Cover Reveal: The PInch of the Game

Author Name: Charley Descoteaux

Book Name: The Pinch of the Game

Release Date: June 24, 2015
Blurb:

Being a witch doesn’t mean one can beat the devil forever.

Jeffrey Overton, unemployed IT professional turned poker player, pushes his luck once too often and runs afoul of the host of an illegal card club. The man sent to escort Jeffrey to a “meeting” about his supernatural winning streak arrives at Jeffrey’s crappy North Portland apartment, lock-picking tools in hand and a charm to block Jeffrey’s magick.

Head muscle for said host, Mike Wells, is a Daisy from Daisyville. He isn’t a witch. What he lacks in magickal talent he makes up for in brawn, so he doesn’t expect the guy he’s after to overpower him. But once Mike renders Jeffrey helpless, he’d rather seduce him than bring him in.

Jeffrey and Michael ditch the “meeting” and end up hunting some of the same people they ran from, trying to get Jeffrey back into his own body. And that’s only part of the adventure. The pair travel halfway across the country on the quietest road trip in history and find missing people, empire-building witches, and maybe even the families they’d both thought lost to them.

Excerpt:
If Sal had sent someone after me, a short trip up to Seattle might be a good idea, maybe even BC. That called for some new clothes, so I grabbed my battered gym bag—my quick escape kit—and was almost home free when the kitchen door burst open. It would’ve been dumb to turn off the light when the goomba first went to work on the lock—I can’t see any better in the dark than your average Daisy, not when I’m blocked. Once that massive body filled the doorway, I wished I had. Wished I’d done something.
He hesitated, barely a moment, and I bolted for the front door. He grabbed me before I made it out of the kitchen and pinned both of my arms to my sides. It wouldn’t work, I knew that, but I still tried to burn his hands. All I needed was enough time to—fuck, is he laughing?
“Give it up, pretty boy. You’re blocked.”
The big man pushed me against the wall face-first and pulled both hands behind my back.
“Hey, wait a sec, big guy. Let’s talk about this. I can—”
He pushed me flat against the wall, and the rest of that sentence disappeared in the rush of air he squeezed from my lungs. I couldn’t help being turned on, even though pain and domination usually aren’t my thing. Neither are bears, but underneath the padding he felt nice and solid, leaning full against me. He tightened a plastic zip tie around my wrists with shaking hands. And then he held me there.

Excerpt:
Asher Riots unlocked the door to Everlasting, the salon he had worked at since arriving in the Sunshine State.
Normally the blazing sun wasn’t a vampire’s best friend, but after spending a hundred plus years in the northern United States, it was time for balmy breezes to warm his chilled skin, and soft, sandy beaches to tread on when the moon was full and high in the night sky, no matter what the season.
Stepping through the threshold, he inhaled the distinctive scents of the salon that made his senses tingle with excitement. The familiar smells of the hairsprays, gels, and lotions made him thankful that he had chosen this profession before he became what he was today, a member of the undead. His parents had coiffed the elite of Paris society, and their talents and attention to detail had been passed on to their son who possessed the same talents it took to excel in the beauty industry.
But times and styles had changed, leaving Asher longing for the days of platinum powdered wigs worn by courtesans, instead of bold, garish colors embraced by America’s youth. Releasing a sigh, he flipped on the neon Open sign that hung in the window. Looking out onto the street, he noticed that the barbershop across the way was still closed. Although attractive, the barbers were bad news, and they attracted similar clientele that made Asher’s skin crawl, but excited his lust for rough trade. He never admitted this to his boss, Jerrod, but Tory, his co-worker, suspected as much, judging by the smirk on his glossed lips whenever he caught Asher gazing at the comings and goings of the barbershop during the slow periods at the salon. Tory liked to play dumb, but he was anything but. Asher suspected that Tory preferred it that way because less would be expected of him. He was only fooling himself. Jerrod would never have hired the twink with a penchant for all things shiny, if he believed that was true. Jerrod only took on vampires who showed potential. And if that potential wasn’t realized, they’d be asked to leave. Many had passed through the doors of Everlasting, but only Asher had withstood the test of time.
“They’re in there.” Jerrod strutted through the door on a gust of wind, his deep baritone reverberating in Asher’s chest. “Can’t you smell them?”
“I can smell something, all right,” Asher mumbled under his breath before turning to see the man who had saved him from his own self-loathing when he arrived in Sangre, Florida, years ago. “And it smells like someone is wearing too much cologne.” Asher eyed his friend’s black-from-head-to-toe outfit. It was very hairdresser. And very vampire.
“Funny,” Jerrod grumbled, shooting a look at Asher. “I can sense something’s up but I can’t figure out what, exactly. Have you heard any tongues wagging in the street?”
“Nope,” Asher returned. “But I don’t usually listen to gossip. Ask Tory. He’d know if there is anything to know.”
Jerrod chuckled. “He’s late,” he said without looking at the clock on the wall. “What are we going to do about that guy?”
Just then, the man in question swished through the door, his strut better than any super model’s. “Are you two talking about me again?” Tory made it to the middle of the salon and twirled. “What do you think? It was a gift from an admirer.”

