UNLIKELY ANGEL
by Genie Gabriel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A child psychiatrist running from violence and a former bodyguard grieving the wife he couldn't save form an unlikely alliance to rescue her kidnapped children. In a crumbling mine tunnel on Christmas Eve, their lives depend on a mutt rescued from the streets, a determined mother, and an Unlikely Angel.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Two weeks before Christmas, Mitch decided he had waited long enough.

“Come on, mutt.” Mitch grabbed his coat and a pair of work gloves. “Let’s go find the twins.”

Gabe bounded to his feet and bumped the doorknob with his nose. He sniffed and marked around the yard while Mitch pulled the Ferrari out of the garage. As soon as the dog jumped into the car, Mitch drove to a lot selling Christmas trees. He selected one that would fit nicely in Julia’s small apartment and strapped it to the top of the car.

The mutt hung his head out the window, riding in silent watchfulness until the apartment building was in sight. “Woof!”

“You have to be quiet or we’ll get caught smuggling you in.” Under cover of the falling twilight and a bushy evergreen tree, Mitch and the dog walked quickly toward Julia’s apartment.

As soon as Julia opened the door, the dog pushed inside and sniffed out the twins, quickly falling back into their game of hide and seek. Within seconds, the twins’ giggles let Julia know the dog had found the children.

“I brought a tree.” Mitch stood the evergreen upright.

“I see that.” Julia bit her lip as she walked around the tree. “Nice choice. Bushy all around.”

“I had three picky sisters who trained me in the fine art of Christmas tree selection.”

Julia smiled. “They trained you well.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

I'm an optimist whose rose-colored glasses have bent frames and cracked lenses. When life kicks me in the teeth, I find miracles and lessons I refused to learn an easier way. In fact, I live with a small herd of miracles in the furry forms of dogs, who are constantly trying to teach me to forgive, to play more, and to love without limits. I write about people who find courage and integrity in the darkest times of their lives, who rescue stray dogs and kittens, who find a person they would willingly give their lives for, and who make their little corners of the world a better place. People have remarked my stories "aren't what they expected." With rose-colored glasses firmly in place, I take that as a compliment. I invite you to share a piece of my world in the pages of a book, and hope you find some surprises, some tears, some laughter, and always a happy ending.

Wednesday Briefs: Trapped in Time II: Chapter Eight

Happy Wednesday! It's hard to believe that it's only two weeks until Christmas! Has everyone finished their shopping? I think I have, just need to finish wrapping and send some packages after the last gifts arrive.That's the fun part for me, is giving gifts, and hoping I chose the right ones!

We hope you're enjoying the Wednesday Briefs as much as we enjoy bringing them to  you! It's definitely a labor of love for us!

Last week, as you'll recall, Doll and the others were claimed by Shaughnessey as being members of his troupe. Is he trying to fool the sheriff, and does he have an agenda of his own? And will Doll agree to the charade? Find out in this week's chapter of Trapped in Time II. Then be sure to check out the rest of the Briefers, whose links follow  my tale. Enjoy!

Trapped in Time II: Chapter Eight

The sheriff seems less than impressed with this information. Almost as much as I am. “Is that so?” he grunts noncommittally. “And where are you all staying, if I might ask?”

“At the hotel.” Shaughnessey never skips a beat, standing his ground against the lawman. I suppose he is used to dealing with all manner of people wherever he goes. Still, he had no right to say what is not so. Before I can protest, or correct the sheriff’s mistaken impression, the sheriff spits a stream of something brown and smelly into the street, luckily missing our feet.

“How long you intend to stay?” is his next question.

Shaughessey grins. “Until the good people of Whistling Wind get tired of us. We’ll be performing at the hotel. You‘re invited to come see us. On the house, of course.”

“Of course. Might just do that. In the meantime—” He waves broadly, indicating all of us. “I’ll hold you responsible for your group, Mr. —are you Shaughnessey or Company?”

Shaughnessey obliges with a chuckle, although I see no humor in the situation or the words. “Flynn Shaughnessey. And yes, I shall be responsible for my troupe, naturally.”

“See that you are,” the sheriff grunts, and before I can get one word in to tell him that this mad Irishman is certainly not our keeper, he has walked off, leaving me with my mouth open. I close it abruptly, feeling foolish.

