Have you ever heard the term hate watching? I first heard it from my daughter Sarah. She was watching Restaurant Stakeout and Mystery Diners on Food Network, shows I cannot stand and which I know she doesn't like either. So why, I asked, are you watching them? "Hate watching", she said, and followed that up with, "Don't hate me, bro."
Hate watching. Finding yourself watching something because you can't help yourself not to do it, even though you ate it. What an excellent term, and how very descriptive of what I've been doing with Vampire Diaries for a while now.
When Vampire Diaries first began, I wasn't interested in watching, but a former friend convinced me
to give it a try, and there just happened to be a marathon going on, so I did just that - and immediately fell in love with Damon Salvatore.
He's handsome and sexy, and he has the most incredible blue eyes. And he's a vampire! What's not to love! I had already started to read the books, which I liked, and I realized immediately that major changes had been mind. Why, I don't know. Because the writers could? I've never understood why you like something, but feel the need to change the source material to something unrecognizable. That generally doesn't end well. It might work for a while, but sooner or later it fails. Look at True Blood and Dexter.
Let me state categorically that I have never liked Nina Dobrev as Elena, and she is a far cry from what the character was meant to be. Having said that, I preferred her to be with Stefan, and far away from Damon. I was not pleased when she left Stefan for Damon. I liked the unencumbered, bad boy, not the love-struck idiot he sometimes was.
One of my favorite scenes shows Damon doing a solo dance which was incredibly sex - right before he killed Vicki. I didn't care for her. Her brother Matt was a better character.
Over the few years I've been watching Vampire Diaries, it has decidedly gone downhill. Elena morphs from dead to vampire to alive in the blink of an eye. Stefan's stint as a Ripper - their term for a homicidal vampire who lives to kill - was ridiculous. What they did with Alaric, and the arc with his wife, was horrible. And Jeremy - I just wanted to kill him most of the time, especially doing his poor poor pitiful me periods. Bonnie.... not the same lovely girl as in the book, and often she was too judgmental for my taste, and although I like Caroline better, she had her moments. I liked when she slept with Klaus, whom I used to hate, but he grew on me. In fact, I like The Originals better than I do Vampire Diaries now. How sad is that?
The whole story arc with that ridiculous Kai (sp?) made me want to throw things at the TV, him and his awful family. And Alaric lost another girlfriend, this one pregnant. Tyler became a hybrid, and then not. Asshole and then... still asshole. Matt the asshole. Jeremy the asshole...
Where will it stop? Good grief. One day, I came to the realization, with the help of Sarah, that my continued watching of this show is ridiculous. After the end of the last season, where Elena goes into a deep slumber for maybe 60 years (although we know that won't happen, somehow she'll be brought back from that), I realized the next season will be filled with self-pitying Damon, and other stupid stuff.
The thought of watching that... well, I just can't do it.
So, although I love you, I'm letting you go. Be happy, Damon. The rest of you, I don't care what happens to you....
Rest in peace, Damon.

This week, Marshall and Lee continue with fun at the pond, having rid themselves of the wicked witch. Or have they? Come see what the boys are up to. Then visit the other Briefers to see what they've been working on! Their links follow my tale. Enjoy!
Don't Look Back #55 (10.4)
Marshall turned toward Lee. He dropped on all fours and
crawled across the blanket, swinging his hips in a seductive manner, growling
like a cat. He stopped in front of Lee and licked his lips, seeking
instructions with his eyes.
“Strip!” Lee commanded brusquely. His voice sent shivers
coursing through Marshall.
Marshall gauged there was two ways to go about this. Quickly
and efficiently. Or slowly and seductively, prolonging the moment with the
promise of paradise to come.
Judging by the gleam in Lee’s eyes, neither one was exactly
in a hurry. So seductive and slow became the obvious choice.
Rising to his knees, Marshall locked eyes with Lee. He
stretched both arms above his head, then reached one hand behind his back,
pulling at his shirt. Ever so slowly, he tugged it up his torso, undulating his
hips as he bared his skin, inch by inch. Finally, he pulled his shirt off,
swung it over his head a couple of times, then tossed it to the ground.
