors and textures of flowers and foliage.