“Well, that’s settled!” Shaughnessey exclaims.

It is on the tip of my tongue to retort that nothing is settled, far from it, and that we do not need or wish his assistance, when my father motions to me to dismount, I manage to do so without losing any dignity.  He nods to Charlie, who quickly takes the reins, as my father slides his arm through mine and draws me apart from the others.

“Adal, I understand that this is not what you might wish, but perhaps it is for the best.”

“How so?” I am perplexed by his words.

“It appears that strangers stand out in this place, so while we are here, better that we seem to fit in with this acting troupe, rather than draw attention to ourselves. Then we can find Vittorio and leave more quickly, ja?”
I suppose his words make sense. He pats my cheek softly. “Plus, we shall have somewhere to sleep that isn’t on the ground. I think it would be nice to sleep in a bed, don’t you?”

I feel selfish for not having considered my father’s comfort—and that of the others—sooner. It must have been hard on him all this time, first sleeping in a crude hut in a prehistoric jungle, and then on the hard ground here as we travel west. He is not quite as young as the rest of us, after all, and I should look out for him more. It is no excuse that my mind and heart are somewhere else.

“Ja, a bed will be good,” I agree, although I can’t help but think it will be better with Vittorio in it. Then a sudden thought strikes me. “But he was lying. We are not part of the troupe, so how can we stay at the hotel?”

Vati wrinkles his brow, but before we can consider the matter further, Shaughnessey intrudes upon our privacy, as if this were his cue to enter. “Pardon my interruption,” he says smoothly, “but you shall be part of my troupe.”

My face must show my displeasure at his statement, for he hastens to add, “Only for as long as you wish. And you need not go on stage, if you don’t want to, although I think that’d help us out. We could use a couple more people, and I think Doll would look good in a dress—”

I cannot have heard that annoying man correctly, surely. A dress? Me? I begin to mutter curse words in my native tongue, knowing very well he cannot understand me.

“We can discuss everything later, once we get settled,” Vati says diplomatically.

“I meant no harm, Doll,” Shaughnessey apologizes to me. “Or disrespect. If you’ve noticed, we’re an all male company, so that means we have to play both male and female parts. We’re used to it, I didn’t think before I spoke. C’mon, let’s get everyone settled in the hotel. Just follow me.” He turns his horse’s head and off he goes once more to the head of the wagons, while I find myself surrounded by Charlie, Myron, and Mary now, as well as my father.

“Did I hear him correctly? We’re going to act?” Myron’s eyes seem to be shining, as if he is excited at the idea. Perhaps he has an actual interest in being a thespian. As for myself, the idea has never occurred to me. Charlie smiles, but probably because Myron is happy, and Mary bounces up and done, softly chittering.
“Ja. Well, maybe,” my father concedes. I can see he is trying not to crush Myron’s hopes, so I reluctantly table my animosity and try to show some enthusiasm, although I am far from feeling excited at the prospect of wearing a dress. That will take a lot of convincing. Hopefully we’ll find Vittorio and be gone before the question arises once more.

In the meantime, we could use a place to sleep, I concede, so I give in at least that much. “To the hotel.”

Charlie leads Frederick, with Mary in the saddle, and Myron at his side, while Vati and I walk along behind them, following the wagon trains until we spy our destination. It is not hard to find as the faded wooden sign above the door simply reads Hotel. It is probably the only hotel in town, I surmise.

Shaugnessey dismounts and ties up his horse, and then Frederick, before he turns to us with a big smile.
“Home sweet home!” And then he winks at me.

Insolent wretch.

EXCERPT:

From Holiday Heat by Noelle Adams

“Why is it so hot in December?” she wailed, forcing herself past a faintly tender pull at the sight of his sated eyes and relaxed body.

“Heat wave. Some sort of tropical front. It’s moving up the east coast, from—”

“Oh, shut up.”

Matt’s lips quirked at her grumpy tone, but he didn’t continue his discourse on the unseasonable December weather.

She shouldn’t enjoy his company so much. She shouldn’t like him. She certainly shouldn’t trust him with her body—or anything else.

There was no future with him. He’d told her the first night they met that a real relationship was impossible for him, and nothing about that had changed.

Being with him wasn’t anything like being with Henry. It didn’t feel safe and familiar, even after three months. She had no delusions about a future with Matt. She never would have had sex with him at all if there had been any possibility of a future.