As he reached for his belt, Lee swooped in, took one of
Marshall’s nipples between his teeth and nipped. Marshall’s yelp was surprise
mixed with pleasure. Lee sucked the nub into his mouth, sending flames of
desire shooting to Marshall’s groin. The sensation only intensified when Lee
reached for the other nipple, closing it between his thumb and forefinger in a
gentle pinch.
If this was Lee’s idea of punishment, then bring it on!
Just as he thought he was going to explode, Lee pushed
himself back and regarded Marshall with a self-satisfied smirk. “Keep stripping,”
he instructed.
So that was how he was going to dole out punishment this
time—he was going to rev him up, get his motor running, then put him on hold again. Sneaky bastard he
was—and how Marshall loved the way his mind worked.
Well, two could play that game.
He unbuckled his belt and undid the button beneath, then
shimmied the zipper down just enough for the head of his cock to peep out.
Switching gears, he fell back onto his butt and toed off each boot, followed by
his socks. He teased his zipper down
just a little more, even though his cock was more than ready to be freed now.
Prolonged pleasure was all the sweeter for having had to wait. He’d learned
that from Lee.
Lee never said a word, but Marshall could read his enjoyment
in his eyes. He continued to lower the zipper even as he rose to his feet,
grinding his hips in a slow, sensual motion.
Finally, he pushed the fabric down his legs so his swollen cock could
spring free, then kicked the jeans aside, standing naked before Lee.
“Come over here, boy,” Lee said softly, and Marshall took
one step toward him, then another.
Lee wrapped one hand about Marshall’s erection, encompassing
his cock and balls, before he took Marshall into his mouth, devouring him to
the root. Marshall trembled in Lee’s grasp, his knees threatening to give away
before the intensity of the sensations that flooded him at Lee’s touch. He
caught himself and firmed his stance as Lee’s tongue circled and explored his
aching cock.
Marshall was too close to coming for comfort. He clenched
his cheeks, fighting the feeling that threatened to overwhelm him, drawing in
deep breaths, until he felt the tension drain away. At that moment, Lee removed his mouth, to
Marshall’s dismay. Lee scooted backward, then gained his feet and began his own
sultry strip tease.
Marshall watched in complete fascination as every bit of
Lee’s beautiful flesh was revealed, little by little, by the light of their
fire. He longed to reach for him, to let his fingers wander over the familiar
planes of Lee’s body. But he knew better, knew Lee would give him permission
when the time was right. Until then, he just needed to stand still and obey.
Once Lee had shucked all his clothes, he surprised Marshall
by pulling him close, their erections rubbing hungrily against one another.
What sort of torture had he devised now to keep Marshall panting and wanting
more?
“Punishment be damned,” Lee murmured throatily, “I want you
too much. Need you so much, always.” He claimed Marshall’s mouth, reigniting
the fire inside Marshall. They dropped together to the blanket, by mutual
accord, Lee on top, mouths still joined.
Marshall felt a whimper building in his throat. His whole
body ached to be filled by Lee, and Lee’s heartfelt words only served to stoke
the flames of his desire. This was their life, this was their love, and as far
as Marshall was concerned, it was perfect.
As if responding to Marshall’s need, Lee slid inside him in
one fluid motion, sheathing himself in Marshall’s heat. Marshall moaned,
tightened his muscles about Lee’s cock, receiving a reciprocal moan in return.
Lee continued to surprise Marshall. He’d expected hard and
fast, all things considered. But what he got was soft and gentle, and yet
utterly satisfying. Lee caressed
Marshall’s cheek, his hair, even as he established the rhythm of their familiar
dance, their bodies working in tandem.
“Finger me,” Lee whispered, and Marshall was more than happy
to obey. He wetted two fingers in his mouth before sliding his hand down Lee’s
back, caressing his firm cheeks, spreading them a little more before inserting
first one finger, then the other.
Lee responded with a shudder that vibrated his lean frame.
He reached between them, grasped Marshall’s cock, and began to pump it in sync
with his thrusts. They locked eyes in this perfect moment. Marshall could gaze
into Lee’s eyes forever, lost and yet found in Lee’s heart. He arched his back
as he came, Lee’s name on his lips. Moments later, Lee released inside
Marshall.
