The Body on the Beach Review

The Body on the Beach

Author: L.J. LaBarthe
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
American release date: March 12, 2013
Format/Genre/Length: E-book/M/M Historical/Mystery/83 pages
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★

In early twentieth century Australia, same-sex relationships are not acceptable, and must remain hidden. William ‘Billy’ Liang is a respectable Adelaide businessman, the head of his family, and the elected spokesman for the Chinese community in Adelaide. He lives with his wife, Hui Zhong, and his lover, Tom Williams. Luckily for Billy, Hui Zhong is accepting of Billy’s relationship with Tom. To the outside world, Tom is Billy’s lawyer and friend, but within the Liang household, he is much more.

When the body of a man washes up on Brighton Beach, a Chinese symbol carved into his torso, Billy and Tom are asked to look into the matter. This has the potential of damaging relations between the Chinese and the Australians, which could spell trouble for the whole community. Billy and Tom take on the challenge of solving the murder and keeping things on an even keel.

This is my first time reading this author, but it won’t be the last. The Body on the Beach, while a mystery, is primarily an historical story—a slice of life look at the social structure in early 1900s Australia, and how two men who love each other are forced to live in order to maintain the illusion in front of society that they are not a couple. The murder is almost secondary besides watching these men interact under the watchful eye of judgmental people.

I loved the loving relationship they have with Billy’s wife, who makes their being together possible by her acceptance of them within the framework of their marriage. More importantly, she considers them her family and loves them both.

Great research has obviously been done on the people and the times and it shows. It was like stepping back in time. I feel sorry for Billy and Tom, that they are forced to hide their love, and will always have to. But I was glad they found a way to be together, which is more than a lot of gay men got to do back then.

If you like history, try this one. The mystery is an added bonus. Mostly, this is a story about the endurance of love.

Tease Me Thursday #28 - Don't Look Back

Happy almost Friday! Time to let loose and have a little fun, the weekend's almost here. Ready to be teased?

This week I'm giving you 7 sentences from my current flash fiction, Don't Look Back. Warning: this contains a mature theme, and a taboo subject.

Marshall and Lee live together in a small town in Texas. Marshall is Lee's son. They love one another very much.

As Lee thrust inside of him, Marshall pushed back. Their skin slapped together wetly, and the vibrations radiated outward, consuming Marshall in their intensity, wave after wave of pleasure that threatened to break, like waves upon a shore. He dug his hands into the grass, determined not to come. Not yet.

“Fuck, your ass is hot,” Lee moaned. “Sweet and tight. So tight.”

Wednesday Briefs: Don't Look Back Chapter Fourteen (3.4)

Happy Hump Day to one and all and welcome to another edition of the Wednesday Briefs, flash fiction brought to you by the friendly authors known as the Briefers! Get your flash fiction fix here! Hope everyone's having a great week! Hard to believe it's Hump Day already! Hold on to your seats, and get ready for some flash fiction!

As you'll recall from last week, Marshall and Lee are having a night out in nearby Tucker Falls, with their friend, Sheriff Roy. Last week, they ran into a few other friends. This week, Marshall and Lee are having a little private time in one of the back rooms. Don't forget to see what the other Briefers are up to. Their links follow my tale. Enjoy!

Don't Look Back #14 (3.4)

They exited the dance floor and made the short trip to the back area in record time. There was a code of sorts that was used to determine the availability of the rooms. It was a simple system. Colored plastic cards were hung on the door knob—red, green, and purple. The one on top determined the occupancy of the room. Green meant no one was inside. Red meant ‘stop, the room’s in use’, while purple meant ‘yeah, someone’s in there, but company’s welcome’. That was for the more adventurous souls who enjoyed sex with more than one person at a time. Everyone was on their honor to use the cards, and there’d never been a problem with it so far.

They passed the first couple of doors which displayed red cards. Lee stopped in front of one that sported a purple tag and reached for the knob. Marshall let out an indignant whoop without thinking. Lee turned to face him with a shit-eating grin.

“Could someone possibly be jealous?”

Marshall noted with chagrin the amusement in Lee’s eyes. He scuffed at the floor with his boot, debating a suitable response, before he blurted out, “Yeah, I guess that’d be me. “

Lee made no immediate reply. He took Marshall’s hand, leading him farther down the hall until they found a door with a green card on top. He switched the card to red before they entered the room and closed the door.

Then he pushed Marshall up against the door and claimed his lips, sucking Marshall’s lower lip into his mouth. Releasing him, he murmured, “You don’t need to be jealous. You’re the only one I look at. You’re the only one I see.”

Marshall warmed at his words. He knew Lee wouldn’t lie to him.