“Next time, I’ll pick the hotel,” he said, his eyes resting on her with a gaze that was almost soft.

“No, I told you before. When you’re involved in a sleazy affair, then you pick a motel that’s appropriate for the occasion.”

He cocked an eyebrow, obviously amused. “Is that what we’re doing? Having a sleazy affair?”

“Of course.”

“Neither one of us is married. I’m not sure ‘affair’ is the correct term.”

“Of course it is. You don’t have to be married to have an affair. It just needs to be secret.” No one knew that Carrie was regularly screwing Matthew Lynch, and she intended to keep it that way.

“I see.” He looked eminently unconvinced. And still amused. And definitely superior.

“Don’t be an ass.” When he opened his mouth to respond, she spoke over him. “You know exactly what ass-like behavior I’m referring to.”

Since that first night, they’d gotten together at least once a week for sex, although recently they’d been getting together more often.

Matt was her hot secret. Her shameless indulgence. Everyone thought she was quiet and withdrawn—keeping to herself, working in her coffee shop, never taking risks. No one would dream she’d have a casual affair with a gorgeous, notorious, wounded artist.

Virtual Book Tour: Blood and Gold

Please welcome back author Hawk MacKinney who is here to talk about his latest book, Blood and Gold. Hawk will be awarding a $20 Amazon GC to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour. The more you comment, the better your chances of winning. To see the other stops on the tour, go here.

Blood and Gold, Book 3 in the Craige Ingram Mystery Series
by Hawk MacKinney

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Blood and Gold, the third book in The Craige Ingram Mystery Series, once again tests the instincts and skills of retired Navy SEAL/part-time private investigator Craige Ingram. Lust, greed, body parts and unrestrained wild sex parties are what await Craige Ingram when he leaves the comforts of his South Carolina home to visit his former SEAL buddy, Detective Spinner Krespinak. Set in the Colorado underbelly of a sordid sable and faux glitz ski mecca, Detective Spinner Krespinak suspects drugs have made their way to the snowy playground that is Aspen. An Olympic ski hopeful is brutally murdered, Spinner vanishes, and Craige Ingram is shot as events spin out of control with a Catch-22 no one anticipates.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Spinner's high mountain, ski slope bronzed hand ruffled through his hair.  He flipped another page, “That's the third one, counting the other mismatched body parts as one and two.”  Frowned.  “There's not much more here than with the others.”  Handed Craige Loopy's prelims. “Take a look at those…lemme know what you think.”  Krespinak brown eyes bayoneted the blue stick-‘em pasted to the center of his monitor, “…mm…interesting phone memo.  Seems Hizzoner the Mayor is concerned.  Wants to keep the lid on.  Claims he doesn't want to scare away business.  Real fact behind his fume-an’-fuss is all about not wanting to scare away votes in the upcoming elections.  Media’s already nosing around about this morning’s torch job—that ought to rattle his cage.  Stroking a yancy politician doesn't gripe me, but if he was serious we could use some additional personnel pavement pounding for answers.”

Ferron said, “Loopy said she hadn’t gotten the final results on the mitochondrial DNA runs.  But from what she’s seen so far, she said it doesn’t look like this latest one even comes close to a match with any of the previous body parts.  Time of death is iffy as well.  If the body was left outside in the subfreezing temps, Loopy said it could stretch the time interval.  Her best guess is within a week or two of the others.  Only difference this time, we have a whole body.”

Craige asked Ferron, “When did the first one show up?”

Ferron thought for a moment, asked Spinner, “When did we get the first one?  A little over two months ago?”

“Something like that…date’s logged in the case file,” Spinner said.  “What bothers me most is not what we have, but what we don’t have.  Along with no IDs and no statewide missing person reports, there’s not even a close to a match to any of the age ranges Loopy suggested.”

“You think the killings are random?”  Craige said.

“No—I don't think they're random.  But I'm one of the few who feels that way.”  Spinner thought of the grisly pieces in the morgue cooler.  He didn't like prowling for motives.  Liked it less their coming up empty with damn few answers.  Sure didn't like the doubts gnawing his innards.  “I'm stuck at which came first—chicken or the egg quandary.  Which victims were intentional targets?  Which ones might’ve just been in the way; killed to make sure there were no awkward inconvenient witnesses.  If they are serial killings, we’re not seeing any time-pattern between kills.  There has to be a reason for the times between each victim, and why are we finding only pieces?”
.