They collapsed together in a sweaty tangle of limbs. Lee
repositioned himself to ease his weight on Marshall. He kissed Marshall softly,
caressed his cheek. “You’re the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Virtual Book Tour: Claimed by Desire
Character
interview
Today we welcome
Aeron to the blog to tell us a bit about himself.
1) What do you find attractive in a man?
I
like rugged men. Guys who look like they make a living with their hands.
2) The first thing that went through your
head when you saw Dylan?
Honestly?
Wow! That was all that went through my head at first. Closely followed by some
pretty filthy thoughts. He was incredibly hot, but also had this really intense
charisma. He intimidated me but turned me on at the same time. It was actually
a pretty uncomfortable experience in some ways. I wasn’t used to feeling so overwhelmed
by a person, certainly not on first meeting them.
3) Do you think you’ll insist the author
visits you again?
I
bloody well hope she visits us again. We’ve got more stories to tell.
4) Before you met Dylan, what was your ideal
man?
I
had a fair few. Most of them people I would never, ever get to meet. I live in
a very small village in the mountains and so didn’t get chance to meet many
amazing men in real life. I did have a particular soft spot for Brad Pitt in
his Fight Club days.
5) You’re going out for dinner. What’s your
favorite food?
I
love all sorts of food. I’d find it hard to pick a favorite. I do like hearty
Welsh food, but I also love Asian food, and Italian. I have Italian heritage so
love to make and eat good Italian cooking.

Excerpt:
“Turn around.” Dylan’s low voice
echoed in the bathroom.
He did as instructed, skin goose
bumping in the chill air. Thick fingers touched either side of his torso and
gently pressed down into his lower back. “Does it hurt?”
He shook his head.
“Turn back around.”
He faced the front and watched as
Dylan moved large hands over his torso, gentle but firm. He pressed a little
more on the right hand side. “What about here? Hurt at all?”
“No.” He exhaled a shaky breath.
No matter how much he told his dick not to take interest in the proceedings, he
became more and more aroused at every touch.
Then Dylan did something so
strange it snapped him out of his fog of desire. The man leaned in towards
Aeron and sniffed him.
“Jesus.” Aeron took a step back,
butting up against the sink behind him. “Did you just smell me?”

Virtual Book Tour: The Luckiest
1) You’re
marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is
that person and what item do you have?
The person is my husband, who besides
being great company is also the best person I know. Nobody else would be able
to stand being around me when I was freaking out like I surely would be when
stranded away from air-conditioning and wifi, two of my great technological
loves.
I mean, assuming that we really are just
tragically out of range of signal: I am so unhappy at just the thought of this
(seriously: where are my kids? these are things I am thinking about) that I’m
going to be very practical and say that I have one of those giant, fuck-off
Swiss Army Knives, because between all of those tools, surely I can McGyver my
way out of this situation. (THIS IS NOT COOL.)
2) Which
musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that
musical are you?
Okay, my secret shame is that I don’t
generally see a lot of musicals - I’m a theatre person, but I prefer plays. So
I’m going to take a little liberty with this question, and say that movies made
in Bollywood traditions with a lot of music in them TOTALLY COUNT, especially
when a musical has apparently been made of them. (Which I didn’t even know
until I googled it, so bonus!)
I love love love the movie Monsoon
Wedding. I am not Indian and my marriage was not arranged, but I do have a big
family that’s kind of bananas, so there’s that. And the character of Ria is
very familiar to me - smart, wary, intellectual, passionate. I’m totally her,
only she has AMAZING hair. OK, yeah, that’s me, amazing hair and all.
3) Take
these three words and give me a 100 word or less scene using them: kiss, tragedy, road sign
The last kiss was spectacular, filled
with heat they hadn’t generated in months. It was all the other kisses over the
last few months that should have been the clue. Now each thoughtless one felt
like a warning, a road sign she could only read in her rear-view mirror, giving
her some indication of the emergency detour that was looming.
It’s what she was thinking when she
dropped her bag on the table: the tragedy of two weeks of lukewarm, distracted
kisses. Papers went flying and her two best friends scowled up at her until she
said, “Ivy dumped me.”
4) You’ve
just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you
want. Who do you fuck first and why?
Fitzwilliam Darcy. Easy-peasy.
