GENRE: Romantic Suspense

BLURB:

The world doesn’t know Cat Beckett, CIA linguist and expert sniper. She does her best to keep her skills secret, but when a SEAL team is ambushed in the remote mountains of Afghanistan she doesn’t hesitate to take out the enemy. After saving the SEALs, the third Spec Ops team to be compromised in as many months, she realizes someone in her unit is giving classified information to the enemy. She suspects that Peter Mitchell, her supervisor and ex-lover, is behind the betrayal, and sets out on a dangerous quest to prove his treason.

Lt. Ryan Heller, US Navy SEAL, is accustomed to facing death. When his team is attacked by Taliban fighters he thinks his last day is upon him, until an unknown sniper saves their lives. The prickly, green-eyed beauty handles a rifle as easily as most women handle a purse, but who is she? And what is she doing in the middle of a war zone? He is intrigued, and attracted, but his instincts and her piercing, tiger-like stare tell him to tread carefully.

Afghanistan’s Bagram Valley is not the ideal place to find love, but these two are trained to make the best of bad situations. Geography alone makes starting a relationship challenging enough, but caught between extremists and an unhinged, obsessed Mitchell makes it downright deadly.

Cat lay down on her bed and slowly sipped the wine.  As the candlelight and music washed over her, she felt the last of the adrenaline wear off.  She sighed softly and pictured him: the eyes so blue they were almost violet, the sharp line of his jaw, the lips that made her melt, the tall, athletic body, the smile that was like sunlight to her soul.  Desire swirled in her belly, and now it wasn’t adrenaline making her edgy.  She wanted him so much she ached.

Frustrated, she sat up and put the wine aside.  She looked around the room then turned off the candle closest to her.  Shaking her head she rose, and was about to turn off the second candle when there was a soft rap on her door.  Her head snapped around.

“Just a minute,” she said after a moment of surprised silence.  Cat grabbed her robe, slipped it on, and tied the sash.  Her bare feet whispered over the floor as she approached the panel and said, “Who is it?”

“It’s me, Cate.  Can we talk?”

She was so stunned that for a moment she couldn’t move.

“Cate?”

She blinked, shook herself, and opened the door.  She looked at Ryan with wide eyes and backed up as he walked up the steps and into her quarters.  He closed and locked the door behind him then turned to her.  Looping an arm around her waist he pulled her against him.

“I changed my mind,” he whispered.

Leslie is a war-veteran who served with the U.S. Navy during the Gulf War, and she was among the first groups of women to work the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.  During her five years tour she was stationed at NAS Miramar and spent time on the carriers USS Independence, USS Ranger, USS Lincoln, and the USS Nimitz.  The final two years of her enlistment were spent on Guam and her squadron frequently deployed to Japan and the Middle East.

Girl in the Water

GENRE: Romantic Suspense

BLURB:

After the tragic death of his family, Ian, fresh home from the Army, is a shadow of his former self. Only his best friend's disappearance in South America pulls him back from the ledge. He rushes to Brazil, but he gets there too late. The best he can do now is find his friend's murderers. Ian wants the murderers. Daniela wants Ian to acknowledge the hot sparks of passion between them. He doesn't mind breaking rules, just never his own. Rule #1: You don't seduce the woman you protect

