The Santa Claus Man: The Rise and Fall of a Jazz Age Con Man and the Invention of Christmas in New York by Alex Palmer Name

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: History/True Crime
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Before the charismatic John Duval Gluck, Jr. came along, letters from New York City children to Santa Claus were destroyed, unopened, by the U.S. Post Office. Gluck saw an opportunity, and created the Santa Claus Association. The effort delighted the public, and for 15 years money and gifts flowed to the only group authorized to answer Santa’s mail. Gluck became a Jazz Age celebrity, rubbing shoulders with the era’s movie stars and politicians, and even planned to erect a vast Santa Claus monument in the center of Manhattan — until Gotham’s crusading charity commissioner discovered some dark secrets in Santa’s workshop.

The rise and fall of the Santa Claus Association is a caper both heartwarming and hardboiled, involving stolen art, phony Boy Scouts, a kidnapping, pursuit by the FBI, a Coney Island bullfight, and above all, the thrills and dangers of a wild imagination. It’s also the larger story of how Christmas became the extravagant holiday we celebrate today, from Santa’s early beginnings in New York to the country’s first citywide Christmas tree and Macy’s first grand holiday parade. The Santa Claus Man is a holiday tale with a dark underbelly, and an essential read for lovers of Christmas stories, true crime, and New York City history.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
It’s impossible to say who wrote the first Santa letter, but it was almost certainly from the mythical saint, not to him.
From the earliest conception of Santa Claus in the United States, parents used the voice of St. Nicholas as a means of providing advice and encouraging good behavior in their children. The earliest reference to a Santa letter in America that I could find came from Theodore Ledyard Cuyler, recalling his childhood in 1820s Western New York when he “once received an autograph letter from Santa Claus, full of good counsels.”
Fanny Longfellow (wife of poet Henry Wadsworth) regularly wrote her children Santa letters, commenting on their behavior over the preceding year. “I am sorry I sometimes hear you are not so kind to your little brother as I wish you were,” she wrote to her son Charley on Christmas Eve 1851.
Soon enough, children started writing back, generally placing their letters on the fireplace, where they believed smoke would transport the message to St. Nick.
By the 1870s, scattered reports appeared of the receipt of Santa letters by local post offices. But with no actual fur-coated toymaker to receive his mail, each January, the department destroyed them.
It was a depressing business. But, officials asked, if mailmen began delivering Santa’s letters, to which other fictional characters would mail be shuttled?
In the face of negative publicity, however, New York City’s postmaster finally relented. Every year, for the entire month of December, any approved organization could answer Santa’s mail. No one volunteered. Then, in 1913, just as the Post Office was about to give up, a man named John Duval Gluck stepped forward. He’d be Santa Claus.
He was also a con artist.
Pages or Words: 200 pages
Categories: Contemporary, Fiction, Gay Fiction, M/M Romance, Romance
Excerpt:
Cory stood up and left the room, his footfalls a staccato beat on the stairs.
“Damn,” David said, grimacing. “I was kind of hoping to let you know about this later on. I mean, hell, you’ve just come out today. That should be enough of a shock.”
“What?” he asked nervously, beginning to wonder what they hadn’t told him. What the hell could they be covering up?
“Uh, this house is….” Alan said.
“Discipline based,” Greg filled in, handing him another muffin.
“What does that mean?” he asked. He took the sweet confection and nibbled on the corner.
“It means we keep to the rules or we come to a meeting with a very hard paddle,” David said wryly as Cory came down the stairs carrying in his hand what looked like a small breadboard. “Meet the enemy.”
They couldn’t possibly mean what he thought they meant. They were all grown men. Surely nobody paddled anyone else. That was… barbaric. He widened his eyes as he crossed one leg over the other. And a turn-on apparently. What kind of freak was he, anyway?
Wednesday Briefs: Moving Forward #11
Happy Wednesday one and all! If it's Wednesday, it must be time for some flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers! We're a group of writers who bring you our best flash fiction every week, between 500 and 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts!
As you may recall, last week I posted the last chapter of Rose and Thorne and I pulled the story and finished it. I am about to sub it, and I have an actual title for the book -   Bad Dogs and Drag Queens! But we still have Marshall and Lee, and last week Lee made a suggestion Marshall didn't seem overly fond of. See what happens in this week's episode of Moving Forward. And don't forget to visit the other Briefers and see what they're up to. Their links follow my tale. Enjoy!
Moving Forward #11 (3.4)
What the hell?
Marshall turned his head to look at Lee, trying to figure out what he was up to, but Lee’s attention was focused on the two men on the other side of the booth. Marshall followed suit to find Dustin staring straight at him. They eyed one another for a long moment before Dustin dropped his gaze to Denver.
“I think that’s a right generous offer, what do you think, Den?”
“Are you sure it’s no trouble, Lee?” Denver asked.
“None at all,” Lee assured him. “Just makes sense. We’re all going to the same place. Why use two cars?”