Oh you want to know WHY? Have you not
seen any of those adaptations? Even the ones that don’t feature wet white
shirts?
He’s cranky and hot and repressed as
fuck. Also he looks like either Colin Firth or Matthew Macfadyen. So there’s
that.
5) What
is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?
Ha. Well, we’ve been married 22 years and
we have two teen-aged kids, so “romance” takes on a very different tint. I was
pretty sick last year and spent a lot of time in the hospital, and it was
honestly very romantic in its own very grownup way - we spent so much more time
talking in those weeks than we had in years, and I felt so close to him after
it was over. I mean, in terms of time that does not involve a hospital gown, my
idea of quality romantic time with him is really very similar - just a little
extra time with no real scheduled end to it, because besides loving him I still
like him very, very much. There is never enough time to spend doing nothing
with somebody you like that much.
6) When
you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
Of those two: a character. Really: I
start with a moment, either a single image or a perfectly delivered line. That
will usually tell me a lot about the kind of character(s) involved, and plot
goes from there. I write because of characters; plots to me are just things
that characters got themselves into because of their intense characteriness.
7) If
they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?
I have no idea. Let’s say Sarah Jessica
Parker, because a million years ago, people used to tell me I looked like her.
(I didn’t, but more than one person said it, so let’s go with that. Also, my
life isn’t particularly dramatic so I’m pretty sure she can carry it off.)
8) Who’s
your favorite horror villain and why?
Oh god, I hate horror movies so much!
Let’s say Hannibal Lecter, particularly as reinterpreted by Mads Mikkelsen,
because he is charismatic as fuck. (Although my first thought was Freddy
Krueger, because I was a child of the 80s and he scared the piss out of me.
Take your pick.)
9) Do
you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?
I really, really don’t; I like modern
masculinity, with a little more softness and tolerance for women who like to make
their own noise, thanks. However I am a big fan of crushes in every possible
port, so if readers want to use the comments to make suggestions, I am
currently advertising for an historical crush. Hit me!
10)Is
there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to
receive it?
Honestly? This is probably that story.
Look, there’s nothing revolutionary about
this story. It’s just two people sort of easing back into each other. But I
like my love stories a little quiet and largely internal, because I think it’s
the way so many of us fall in love - one elegant slide or clumsy tumble at a
time. But I do worry, because there’s no great dramatic turn in the story, and
we do love some great drama, don’t we? (I do too; drama is AWESOME. But so is
reality. OK I am still scarred by the first question.) We’ll see how it’s
received - I like it, it’s what I wanted to read and it’s what I wanted to
make, and I hope the world is ready for it!
This was really fun - thanks for having
me!

When New
York-based memoirist Aaron Wilkinson gathers with his high school friends to
marry off two of their own, he is forced to spend a week with Nik, the boy who broke
his heart.
As they settle
into the Texas beach house where the nuptials will be performed, Nik quickly
makes his intentions clear: he wants Aaron back. "He's coming hard,
baby," a friend warns, setting the tone for a week of transition where
Aaron and Nik must decide if they are playing for keeps.
Pages or Words: 256 pages
Categories: Contemporary, Gay fiction, M/M Romance, New
Adult, Romance
Excerpt:
Aaron finishes the song and Stephanie snatches the
mic out of his hand, crooks her finger at Nik and launches them into a reprise
of their performance of "Dancing on My Own" from the homecoming
weekend they all spent here at the house back in senior year. Stephanie still
has questionable rhythm and tragic pitch—she loves to sing, which is why they
have a karaoke machine in this house, but it's one thing she will admit she
doesn't have much of a gift for—but there's a reason Nik majored in music at The
University of Texas, and his voice has come a long way.
Somehow, this deliberate throwback to a memory that
was never anything but happy seems different than what Aaron has just done. He
sits on the sofa, flanked by Alex and Jasmine, hating them both a little for
participating in it even while he smiles. Nik dances—how can you not, with this song—but he still watches
Aaron, gives him a little head-tilt during the chorus, and it's charming and
devastating and infuriating.
Jasmine leans to murmur, "Oh, I see how it
is."
"Oh, shut up."
"You
might not be desperate, but I'm not sure about him. He's coming hard,
baby."