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
A couple of boats had been dragged up on the flat of the riverbank. Nobody around. Ian sat in the shade of the largest boat and pretended to be watching the barges and tugboats going past him.
He stole a glance at the house, hoping to spot Finch. Nothing there, but something rising out of the water maybe thirty feet from him caught his attention.
At first, he thought it might be a caiman—South America’s version of an alligator. Caimans were native to the area, although, he had no idea if they lived in this part of this particular river.
But instead, out of the river, rose a young woman.
She seemed to be struggling with…an anaconda?
When the shiny black, long body wrapped around hers, Ian moved, ready to dive into the water to help her, but she had the upper hand and dragged the wriggling beast toward shore with a triumphant smile, and he could see that she had a giant eel.
He couldn’t take his eyes off the thing. The eel stretched as long as the woman was tall, over five feet. They wrestled in the mud, the scene stunningly primal and elemental.
She had a piece of rag tied around her small breasts, and another around her slim waist, covering only the private parts of her body. She was the most stunning sight he’d ever seen, long dark hair streaming down in wet rivulets. A goddess risen.
A goddess in mortal struggle.
His western sensibilities pushed him to run and help, but the woman and the eel and their battle seemed somehow the spirit of the Amazon itself, and he felt like an interloper. He felt that he couldn’t take the woman’s triumph away from her.
And she did win, dragging the eel to shore, grabbing a rock the next second and smashing the eel’s head. The eel was still squirming when, with the same, sharp-edged rock, she gutted the thing, dumping the insides back into the river. She was not a peaceful goddess.
She washed the eel efficiently, then picked up the carcass and carried it, staggering under the weight, up the tall, steep bank, and in through the back door of the house Ian had been watching.
Ian’s chin might have dropped a little. Or a lot. In fact, he felt as if his chin just hit his lap.
Who on earth was she?
EXCERPT:
A half hour later Maëlle squatted at a swarm of mosquitoes and shifted the fishing pole case from one shoulder to the other.  The bag was light and didn’t smell as bad or feel as slimy as the dead fish Paul and Bruno were carrying. She turned and headed between the trees that laid just behind the cabin.
Maëlle stopped abruptly and Paul almost ran into her.
“What’s wrong Maëlle? Why did you stop?”
Paul’s eyes followed hers and noticed the Mercedes parked in the driveway.
Bruno quickly caught up with them. “Looks like we have company. Were you two expecting company?”
“No,” Paul and Maëlle said together.
“Well, that’s an awfully expensive car. Whoever it is has a few dollars to rub together,” Bruno said.
“Or a great expense account,” Maëlle added.
Bruno took the lead. “Come on, you two, let’s go over and say howdy,” he said, carrying a load of fish. “Maybe the sight of all these dead fish will frighten them away.”
Paul playfully gave Maëlle’s shoulder a nudge as they walked over together.
All at once Bruno yelled.  “Good evening, you in the car. Can I help you?”
The car door opened.
“Hey Bruno?”
“Hamelin?” Bruno laughed out. “Boy, I haven’t seen you in ages.”
Maëlle looked up at Paul. “Who’s Hamelin?”
 “I guess you’re about to meet my dad’s nephew Hamelin Scott,” Paul said bluntly almost sharply.
For a moment Maëlle could have sworn she saw a flash of something pass across Paul’s face.  She didn’t have long to ponder it as Hamelin closed the distance between them.
A Bodyguard of Lies
by Donna Del Oro
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Romantic suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The past and present collide as FBI analyst Jake Bernstein is recruited to go undercover and investigate an elderly American grandmother, currently on a tour of England and Ireland with her granddaughter, who is suspected of WWII war crimes. Jake joins them and runs into complications when his growing attraction to the granddaughter challenges his obligation to remain emotionally detached. As the investigation intensifies, a neo-Nazi group tries to prevent him from learning the truth and achieve justice for all concerned. Danger mounts, and Jake struggles to stay alive long enough to either prove the old woman’s guilt or exonerate her.
Despite Meg Larsen’s mounting passion for the stranger who has joined their tour, she suspects he’s not who he claims to be. When she realizes her grandmother is the target of the man’s investigation, her first instinct is to protect the woman who raised her. Eventually, however, Meg must face the possibility of her grandmother’s lifetime of lies while forced to trust a man who has become both their nemesis and bodyguard.
Note from the Author:
My new FBI series, INTERNATIONAL RELEASE-JUNE 8th, is the Jake Bernstein FBI series--A BODYGUARD OF LIES, Book One. If you love a genre that's chock full of danger, suspense, crime drama and a heavy dose of sizzling romance, you'll LOVE THIS SERIES! FBI agent Jake Bernstein is my epitome of a hardy, justice-seeking federal officer who combines good looks, a sense of humor and unyielding courage. He knows how to investigate as one of the Bureau's best undercover agents, but he also knows how and when to bend the rules for the sake of true human justice.