My Sexy Saturday #12: A Special Christmas

Happy Saturday everyone! I'm back with some more Sexy Saturday goodness! This week my seven sentences comes from my latest release, A Special Christmas, which was just released by Torquere Press. Set during the Prohibition era, it's the story of two young men, one Italian,  one Greek, who meet in a speakeasy in Romeoville and let nature take its course. To find the rest of this blog hop, go here.

Enjoy!

Nick didn't know just how it came about, but he felt his hand nestled inside of Florian's, both hands resting lightly on the table between them. Florian didn't seem to think anything wrong with that; how could Nick snatch his hand back? He couldn't. And he didn't really want to. No one was taking notice of them. It was dark. They were among strangers. All sorts of excuses flowed through his head.

Guest Blogger Penny Estelle

Please welcome fellow Muse author Penny Estelle, who is here to discuss her new Christmas story. Make
yourself comfortable, Penny, I'll find us something to snack on, something appropriate to the story!

I can’t tell you how excited I am that my very first ever Christmas story is being released today.  The Unwanted Christmas Guest is a story about Elizabeth McMurphy, an up-and-coming high-powered attorney, who is after vengeance.  Her sights are set on one of the richest and most powerful families in Colorado. Steve York is an obnoxious reporter that thinks the ice queen has gone too far and does all he can to get under her skin.

When one of the worst blizzards in history, hits Colorado and leaves a hurt Steve York, stranded with Elizabeth in a mountain cabin, she must decide to either take care of him, or throw him out to fend for himself.

Excerpt
“What’s going on here? Where the hell are my pants?”
      Elizabeth practically jumped out of her skin. Steve stood in the bedroom doorway, wearing only some tight fitting pink sweats.
“I found you after your car went nose to nose with a tree.” She crossed her arms. “The question is, what were you doing up here in a snowstorm? Were you coming up here to spy on me?”
      “Jesus, my head hurts.” Steve groaned and sat at the kitchen table. “And don’t flatter yourself.” He brought up his hands to rub his eyes and push on his temples. He started to say something when a giggle and a round of indistinguishable sounds caught his attention. Steve stared at the little girl, a whisper of a smile on his pale face. “You have a daughter?”

      She chose to ignore the question. “Again, Mr. York, you were headed…where?”
      “I was going to see some friends in Granby, then on to Steamboat to spend the holidays with my family.”
      “You figured on taking a short cut on Badger Springs Road?”
      “Basically,” he muttered. “I had a phone in my pants pocket…” Steve looked down at the pink sweats. “Yours, I presume?” At her nod, he asked with a smirk, “And you’re the one that took my clothes off?”
      “Junior, my neighbor.”
      “If you’ll allow me to use your phone, I’ll call Triple A and get myself and my car out of your life.” He reached over to Katy and she latched onto his finger, the brightest smile ever illuminating her sweet face.
Elizabeth quickly picked her up, as if he would contaminate her by his touch.  “Phones are out.”
      “Internet?”
      “Nope.”
      “How the hell do you live here?” he asked irritably.

Wednesday Briefs: Trapped in Time II: Chapter Seven

Hard to believe Christmas is just around the corner! Hope everyone who celebrated Thanksgiving had a great one! I know I've been remiss in not posting, but we went out of town on Thursday and just got back Sunday, so I've been catching up on stuff. And reassuring a needy cat that I still love him lol

So now it's time for more flash fiction because it's Wednesday and holy cow the week is already half done! Where is the time going? As you'll recall from last week's chapter of Trapped in Time, Doll is convinced that Vittorio is waiting for him in Whistling Wind and it's only a matter of time until they are reunited. Is he right? Check out this week's episode and find out! Don't forget to see what the other flashers are doing, whose links follow my tale. Enjoy!

Trapped in Time II: Chapter Seven

I cannot sleep for excitement. Anticipation of the joyous reunion which shall occur on the morrow courses through my veins. I tell myself I must sleep, that Vittorio will not be happy with me if I do not and he will scold me for looking like something the cat has dragged in. Even so, I cannot seem to close my eyes. I stare up into the darkness of the night sky, tracing the stars in their familiar patterns even as I draw comfort from them.