Dexter is Dead Review
Dexter
is Dead (Dexter #8)
Author: Jeff Lindsay
Publisher: Doubleday
American
release date: July 7, 2015
Format/Genre/Length: Hardback/crime/mystery/306 pages
Overall
Personal Rating: ★
Dexter finds himself incarcerated in a correctional facility,
ironically, for murders he did not commit. His wife, his girlfriend and future
meal ticket, as well the pedophilic actor who was putting the moves on Astor,
Dexter’s stepdaughter. It seems as
though everyone is against Dexter, and wishes to do him harm. Especially
Detective Anderson, whose sloppy attempts at manipulating evidence are
responsible for Dexter’s current predicament. Even his sister has turned her
back on him. Where is the so-called family loyalty demanded by the rules
according to Harry? Gone with the wind, apparently.
Assistance comes from an unusual source, his sociopathic
brother Brian, who arranges for a top-notch lawyer, who gains Dexter’s release.
Hooray! Except not. It seems Dexter has just stepped into a hornet’s nest of
Biblical proportions, and bodies seem to follow in his wake, ones he did not
cause. As if to compound matters, his children and Deborah’s son have been
kidnapped, and the race is on to rescue them before the kidnappers take out Dex
and Brian.
This is the last book in the series, and as such I felt
obligated to read it, despite having despised the one that came before. But…
O.M.G…. I want that time back, and to un-know what I just read.
I’m sorry but this book stunk to high heaven. It had long
stretches of super boredom, of Dexter’s deep introspection and what not, and
whereas I normally can enjoy such perambulations through the mind of Dexter,
this was off. Way off. It felt as though Lindsay forgot how to write Dexter
properly. Like he’d substituted a “margarine” Dexter for the “butter” version.
It may look similar, and taste somewhat close, but the composition is not the
same and leaves something to be desired.
I know Dexter enjoys his meals, but good Lord, he seems to
have become a real glutton in this one. Food tours? Seriously? And maybe that has to
do with his lack of employment, but I don’t think so. Not to mention, the
normally acute Dexter failed to pick up on clues that I got right off the bat,
like a certain vehicle that seems to be everywhere. And the time he caught his
lawyer speaking Spanish to someone over the phone. I know, in Miami, that’s not
suspicious. But under the circumstances, it is.
The only redeeming point, and for which I gave it the single
star I did (that and you can’t rate below a 1) are the scenes with Brian, which
I’ve longed for for some time. However, these don’t make up for the rest of the
book. Even characters such as Deb and Vince Masuoka are mere shades of their
normal selves.
And the ending…. Is beyond horrible. The title does say it
all, and believe it, he is. I’m glad. I wouldn’t want him to be embarrassed any
more than he must be at such an ending. Mr. Lindsay, I am ashamed of you for
permitting this to happen, and also, where is your editor, and why didn’t he or
she tell you how bad it really was, to save you from making such a mistake?
He/she did you a great disservice.
I know Dexter aficionados will read it for the same reasons
I did – because it’s Dexter, and Dexter is awesome, and for closure for the
series. Well, closure is all well and good, but boredom is another matter, and
indignation that one of my favorite serial killers should go out with a decided
whimper, when he should have had a bang.
My suggestion is to not read the book and remember Dexter
fondly.

After last week's showdown with Rhonda, Marshall and Lee are need of a little fun, down at the pond. Join them, why don't you? Then go see what the other Briefers are up to. Their links follow my tale! And be aware, there is a FLASH VIRGIN in our midst!
Don't Look Back #54 (10.3)
They’d ordered the sleeping bag from Cabelas. It was double
the size of a regular one, and could be broken down into two if the need arose.
But Marshall and Lee never slept apart. They appreciated the roominess the
larger bag afforded, but they always ended up snuggled tightly together when it
came time for sleep, Lee’s strong arms wound about Marshall like a security
blanket.
Still, the room was there if they ever wanted or needed it.
They fished for a while, throwing back whatever they caught.
They’d catch them again some other time; that wasn’t the reason they were
there. Afterward, Lee made a small fire. While the days were still warm, even
for December, the nights were colder, and a little extra heat never hurt.
Besides which, he’d promised Marshall he’d never have to sleep in the dark
again, and Lee was a man of his word.