Wednesday Briefs: Don't Look Back #46 (9.3)

Happy Wednesday, everyone! Hump Day, already? Well, that must mean it's time for some flash fiction from the Wednesday Briefers, authors who write weekly tales between 500 and 1000 words, inspired by one of our prompts!

This week, in Don't Look Back, Marshall's memory continues, as he spills his heart to Lee, while he wonders if Lee loves him the same way too?  Don't forget to check out what the other Briefers are up to. Their links follow my tale. Enjoy!

Don't Look Back #46 (9.3)

“Wh-why not?” Marshall’s heart beat painfully, and he had to fight against the tears that threatened.

“Because… we just… there’s things…”

Marshall had never seen Lee look as flustered as he did at that moment. His cheeks were flush, and his eyes were filled with something Marshall couldn’t identify. At first, he thought it might be horror at the idea, and his heart clenched. But then he rethought that idea, and decided that saying no was causing Lee pain. Which only fed his notion that Lee wanted him too.

“What things, Lee? I don’t understand.” Marshall pushed, even as he scooted a little closer to Lee, close enough to feel the warmth of Lee’s breath on his skin. He heard Lee’s breath hitch, watched him struggle to regain control of himself. Marshall unabashedly took advantage of the moment to kiss Lee again, at the same time, placing his hand on Lee’s hip.

He felt Lee’s response, heard him moan, and he didn’t push Marshall back near as quickly as he had the first time. “I said we can’t,’ Lee repeated in a stricken voice.

“You want me, I know you do,” Marshall persisted. “Same as I want you. Want me to pull back the blanket? I bet the proof is there, for both of us.” He knew his cock was hard. He suspected Lee’s was the same, or he wouldn’t be fighting so hard. Why was he fighting?

“You’re young… you’re… confused,” Lee said. “It’s a… it’s just a crush, that’s all. It happens. Nothing wrong with that. In time, you’ll get over it. Fall in love with someone. And then you’ll look back, and you’ll know… well, you’ll understand, once you find the right woman—”

“Don’t want a woman.”

“Well then, right man.”

“Don’t want any other man. I want you, Lee. Only you. I love you, Lee.”

“I love you too, Marshall, always have—”

“I’m in love with you, Lee. I realize that now. I know the difference between infatuation and love.”

“You haven’t been around long enough to know that.”

“I know what my heart says.”

Lee made no immediate response, and Marshall pressed his advantage. He leaned in and rubbed his nose against Lee’s in an Eskimo kiss. He pressed himself against Lee, and his heart rejoiced when he felt confirmation of his suspicion—Lee was just as hard as he was. Their cocks brushed against one another, and an electric zing zipped through Marshall at the contact. He instinctively began to rub against Lee, wanting to feel more.

“Oh Jesus fuck,” Lee moaned. “For the love of God, Marshall, don’t do that. Please. You’re killin’ me here.”

Marshall drew back, reluctantly, his eyes searching Lee’s. “Don’t you love me?” he murmured.

“Of course I love you, I told you so—”

“Not like that. You know what I mean. Tell me you don’t love me the same way I love you. As a man. As a lover.”

Long agonizing seconds passed between them, and Marshall began to fear he wouldn’t get a response, but at long last, Lee’s lips parted, and he said, so softly Marshall wasn’t sure he heard him, “Yes, I do.”

Marshall thrilled to those words, all his previous apprehensions washed away at the knowledge of Lee’s love. All was right with his world once more. With a growing confidence, he claimed Lee’s lips again, and this time, Lee returned the kiss for a fraction of a second longer before putting a halt to it.

“Marshall, you don’t understand—”

“Sure I do. I love you, you love me, what else is there to understand?”

“Society, for one….”

“Fuck society.”

Lee arched an eyebrow but he let the language pass without comment.

“You and me… we’re different. I mean, it’s hard enough for two men, but for us… it’s almost impossible….”

“I don’t care. I just want to be with you. I want you to make love to me.”