“I’ll never leave you,” Lee promised. “I told you that when we found you. I meant it then, and I mean it now. You and me, boy. Always.”

He reclaimed Marshall’s mouth, and their tongues met in a glorious union of flesh. Marshall knew what happened hadn’t been Lee’s choice or his fault. But every once in a while, he just needed a little bit of reassurance.

The décor of the room was simple. A single bed, nothing fancy, but the sheets were changed on a fairly regular basis, more than you got in some motels. A small wooden side table, if you needed to lay out a few things. Two or three chairs, in case of voyeurs. Each room was BYOL—Bring Your Own Lube, as well Bring Your Own Rubber. There were machines in the men’s room that dispensed those, so there was no excuse for coming up short.

Marshall and Lee had never used condoms. They were exclusive with one another, always had been and always would be.

Lee already had his hands at Marshall’s waist. He undid his fly and pulled down the zipper, freeing Marshall’s leaking erection. Marshall toed off his new boots and shimmied his hips as Lee pulled the cords down his legs, before kicking them out of the way. His fingers were already working the buttons of the black shirt then it joined the rest of his clothes on the floor.

Lee undressed quickly. When they were both naked, he gestured toward the bed.

“Hands and knees,” he directed, and Marshall obeyed.

Marshall knew just how far apart to spread his knees, how to wriggle his ass in an enticing fashion. Lee’s hand crashed against first one buttock, then the other, leaving heat in its wake.  The bed dipped under Lee’s weight, the springs creaking their protest. No telling how many bodies had done this exact same thing many times before. Partners was a popular place, both with men who needed a quick place to hook up, as well as couples who liked to be adventurous without having to go home to do it.

“Head down, boy,” Lee admonished.

Marshall had been daydreaming; his fault entirely. He dropped his head into the proper position and accepted another swat to each cheek as penance for his inattention. He loved the structure of Lee’s love, although the rules weren’t always rigidly enforced. Just most of the time. And it was all done with love.

Air hit Marshall’s pucker as Lee parted his cheeks. He shivered at the coolness of Lee’s breath as he blew across Marshall’s entrance. Apparently, he’d been eating something minty, and the sensation was both startling and intense. Marshall shivered as Lee’s tongue lapped at the sensitive skin of his perineum, licking at the underside of his balls as they hung down between his legs.

His cock ached from inattention, but he didn’t dare reach for it. That was so against the rules.
Although he might, if he got horny enough, just to see what Lee would do about it. Might be fun.

Lee’s tongue was doing the most amazing things to Marshall’s hole, dipping and sucking, but there was more to come. Marshall knew it, and he needed it. Needed Lee inside of him. Soon.

He tried to curb his impatience, but the moan he inadvertently released was heartfelt.

Lee ceased his ministrations, leaning along Marshall’s back until his breath was warm in Marshall’s ear, his cock nestled securely between Marshall’s cheeks.

“Tell me what you want, baby,” Lee whispered seductively, his voice sending delicious shivers ranging through Marshall from his fingers to his toes.

It didn’t matter where they fucked, or how often they fucked, Lee continued to take Marshall’s breath away on a constant basis.

“Want you, Lee,” Marshall moaned. “Need you inside of me.”

Lee grasped Marshall’s cock and pumped it. “You want me to fuck you hard?” he teased. “Want my cock inside your hot ass, do you?”

“With all my heart.” Marshall bucked into Lee’s hand. He tried not to whimper, but he was quickly losing control.

to be continued

Now see what the other Briefers are up to!

Valley of Shadows Review

Valley of Shadows

Author: Phoenix Emrys
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
American release date: July 23, 2010
Format/Genre/Length: E-book/M/M Paranormal Romance/290 pages
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★

Ellery Joyce James is a literary success—copies of his latest bestseller are flying off the shelves. His exuberant agent Max—short for Maxima—is dying to know what Ellery is working on now, but he isn’t talking. Largely because he hasn’t started it yet, something he’s not about to share with Max.

Max nags at Ellery to get a bodyguard, but he is adamantly against the idea. He’s moved from New York to the small town of Birchwood, having been left a huge house there in someone’s will. He prefers his solitude, even if Max does think the former bed & breakfast is a monstrosity. But it suits Ellery just fine, for many reasons.

Ellery has a rather unique talent that no one suspects—he can see and communicate with the dead. Which makes it difficult for him to go out in the world—there are so many of them, it’s rather overwhelming. In Birchwood, he’s far less likely to find them. Plus he has his own little old lady ghost, Mrs. Sheridan, who screens access to Ellery. Still, he tries to help the ones he sees. Usually what they want is to send a last message to a loved one, often giving important information that was never passed on in life.