The idea for this book, A BODYGUARD OF LIES, struck me when I was tipping a pint with fellow tourists at an Irish pub. There on the wall was an old, WW II photo of Irish dockworkers sharing their pub with German U-boat sailors. That started me wondering about the role that Ireland played during the war, its uneasy relationship with Nazi Germany and the German spies who infiltrated Ireland and England. Lots of research followed, which led me to a contemporary story about an FBI undercover agent who investigates an elderly, naturalized American grandmother, wanted by MI6 for war crimes. Little ol' Mary McCoy Snider, a dangerous WW II Nazi spy who caused the deaths of thousands? Even Agent Jake Bernstein finds that an unbelievable stretch. The granddaughter whom Jake finds himself falling in love with also disbelieves MI6's allegations.
Until his investigation draws him into the middle of a dangerous, secret neo-Nazi group that'll stop at nothing to protect one of their own. And then Jake must choose, the old woman and her lovely granddaughter. Or justice!
EXCERPT:
“Since when are you courting me?” She sat back on the bed, leaning back on her hands, her elbows cocked. Still in her underwear, her breasts thrusting half out of her bra.
“Since the first time I saw you.” He smiled with irony, admitting to himself that he was lost from the first moment he set eyes on her.
You lovesick fool.
Your career’s about to crash and burn.
What Meg did next surprised even him. Suddenly, she reached up. Her hands seized his hips and pulled him closer to the bed. With alacrity, Jake began stripping off his clothes. Off flew his windbreaker and sweatshirt, followed by a more gingerly unstrapping of his shoulder holster. He laid them on the floor, then untied the waistband of his sweat pants.
He stopped, his hands frozen at his waist. A quickie in this dump? What a memory to leave her...
“Jake Bernstein, are you courting me? Yes or no?” she repeated, her voice dripping with sass.
“Doing a half-ass job of it, but yeah,” he said, smiling.
“Well, let me be the judge of that.”
Her eyes sparkling with humor, she pulled down his trousers and briefs, exposing his huge erection. She scooted back on the bed and shimmied out of her panties at the same time. She glanced at her watch. “C’mon, cowboy, we have only ten minutes!”
No time for recriminations, he thought.
Screw this dump. Screw this case. Screw my career.
BLURB:
Cold-case detective Parker McCall has spent fifteen years trying to solve his brother’s murder.  Now a chance photo of the killer in the newspaper sets him hard on the woman’s trail.  A former teenaged runaway, reclusive, award-winning photojournalist B.K. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“All right,” she said. “Undo my hands.”
“You promise to answer my questions?”
“I said I would.”
He tossed her backpack onto the pile of papers and pulled out the handcuff key. He reached for her wrists and unlocked the cuffs, trying to ignore the alluring fragrance of her skin and hair. Then he stepped back, his impatience mounting as he waited for her to do her part.
But she took her time, righting the chair, taking off her peacoat and draping it over her bag. At last she turned to face him, and for the first time, he got a close look at her in the light. She was even more attractive than he’d expected with her wary green eyes and delicately winged brows, that long tumble of auburn hair. Her mouth was evocative and full, her high, sculpted cheekbones tinged with pink. A smattering of freckles dusted her small nose.
He raked his gaze down the rest of her—over her small, high breasts and slender waist, slim hips clad in low-slung jeans—and his heart began to thud. She looked amazingly like the computerized image, but softer, far sexier. More vulnerable.
Vulnerable? He stifled a snort. He wouldn’t make that mistake again.
He returned his gaze to hers. And without warning, a sense of awareness arrowed between them, a deep tug of sexual attraction that caught him unprepared. His belly went taut, a rush of adrenaline accelerating his pulse.
He bit back hard on a curse. Wrong time. Wrong place. Definitely the wrong woman, considering she was a potential suspect in his brother’s death. And her reaction didn’t help—her eyes going wide and dark, her breath catching on a quiet gasp, impacting him even more.
“I need a drink,” she muttered, spinning around.
That made two of them.
Guest Blogger Kelly Whitley
Please welcome one of my Muse authors as well as my friend, Kelly Whitley! She's visiting here today to do two things - bravely answer my infamous Rick Reed questions, and talk about her fabulous vampire novel, Into the Red. Before we start, I'd just like to say that her book creates a very unique world of vampires, with an interesting take on them. Not to mention that she has one damn hot vampire as her hero too!  Okay, Kelly, I'll grab us some drinks, why don't you start with the questions?
Oh, I almost forgot. At the end of the post, you'll find a way to win a copy of Into The Red!
The Questions for Julie Lynn Hayes