“Marshall, please listen to me. You’re only fifteen. You’ll change, that’s only natural. What you think you want now won’t be what you want a month from now, six months from now. And certainly not ten years from now.”

“Nothing’s going to change,” Marshall said with confidence. “I will always love you, and you’ll always love me, right?” He raised his hand to Lee’s face, traced the strong jawline. Unexpectedly, Lee reached for his hand, held the fingertips to his lips and kissed each one.

“God forgive me, but I love you very much,” Lee admitted. “I love the man you’ve become. You’re everything to me.”

“Then make love to me?” Marshall resumed his rubbing against Lee. He wanted Lee in the worst possible way. He couldn’t wait.

“No. Roll over right this minute, Marshall Clinton, or you’ll find yourself sleeping in your own room so fast it’ll make your head spin.”

Marshall knew Lee wasn’t playing, and he meant what he said, so he quickly rotated until he was facing away from Lee, but he was still close enough to feel Lee’s erection poke him in his ass.

“Marshall, listen to me. I know this is new to you, and it’s damn well new to me too, and frankly, I’m not sure what in hell to do. But I do know one thing. You’re fifteen goddamn years old, and I sure as hell am not going to commit anything that even slightly resembles statutory rape. Is that clear?”

“Yes, sir,” Marshall replied. His head was spinning, and he felt euphoric, ecstatic, and on top of the fucking world happy.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to be with you… in that way. I refuse to lie to you. Ever. Now roll back over and look at me, but keep your hands to yourself.” Marshall quickly obeyed.

“I can’t swear what the future holds, but I do know this. There will be no lovemaking until you turn eighteen. Got it?”

“Yes, sir. Got it.”

Marshall decided he could wait.

Top Ten Tuesday #5: Ten Sci Fi Books I really love

Happy Tuesday! It's time for the Top Ten Tuesday countdown!

This week, we are free to choose our own topic, so I choose Top Ten Sci Fi books I really love, in no particular order.

1.  Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov - Yes, I know it's three books, hush. Of these books, my favorite character remains the Mule. He is very complex, and very tragic.

2. From the Earth to the Moon and a Trip Around It by Jules Verne - They made a movie out of this with Joseph Cotton, bu the book is much better. The plot is quite simple. It's about a man who builds a spaceship that can travel from the Earth to the Moon. But it's very interesting.

3. Mysterious Island by Jules Verne - Another movie, this one's better. Takes place during the Civil
War, with Confederate soldiers who escape from a Yankee prison using a hot air balloon and end up on an island with all sorts of strange creatures. And then there's Captain Nemo, for good measure, played in the film by Herbert Lom.

4. Breeding Stations by Chris T. Kat - Technically, this isn't out yet, but I've read it, so I'm counting it. It's the story of Berit, who might be a bit loose with his cock, but he has a good heart. He ends up on a mission with his best friend Carson and some aliens, called Nadisc, and meets Tom and Niyara. They end up on a planet with some vicious war beasts that resemble dinosaurs - but worse. I've read the second book too. Both are well worth reading, fast-paced, as well as erotic!

5.  Titan, Wizard, Demon by John Varley - Yes, that's three books, but they belong together, so I'm listing them together. Sirocco Jones is the commander of a space ship that crashes on the planet Gaea, along with her best friend Gaby. They have no idea what's in store for them. This is so imaginative, especially the race known as the Titanides, and their complex system of inter-breeding. If you enjoy sci fi, you'll enjoy these books.

6.  Dune series by Frank Herbert - All the books are good, but my favorite is God-Emperor Dune. It begins when the Atreides family arrives on the planet Arrakis - Duke Leto, his son Paul, and his wife, the Lady Jessica, who is a Bene Geserit witch. They are there to mine spice for the Emperor (the spice is the life!). Unfortunately, mining melange is not as easy as it sounds. Much of the world is desert, inhabited by giant sand worms, and the people known as the Fremen. If this doesn't sound like enough trouble, throw in the House Harkonnen, under the evil Baron and his two nephews, Beast Rabban and Feyd-Rautha, a trusted friend whose imperial conditioning has been broken, and a gola, and... well, read it for yourself. I also recommend the version of the film featuring Kyle McLachlan, which features Brad Dourif as Pieter deVries and Kenneth McMillan as Baron Harkonnen

7. The Harvest by M.A. Church - There are two books in this series. It has to do with an alien race that comes unexpectedly to earth because they have a problem. The Tah'narians are no longer able to reproduce. They need DNA from Earth men in order to do so. Earth's leaders agree to help by holding a lottery. Those chosen, between certain ages, will go to Tah'Nar, donate their DNA and come home. Well, it doesn't work like that as Dale finds out. He should have been safe, because he's under age, but as he finds out, he's not. He's wanted by the Tah'Narian starship captain Keyno. This book is full of sex and romance and the second book has mpreg. 'Nuff said lol

8. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams - A classic hilarious set of novels (I'm including all of them), about Arthur Dent, who only wants to keep his house from being knocked down but ends up going on an intergalactic adventure with his friend Ford Prefect. The plot has to be read to be believed. One of my favorite characters is the two-headed Zaphod Beeblebrox. I loved the BBC series, the movie not quite as much, but it's worth watching.