On his way to the diner, Ellery is almost run over by a handsome maniac in a pick-up truck, whose passenger is a pretty little child—who happens to be dead. When he runs into the pair at the diner, the little girl beseeches Ellery to please help her father. Normally, these are the types of situations Ellery works hard to avoid. But something about this one makes him reconsider. He just might be sorry he did.

The story is told in Ellery’s POV, in his voice, and I came to really get to know and like him. There is much more to Ellery than meets the eye, likewise with this story. Just when  you think you’ve figured it out, another layer is revealed.

This is not your typical boy meets boy and falls in love tale. No, this is more like boy meets potentially homicidal maniac and fears for his life—so why is he so strongly attracted to him?

Besides Ellery and Boone, there is a supporting cast of supernatural characters you will come to love. I didn’t feel, by the end of the book, that I knew Boone as well as I wanted to, but I feel like I know Ellery. He’s funny and bright, at times self-deprecating, and he has a huge heart.

This multi-layered story was over too soon for my taste. I can only hope and pray there is a sequel in the works. This is my second read by this author, and certainly not my last. Well done, Ms. Emrys, well done!

A Darker Rain Review

A Darker Rain

Author: Claudine Kapel
Publisher: BookBaby
American release date: November 17, 2013
Format/Genre/Length: E-book/Sci-Fi Thriller/378 pages
Overall Personal Rating: ★★★★★

(4.5 stars rounded up)

A black leopard with strange red eyes is wreaking havoc among ranchers in the Seattle area—although this is not a known habitat for leopards. Sigma, a firm that specializes in handling security threats, is called in to investigate. At one time a member of the Air Force, Ryan Cole is aware of a great deal of information the general public isn’t privy to—such as the existence of extraterrestrial life. Also, the fact that alien technology is finding its way to Earth, in the form of weapons.

Ryan and his team are also involved in acquiring some unusual artifacts, five guardian stones which hold great power, and when assembled hold great potential. But for good or harm? Ryan’s boss, Theo Warren, is determined not to let the stones fall into the hands of such criminal types as Drake and Barclay. Sigma possesses one of the stones, and the amulet they came from. It seems that the hunt for these stones may intersect with the hunt for the leopard.

Ryan’s long-time friend Mark Dalton, with whom he served in the Air Force, is head of Sigma’s security. He is distrustful of one of the team members—Caitlin. He senses she isn’t all she appears to be. Also, there is their ex-commanding office, Beecham, who is a sometime customer of Sigma and has no problem with collateral damage. They don’t want him to learn what Sigma is doing, afraid he will take control of the potential weapon in the name of the government.

This was an interesting read from beginning to end, fast-paced and intriguing. I came to like the characters, and was glad to learn there will be more books. The writing is good, but don’t look for indepth descriptions, they’re not there. Even action scenes aren’t as detailed as other books. But it works.

I liked the idea of aliens selling weapons to people on earth. If alien life exists, I can see that happening. The guardian stones reminded me of the stones from the Fifth Element, which is certainly not a bad thing.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sci-fi thrillers. Not a boring moment, it’s a very entertaining read.

Guest Blogger: Taylin Clavelli

Please welcome my friend and fellow author Taylin Clavelli, here to talk about her new release,
Dakota Skies! Taylin, make yourself at home, I'll rustle us up something to drink. You go ahead and start with the questions!

The Questions
1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?

My husband and an axe. The reason being, my husband has enough brains and the skill to make something out of nothing, keep his cool, and get us off the island. An axe because it can be used to cut and dig with or if necessary, make someone into fish bait if they become iritating.

   2)    Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you?

I wouldn’t say one musical gets anywhere close. It’s more a case of Calamity Jane meets Hairspray.  I’m a bit of a tomboy, but I have been known to rebel against what is expected of me. I have also been known to scrub up and wear a dress occasionally too.

3)      Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scene using them:  turf, guarantee, reject.

Danny had no intention of being a reject jockey. That being said, his diminutive size was no guarantee of his success in the trials. One had to have the ability to get the best out of a horse while being the least burden.  This race was his test. The chestnut mare pawed the turf, anxious to get going. As the white flag went up all the inside the stalls went into heightened alert, then, the gates opened… and they were off….

4)      You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why?
Thranduil from The Hobbit. Damn, the man is gorgeous and tall. The years of experience the
king must have would, I hope, make him awesome in bed. I’ve also seen how the actor who plays Thranduil has kissed his co-stars in other movies and I sooooo want to be on the other end of that. Not that it matters when you’re horizontal, but, I am 5’9 and I hated it when a boyfriend was smaller than me.