1)      You’re marooned on a small island with one person and one item of your choice—who is that person and what item do you have?
Hmm…The item is a Kindle with wireless, because I have to have my books, and I could write on it if I wanted to.
The person is harder. I’d want someone who could provide sparkling conversation, excellent cooking, and “enjoyable” nights. Can’t say there’s a real person out there to fill the bill I have in mind.
2)      Which musical would you say best exemplifies your life – and which character in that musical are you? Lordy. My Fair Lady. I’d be Eliza Doolittle. : >D
3)      Take these three words and give me a 100 word or less scenario using them:  copper, grammatical, print In the warehouse, the wet penny odor of blood mixed with the oily haze of diesel fumes and burnt metal. Cold, isolated, dark. No one had heard a thing. The copper pipe lay in the grit on the floor, three feet from a pair of broken glasses and the body of a hefty gentleman who no longer had the face to set them on. A note sat on his chest, plain copy paper with “YOLO, sucker” in crude print. Yeah, this killer wasn’t exactly a grammatical fanatic.
4)      You’ve just been let loose in the world of fiction, with permission to do anyone you want. Who do you fuck first and why? Yeow. No idea.
   5)    What is your idea of how to spend romantic time with your significant other? Talking over coffee, clothing optional.
   6)    When you start a new story, do you begin with a character, or a plot? A plot idea—one sentence. But I can’t start until I get the main hero nailed down.
7)    If they were to make the story of your life into a movie, who should play you? Mmm…now that’s a bit of a dilemma. I’d like to say Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn, which’d make it a posthumous performance for either of them.
    8)    Who’s your favorite horror villain and why? Dracula. Because he’s the guy who triggered my interest in vampires so many years ago—the old black and white films. Bela Lugosi.
9)      Do you have an historical crush and if so, who is it? I’d have to say Wyatt Earp. Nothing like an old time law man.
10)   Is there a story that you’d like to tell but you think the world isn’t ready to receive it? Sure. But maybe the world will change before I’m too decrepit to pound computer keys.
Now, tell us a little about Into the Red, will you please, Kelly?
Excerpt:
The caged light above the emergency exit cast a pallid purple glow over the alley and the pair coupling against the brick wall. Barely twenty feet away he watched, hunkered down in the murk of the shadows, thinking about the merits of killing them both, or waiting for the girl to be alone.
The bar catered to the darker element; men who came to drink, drug, and fornicate. Dangerous men. Men who committed violent crimes as easily as they breathed. Few women frequented this establishment. Most of the females present worked there as waitresses with benefits for purchase, for the men with sex on their minds.
Management took a cut of everything—the liquor, the drugs, and the sex. He also knew the management dictated who did what to whom and when, so it had been just a matter of time before a pair left the bar for the privacy of the alley.
The guy from inside the bar was clean, well-dressed in something other than biker gear and blue jeans, and wasn’t drunk or high.
Which was better than usual.
Hidden, he watched while the man finished and then disappeared back inside. The girl stayed in the alley. A match flared as she lit a cigarette and walked in tight circles by the back door. Based on his observations, he knew she wanted to attract a customer who didn’t come from the bar.
A quickie.
She didn’t realize she’d just sealed her own fate. It would be a quickie. A hell of a quickie.
He separated from the shadows and approached her from the end of the alley. He wasn’t clean, well dressed, or sober.
Which was worse than usual.
But he did have fifty bucks. He bit back a laugh as he caught the expression on her face—half victory, half revulsion. She took his money, tucking it into her bra before turning to face the rough brick of the building.
He leaned into her, pressing her chest against the alley wall and inhaling the smell of her neck as he yanked up her skirt and entered her from behind. He ran his hands over her body, relishing the feel of her soft skin as he plunged into her, ignoring her little yips of pain.
As he slammed into her and finished, the leech of his addiction demanded satisfaction, and he snaked an arm around her throat. For a moment she didn’t react, then the fragrance of her relief gave way to the smoky scent of panic. She lashed out, connecting with the unforgiving brick wall. Her struggles kicked his anticipation into overdrive, and he sank his teeth into the exploding pulse of her fear.
Within a few seconds, her legs gave out, leaving her limp against the wall; he supported her around the waist. Anyone encountering the scene would assume they’d not yet concluded their transaction. The ache of withdrawal eased its way into euphoria as the Red hit his bloodstream.
With jerky movements, he laid the body out of sight behind the filthy packing boxes before grafting himself to the shadows.
Soon, another couple would exit the bar for an outdoor tryst.
And he’d be watching.