9. The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury - A fascinating collection of short stories that all revolve around Mars, and manage to weave a story among them. The stories run the gamut from funny to sad and everything in between. My favorite is the House of Usher. Yes, just like the Poe story. Classic collection, could never get tired of reading this.

10. Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke - A race of aliens known as the Overlords peacefully take over the Earth and lead mankind into believing it's for their own good. Makes you think. A lot.

I know I have left books out, but hey, I could only name ten, right? Otherwise I might mention Sandman by Neil Gaiman or Neuromancer by William Gibson or Watchmen by Alan Moore or Frankenstein by Mary Shelley or all kinds of stuff by Kurt Vonnegut, or Stephen King, H.G Wells... well, you get the picture.

Excerpt:
“The choice is yours, boy, but understand—not deciding is making a decision. Do it before I make the decision for you. Only difference is, I won’t kill one, I’ll kill them both. Father or sister. You have allthe power.”
Roth kept his tone calm and gentle. The evil coiled tightly within warmed his soul. He fancied the boy killing his father, silently rooting for the infant to survive. He could have lots of fun with her over the coming years.
The boy’s father would die either way. He’d bound and beaten him just for fun.
“Daddy? What do I do?” Tears streamed down Dylan’s face, sobs racked his entire nine-year-old battered frame. His gaze slid from his father to his baby sister, now held by Roth. When he looked back at his dad’s bruised and bloodied face, he cried harder. His dad’s eyes were swollen almost shut.
The gun shook uncontrollably in the boy’s small hand. “Daddy?”
Boredom shadowed his mind as the excitement of the climax dimmed with the child’s indecisiveness. His gaze wandered out the window above the kitchen sink.
In the back yard, a massive, wooden play structure stood, complete with swings, tunnels, overhead ladder, and a slide. How extravagant for just two children, one still an infant. His sister always belabored the little things. Shame she’s not present to witness this. He would’ve found this even more amusing.
The blond haired infant cradled roughly in his left arm actually cooed at him. Disgusting. If he kept this thing, he'd have to hire a nanny. Still, the thought of it growing up with half the powers his sister enjoyed years ago made the brat worth the trouble...If she survived today. He sighed.

* * * *
“Dylan, son, it's okay. You’re going to be all right. Look at me. Remember how we played catch this morning? When you think of me, you’ll remember how we played ball today. Okay, son?”
What else could he say in this horrific situation? His own psychotic brother-in-law was forcing Dylan to commit the most heinous act imaginable, choose between patricide and sororicide. Roth had always been the canary in the crazy mind but even Devon hadn’t seen this coming.
“Awww, isn’t this touching?” Roth muttered, no doubt weary of his twisted game. “What a little wimp. I’m growing tired of your indecision, boy. I think I’ll just slice this little bitch’s throat. After all, she’d probably just grow up to be a carbon copy of her mother, stubborn and willful. Wouldn’t want more of that in the world, would we?”
“Noooo, please. Please don’t hurt her! She’s just a baby.” Facing where he knew his son to be by the sound of his sobbing stifled his thoughts. “Son, I know this is the hardest thing you’ll ever do, but you must. Please. It’s all right. I love you more than anything.”
Dylan retched, fumbling and almost dropping the Glock 9mm pistol. It probably felt like the heaviest thing he’d ever held, certainly his first time holding a gun.
His small frame trembled, tears streamed from his eyes, hair matted to his face. Red, swollen tissue marred the right side of his face, the result of Roth’s cold temper. The kitchen table supported his slight weight as he leaned one forearm on its edge.
“Roth, please don’t do this. He’s just a boy. Be the sniveling coward you’ve always been. Do it yourself.” Articulation was slurred through split and bloody lips. His tongue slipped between the gap of two missing teeth.
Though partially open, his right eye refused to focus properly. Warm, wet liquid traced a path down his face. Gravity would always trump decency. Blood splattered his clothes. Patches of gray clouded the edges of his vision. Unconsciousness lumbered near. The drumming in his head kept pace with his rapid-fire pulse. No child should ever see his father this way, unable to protect his family. Even if his son survived Roth, which he began to doubt, he'd be scarred for life.
“Oh, Devon, Devon, Devon. You just don’t get it, do you? I’m not a coward,” Roth admonished. “I have no qualms about ending any of your lives. Watch, let me demonstrate.” His patronizing voice oozed in the air like oil spreading over water to corrupt with its filth. Roth pulled the six-inch blade from its sheath at his waist and held it to the baby’s throat, who lay cuddled in the crook of his left arm.
“No, don’t. You bastard!” Devon strained at the rope binding his hands behind his back. “Dylan, listen. Take the family crest ring off my finger. Go ahead, son, take it. It’s yours. It’s our coat of arms.” Twisting sideways forced the bonds to cut his wrists as he removed the ring from fingers slick with blood.
When his son took it, he realized these would be his last words to his boy. “Put it in your pocket, you can get a chain for it until you’re grown. That ring is a symbol of your strength, son, a symbol of your commitment to do whatever’s necessary to protect your family. Remember this, Dylan.” Dear God, he'll have nightmares the rest of his life...if he survives.