JLH: omg, I love Lee Pace too! He's awesome in Halt and Catch Fire!

5)      What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other?

We have a takeaway and curl up on the sofa with a movie.

6)      When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot?
If I had to say one or the other it would be plot. However, the more I think about it, it is neither. To begin with, I have an image in my head; for example - a washed up body, a church, or a gnarled tree.  The image can come about by something I’ve seen, a dream I’ve had or a song I’ve heard.  That image then develops into a scene showing why or how that image appeared, and the plot begins. Once I start writing, the character develops. The personality of the character comes first before the physical attributes.

7)      If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you?

Glenn Close. I think she is sufficiently wacky. She is a handsome woman, but not a classic beauty. I scrub up okay, but I ain’t no Miss World by any stretch of the imagination. I wish I had her figure though. I used to be thin once, and I can dream in a movie. If not her, then it would be Julie Walters. There hasn’t been a movie the lady made that I haven’t liked, and I love the depth, humor, and fire she brings to her characters. I loved the moment in Harry Potter where she said “That’s my daughter, you bitch.”

     8)    Who’s your favorite horror villain and why?

I try not to watch horror - it gives me nightmares, so I can’t say I have a favorite. As a child I used to
check under my bed before getting into it anyway or jump onto it from a few feet away. But, the one actor who springs to mind whenever the word horror is mentioned has to be Peter Cushing. I know it gives my age away, but to me no one, modern actor or old Hollywood has ever surpassed him in that genre.

JLH: Another favorite of mine! You have great taste, woman!  :)

9)      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it?

Robin Hood. I love history and I’ve seen many people play the man from Douglas Fairbanks to Russell Crowe. I’ve even been to Nottingham Forest for the official tour.

10)   Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it?

If there was it would be dangerous to tell you at the moment.

Blurb:

Born in the wrong time...

In 1875 Dakota, Sheriff Jamie Carter has to hide his interest in men, even from his gutsy twin sister, Anna. On a good day, the truth can mean a bullet between the eyes, and on a bad, one in the back.

A man on a mission...

Jamie leaves Anna in charge of Blackrock and he hits the bounty hunting trail, along with his faithful equine companion, Houston. Five territories, scores of ‘Wanted’ posters, and many bullets later, his path unexpectedly converges with that of enigmatic loner, Kit Brooks.

Two men with one soul...

Will the smoldering fire between them rage into an inferno and break down protective barriers, allowing them to find love? Or will it separate and kill them?

Beneath Dakota skies...

Jamie and Kit’s story is a sweeping saga of cowboys, Indians, persistent broads, and vengeful villains, where the cowboys aren’t always the good guys, and love can’t be taken for granted.

Excerpt:

“Who’s there?” he barked into the dark.
Jay wasn’t happy at being denied sleep again. There was no answer, and the laughing abruptly stopped. All Jay could hear was the wind rustling the small new leaves on the trees. Eventually sleep took him, albeit restlessly.
Moving out in the morning, he followed the trail north. However, the farther he traveled, the more he couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched.
That evening, Jay set up camp not far from water. It allowed him to replenish his canteen (after boiling it, of course, like his mama taught him) and take a dip. The stream ran deeper, wider, and faster than at other places he’d seen. It was perfect for a bath and rough shave.
Dust, grease, and grime from the last few days scoured his skin. Even though the water was bone chillingly cold, soap and tough scrubbing removed the filth. The freshness it brought made him feel much better. After drying off, Jay returned to camp with a spring in his step.
The closer Jay got to his warming fire… the more he heard voices.
Hiding behind a tall bush, Jay withdrew his gun and… very… slowly… cocked it ready.
Natives were going through his stuff.
His breathing shallow, Jay raised his arm to take aim. At that moment, a weathered hand softly covered his mouth. Jay froze. The man’s other hand carefully and silently lowered his gun. None of the movements were threatening. Though Jay’s heart was pumping so hard he thought it wanted out of his chest.
“Don’t,” was whispered into his ear. “They’re curious. They’ll go soon.”
Jay nodded in compliance, but the stranger’s hold on him didn’t falter. The arm that lowered his gun was around his waist, along with his gun. The man was ensuring Jay didn’t move. His soft, quiet breathing ghosted over the side of Jay’s face. Warmth from the strong stranger permeated every pore of Jay Carter’s cold body like a sleep-inducing fog.
Within minutes the natives left, leaving almost no evidence of their visit, except for a missing sack of grain.
The man continued to whisper, “They’ve been following you since you entered their land. They’re Wichita, and they mean you no harm. If you shoot your gun, it’ll alert every tribesman to your existence. Be careful. Be quiet. Don’t do anything stupid… like sing.”
The sweet scent of honey wafted into Jay’s nose. His body was invaded—not physically, but sensually. Jay had to close his eyes to steady himself.
As if by magic, the stranger’s hold on Jay was gone, leaving cold air in its wake. Instead of being relieved, Jay missed the heat from the man’s broad chest against his back, and the strong arms wrapped around him. It was comfortable, safe… and unnerving.