How well my father understands me. He joins me without comment or censure and sits with me beside the dying embers of our fire, while all about us slumber, and listens to me talk about Vittorio. I lean comfortably against him, my arm tucked through his, memories flowing from my tongue like vintage wine.

 I must have fallen asleep, for the next thing I know morning has arrived with the first rosy fingers of dawn, and preparations are under way for the continuation of our journey. Once again, I find myself riding Frederick, but I do not mind. I am getting used to the way he rocks back and forth in a soothing motion, and this time I manage to get into the saddle without falling off even once.

Besides, I reason, if I am on horseback, it will be easier for me to look for Vittorio, as I can guide Frederick as I wish, which is not possibleif I am a passenger on one of the wagons. I cannot help but worry that I shall be burdened with the unwelcome company of the gregarious Irishman, but such is not the case. I am pleasantly surprised by his absence and do not make inquiries as to its reason. That would be akin to opening Pandora’s box, and who in their right mind would choose to do that? Other than Pandora, of course.

When will we reach Whistling Wind is the question that pounds inside my head in a constant refrain. It seems to take forever, although I know that is not the case. We follow a small stream through a narrow canyon. I am forced to follow behind the wagons, for there is no room to maneuver around them. It seems an excruciatingly long time before we emerge at last onto a grassy plain. Ahead of us lie mountains, probably the source from which the stream emanates. And nestled at the foot of the mountains is a town.

“Doll, look!” Charlie is sitting on one of the wagon seats, Myron beside him. Charlie has apparently learned to drive a team, and seems to be doing well at it. He waves at me with enthusiasm as I pull on the reins and direct Frederick to walk alongside the wagon. I cannot blame Charlie for being happy, I am beyond happy myself. “Vittorio will be there, and Doll will be happy again!”

Truer words have never been spoken, I think.

I nod my happy agreement, afraid my voice will not bear the weight of my emotions.

“We’ll help you find him.” Myron offers me a confident smile that I return.

Despite our optimism at seeing Whistling Wind just before us, its closeness is deceptive as it is late afternoon before we finally arrive. I follow the wagons as they rumble into the town, which is quite unlike any place I have ever seen before, used as I am to the comforts and modern conveniences of my home. The streets of this place are not paved, they are dirt and dust. What with the preponderance of animals that are being used as transportation, along with pedestrian traffic, there is an unavoidable residue that must be stepped around. We seem to be heading down the main thoroughfare, with an assortment of businesses on either hand, and some homes. People gawk at us, as if unaccustomed to seeing strangers, or at least not so many at one time. Perhaps that means Vittorio will stand out, and therefore be easier to find.

And now that we are here, it is time to take our leave of the actors, thank them for their hospitality, and be on our way. I gather the rest of our group from the wagons they have been riding in. Mary leaps excitedly into my arms, drawing a few stares. Luckily, Frederick is too used to her ways to be startled by her actions.
The question now is where to look first. But before I can formulate any sort of plan in my mind, a tall man in a long brown duster, a drooping moustache, and the gleam of an official in his eye strides toward us with purpose.

He addresses Vati first, probably assuming from his age that he is our leader, which is a proper assumption to make. “Afternoon.” He nods respectfully to my father.

“Good afternoon,” Vati replies. “You have come to welcome us?”

“You might say that, yes.” The man pulls back his coat far enough to reveal a star upon his chest, of the tin variety. “I’m the law here. Sheriff Armstrong. Might I ask what business you folk have here?”

I am a little surprised at the question. Is this not America, land of freedom and home of brave men? My father looks as perplexed as I feel, but he remains calm. I take a step toward Vati, and Myron and Charlie follow suit.

“The reason I ask is that we’ve had some trouble here lately and it’s my job to know who’s here.”

“What kind of trouble?” Vati asks.

“Folks being hurt or robbed, or both.”

“That is terrible!” Vati exclaims.

“Yup, which is why I’m asking what your business is.”

But before we can phrase a response, another voice can be heard.

“They’re with me, Sheriff.”

I glance up to find Shaughnessey has arrived among us.

“They’re part of my troupe.” He waves his hand to include us all.  “Shaughnessey and Company, at your service.”

Words fail me.

Until next time, take care!