Of the many lessons life seems intent on throwing her way; the most important one Shyla’s learned is to take the time to enjoy family and friends. The flux and flow of changes aren’t something to fight, but adapt to with the best of your ability. One day’s heartbreak is often followed by another day’s triumph. My Sexy Saturday - When Will I Be Loved

This week's theme is Sexy Forever. What does that bring to mind? Eternal loves? Eternal lives? Eternal flames? Maybe all of the above!

This week  I'm giving an excerpt from my soon-to-be released novel, When Will I Be Loved, which comes out on June 7th, from Amber Quill. It's the sequel to When Will I See You Again.

In this scene, Holt is the vampire in question, while Miller is quite human. But together, they combust. Enjoy!

He could feel Holt visibly relax, as if he’d been unsure of Miller’s reaction. Miller realized Holt wasn’t near as tough as he let on he was. He was reminded what Sarah had said to him—“He has a heart as big as the universe.” Never had true words been spoken.

“You’re everything to me, Miller. I want to spend eternity showing how just much I love you.” He pressed their lips together, and everything else became immaterial in the face of their love. Miller felt a flame inside of him flare to life with the mere touch of Holt’s body against his. He wanted to lose himself in that flame and feel it grow.

“Car...” he murmured into Holt’s mouth.

“What...?”

“Car. Let’s go to the car. Now.” He rubbed himself against Holt, felt a quickening response in Holt’s body, felt his cock begin to harden. “Right now,” he repeated, looping a leg about Holt’s and pressing against him even more tightly, with a growing urgency.

Holt slid his hands beneath Miller’s ass. Lifting him easily, he retraced their steps through the trees, never releasing Miller’s mouth until they found themselves standing beside the sedan. Holt reached for the door handle, but Miller grabbed his wrist.

“No. Right here. Take me here. I don’t want to wait.” He crushed their lips together, his hand snaking between them. He felt Holt’s erection, felt its fullness. He wanted that... inside of him. In the worst possible way.

Tony wheeled the chair down the long ramp to the beach, hoping it wasn't too hot or too cold for Jake's skin.

The day itself was wonderful, the clearest in weeks, and the Pacific Ocean waves pounded the beach in a steady, soothing rhythm that he hoped even Jake could hear.

Soon they were on level ground, negotiating the boardwalk that ran up and down this part of the beach. Jake had a sloppy smile on his face.

Tony smiled to himself. There were so few pleasures he could give Jake anymore. The man deserved so much more than this.

He reached forward to wipe the drool from the side of Jake's cheek. "It's a lovely day out, isn't it, Jake?"

His lover didn't respond, but only stared ahead, smiling.

There were still periods of lucidity, to be sure, but they were farther and farther apart. Sometimes Tony wished that Jake would finally succumb to the growth in his head and be at peace. But only sometimes.

More often, he treasured the time they still had together and remembered the strong, vital man Jake had been when they'd first met.

For just a moment, the rest of the world faded away, and they were alone together on a quiet, windswept beach. Tony breathed in deeply, savoring the pure sweetness of the salty ocean air, the wash of clean colors that assaulted his vision.

He glanced up at the road above, only to find it was gone. There were no other people on the bluff, no buildings, nothing. They were alone, really alone, in this little corner of the world.

Tony shook his head to dispel the vision. It was the late nights, he thought, the lack of sleep that led to these strange imaginations.

A hand came down on his shoulder. Hard. And suddenly they were back among the bustle of a thousand other people.