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY
TAYLIN CLAVELLI
I live in the United Kingdom, south of Birmingham. I am married with children and love my family with all my heart.
My love of books has been a long standing affair, liking nothing better than to lose myself in an imaginary world.
Until I met Lily Velden, I never considered trying my hand at writing. However, after talking ideas, Lily encouraged me to put pen to paper—or rather, fingers to keyboard. Since, with a few virtual kicks in the right place, I haven’t stopped. My increased confidence eventually led to me writing an original work for submission.
My first published work was Boys, Toys and Carpet Fitters, developed for Dreamspinners Press Anthology – Don’t Try This At Home. Since then I have had 3 other stories published by Wayward Ink Publishing – DIY Delights, Invisible, and Sleepwalking. More are on their way.
Now I absolutely adore immersing myself into the characters I create, and transferring the pictures in my brain to paper, finding it liberating, therapeutic, and wonderful.
Outside of writing, my interests include; martial arts, horse-riding, and movies, all of which facilitate my love of a variety of genre movies. My action heroes include; Jet Li and Tony Jaa— the dedication these men have for their art combined with their skill is both amazing and a privilege to watch. I also believe the screen entrance of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean – Curse of the Black Pearl, and Shadowfax in LOTR, to be the greatest screen entrances ever. My all-time favorite movies are Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.
The simple things in life that make my day, putting a smile on my face are:-
Laughter - especially that of my children.
The smell of lasagna cooking – it makes my mouth salivate.
The dawn chorus – no symphony ever written can beat the waking greetings of the birds.

Tease Me Thursday #27: Forbidden

Happy Thursday, and welcome to Tease Me Thursday! It's almost Friday, you can feel it, right? So let's have some fun before the weekend arrives with a little bit of teasing!

Today, I'm going to tease you with a little bit of an old WIP of mine called Forbidden. At one time, it was running once a month, as a series. Now it waits for my return.

Forbidden takes place in the future, to a time when the birth rate is alarmingly low, and infant mortality too high, and children are too precious to risk. The church has finally relented their stance against priests marrying and having families, although homosexuality is still a crime. The United States is now the Alliance of States, and includes Canada. The country is working to rebuild itself, after a devastating war, and prisons are scary places to be. Jerico James is the spoiled son of a wealthy man who's pushed his luck and must be punished. He'd being sent to Sanctum, one of the government help centers, located in the Midwest.  In this snippet, he's arrived at a bus station, waiting for his ride to Sanctum. Enjoy!

The bus ride had been long, boring, and utterly without merit. Part of the reason for the longevity of the ride was the condition of the roads. Some arterial highways were little traveled and had yet to be repaired; sometimes detours were tricky and time consuming. Although Jerico had spent a little time with the two young admiring females who sat across from him, their company had quickly grown tepid, and he had retired to the solitude of his own thoughts, instead. The future seemed bleak and dismal, at least from his perspective, filled with toil, labor and hard work.  That was no way for a man to live.

The town where he’d been finally dropped off, along with his luggage, was nothing in comparison to the one he’d left the day before, but it wasn’t like he’d a say-so in the matter, and he knew Sanctum would be even smaller than this. To his surprise, there was no one there waiting to meet him. He was given instructions by the officer who met the bus: where to sit, and what would happen if he didn’t do so. He shrugged and did as he was told, taking a seat on a bench in the bus terminal. The man had let him know in no uncertain terms that he was being watched, what else could he do?

This terminal was not as busy as the other. It wasn’t like he could slip into the crowd and make good his escape; he’d be too obvious. So he tapped his foot and waited. Suddenly, his attention was drawn by the tittering and giggling of a group of passing young ladies, by their sighs of deep admiration and adulation—sounds which were not aimed at him. He turned his head and saw the most gorgeous man he’d ever seen in his life, coming toward him.

He could see why the sighs for this beauty— he was ready to release one himself over this veritable god. To his surprise, the man stopped in front of him, looking directly at him.

“Jerico James?” he asked, “I’m here to take you to Sanctum.”

Jerico smiled. Maybe this was his lucky day after all.  Maybe Sanctum would be more interesting than he’d imagined it would.

One could hope.