“Then we’re much obliged, Lee. We’ll split the cost of the gas. No, I insist,” he quickly added when Lee seemed about to object. “No reason for you to foot the whole bill.”
“Okay, that sounds like a plan,” Lee finally agreed.
Well, that seemed to be settled. Nothing to be done about it now. Bad enough Denver and his cousin were going on the same cruise with them, but now they had to share a car all the way to Galveston? Maybe he’d have to bring his iPod along for the trip. If Dustin tried to get chatty, he could just tune him out. On the other hand, he didn’t think Lee would care for that idea too much. He’d consider it to be rude.
Well, it was a big boat. They could probably go the entire trip without bumping into those two.
Hopefully.
Their orders arrived, and conversation turned to other things, primarily Dustin’s computer and what was wrong with it. Marshall felt comfortable on such familiar ground. This was something he understood. He listened carefully as Dustin described what his computer was doing, and Lee jotted notes in a small notebook he’d brought. Marshall asked questions about what kinds of programs Dustin used, what sort of anti-virus he had, and what kinds of things he did on his computer, so he could get some idea of where to look for problems.
But every time he asked Dustin about what he might want to have put onto the computer, Dustin turned evasive. “Whatever you think’s best. You’re the expert.”
Marshall was growing more and more irritated with Dustin by the minute. “Yeah, and I charge expert prices,” Marshall warned him. “Especially for those people who can’t tell me what it is they want.”
Dustin just laughed, and Lee gave Marshall a thoughtful look, but he didn’t say anything. Marshall went back to eating his dinner, focusing on the tender pot roast on his plate. Something about this whole situation was bothering him, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on what that was.
They each had a piece of Milly’s best chocolate cake for dessert, along with ice cream and coffee, then headed out. Lee and Marshall walked Denver and Dustin out to Denver’s pickup in order to collect Dustin’s computer. Dustin reached behind the seats and brought out the box that contained the tower.
“I’ll carry it to your car,” he offered.
“That’s not necessary, I can handle it,” Marshall quickly said, reaching for the box.
“It’s no problem. Really. Least I can do,” Dustin insisted. Marshall tried tugging on the box, but Dustin never relinquished his hold. Marshall scowled at him.
“I have an idea. I’ll take the box,” Lee said in his no-nonsense way. Dustin conceded the computer to Lee’s custody, and Marshall dropped his hands and backed away.
Denver snickered. “Like watching a couple of bulls in a pissing contest.” Both Marshall and Dustin shot him dirty looks. He seemed unconcerned.
“I have your phone number and email address,” Lee said. “We’ll give you a holler when we know something.”
“There’s no rush,” Dustin said. “Why don’t you give me your info?” He pulled out his phone, thumbed down, then looked at Lee expectantly. Lee gave him the business phone number and email. Then Dustin turned to Marshall. “Can I have yours too? Just in case?”
“If I need to talk to you, we have your number,” Marshall said. He set his mouth into a firm line. Hopefully this Dustin would get the hint that he wasn’t getting it. End of story.
Dustin opened his mouth, as if he intended to say something, then changed his mind and closed it again.  “Okay,” he said finally. “That works too.”
Marshall eyed him suspiciously, but didn’t say anything else.
“Well, we better scoot. Gotta drive back to Tucker Falls. I’m sure we’ll see you at Partners sometime before the cruise, don’t you think?”
“If we’re not too busy,” Marshall said before Lee had a chance to speak. He personally intended to see they were too busy to go back, if it meant running into Dustin. Denver he liked just fine, but there was something about this cousin of his that was getting on his last nerve.
They made their farewells, and then Denver and Dustin got into the pick-up and took off, leaving Marshall and Lee to walk back to their truck.
“Something wrong?” Lee asked, once he’d stowed the computer safely in the truck and they’d taken their seats in the cab.
“Not that I know of. Why do you ask?”
“I dunno. You seem bound and determined to be as rude as you can to Denver’s cousin,” Lee observed. “Is there some reason for that kind of behavior, or didn’t I raise you right?”
Marshall’s cheeks flamed. He hadn’t looked on this as an indictment of Lee’s parenting skills, since he never thought of him in those terms, but he could see where Lee might just be upset with him.
“I don’t understand why they’re driving with us,” he said, which was no explanation.
Suddenly he remembered something that had been tickling the back of his mind. Denver worked in a goddamn computer store. So why was his cousin bringing them his computer to fix?
Something just didn’t add up. At that moment, Marshall liked Dustin even less than he had before.
to be continued
Now see what the other Briefers bring to the table!