After fishing, they spread out their blanket beneath the
jacaranda tree. It provided an extra cushion for the sleeping bag, and it
provided them a place to sit that wasn’t the ground. Lee retrieved the snacks
from the truck, tossed Marshall one of his then opened one of his own before
dropping down to sit beside him.
Marshall could hardly believe Christmas was almost upon
them. It had been one hell of a year, but at least the worst part was over.
“We still going to Milly’s Christmas Eve?” he asked.
“Don’t know why not,” Lee replied. “We go every year, don’t
we? Unless you don’t want to…?”
“No, I do, that’s cool. Just asking.”
The diner was just big enough to hold most of the residents
of Burnham on those occasions when they all got together at one time. Some
people weren’t able to make it because they visited out-of-town relatives over
the holidays. But those who could did, and it was a festive occasion for all,
and part of the reason they were such a tight knit community which didn’t take
well to outsiders. At least ‘til they got to know them. Marshall, Lee, and Roy
were a part of the town now. Marshall knew they wouldn’t miss this for the
world.
Much as Marshall enjoyed Christmas, shopping for Lee was
usually a chore since the man had just about everything he wanted or needed.
But this year, they’d reached a compromise on a joint gift of a new stereo
system. The one they had was a little outdated. And they did love their music.
Lee had hinted theremight be something else for Marshall under the tree this
year. Marshall told him if that something else was a naked Lee he’d be more
than happy. Lee only smiled like a damn Cheshire cat and refused to say another
word.
“Think we can go back to Partners some time?” Marshall
reached for his beer, took a good long drink.
“Sure, why not? You’re not worried about going back, are
you?”
“No, it’s not that,” Marshall admitted, “but after the whole
YouTube thing and all… I wasn’t sure, you know?”
Lee shrugged. “The worst that could happen already did. She
knows where we are now, so that’s out in the open. No one else knows or cares.
We still have friends there, don’t we? And we have a good time.”
“Yeah, we do,” Marshall agreed. “I’m glad you still want to
go. I do too.”
“Then that’s it, we’ll go.” Lee pulled Marshall closer and
kissed him, and silence reigned while they let their tongues do the talking.
They drew apart with satisfied smiles.
Marshall set his chips aside, his appetite for food momentarily
sated. He hungered for something else now. Lee had just got his motor started,
and he was eager to get a lot more of what he’d been promised when they decided
to come out here.
When Lee reached into their bag, he grinned in anticipation,
assuming Lee was going after the lube. But that didn’t happen. When he pulled
out a deck of cards instead, Marshall gave him an indignant are-you-kidding
look.
“What?” Lee feigned innocence.
“I didn’t think we came down here to play cards, did we?”
“What else did you have in mind?” Lee’s grin was downright
lascivious. He ate a pretzel then proceeded to lick the salt from his lips.
Marshall felt his cock respond to the sight.
Damn, he wanted to play cards? Now?
“I thought we’d climb into our sleeping bag and get naked
and fuck.” He was getting hornier by the second, just thinking about Lee’s cock
inside of him. How long was Lee going to make him suffer?
“Weeelll, I dunno.”
Lee pretended to think about the idea, which only served to heighten
Marshall’s lust. On a hunch, he brushed his hand across Lee’s lap and was
satisfied to note he was every bit as hard as Marshall. So he was toying with
him. Well, two could play that game.
“Well, that’s okay. We don’t have to if you don’t want to.”
He pulled his hair free from the tail he’d tied it in, letting it flow over his
shoulders in an auburn wave. He shook his head for good measure. He knew damn
well what effect that had on Lee. “Maybe I’ll do a little more fishing….” He
rolled to his knees and wiggled his ass before he edged his way to the end of the
blanket. At the sound of Lee’s voice, he froze.
“Did I give you permission to do that, boy?”
His back to Lee, Marshall broke into a shit-eating grin. Now
they were getting somewhere. God, he loved it when Lee took control. Maybe they
weren’t the traditional dom and sub like he’d read about in some books he’d
found online, but whatever they were, he liked them that way and didn’t want to
change who they were.
“No, sir,” he replied quickly.
“Then you better get your ass back here so’s I can decide on
your punishment.”
“Yes, sir!”