Pages or Words: 78,000 words
Categories: Fantasy, Fiction, Romance
Excerpt:
I glanced at Aishe to see he had his bow, an arrow nocked, and quiver at his side. He was crouched, still looking ill, but his eyes were hard and flat. I grinned in pride. Nothing could keep my mate down. I let the wind die and the ship slowed, rocking violently, the water lapping hard at its sides. The tentacles caught up and tried to wrap around the ship once again. I didn’t risk fire, but I had another element that was aplenty around me: water. Just as I gathered focus for the next spell, a tentacle tried to slither onto the deck, heading toward me. Before I could react Aishe shot an arrow, puncturing the slimy flesh of the tentacle. Then he ran and leapt over it, and with his sword, sliced off the tip. The tentacle shot back into the water, and the monster bellowed in pain. Aishe spun around, nocking another arrow. He was now close to me, and I could see it was a struggle for him to remain focused. He was sweating profusely and deathly pale. I would have ordered him below deck if I thought he would listen.
More tentacles were now slithering around the ship and the crew did what they could, cutting at the appendages and shooting their own arrows. They gave me the time I needed. I ran across the deck and realized the monster’s tentacles seemed to be following me. I wasn’t surprised, since most creatures could sense magick and many predators were attracted to it. If a predator ate a mage, they sometimes gained the power of their food: you are what you eat. I could use that to my advantage.
I reached the other side of the ship and flung my hand down with another word, using the magick in the water—every element had magick, instilled there by the Mother—and used it to freeze the water. But not just on the surface, I made the ice sink below where the beast rested. I continued the spell, causing the tentacles to freeze. It wasn’t easy to freeze saltwater but as I was using the magick within the element, and not my own to control it, it was much easier. Once the tentacles stopped moving, I instantly swung around and used the wind again to get the ship to move. We shot across the water once more, and I happened to look back to see what the beast was doing. We hadn’t gone very far before the ice broke. I realized the beast was far bigger, and stronger, than I’d suspected. I watched, fascinated and terrified, as the beast surged completely to the surface. Its bulbous head and gaping mouth appeared, its tentacles writhing in rage. Those black, pitiless eyes focused on us, and then the monster dove back into the water. It sped toward us, creating a hump in the water.
I took a deep breath, reaching a decision. It wasn’t going to stop, not until it had eaten me and destroyed the ship. I stopped the wind.
“Everyone hold onto something!” I bellowed. I glanced at Aishe as he clung to the rail, his eyes huge and locked on me.
I stood in the middle of the ship again and closed my eyes. My magick flashed hot inside me, and I used it to once again grab hold of the water’s magick. I clenched my fists and let the foreign magick fill me, feeling the pressure of it, the fluidness of the water, the refreshing and cool sensation. Then I opened my eyes and quickly grabbed a crystal from one of my pouches. It was small but it would serve for the task I gave it. I clasped the crystal between both hands and unleashed the spell with a focused word inside my mind. The spell latched onto the crystal and just as the beast reached us, intent on smashing the ship to pieces, the water suddenly shot upward, like a reverse waterfall.
A large column of water lifted the ship out of harm’s way and the tentacles of the beast slashed at the column as it roared in frustration. I made sure the ship reached a good height before locking the spell into the crystal. Spells only lasted if there was enough energy, or rather, magick, to sustain them. With crystals, I could hold the spell longer by pumping a predetermined amount of magick into them, turning the spell into an enchantment. I used such techniques for Geheimnis. I frequently had to recharge the crystals but it meant I didn’t have to consciously think about the spells anymore. They were very nearly freestanding. I used the same concept here but of a shorter extent. What I had planned wouldn’t take very long.
I ran to Aishe and pushed the crystal into his hands. “Hold onto this. It will keep you all airborne.”
“What are you doing?” Aishe made to grab me, but I had already leapt onto the rail, struggling to keep my balance.
“I’ll be right back,” I said.
“Morgorth—”
I took a deep breath before I dove off the rail. I locked my hands over my head and made sure my magick was bubbling right below the surface. The beast rose out of the water and opened its mouth. This was going to hurt.
“Mac, you can’t be serious.” Tasha looked at him. He definitely looked the part with his clothing and speech but that was impossible. “If he was really Dougal MacBride, he’d be 200 years old.
Look at him. He’s a thirty-year-old gym jock.”
“A what?” asked Dougal.
       “What if he is really from the past?” Mac lowered her voice and shrugged. “We wished for help and he showed up.”
Tasha glanced at Dougal. He did look like he belonged in this log cabin. “He can’t be.”
“You have to admit, he looks and sounds authentic enough.”
Every time she looked at him, Tasha wanted to push him onto the rope bed and ride the hell out of him. “So do people in the movies, but they aren’t real either.”
“’Tis rude to be talking about me while I’m standing in front of ye.” Dougal glowered at them.
Mac pulled Tasha to her feet and led her across the room toward Dougal. “Mr. MacBride, I’m Mackenzie Smith, Mac for short, and this is Tasha Banner.” She extended her hand to Dougal. “Pleased to meet you.”
Dougal glanced down at Mac’s hand but didn’t take it.
Mac dropped her hand to her side when he failed to grasp it. “We, Tasha and I, wished for the faeries to help us save the village museum and you walked through the door. The faeries have smiled on us this fine day.” “Mac stop,” said Tasha.
